After some regattas last month there were blue sailors and a blue Race Committee, because it was so very cold and windy on the water. But everyone’s smiles returned after warming up in the Grill Room for trophy presentation. Along with PYC Mardi Gras Regatta we hosted the Flying Tigers East Coast

Championship that brought sailors to our bay from Texas, Kentucky, Michigan, and Georgia. The weather was breezier and cooler than they had planned, but they stuck it out and sailed seven races over three days.

Thanks to the generosity of Scott Harrell, we now have a flat screen TV in the Sailing Center. The donation was made a couple of weeks before Super Bowl Sunday and we quickly put together a Super Bowl party in the center. It was a modest but very noisy crowd. Who Dat?! This was a great dress rehearsal for other events that can be planned and enjoyed by the Membership.

In spite of the economic realities of this year resembling last year, you should all know that PYC is in better shape than most other private clubs. Your Board of Directors and I have been going over our Club’s finances and budgets extensively, looking for any savings that make sense. We can all hope that everything gets better as the year progresses, but we have to plan for what we know today. Whatever the outcome for this year, we should be ahead of the curve and not just react.

PYC has a revenue problem more than an expense problem. The best way to increase our Club’s revenue is to bring in new members. If you only count those members that have passed away then you will come to understand that recruiting new members is a constant.

Last year Commodore Burr and the Board wisely and bravely proposed a change in the revenue mix of dues, dining and bar which was approved by the Membership. It was and continues to be the right decision. Although we are less than a year into this change in the revenue mix, it appears to be working as planned. We do need to make some minor changes in pricing to reverse running in the negative particularly in dining and some happy hour prices. There are some items we are actually selling below cost. It was not intended that we would lose money on food and beverages, just run it at cost with a slight bias to the profit side for a margin of error. Rest assured that your Board is not any more interested in paying higher prices than you. Clearly, some pricing adjustments are now necessary but, they will be minor.

Mr. Suchy and Mr. Chan do a great job running the kitchen and staff as efficiently as possible. We as Members could do a better job when we need to cancel reservations to major events. Food is ordered and staff is scheduled based on the number of reservations. It is costly to the Club when we ramp up for a number and there are no shows. We know events occur beyond our control but, be aware that we will be enforcing a 24 hour cancellation policy. If you make a reservation and have to cancel, make sure you do it 24 hours before the event otherwise you will be charged.

A revenue idea that is well past the time of implementing is getting sponsors for our larger regatta events. Father Jack Gray has agreed to Chair the Sponsorship Committee. He is looking for ideas and help in getting this committee off the ground. If successful, it will be a great way to add revenue to the Club while promoting regattas. It will also raise PYC’s profile in our community. We all know it’s the South’s Finest Yacht Club, shouldn’t the rest of the world know too?

As I am sitting at my desk writing this article for March, it is raining with a forecast for snow later. Will winter ever end so we can once again enjoy our boats? However, I know with March Spring is just around the corner along with warm weather. Now all of the activities that I have missed this winter like sitting on the clubhouse porch at sunset enjoying one of

the best cheeseburgers in town or to just wandering down to the marina to see all of my fellow boaters to talk about Spring maintenance projects while drinking a cold beverage as we pass the time.

Warm weather also brings opportunities to expose your friends to PYC as prospective members. The Membership Committee has been working hard at putting together a membership drive to take advantage of all of the club’s activities this Spring. Without letting the “cat out of the bag” so to speak, we will begin a “Guest Week” kickoff on Opening Day April 11. As April approaches, look for more announcements about “Guest Week” and our Membership Drive targeted for April and May. We truly need to have every club member to be a representative for PYC and invite potential members to these events.

When discussing PYC with your prospective members about becoming part of a great Yacht Club, I identified five areas of interest that should be key selling points for you. Most of us have joined PYC for one of the following: (1) social activities (2) boating (regattas and cruising) (3) youth activities (4) dining (5) involvement. Four of the five activities are self explanatory, but you may be wondering about involvement. Many new members want to take an active part on committees that make PYC a great yacht club. At last count, PYC had sixteen committees from Entertainment to Landscaping. There is truly something for every new member’s area of interest to become involved in the Club.

Lastly, the Club offers an exclusive, private club experience where they can enjoy a friendly social environment with formal and informal activities. So, please help in getting the word out about “Guest Week” and bring your friends or prospective members to Opening Day at PYC on April 11.

As I write this Jib Sheet article, its 42* degrees outside at noontime. It’s raining at the waterfront, but in other areas of town it’s SNOWING! It seems that this year’s winter grasp, just won’t let go. But, despite the gloomy February weather, there were really big bright spots for PYC this past month. Scott Harrell donated a Big Screen TV to the Sailing

Center. The General Manager, Stephen Suchy along with PYC member Jim Oyler made sure it was installed in time for members to watch the Super Bowl game and celebrate the New Orleans Saints great victory.

Also last month the club hosted the Mardi Gras Regatta and the Flying Tiger’s first East Coast Championship. Both were sailed on the cold and windy Super Bowl weekend. Fleet Captain, Susan McKinnon has added off the water fun to the events with contests and race day beer specials.

For those that noticed, Mr Suchy has added several much needed bar stools to the Grill Bar. We have been looking for more bar stools for a while, but they had to match the existing stools. Thanks to one of our outstanding bartenders who noticed that the stools at McGuire’s Pub looked the same as ours, we were able to acquire a few more much needed bar stools.

We continue to see hopeful signs of progress with the EPA, (like watching a glacier move). Would I jinx any progress by hinting that’s it’s possible that we might see some dirt moved before the end of 2010. OK, I won’t make that prediction!

Spring turns to summer in a moment here in Pensacola providing perfect weather for impromptu gatherings on the PYC deck for lunch, drinks, or just passing the day watching boats on the bay or listening to

the happy squeals of children chasing each other on the lawn.As the weather starts to warm PYC will be also receiving more and more

visitors via boat. It has been recommended that we provide some similar amenities that other Club have for their visiting boaters. One of the items that we are looking for is a bike or two to help our guests get out and see more of our lovely city. If you have an old bike sitting around gathering dust, consider donating it to the Club. You can drop it off at the Sailing Center and let Mr. Suchy know you are donating it.

Speaking of donations please consider recycling your plastic Easter Eggs back to the Club for our upcoming Children’s Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday, April 4. We want to have as many eggs as possible for all our enthusiastic egg seekers. Just drop them off in Kelly Ring’s office and she will make sure the Committee gets them.

MEMBER NEWSWe all miss our friend Jimmie Broxton who lost his battle with cancer in

January. Jimmie was devoted to his family, loved to travel with his wife, Margo, and enjoyed their many friends. He was an accomplished sailor who for many years enjoyed competitive sailboat racing on the Bay with the McPherson’s on Duet and Bobby Kahn on Sirocco. But in recent years he enjoyed the camaraderie of the Thursday Afternoon Sailing Society (TASS).

The first of the year Stephen, Sondra, & Jenna Solice flew to Aspen to celebrate Jenna’s graduation from the U of A. They had a great time learning to ski and of course the two ladies did some power shopping.

Our congratulations to PYC members Nathan & Mary Ann Ford who are the proud new parents of an 8 lb baby boy, Grady Jameson Ford, born on February 10. Dr. Julia Hoffman delivered Grady at Sacred Heart Hospital. Dr. Hoffman just happens to be the niece of Bob & Jean Fleege. She practices with PYC member Dr. Suzanne Bush at the Women’s Center

Valentine’s weekend has taken on a very special meaning for PYC member Ernie Commins. He married his lady love, Betty Jernigan on his birthday, February 13. Congratulations! We look forward to seeing the happy couple around the Club.

Ann-Marie Bowyer reports in from the warm and balmy Caribbean. “Larry and I are sitting at the Lagoon Bar on the Dutch side of St. Martin. Weather is hot and windy. The place is currently a little crowded due to 8 to 12 foot swells out in the Atlantic. We are anchored on the French side of the island where we have sampled wonderful pastries and breads that could turn me into a fatty in a few days. And, the cheeses are divine here! The restaurants are typical French, small portions of outstanding food. The Dutch side is cheaper for groceries and many of the boat repair businesses are on this side along with the airport. When the weather permits we’ll be heading farther south, but not before sailing to St. Barts to hang out with the Rich&Famous in Gustavia.”

During the WFORC Series here in Pensacola Jeff & Ellen Hunt were invited to crew in the Heineken International Regatta in Puerto Rico. It didn’t take this sailing couple long to say “When do you want us to show up?” So don’t expect to get a hair appointment March 19 thru 21.

We congratulation Past Commodore Robby Youd on being named President and Chief Executive Officer of Coastal Bank and Trust of Florida.

In January the Super Bowl Regatta kicked off the season with 18-20 knot winds and gusts to 30. Scott Harrell did an outstanding job as PRO sending the boats around the bay in a Steeplechase. Betsy Moraski and her crew of Race Committee volunteers Beverly Stagg, Maryanne Hayes, Richard Brent, Dan Oczarczak, Jim and Linda Oyler, Rich Firth, and Commodore Foreman did a terrific

job. After the race Finesse crewmember, Lorrie Berry was the winner of the Super Bowl game pot by correctly guessing the Saints would win by 14 points.

The Mardi Gras Regatta in February was sailed in heavy breeze. Bernie Knight did an expert job as PRO sending the spinnaker fleet on a windward-leeward course. Non-spinnaker boats sailed a steeplechase. Serving on race committee were Betsy Moraski, Maryanne Hayes, Richard Brent, Bonnie McLeod, and Dan Oczarczak. During the after party at the Club, Rachel Gillette correctly guessed the strands of beads in the Mardi Gras bowl to win our regatta game.

Also in February the Flying Tigers returned to PYC for their East Coast Championships. Sailors from as far north to Michigan and west to Texas came to PYC to enjoy our hospitality and racing venue. Vice Commodore McMillan and his Race Committee did a great job organizing the seven race series. David Irwin on Maiden took first with 13 points, Doug Kessler on Liberty with 16 points second, and Roger Pollack on Vipercame in third with 23 points.

Derrick Riddle, with his dad Hunter crewing, sailed their Buccaneer in the Dead Dogs and Tin Whistles Regatta in Key Largo in early January. Sailing seven races in heavy air, they capsized, and blew out a spinnaker. Undaunted, Derrick and Hunter finished the regatta in first place.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACING begins on March 17. Please call or email the PYC Sailing Director to reserve an Optimist, Excite, 420, Laser or Flying Scot. All boats should be rigged and ready by 5:15pm. Races will start just to the east of PYC.

Green Fleet sailors should not launch their boats from the beach until they see the Race Committee (RC) boat on the water. The RC will run as many races as possible and make sure all boats are back at the dock and beach before sunset. After sailors derig their boats and put away all sailing gear, we will head for the PYC deck to enjoy burgers, trade stories of races won or lost, and talk about how each sailor can improve.

SPRING BREAK SAILING CLINICSAn advanced Optimist Sailing Spring Break Clinic will be held

March 29 thru 31 at PYC coached by Dodge Rees. There will be a limited number of spots open for sailors. Register early to reserve your spot. Also there will be a Flying Scot Clinic on the same dates with coaches to be announced. This clinic will hone your sailing skills for the GYA races that require three or four sailors per boat. There will also be a limited number of students, so register early.

These clinics will focus on racing tactics and will include classroom instruction reviewing the sailboat racing rules and how they apply to the race course. For more information or to register for either clinic contact PYC Sailing Director Stephen Wagner at [email protected].

US SAILING LEVEL I INSTRUCTOR COURSE OFFERED AT PYCThere are still nine spots available in this four-day US Sailing Level

I course offered at PYC on Easter Weekend April 1 thru 4. You must be 16 years old to take this course. Register early to avoid the $50 late fee at www.ussailing.org click on education then training.

WEEKEND SAILING OPPORTUNITIESEnjoy one design sailing on Saturdays from 12noon to 3pm or

Sundays 1 to 4pm. To participate in these weekend sailing clinics be sure to reserve a boat in advance. This is also a great time to learn how to check out a PYC boat, so you can learn how to use the hoist and where our sails and gear is stowed.

We will be using Regatta Network which will be linked to our website giving you the ability to see who is in which class plus this process will help you avoid most of the paperwork.

Junior membership. Meet Sailing Director and Sailing Instructors who will be teaching the sailors grades first grade thru high school. If you are a member bring your friends to the club to see the boats their children will sail. It is a great way to introduce the PYC to potential members.

The February raft up, the killer Pub Crawl at the beach February 20, was a great success! Our thanks to PBYC for hosting the joint party, and especially to Erica

Bush and David (DJ) Johnson with PBYC for their hospitality, and special kudos for supervising the bar crawling. As always, the pot luck dinner was excellent and the bring your dish breakfast superb highlighted by PYC’s complimentary bloodies and mimosas.

Nine boats showed up for the raft up, and roughly 40 brave individuals invaded the bars. The crowd started at PBYC (thanks Genella), and moved on to Hemingways, Bamboo Willy’s Captain Funs, the Sandshaker, and possibly others unremembered. The successful crawlers were visibly noted the next morning. The boaters included Jim & Linda Oyler on Parlay, Karen & Jere Allen on Recess, Marsha & Richard Roberts on BeachHouse, Steve Theis on the vicious S and S, Cliff & Kristen Roberts on WestMagnolia, Ron Bray & Crew on RokaDobi, Ted & Ebba Dampier on LadyofLeisure, Bernie Knight on Avalon, Bob & Carla Kriegel on CaribbeanSoul, and a fly by from Bill Mayo in his gorgeous Albin 28.

Our raft up for March is at a new and strange location, Old River. It was selected for those looking for horizons other than Little Sabine and Fort McRae. Hub Stacy’s and the Sunset Bar at Holiday Harbor are around the corner by dinghy (approximately one nautical mile), and for the adventurous the Florabama is about 3.5 NM by dinghy. Both Rabbit Island and the ICW spoil islands have sandy beaches for pets, kids, and swimming. The thrill seekers can head for the Florabama in the afternoon, and wind up at Hub Stacey’s with the rest of us for Happy Hour.

To get to the anchorage round marker 43 in the ICW and go southeast between Ono Island and the spoil island about a third of a mile, and then south to the anchorage near Rabbit Island. A good chart plotter or GPS will be helpful, daylight access and departure is recommended. The anchorage will be near N30 17.9, W 87 27.4 and the first waypoint after marker 43 N 30 18.35, W87 27.2, and the next waypoint N30 18.15, and W87 27.2. Of course these are just suggestions, and the prudent skipper is responsible for the safe operation and navigation of his vessel. Depths are adequate. We saw nothing less than eight feet at low tide. Watch out for the marked shoal to the east of Ono Island.

½ cup butter1 cup sugar1 cup eggs2 cups sifted all purpose flour1 tsp. baking soda1 tsp. baking powder½ tsp. salt1 cup sour cream1 tsp. vanilla

CinnamonNutfilling:1/3 cup brown sugar1 cup white sugar1 tsp. cinnamon1 cup chopped pecans

Cream butter until soft then add sugar and mix until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Sift flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt together. Add dry ingredients, alternately with the sour cream beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Stir in the vanilla.

Pour half of the batter into a lightly greased 8x12 baking pan. Cover with half of the nut filling and topping mixture. Pour remaining batter over nut mixture and top with the rest of the nut mixture. Bake in a preheated oven 325 degrees and bake approximately 45 to 50 minutes.

Blessing of the FleetOpening Day Ceremony

Sunday, April 11

The PYC Chapter of the Florida Commodores Association will host the Blessing of the Fleet in conjunction with the Opening Day Ceremony on Sunday, April 11. All Pensacola Bay area boat owners and skippers are invited to participate in both events. Boats may be tied up at the T-dock and will depart the T-dock no later than 3pm. Prizes will be given for the best decorated sail and powerboats. A minimum donation of $25 per boat is requested. Make checks payable to the PYC of the FCA.

4:30pm PYC Opening Ceremony
