Ano resulta? May nag-aaway hanggang magkasakitan at mauwi samalawakang riot.

WHEN the Quezon City 1.1 million vot-ers rendered their judgment yesterday, theyresoundingly picked honesty and proventrack record of their political leaders overphony promises and put-on persona ofthose who want to worm their way intocontrolling the city government.

Liberal Party mayoralty candidateHerbert ‘Bistek’ Bautista voiced confidencesaying that the overwhelming majority ofQC voters supported his call of clean poli-tics even when the black propagandamachineries of his rivals went into over-drive in trying to destroy his reputationduring the campaign.

“The public has gotten wise about thesedirty tricks and they have spoken againstthose who tried to hoodwink them by ped-dling lies. I campaigned on legitimate is-sues while my opponents scraped thegutter to throw false charges against me.I have absolute trust that the truth willbear me out,” Bautista stressed.

He said his unblemished record inpublic service and tangible programs forthe people has granted him a new man-date to continue serving them – this timeas Quezon City ’s new chief executive.

Bautista added that a similargroundswell of public support has car-ried forward the rest of his team includ-ing his running mate, LP vice mayoraltybet Joy Belmonte and their lineup in thecity council.

NOYNOY STARTS SEARCH FOR CABINETSENATOR Benigno "Noynoy"

Aquino III is in the process of assem-bling his Cabinet in the event he's of-ficially proclaimed as the new Presi-dent.

Aquino said Corazon "Dinky"Soliman, the former secretary of theDepartment of Social Welfare andDevelopment, has accepted his offerto the same post

"We're already doing a talent searchfor the Cabinet positions...who willactually be implementing our policyguidelines and our directions..."he tolda press conference in his native Tarlac.

I first talkedto Dinky for the DSWD post. She agreedto it once I get the power. On June 30,maybe she would be the first that I willpush in the Commission on Appoint-ments]," he said.

"As of now, it's only Dinky that I'vetalked to, who has accepted," he said.

Aquino said he's also consideringhis cousin, Gilberto "Gibo" Teodoroto be part of his Cabinet.

Perobukas po tayo sa kung anongpakikipanayam [Of course, we willunderstand if he will not talk to usin the coming days. We have to ab-sorb everything that happened, allthe lessons. But we are open to anycommunication]," he said.

Aquino also said he's confidentthat his runningmate Mar Roxaswould be able to catch up with MakatiMayor Jejomar Binay who's leadingin the tightly contested vice presi-dential race.

MANILA Archbishop Gaudencio Car-dinal Rosales praised yesterday the suc-cessful automated elections despite somereports of glitches such as defective pre-cinct count optical scans (PCOS) thatcaused delays.

Rosales, along with Media Office di-rector of the Catholic Bishops’ Confer-ence of the Philippines (CBCP) Monsi-gnor Pedro Quitorio III, led the thanks-giving prayer at 6 a.m. at the commandcenter of the Parish Pastoral Council forResponsible Voting (PPCRV) in Manila.

The archbishop likewise commendedthe successful automated election, de-scribing it as a “milestone” in thecountry’s history.

He also lauded the voters for patientlywaiting their turn in the long queuesunder the intense summer heat to be ableto exercise their right to vote.

“Thank you to those behind this au-tomation. They did a good job,” he said.

He further added that although thepolls encountered some glitches in theuse of the PCOS machines, the electionsturned out to be generally peaceful andorderly. Angelie Escandor

Cardinal commendsautomated polls

Automation part of Gloria legacyMALACAÑANG claimed yes-

terday that the successful conductof the first-ever automated elec-tions in the country is part of Presi-dent Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’slegacy.

“The nation had spoken. Presi-dent Arroyo had delivered on herpromise to hold the first-ever auto-mated national elections,” saidPress Undersecretary for Opera-tions Rogelio Peyuan in a pressbriefing.

Peyuan described lastMonday’s election as generallysuccessful, with a big voters’ turn-out and less election-related vio-lence than in previous presiden-

tial elections.“With automation, the people

were able to observe immediatelythe counting of their ballots in dif-ferent polling centers of the coun-try, which is due to the coopera-tion of teachers, the election inspec-tors, the Armed Forces and Philip-pine National Police, the media, thechurch and so many other volun-teers,” Peyuan said.

Peyuan said in the last threeweeks, the entire governmentmachinery has been preparing forthe smooth transfer of all materials, funds and programs and aninventory of what has to be turnedover to the incoming administration.

Comelec waits for all results before proclamationTHE Commission on Elections

(Comelec) said all winners in the sena-torial and party-list races in lastMonday’s automated polls will not beproclaimed unless all the results havebeen counted.

The Comelec also serves as the Na-tional Board od Canvassers which iscounting the votes on this year’s elec-

tion, the first ever computerized elec-tion in the country.

“Way back then, the practice wasto proclaim winners even without com-plete election results if only to avoidprotests. But here under the [auto-mated] system, there can be no proc-lamation unless there is a hundredpercent count,” said Comelec chair-

man Jose Melo at a press briefing onTuesday.

Melo issued the statement after theComelec released partial official re-sults of the elections early Tuesday. He noted, however, that they wouldno longer release any updates aftertheir last report based on votes castby 30,431,735 voters.

But in Taguig city, tension contin-ues to mount a day after supportersof the Cayetanos and the Tingastraded barbs and complaints of ha-rassment.

On Tuesday, tension pervaded thecity hall as supporters of both campsawait the transmittal of election re-turns.

Taguig City-Pateros 1st DistrictRepresentative Maria Laarni “Lanie”Cayetano, wife of Senator Alan Pe-ter Cayetano, is running for mayoragainst Dante Tinga, father of thirdand last-term Mayor Freddie Tinga.

The gates of city hall were lockedas supporters of Mayor Tinga andcity hall employees remained insidethe compound while Cayetano sup-porters, many wearing pink shirtslined the street outside.

Authorities has deployed a platoonof police personnel including a con-tingent of civil disturbance manage-ment unit to contain the crowd andprevent any violent confrontationbetween the opposing camps.

Dr. Meleda Polita, secretary of thecanvassers’ board, said 92 percent ofelection returns have been transmit-ted to them as of 12 noon Tuesday.

The official blamed the cause ofthe delay in the transmittal to a tech-nical glitch in the laptop they areusing.

ASAP willing to sit down and talk with PASAIF only the leadership of the Philippine

Amateur Swimming Association (PASA) ledby Mark Joseph would open its ears and rea-son, its differences with the outspoken Phil-ippine Aquatics Sports Association or ASAPwould not be rebellious without a just cause.

The brave women of ASAP just want Jo-seph to clean up his act by calling a legiti-mate election of PASA officers because hisascendancy to presidency and his second termreelection was a pure sham.

Why, because he does not belong to or haveany swimming club which is a pre-requisitefor becoming a PSA chieftain.

Besides, his reelection held two weeks ago

in Cebu City was held only two days beforethe date instead of the customary 15-daynotice.

According to ASAP vice president Jane Ong,ASAP is not exactly closing the door on work-ing hand in hand with the country’s nationalsports association for swimming.

“Sure, why not. We’re open to that,” Ongsaid when asked about it at the Tuesday PSAForum.

Joseph was also invited in the weekly ses-sion presented by Outlast Battery, PAGCOR,Accel and Shakey’s, but said he wasn’t avail-able as he was out of town for the nationalelections.

“But that would happen ifand when a trade is made.Right now, we’re all talkingtheoretically.”

Alvarez concurred with thePBA commissioner.

“When that request comes, the Chairman would not hesi-tate to call a meeting to tacklethe case,” said Alvarez, alsoteam manager of Air21, in thesession presented by OutlastBattery, PAGCOR, Shakey’sand Accel.

Our Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadWhen I have asked suffering people, “Who helped

you?” not one person has mentioned a PhD from aprestigious seminary or a famous philosopher. All ofus have the same capacity to help those who hurt.

No one can package or bottle the “appropriate”response to suffering. If you go to the sufferers them-selves, some will recall a friend who cheerily helpeddistract them from their illness. Others think such anapproach insulting. Some want honest, straightfor-ward talk; others find such discussion unbearablydepressing.

There is no magic cure for a person in pain. Mainly, such a person needs love, for love instinctively detectswhat is needed. Jean Vanier, who founded the L’Archemovement for the developmentally disabled, says:“Wounded people who have been broken by sufferingand sickness ask for only one thing: a heart that lovesand commits itself to them, a heart full of hope forthem.”

Such a love may be painful for us. But real love, the apostle Paul reminds us, “Bears all things, believesall things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Cor.13:7).

As is so often His pattern, God uses very ordinarypeople to bring about His healing. Those who sufferdon’t need our knowledge and wisdom, they need ourlove. — Philip Yancey

O brother man, fold to thy heart thy brother!Where pity dwells, the peace of God is there;

To worship rightly is to love each other,Each smile a hymn, each kindly deed a prayer. —

WhittierThey do not truly love who do not show their

love. —Shakespeare
