He says, “Let’s build that relationship even further by thinking about how that food got there. Let’s think about the farmers that work so hard to make that food. Let’s put the people eating that food in connection with them. We are out here. We love what we do. We care for our ani- mals. If you have questions we love to answer them.” Chittenden says when you are thinking about that local food movement, food- to-fork, when you are buying a product, you are buying from a local family. That will keep your local community stronger. EDUCATION OF FARM WOMEN Annie’s Project – Education for Farm Women is a 501(c)(3) non- profit organization dedicated to providing educational programs (Annie’s Projects) designed to strengthen women’s in the modern farm enterprise. Annie’s Projects foster problem solving, record keeping, and decision-making skills in farm women. Annie’s Project is scheduled for Nov 10, 17 and December 1 at the West Central Research and Center, North Platte, NE. Farm and ranch women are generating a cultural tide in American agriculture that is moving management, assets and opportunities to a new wave of farmers across the country. At Annie’s Project courses, farm women become empowered to be better business partners or sole operators through networks and by managing and organizing critical informa- tion. Annie’s Project is a 3-week course that is a discussion-based workshop bringing women together to learn from experts in produc- tion, financial management, human resources, marketing and the legal field. There's plenty of time for questions, sharing, reacting and connecting with presenters and fellow participants. It's a re- laxed, fun and dynamic way to learn, grow and meet other farm and ranch women. Whether new or experienced, understanding the five areas of agricultural risk, knowing how to analyze agricultural spreadsheets and other necessary skills are vital. Learning them in a friendly environment where questions and discussion are wel- comed, allow the learning process to flourish. KICK OFF EVENT FOR SEATBELT SAFETY Nebraska Highway Safety Administrator Fred Zwonechek on Thurs- day hosted a kick-off event at a Lincoln gas station to promote in- creased use of seat belts in Nebraska, especially at night. Zwonechek say nighttime driving carries a higher risk because of other drivers or conditions. Zwonechek says seven of every 10 un- belted fatalities happen at night. The campaign stresses by wearing seat belts and properly buckling children into age-and-size appro- priate car seats and booster seats, people can reduce the risk of serious injury and death in a crash by half. According to the latest statistics, 86 percent of Nebraskans use seat belts, which is less than the national average of 90 percent. SPORTS The McCook Bison cross country program will send three runners to the state meet in Kearney next week MHS senior Riley Mai finished ninth in the Class B4 boys division. The Lady Bison will send Elsi Rodewald and Grace Cappel after finishing in the top 15. The Hastings boys and Lexington girls were the district champions. The Bison boys number two doubles team of Logan Barenburg and Isaac Hinz are still in contention for medals after day one of the Class B state tennis meet in Lincoln. The Bison boys scored 14 points overall yesterday. The Lady Bison volleyball dropped a three-set match at North Platte. MHS will travel to Scottsbluff for the GNAC meet tomorrow. For the sixth straight game, the McCook Community College Lady Indians went to a fifth set but came up a winner Thursday night in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center over Trinidad State Junior College. MCC won 25-17, 25-15, 23-25, 22-25, 15-8 to im-prove to 6-0 at home this year. “I’m starting to think the girls just like getting in more time on the court,” MCC Coach Hayley Kobza said. “We should have won in three. We’re still mentally struggling and over-thinking things at times.” Freshman Faith Simpson (Wauneta-Palisade) led MCC with 23 kills on the night to go along with five service aces. “Trinidad came out in the third set and just changed up their game by putting in people whose purpose was to stop Faith and she got down on herself,” Kobza said. “There’ve been times this year she’s been triple-teamed and we have to make some adjustments when teams try to shut her down.” Sophomore Ryan Maddera (Greeley, Colo.) had 18 kills. Sophomore Hannah Emerson had nine kills, four block assists and one solo block. On Friday, 19-ranked Otero Junior College (21-2) comes to town for a 6 p.m. game.
