A confused sound of voices was coming from a room that overlooked the terrace. I went in. The room was full of people. One of the girls in yellow was playing the piano, and a tall red-haired lady from a famous chorus was singing. People were leaving the party now. It was time for me to go too so I went into the hall to get my hat. Just then the door of the library opened and Jordan and Gatsby came out. ‘I’ve just heard the most amazing thing,’ she whispered to me, ‘but I swore I wouldn’t tell.’ She yawned . ‘Please come and see me.’ And she hurried off to join her group, who were waiting for her at the door. The Great Gatsby 31 gesture: hand movement crescent moon: I went and joined the people around Gatsby. I wanted to explain to him that I had looked for him earlier in the evening. I also wanted to apologize for not recognizing him in the garden. ‘Don’t mention it, old sport,’ he answered, putting his hand on my shoulder. His words and his gesture were meant to be friendly and sincere but there was no real feeling behind them. FRIENDS Are Nick and Gatsby going to become good friends? What is the most important quality of a good friend? How do you try to be a good friend? ‘And don’t forget we’re going out in my new boat tomorrow,’ he added. ‘I’ll pick you up at nine o’clock.’ Then the butler said, ‘Philadelphia wants you on the phone, sir.’ ‘Tell them I’ll be right there. Good night old sport.’ ‘Good night,’ I replied. I walked home across the lawn. I stopped and turned round once. A small crescent moon was shining over Gatsby’s house. It was a beautiful clear night. I remembered the music and the laughter of the evening. The lights in the garden were still on but the house seemed very empty now.
