Chip is sad and lonely. He would like some friends. Will you help me make friends for Chip?

Page 4: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

Thank you so much for helping me. First, we have to preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Page 5: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

We need 2 and 3/4 cups of flour. I have a problem we only have a 1 cup, a 1/2 cup, a 1/3 cup and a 1/4 cup to choose from. We don’t have a 2 cup or a 3/4 cup. Which two cups should I use to help me measure the flour?

Page 6: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

Wow, you did great picking the cups. We will use the 1 cup and the 1/4 cup. I chose these two cups because two 1 cups equals 2 cups and three 1/4 cups equals 3/4 cups. (c stands for cup)

1 cup + 1 cup =2 cups

+ + =

1/4 c 1/4 c 1/4 c 3/4 c

Now we pour the two 1 cups of flour and three 1/4 cups of flour in the bowl.

We need to pick out which item we should use to measure the salt, baking soda, and vanilla. Can you pick the item that would measure in the unit teaspoons?

Page 9: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

The white item is what you can use to measure teaspoons. Let’s pour in the baking soda. We need 1 teaspoon of baking soda.

Page 10: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

Now let’s pour in the salt. We need 1 teaspoon of salt.

Page 11: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

Oh no, we have a problem. We should have mixed the dry ingredients in a small bowl so that we could mix the rest of the ingredients in this big bowl. What should we do?

Page 12: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

I think we should pour the flour, baking powder, and salt to a smaller bowl. Let’s pour in the ingredients now.

Page 13: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

We need to mix the butter, white sugar, brown sugar, vanilla, and eggs together. We need two sticks of butter? This is the number of sticks of butter that came in the package. How many sticks of butter come in the package?

Page 14: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

Right, there are four sticks of butter. How many sticks of butter do we take away if we only need 2 sticks of butter for the mix? Great, we take away 2 sticks which will leave us 2 sticks of butter to put in the mix.

Page 15: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

We need 3/4 cups of white sugar to make the cookie dough. How many 1/4 cups do we need to make 3/4 cup? We need three 1/4 cups because 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 3/4.

Page 16: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

Let’s pour the white sugar in the bowl.

Page 17: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

We need to add 3/4 cups of brown sugar. We need to pour three 1/4 cups of brown sugar to make 3/4 cup.

Page 18: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

This is a dozen eggs. How many eggs are in a dozen? Count them. There are 12 eggs in a dozen.

Page 19: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

We need 2 eggs out of the dozen eggs to put in the cookie dough mix. How many eggs will be left in the carton? There will be 10 eggs left in the carton. Let’s crack the eggs and put them in the mix.

Page 20: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

We need 1 teaspoon of vanilla. We can use the same teaspoon that we used to pour in the salt and the baking soda.

Page 21: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

This is what the mix looks like with the eggs, butter, sugar, and brown sugar.

Page 22: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

We can use a hand mixer to mix all the ingredients together.

Page 23: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

Do you remember the flour mix we made? Now we must use the hand mixer to blend in the flour mix a little at a time until we have completely mixed it with all the other ingredients.

Page 24: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

Guess what we need to do next? Mix in the chocolate chips. Which utensil do we use to mix in the chocolate chips the knife, spoon, or fork? We should use the spoon.

Page 25: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

We need 2 cups of chocolate chips to make Chip’s friends extra chocolaty.

Page 26: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

Pour in the chocolate chips into the dough.

Page 27: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

Mix in the chocolate chips with the spoon.

Page 28: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

Use a spoon to put the dough on the pan.

Page 29: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

The oven should be warm and toasty ready to bake the cookie dough into delicious chocolate chip cookies. Let’s put the pan in the oven and shut the door.

Page 30: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

Now it’s time to set the timer for 11 minutes. The timer now reads 9 minutes and we need to bake the cookies for 11 minutes. How many more minutes do we add? We add 2 more minutes to make 11 minutes for the cookies to bake completely.

Page 31: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

It looks like Chip’s new friends are ready. Lets take them out of the oven. Do you think Chip will like his new friends?

Page 32: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

He does like them and is happy as you can see. Now Chip has friends and he’s not lonely. Can you count how many friends Chip has?

Page 33: Friends for Chip By: Carla Vela. This is Chip, Hershey C. Chip

Chip has 8 new friends and thanks to you for helping me to the very end.
