Graybeards Honor Steve “Poppa” Stathis On Saturday January 29th the phil- anthropic organization known as the Graybeards held their 10th annual dinner dance fundraiser at the El Caribe Cater- ing Hall in Mill Basin, Brooklyn. The extremely well attended affair honored the Graybeard President and Co-founder Steve “Poppa” Stathis with the Don “DH” Hart Memorial award. The evening featured a cocktail hour, dinner, dancing, a Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle. One of the more memorable moments of the night came from a moving and funny video tribute to Steve starring his family and fellow Graybeard co- founders. The video related the story of the founding of the venerable organization, from the conception of the idea to the first meeting at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club. The main focus of it all being Steve, who endured some good-natured ribbing from his long time friends broaching subjects of the size of his head and lack of basketball skills, but at the same time every person interviewed lauded his organizational skills and can do attitude. The emcee of the evening, Graybeard Board of Director Mike Lee, did a master- ful job of filling in for the usual emcee that happened to the one getting honored, and ran down the list of Graybeard accom- plishments of 2010. The list included; the annual Harlem Magic Masters basketball game, the Spring Spruce-Up that built a wheelchair ramp for a lady on Arcadia Walk, the annual Wounded Warrior Sum- mer Water Festival, the Family Fun Run, theAnnual Golf Outing which raised over $13,000 for a local family in need, a Blood Drive that collected 129 pints of blood and the annual Turkey Drive that delivered 75 Turkeys and 20 hams to the Saint Rose and St. Mary’s food pantries. After giving the run down of events Mike Lee and Graybeard cofounder Kevin Boyle presented the Don “DH” Hart Memorial Award to Steve Stathis. During his acceptance speech Steve in his typical attention deflecting style presented beauti- ful bouquets of flowers to as he explained “the heart and soul of the Graybeards, and the two hardest working people in the room” former and current Graybeard office administrators Mary Ellen Olsen and Linda Marten respectively. After the award presentation it was on to Graybeard rule number one, which is to have fun. The Graybeards are a 501(c)3 non- profit organization dedicated to helping their neighbors in times of need. BREEZY FIRE LINES By BIG JACK

On Sunday Jan. 23rd at 11:00 AM, while most Pointers were enjoying their Sunday bacon and eggs, we responded with our brother fi refi ghters from through-out the N.Y. metro area to the FAA Head-quarters near JFK Airport to participate in a drill on aircraft emergencies. Chief Marty Ingram, a FAA Safety Manager, arranged this very informative drill. The FAA’s experts instructed us on how best we can respond to emergencies involving everything from piper cubs to 747s, and the Port Authority Police Department also made an excellent presentation on their equipment and emergency response procedures. We thank Chief Ingram, and the offi cials from the FAA and the Police offi cers from Port Authority Police De-partment for all their hard work, which made this a great learning experience for our fi refi ghters.

FIRE SAFETY TIPCarbon monoxide is a tasteless,

colorless and odorless gas that kills thousands of Americans each year. Therefore, if you have not already done so, please go immediately to the Hardware Store, buy several CO detec-tors and install them throughout your home, especially near the bedrooms. If a CO detector goes off, immediately get everyone out of the house, including yourself, and then use your cell phone or a neighbor’s phone to call Security at 718-634-2727, so that the offi cer can dispatch us and call the F.D.N.Y. and LIPA to correct this very dangerous and life threatening condition.

Also, keep in mind that CO detectors only last about fi ve years. Therefore, if you’re not sure about the age of your CO detectors, you should immediately replace them.

Gerard Carney also reminds us to dig all the snow away from our car’s exhaust pipes, before starting the vehicles on a

snowy day.$1000 CLUB NEWS

Our 2010 club year fi nished up in grand style with our club members enjoying a delicious buffet dinner from the Harbor Light and cheering our lucky January $1,000 winner Mr. Ganley from Irving Walk, Regina Anderson from Bayway Walk and Paul Rooney from Kildare Walk, who each won $125 and our $50 winner Kevin Reilly from 12th Ave.

We’re all looking forward to the fi rst drawing for the 2011 club year, which

will occur on Sunday Feb. 27 starting at 2:00 PM. You can join in on all the fun at our drawings and could very well be our next $1000 winner, by sending to us at 1 Firemen’s Plaza Breezy Point, NY 11697 your tax deductible $100 donation, and as always, we thank you for your fantastic support of our life saving work.

New Bike Rule Questions? The Breezy Point Cooperative is instituting a new requirement with regard

to bicycles. In an effort to curtail bike thefts and trespassers, the Public Safety Committee of the Cooperative recommended to, and the Board of Directors ap-proved, requiring registration of all bicycles in the Cooperative. However, there are some questions that remain with the new requirements. Some of them are:

- Why will it take until 2012 to end the initial registration period? - The tricycles included in the plan, is that only the adult tricycles popular

with the senior citizens or does it include children’s tricycles? - What is considered a visible location on the bicycle? - Will security be conducting stop checks? - Do we really want security confi scating unregistered bikes? - If an owner is not readily available at the time Security is checking an un-

registered bike – do they have the legal authority to confi scate the bike? - Will there be passes for guests that may bring their bicycles with them? - How much will this registration program cost in total (not just the cost of

stickers) but for labor costs of having an employee at all functions and associa-tion meetings until Summer of 2012?

- Does this lead to an annual fee in the future similar to parking passes to pay for on-going operational costs?

- Are they going to be equipped to handle the rush at Christmas time and in late June?

- Has this plan been thoroughly thought through?

TEEN NEWS& PRE-TEENS TOO!

by Gert Hendry

Snow, snow, snow and more snow – this has been some weather for Janu-ary. Hope you boys and girls have been “busy” shoveling helping your parents and neighbors, and also enjoying the fun associated with snow. I know I did with our granddaughter and great grandchildren – we, along with their Dad, built a fort J. They had already made a snowman with all the trim-mings. At this writing the prediction is for more of the white stuff can’t say I’m looking forward to it. My dance classes have been cancelled because of all the snow. Spring & Summer will be welcome after this winter. I’m sure you will agree. Most of you from this com-munity have had the benefi t of a Catholic School Education or the good fortune of going to CCD on Wednesdays – if you go to public school.

In the newspapers this week there have been pages on the advantage of a Catholic education. Many students attending Catholic schools are not

necessarily Catholic but their parents are aware of the well-rounded education offered to their children. The one area mentioned in these pages of education “the low brow pop culture is eroding the traditional structure of American Family Life. Parents seek a refuge for their children in the Catholic School system to escape the effects of the pop culture on their children. The word integrity was used in a few instances and the meaning of integrity, a noun, is adherence (being faithful) to moral and ethical (right or wrong conduct) principles; sound of moral character; honesty. Which I am sure most of you boys and girls have Integrity, and try to be faithful to what you have been taught. This word can be used when you are tempted to do something you know is not right. That is why the word think is used in this column now you can have integrity to guide you. Usually parents instill and establish priorities while you are progressing in life. Some children

do not have that guidance and good fortune as a result they resort to other means in their life and do not achieve meaningful goals.

Did you know Whales and Dolphins have been returning to the waters just outside New York Harbor? They have “increased ten fold”. A captain of two ferryboats from the Rockaway’s says, “We used to see 10 whales a year now we see 100. Between June and September they see Dolphins on a daily basis. The Captain of the American Princess earlier this month started weekend tours to observe the mammals off Staten Island. Experts say, “Anti hunting laws and cleaner waters may have brought back whales and their “cousins” after being largely absent for a century. Cornell University Professor estimates that as many as 50 fi n whales now live full time in the waters just past the Verrazano Bridge. He is hoping to raise $1 million to revive the whale study.

A woman on the Citizens Cam-paign for the Environment stated “I know more from 19th century books than I do from anything printed in the last century”. Perhaps the Professor is right we do need to revive the study of whales.

A State Senator from Brooklyn who was in the N.Y.P.D. (New York Police Dept.) for 22 years is in a new

online video that shows parents how to be aware of contraband (illegal goods imported or exported) in children’s possession. He explains that, “Kids are not entitled to privacy at home”. “There is no 4th Amendment or 1st Amendment or ANY Amendment right inside your home.” Also “Parents write the Constitution for what rights are in their homes and the one right they must understand is the right to protect all members of their household. He goes on to say – “a small caliber weapon could be hiding in a jewelry case”. “Run your hands over the pillows, see if you feel anything unusual”. He shows in the video how a bag of Marijuana could be stashed under the clothes of a doll and how a crack pipe can be unnoticed in the zippered pocket of a backpack. The question is “If you boys and girls could have found it on the street? This is when your Moms or Dads will question you to fi nd out what you are doing with it.” He also goes on to say how many of your parents are “disconnected from the drug and violence culture”? They believe it is on T.V. not in your house. He, himself, searches the bedroom of his 15- year-old son and unannounced inspects his son’s book bag and says, “All parents need to do the same even if you are trusted by your parents”.

WHISPERING BREEZES“Heard around town that…”

Congratulations to Steve Stathis and the Graybeards on another suc-cessful and extremely fun dinner dance fundraiser. It was great night with even greater company. The Graybeards re-mind everyone that they were created to help neighbors in need and if anyone knows of a neighbor in need call them at 718-634-6812.

Sick of the snow yet? Spring is just around the corner and will be here

before you know it. The fi rst day of Spring is March 20th which is only 44 days away. We’re almost there. Please remember to check in on your elderly neighbors, see if they need anything from the store or just someone to talk if only for a few moments it will mean the world to them.

And speaking of Spring understand that groundhogs Punxsutawney Phil and Staten Island Chuck agree – it will be

an early Spring! We hope so!!Understand the Breezy Point Catho-

lic Club’s Pipes and Drum Night at the Races fundraiser was a success, and some much-needed funds were raised for this great organization.

This Sunday from 8AM to 2PM the Rockaway Point Fire Department in conjunction with Blessed Trinity Par-ish and New York Blood Services will be hosting a Blood Drive outside of St. Thomas More Church. Please take the time and donate a pint.

Next Friday night will be Blessed Trinity CYO Meets the Aviator’s fundraiser Hockey Game featuring the Brooklyn Aviators versus the Cape

Cod Barons at Aviator Sports Center on Flatbush Avenue. Tickets will be sold at the CYO clinics and home games this weekend or they could be procured by fi lling out the form in the ad in this paper and returning it to the rectory to the attention of Tony Burti.

This Sunday is the Super Bowl. Haven’t decided which team to root for, but will probably go for the AFC. Enjoy the game, the commercials and the camaraderie that goes along with it, and if at a Super Bowl Party please don’t drink and drive, the life you save might very well be your own.

Thirty

He does not call it spying on you it is protecting the home you live in”. These are you boys and girls who may have professional parents, teachers, medical and decent parents who love you, but not aware of the possibilities that confront them. Teens, Pre Teens, Young Adults don’t be part of the group who are tempted to do anything that is harmful to you. Think, have integrity and be a model to your friends.

Again, a word to the wise is suf-fi cient.

In closing from my Hugs Calendar. “I don’t know if you heard about this or not, but you already possess one of the most timeless treasures and gift ever given anyone. Not only is it price-less, it was formed and cast through unimaginable sacrifi ce, suffering and self-denial. It was kept safe generation after generation and the one after that. That Gift is God’s word the bible.” Read it you will get many benefi ts from it. Anonymous

I just read February’s bulletin with some disappointment. The snow re-moval was done as well as possible con-sidering the severity of the storms. But my pet project, Bicycle Registration, sounds like it’s going to be just another summer like all the past summers of no enforcement of the bike rules.

Registration is like the license plate on a car. No license plate, and its just another car. Who owns it?

Registration on a bike immedi-ately lets anyone easily identify who the owner is, not immediately, but by contacting Security with the Registra-tion number.

Will Management post signs on the walks to the beach banning bikes?

Probably not. If the signs do go up will there be enforcement? Probably not.

If the reason there are no signs banning bikes on the beach walks is because the Lifeguards use bikes, then resolve that by not allowing Lifeguards the use of bikes on the walks. They are all young and in the prime of life, and could either bring their lunch or walk home if they chose to.

Our new Bicycle Registration will begin this coming spring 2011 and all bikes will have to have been registered by the end of the summer of 2012. Does that seem like a very long time to accomplish? It certainly does when it took only 2 days for the Coop to grind off the sign painted on Jamaica walk’s

sidewalk that said, “Please walk your bikes past this point”.

Late this past summer an elderly resident from Jamaica Walk had her hip fractured by a young bike rider on the sidewalk in front of the Ridgewood Bank, at the shopping center.

After this happened the residents of Jamaica Walk went on the warpath with bike riders on the walk. It became so bad that a Good Samaritan that went to the aid of, and assisted our resident when she was struck, rode over to our walk to fi nd out how our resident was doing in the Hospital. He was shouted and cursed at by a very vocal resident. A very embarrassing event.

The shopping center is a Catch 22. People on bikes head there from every direction. They’re parked all over the sidewalk, and in and around the bike

racks. Bikes are a way of life in Breezy especially on weekends. Why? Because if you take your car to pick up a gallon of milk, your parking spot is gone. No one to date has pulled their car out of a parking lot spot and put their wagon in the spot to reserve it, but it may come to that.

After all the to-do about riding bikes on Jamaica Walk a family that were habitual riders on the walk, left Jamaica walk, and then rode to the beach on an adjacent walk. So much for rules.

Will Coop Management put no bike riding signs on the beach walks?

Will they enforce the rule? Will the Coop enforce no bike rid-

ing on Point Breeze, Oceanside, Ocean, Bedford, Reid?

Or will it be just another summer, like every other?

Bye.

Weiner Lauds Ruling Freeing up Middle-Class Housing Loans

After news that the Federal Housing Finance Agency will modify its proposal to allow purchasers of co-ops and condos that feature a fl ip tax to continue to have access to federal loans from Fannie and Freddie Mac and the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), Rep. Anthony D. Weiner released the following statement:

“This was a case of a clearly unintended consequence that the agency wisely avoided. Flip taxes are important and fair for co-ops in New York City. A ban would have been disastrous. I’m pleased with the fi nal rule.”

This past October, Weiner wrote to acting Director of the FHFA, Ed-ward DeMarco, asking for a modifi cation to the pending FHFA guidance to ensure that New York City homebuyers would be still be able to access important programs maintained by Fannie, Freddie, and the FHA.

Singin’ the Post-Holiday BluesDuring the days leading up to

Christmas, my kids were on their best behavior.

Each time they started to act up, I immediately invoked the dreaded Santa threat.

“If anyone smacks or hits, I’m call-ing Santa Claus myself and telling him you’re bad. He’s in my Contacts list.”

I held my phone up for added ef-fect.

The fi ghting ceased immediately. They even used please and thank you without being prodded.

However, a few days after Christmas, my kids quickly reminded me that holi-day cheer and goodwill was long over.

“Does anyone want breakfast?” I asked.

No answer.Enthusiastically, I prepared my eggs

and coffee. Before I sat down to enjoy my meal, I knew better. I’d ask one last time if they wanted something to eat.

“Are you guys sure you don’t want any breakfast?”

“Yeah, we’re sure,” they respond-ed.

Music to my ears.I sat on the couch, placed my food

on the snack tray and then stretched. I readied myself for the fi rst delicious

bite. “Dad, I’m hungry,” my son said. “Daddy, I’m ready for breakfast,”

Lexy added.“What the hell?” I muttered to my-

self, mixed in with a few other curse words.

I could simply pretend I didn’t hear it. That might work.

My son raced into the living room and tugged my shirt. “Dad, I’m really hungry.”

Lexy stormed in behind him to ensure I couldn’t ignore them. “Daddy, I’m hungry. I want breakfast now!”

For a brief moment, I contemplated any potential threats I might have at my disposal.

Ask nicely for breakfast or I’ll...cancel Groundhog’s Day or George Washington’s Birthday.

Wait until I start eating then ask for breakfast, huh? That’s it; the next time your friends come over, I’m go-ing to dance in front of them...in my pajamas.

However, my wife would never al-low me to do that. “We don’t want to traumatize the poor kids,” she’d say.

Unfortunately, without the threat of putting them on Santa’s naughty list, I

FINAL CALL! This weekend is the fi nal opportunity for you to get your tickets for the upcoming Blessed Trin-ity CYO fundraiser, “Blessed Trinity CYO Meets the New York Aviators.” Tickets are currently on sale for the New York Aviators hockey game vs. the Cape Cod Barons on February 11, 2011. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at the Aviator Sports Complex in Floyd Ben-nett Field. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children. This Saturday and Sunday, February 5th and 6th, tickets will be sold at the newly-refurbished Monsignor Connelly Parish Center (formerly known as Saint Thomas More Hall) during Blessed Trinity CYO clinics and home games.

If you cannot get to the Parish Cen-ter this weekend, or are not involved in CYO and would like to attend the hockey game, you can drop off your ticket orders at the Saint Thomas More rectory. Put your orders in an envelope marked “Attention: Tony Burti, CYO Parish Athletic Director” and include your name and telephone number, the number of adult and children’s tickets that you want to purchase, and cash or a check made out to Blessed Trinity Parish. If you cannot get to

the rectory, email this columnist at [email protected] with your contact information and the number of tickets you want to purchase, and arrangements will be made to take your order.

This event, which supports the wonderful youth of our very special community, is not to be missed. It promises to be a night of exciting professional hockey and reasonably-priced family fun, located only minutes from home. There will even be family food specials upstairs at the Aviator Sky Box on game night, including a $5 hamburger special, 50-cent chicken wings, the “Enforcer” (a quarter-pound hot dog on an Italian hero topped with French fries, chili, nacho cheese, and hot peppers – all for just $4), and one free kids meal with the purchase of one adult entrée. A nice idea for a date, it’s less expensive than going to a movie. Also, it’s great for all you teenagers and young adults looking for something to do on a winter weekend night.

Please don’t forget to tell the MTA that we need more Q35 buses. Email [email protected] and [email protected] EV-ERY TIME you experience a problem

on the Q35, either during the morning or evening rush, or anytime during the day in between. Briefl y describe the problem or combination of problems (overcrowding, scheduling issues, buses that bypassed your stop and left you stranded, or any other trouble). Include the date, time, and the bus number (four-digit bus numbers – for example 3 5 2 7 – are printed inside the bus, over the front windshield). Recently, an MTA Radio Operations vehicle has been spotted at the Beach 169th Street bus stop, as well as at the Flatbush and Nostrand Avenue “Junction.” It looks like the MTA is

beginning to get the message, but we have to keep up the pressure. All of us need to let the MTA know that the residents of the Rockaways are liter-ally being left out in the cold, and this cannot go on.

Hope to see you all on February 11th for “Blessed Trinity CYO Night” at the New York Aviators hockey game!

Respectfully submitted,Ellen [email protected](You may notice that this column is

a bit shorter than usual. Sorry … have to get back outside and shovel. Is this winter ever going to end?!?)

Pheffer Gives Proclamation To Point Breeze Fire Department

Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer presented the Point Breeze Volunteer Fire Department with an NYS Assembly Proclamation honoring their 100 years of service to the people of Breezy Point. Though Assemblywoman Pheffer was present at the 100 year celebration of the PBFD held on Oc-tober 2, 2010, she was unable to produce a proclamation for the ceremony because of campaign rules. Ms. Pheffer promised to do so after a successful election, and last Sunday came through on her promise by presenting the proclamation to PBFD Chief Marty Ingram during the PBFD’s hundred dollar booster club drawing.

CLUE: SUMMER FRUIT DRINK

ROCKAWAY DOINGSby SARA & RICHARD BERGER

Has anybody else noted that, when there is heavy news coverage of something related to the weather, that the TV stations invariably show, on the split screen, the fi eld reporters freezing or getting soaked, but then go to an in-studio reporter fi rst?

On Monday, January 21st, there was a Town Meeting held at the Bayswater Jewish Center, at Dickens Street and Healy Avenue in Far Rockaway, hosted by the Bayswater Civic Association. Rather than giving a list of them, suffi ce to say we had at least 30 New York City Commission-ers, Chiefs, Deputy Commissioners and Chiefs, and organization Presidents on the dais, and Mayor Bloomberg, facing at least 300 Rockaway residents, most with questions to ask the Mayor.

Mr. Bloomberg opened with a brief re-cap of his “State of the City” report, stating the federal Stimulus money was just about used up with no replenishment in sight, that he is going to try and keep staffi ng levels at current levels, without lay-offs, of the NYPD, FDNY, FDNY EMS, and the teachers. He also said he was going to try not raising taxes, but while trying to meet the obligations of those receiving pensions now, it is questionable for new city employees. Crime is down, citywide, but the city is remaining vigilant, due to the bombing at a major airport in Moscow, Russia, earlier that day.

Then, the fl oor was opened to ques-tions.

One questioned the apparent lack of community input on the “closing” of the Far Rockaway and Beach Channel High Schools. The Mayor mentioned the “breaking up” into the smaller “acad-emies” gave a higher number of teachers to a lower number of students, with higher numbers of students graduating.

Another questioned plans for an emergency coastal evacuation. The Mayor admitted all plans could always stand for improvement, but to get the latest, check in, on line, with the Offi ce of Emergency Management. Also, we were reminded that if the evacuation order comes, fol-

low it!Yet another asked about reducing the

mosquito problem in Bayswater, which, due to the cold outdoor temperature, got a laugh, even from the questioner. The an-swer was, the city will as always, attempt to drain ponding water, and, as needed, Larvaecide will be sprayed.

The next question dealt with reducing crime further, and background checks on potential new Public Housing residents. While crime is down, there are admitted concentrations of criminal activity. The Housing Bureau of the NYPD has a spe-cial unit that does background checks on potential new Housing residents, and is trying to keep known criminals out.

The next question was on street fl ood-ing, with the answer being that DEP is trying to keep ahead of it with catch basin cleaning, and $210 Million in design already committed to the problem.

Then, a traffi c related question. With new housing, the closing of sections of Rockaway Freeway, and the bike lanes be-ing added, could the bike lanes be moved to less traffi cked East-West roadways? As per the Department of Transporta-tion, there have been no lanes lost, just a narrowing of them, adding to “Traffi c Calming”. On hearing the general nega-tive reception of this by the audience, the Mayor admitted that further meetings and studies would be needed.

One woman complained about prob-lems with the Access-A-Ride services, that she was being routed from the Peninsula through the Bronx to her appointments in Manhattan, some delaying her so badly, she was not only missing her medical appointments, but the return trip pickup appointments as well. She felt that when she complained, that it was only to the effect of “venting”, not getting any atten-tion or action. Mayor Bloomberg agreed that better ideas were needed, then went on to mention that the MTA, which runs the Access-A-Ride, was considering a Voucher system that would pay for taxis to

be utilized. The woman voiced the opinion that the individual companies that make up Access-A-Ride should be responsible for their actions, or lack of same.

Mention was made of a street barrier missing in Bayswater, where the edge of the street was actually collapsed in to the bay. A survey team had checked

it out that morning, to determine if the remaining street would support the weight of a “Jersey Barrier”.

Although the audience had many more questions, the Mayor asked that further questions be written on cards distributed at the meeting, and that his offi ce, or the respective involved city agencies, would respond to them within a few days. The meeting lasted a bit more than an hour.

Richard just watched a tape delayed “Cop” drama, and makes the following observation: the teams of bad guys for hire no longer seem to be stereotyped Italians anymore. They’ve become Ser-bians, or former KGB offi cers. Instead of the bad guy being called “Tony”, now it’s “Drago”.

As we write this, on a Saturday, we’re expecting snow again in mid-week. We think we might break the record for the snowiest January from when the record books were opened, a record we’d prefer not to set. However, as we see the dusting we got last night, on top of the leftover snow piles from the storm from the day after Christmas, and all that followed, that 2 Sanitation Gar-bage trucks, and a salt spreader truck, all with the blades down, and the spreader throwing salt, just proceeded, in a conga line, past our house. Twice!

In spite of all the frequent snowfalls, it appears that New York City is trying to prevent this winter’s numerous snow events from being catastrophic, at least on our block.

We had one incident of good neigh-bor actions. Some of you might be aware that we live on one of the streets in Belle

Harbor/Neponsit that, during the sum-mer, doesn’t allow parking on weekends or holidays. We lent our driveway to a neighbor with a short driveway, so his guests could park off street last sum-mer. He repaid us by using his power snowblower to not only clear our front walk, but our 80 foot long driveway as well, of the most recent foot deep plus snow fall. We believe we got the best of that bargain.

“Neither snow, or rain, or gloom of night…” We all learned that motto of the US Postal Service as children. They sure are living up to it this year. Even with the mish-mash of the snow removal from the fi rst storm, the mail got through, and in a timely fashion, too.

In protest of the weather, Richard has vowed not to eat any “Snow Peas” until mid summer.

As we write this column, we note that, as a “Pre-Event” to the Rolex 24, at the Daytona Speedway in Florida, a blind man is going to drive a car, spe-cially equipped with assorted devices to assist him in driving. This car and driver are sponsored by the National Federation of the Blind, of which Sara is a sighted member.

23rd A.D., Part B

As we write our column on Monday January 31, it marks the 15th anniversary of the death of my mom, Jennie Simon. When I lost my mom, I lost my best friend and biggest supporter. Everyone knew my mom because she was as outspoken as me. That’s where I got it from. She taught me to stand up for my rights and the rights of the people.

For many, many years she sold Avon products where I assisted her. She became the number one salesperson and a member of the President’s Club. Mom did a lot of volunteer work through the years for HILI, HAFTRA Yeshiva where her dear friends Nina Listman, Flo Altschuler and I worked many worked many bingos on Saturday eve-nings after Shabbos, and Thursday evenings on beach 19th Street.

On Saturday evening I would fi rst call bingo for Philip Port American Cancer So-ciety, my mom’s favorite charity. She played bingo while I called. Then we proceeded to HILI on beach 19th Street. My dad Joe and Flo’s husband Al would enjoy playing bingo while we called the numbers. Nina and Flo made a great team with us. Both of them were outstanding mothers and grandmoth-

ers. Unfortunately, Nina passed away. Flo, thank God, is still going strong and she has taken over the duties of my mom. I want to wish her daughter Michelle and son-in-law Benny a mazel tov on her son’s Bar Mitzvah last Sunday.

Just this past June my last aunt, Yetta, passed away in her sleep. I’m sure that my mom met her at the gates of heaven and welcomed her in. My mom and my aunt got along very well. Many times my aunt came from New Jersey to Rockaway and spent time with my mom. Although many times they disagreed they loved each other and enjoyed each other’s company. I was very, very depressed when my last aunt passed away. We spent so many hours talking and getting together and reminiscing about my mom and the past.

My sister and I have a standing thought if we had one more hour with my mom what would we do? I said I would take my mom out for prime rib, her favorite. My sister said she’d have her make a roast beef rare and the best potato latkes you’d ever get. So many times I’d want to call my mom and tell her about someone I had seen. One of my mom’s good friends, whom I admire, rides around town in an electric wheelchair and shows that she’s a survivor and an outstanding mother and grandmother.

I remember one night when we went to the Bayswater Civic meeting and they were giving out awards to those who fought a homeless shelter for 200 men in the Arverne community. I coordinated bus rides to City Hall. We demonstrated and rallied and won our argument. Then the late President of the Bayswater Civic Association Gloria Warshofsky praised and gave awards to

all the elected offi cials who did nothing. She was part of the committee that worked with us to stop the project, Yet she forgot to recognize me. My mother said “What about my son who worked so hard and led the fi ght to stop this?” We were both escorted out by the 101st precinct.

Through the years thick and thin mom was involved with her favorite Hammels (now Seaside) Senior Center on Beach 90th Street. She was also president of the AARP and called bingo and was paymaster for the Yeshiva of Belle Harbor. My mom loved to go around with me to all the community meetings and events. I miss my mom dearly. The pain never goes away. It feels like only yesterday. I love you mom.

We have been working closely with SHAFT at Surfside Houses, 1 Beach 105th Street, 106-20 Shorefront Parkway and 107-10 Shorefront Parkway. Back in October we had a meeting with the owner and manage-ment. They promised to repaint hallways, spruce up the gardens and improve security. We also demanded additional maintenance workers. I requested that Nick Conway meet with us on a Sunday and tour the buildings and work to fi x the problems ASAP. Nick

made an agreement but they have not kept their part of the deal.

Our friends in Surfside are fi ghting for the quality of life we should all enjoy. The going rents for studios are now $1100, one bedroom apartments are $1200 to $1500 and two bedroom apartment are $1800. They have waited for months after an agreement to solve the problems. Now they have decided that they will have to begin a rent strike to get their complaints heard. This is a legal way of putting their rent money aside until they get the repairs and services they need. We need tenants like these to fi ght to keep the kind of community we can all be proud to live in.

We’d like you to friend us on Facebook. We are asking everyone to join us in sup-porting making 9/11 a national holiday to remember those heroes we lost in that hor-rifi c, unwanted attack. We must never forget and always stay vigilant and never let those bastards do it to us again.

The Retired Life by E.Z. Duzzit

One of the nicest Christmas presents we all received last December was when the government extended many of the Bush tax cuts for another two years. Even so, the tax code is a jungle to wade through and don’t assume that you understand all its intricacies. Also, don’t assume that your money manager, even if he knows more than you do, knows it all.

So who does?I’ll give you two names. Ed Slott

(800-663-1340) is one. Jeff Levine (800 894-5122) is another.

You may have seen Ed on the boob tube. He has been a frequent lecturer on PBS advising listeners how to keep your IRA from defaulting into the hands of the tax collector. His offi ce is in Rockville Centre.

As for Jeff, his company, Advanced Wealth Strategies, manages money, and he is an associate of Ed’s.

This is the time of year when we pay attention to taxes because we’re preparing to fi le our tax returns for last year. As we scramble like crazy trying to get all that loose ends tied up, we promise to do a better job this year with record keeping so that we won’t have to scramble next year. Unfortunately, as a rule, we once again tend to fall into the same pattern. After this tax season is over, we lose some of our record keeping ardor, and by the Memorial Day weekend our attention is starting to focus on the upcoming summer. By the Fourth of July, we’re back in the same old rut, and tax planning takes a hike for the rest of the year.

We worked hard to accumulate a nest egg. A couple of phone calls may make a huge difference in determining whether you get to keep from squan-dering it.

Fish ‘N’ FunBy Chet Jakubowski

Whenever you think about going fi sh-ing, do you ever envision yourself being out in a storm? I don’t know about you, but I always think that the sun will be shining, there will be no wind, and the fi sh will be biting like mad. The reason is that, in reality, if the weather is poor, you’ll probably take a rain check on that fi shing trip. That option is yours if you’re fi shing recreationally. However if you’re in the commercial fi shing business, that option hardly ever exists. You ply your trade, summer or winter, rain or shine.

The recent weather we’ve been having is a good time to appreciate what it takes to be a commercial fi sherman. As we complain about yet another snowstorm, think about how that storm affects the men and women whose chosen profession is fi shing. It’s a very diffi cult way to make a living going down to the sea in ships. It’s also very dangerous, ranking right up there in the number of deaths among any profession.

Yet, fi shing is a way of life which attracts many people. And the real profes-sionals look forward to the kind of diffi cult

weather we’ve been having because of the economics of supply and demand. When diffi cult weather conditions exist, the price of the fi sh they catch skyrockets in price.

One fi shing story which illustrates this point was told to me by Pete Snyder, a friend of mine who owned a fi shing boat in Plymouth, Massachusetts, a dragger, the Barbara Jean. The captain of his boat was a guy named Ernie, whose son was part of the crew. One cold and wintry day, his son was getting out of bed and stubbed his foot in the dark, breaking a bone in it. Since there was no way that he could be replaced, he sucked it up and reported for work. It was in the middle of a bitter win-ter, and some of the other boats couldn’t even get out of their berths because they were frozen in. Somehow, the Barbara Jean managed to escape the ice and on the very fi rst drag they hauled up a catch which fetched them six thousand dollars at the auction.

By the way, you don’t have to be a man to be hooked on commercial fi shing. But you do have to be tough.

We look forward to the selection of our Assemblywoman, Audrey Pheffer, as the next Clerk of Queens County. If the Assembly seat becomes vacant, a special election could be held to fi ll the vacancy. I expect to be a candidate if this occurs. You

I was very disappointed last Monday evening when I attended the Bayswater Civic Association meeting with Mayor Bloomberg and his commissioners. No questions were allowed from the general audience. The most important issue on the whole Rockaway peninsula and Broad Channel is the lack of

good transportation. The transportation we have is a disgrace. We should have express buses running 7 days, 18 hours a day. The lousy A train is not reliable. We lost an afford-

able ferry to Manhattan. It’s time the mayor comes and addresses the whole Rockaway community and allows discussion of the issues of importance to everyone.

Firearms Guns have been a part of my life since

as far back as I can remember. My father, an avid hunter, took me on our fi rst hunting trip before I was ten years old. He taught me how to walk in the woods without so much as making a sound, how to hold a rifl e while walking, how to use a safety, how to take a rifl e apart and clean it and how never to point it at anything I don’t intend to shoot. For my tenth birthday, my father gave me a Savage .22/4.10 over and under. He had a half dozen rifl es and shotguns among which were 30.30, 30.06. bolt actions, .22 and a .14 gauge pump action shot gun. We hunted on the property of friends in upstate Gloversville, New York.

My father also had a carry permit for a .38 that he would take from the house to his business. His offi ce was connected to his warehouse where he would often take target practice using the No Smoking sign on the far wall. It was there where I was schooled in the world of hand guns. I knew how to load, unload, to check the chamber for a round, to check the safety, to take it apart for cleaning, to never point it at anything I did not wish to

shoot and to squeeze the trigger like a lemon when shooting off a round. I was so fascinated with guns, I joined the NRA as a teenager where I observed the passion for guns from those who shot at targets outdoors at Fort Wadsworth and indoors at Fort Hamilton. I watched how my mentor would pack his own ammunition. I enjoyed the time I spent in the world of fi re arms only giving guns up when despite ear muffs, my ears rebelled at the noise.

Because of my indoctrination into the world of pistols, rifl es and shotguns, I defi -nitely understand the fascination that some people have with guns. I also understand that fi re arm ownership and passion increase with the distance folks live from cities. I can defi nitely see the need for hand guns for those who are outdoors in rural areas and must defend themselves against snakes and small prey and, in some instances, large animals. I can also understand that gun collecting, for many, is a decent hobby, which can become an obsession. To this end, gun owners in America must be assured that there will never be a time in the future that their second

amendment rights will be abridged. However, they must also confront the fact that there is a problem with hand gun ownership in cities where murder rates are skyrocketing.

Hand gun ownership in today’s American cities begs to be redefi ned. In truth, the only reason a hand gun owner has to own a pistol in a city is to protect himself by harming another human being. How successful are pistol owners in thwarting attacks on them-selves and their loved ones? Google does not even list this data. What is known is the more populated the cities, the more murders with hand guns. Consequently, politicians in offi ce now more than other must take steps to restrict possession of pistols in cities to those responsible citizens who can prove the need for self-protection.

If strict city pistol laws are passed, how can a city enforce those laws? To assure a city is as free of hand guns as possible; police must continue to do gun buy-backs which do get some hand guns off the streets. Canvassing housing projects and enclaves where gun activity is known with metal detectors or portable x-ray machines to fer-ret out illegal fi rearms can be another job of law enforcement and will show the public they are serious. In this Sputnik age of in-novation, detectors must be invented, if they are not already available, to screen vehicles for hand guns on their way in and out of the city. They can be installed overhead on parkways near those EZ pass devices that automatically deduct money from driver’s accounts. Thus, in addition to highway cops looking for speeders, they could be identifying and dealing with drivers of cars containing guns. If municipalities pass laws outlawing illegal handguns, then the police

must get inventive in getting as many guns off the streets as possible.

What should the future of hand guns be in America? To the best of our ability as a nation, we must try to get hand guns registered on the state level as we have been told in uncertain terms that Congress on the federal level will never buck the NRA. Canada has a federal law wherein all hand gun purchases must include a substantial waiting period of one month allowing for a thorough background check and; a letter from his or her spouse giving the applicant permission for the acquisition. In addition to adopting Canada’s gun laws, states must consider limiting the ammunition for hand-guns to six rounds a clip or prove there is a need for more. Those who sell and purchase guns at gun shows must be subject to the same laws that apply to stores where guns are for sale. Cities wishing to place further restrictions and hand gun ownership must pass their own laws to do so.

Gun devotees must know that second amendment rights did and do apply to all qualifi ed Americans. However, in light of the tragedy in Phoenix laws must be enacted to keep guns out of the hands of people with questionable mental stability. To do nothing is to ignore a golden opportunity to effect change. Gun devotees can rest assured that nobody will be taking their guns or preventing them from adding to their collections. What our country must do, however, is to try its best to restrict hand gun ownership in cities, limit the size of clips that turn a shooter into a shooting machine and prevent fi rearms from getting into the hands of troubled people. When should this be done?

Yesterday!

Sunday – 23 January The Sermon on the Mount

contains some of the most-quoted passages from the Bible. Jesus often spoke clearly and directly about what was required to enter the Kingdom of Heaven and the kind of life one must lead to do so. Though the Beatitudes are often characterized as directive, the terms used in our translations are not. Rather, they are declarative; meaning, ‘this is how it is.’

The sermon also contains the Lord’s Prayer and the injunctions to “resist evil” (5:39) and “turn the other cheek”, as well as a version of the Golden Rule. Other lines often quoted are the references to “salt of the earth”, “light of the world” and “judge not, lest ye be judged.”

The Beatitudes are simply stat-

ed, and profound in meaning. They guide. They point. They teach. They demonstrate what Jesus thought needed to be emphasized at this stage of the development of his disciples. These values if followed, can not only bring a believer into a state of peace and happiness, but also right into the Kingdom of God, right here, right now.

The Latin root is beatus: blessed, fortunate. In a slight ‘play on words’, these are ‘attitudes to be’

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall possess the earth.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall be satisfied.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Blessed are they who suffer persecution for justice sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Mat 5:1-12]

Notice that there are two types of statements: ‘being’ statements; as in “... are the ... “, and ‘doing’ statements, as in “... they who ...

“. This parallels the many places in the New Testament where the issue of emphasis on faith or behavior is raised. If you assert your faith but your behaviors contradict that assertion, you will not be believed. When you ‘walk in the light’ your behavior will reveal it. Or not, if that is the case.

Lets consider one example, learned

from Scott Peck. Our Bibles generally come to us from translations from the Greek and Hebrew. But Jesus is likely to have spoken a dialect of Aramaic, a Northwest Semitic language which replaced Hebrew as the language of the Jews. In that language, ‘poor in spirit’ translates to ‘confused’. So,

Mary Ellen AnsteyBorn in New York City on Dec. 8,

1922Departed on Jan. 27, 2011 and re-

sided in Garden City, New YorkAnstey, Mary E. Resident for the past

3 ½ years of Garden City, New York, and longtime resident of Breezy Point, New York. Loving mother of daughter of Suzanne Keenan. Daughter of the late John and Estelle Lynch and brother of Hugh Lynch. Loving grandmother of Christopher and Matthew Keenan, and mother in law of Michael Keenan, all of Garden City New York.

Mary lived a full and interesting life. She graduated from St. Savior’s high school in Brooklyn and then at-tended Katherine Gibbs in New York City where she received a secretarial degree. She worked for some years for Rockwell International in Brooklyn, as an executive secretary. She married Harry Anstey in 1946. They had met in Breezy Point, where both families had summer beach homes. They were both good dancers, and were known for taking the whole fl oor with their Pea-body. Harry graduated from Fordham University and then went on to receive his MBA from Harvard University after completing his military service as an army Captain in World War ll, having served in the liberation of Berlin.

Mary then went to Aibointo, Puerto Rico with Harry, in the early 1950s, where Harry was managing a garment company as part of Operation Boot-strap, (an economic revival program

for Puerto Rico). She lived there for about 4 years. While in Puerto Rico, Mary learned to speak Spanish from a teacher named Martera Martinez, whom she kept in touch with and exchanged Christmas gifts with for her entire life. Martera is still living in Aibonito.

Mary and Harry returned to New York and soon after Suzanne was born. They settled in Bay Ridge Brooklyn. They later moved to Lansing, Michigan, then on to Wolcott CT, and Waterbury, CT. In the 1960s, they moved back to Brooklyn and summered in Breezy Point, where they later became perma-nent residents. In the 1960s, Harry set up his own Security Company in New York City and Mary helped with the correspondence and billing.

After Harry died in 1980, Mary was a distraught widow, but later took on new interests such as golf, at Breezy Point, and traveling, with her family and grandsons, and also with her daugh-ter’s mother- in –law, Eleanor Keenan. Mary and Eleanor became known as the “traveling grandmas”. Together they visited many destinations includ-ing: such places as Germany, England, Ireland, Alaska, Japan, China, Greece, Turkey, Nashville, and many others. Mary was a lover of words, language, card games, especially Bridge, books and new adventures and experiences. She was often described as feisty, and a real “character”. She will be greatly missed by all who new her.

Jesus actually said, “Blessed are the confused, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Now, why would he say that? The possibility becomes much easier to understand when considering that most of the pain and suffering in this world has occurred and is occurring due to people who were or are absolutely cer-tain they knew what they were doing. Consider Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Mugabi, bin Laden, Tojo, Castro, Chavez.

Being ‘certain’ about anything suggests a ‘closed mind’ that thinks it knows everything about the ques-tions at hand, has no need to listen to others or other points of view, or even to seek more data. Being ‘con-fused’ implies an open and searching mind about apparently opposing or contrary arguments, conditions of paradox, or simply awareness of not knowing everything about a subject, Those who are ‘confused’ tend to ask lots of questions to understand better while those who think they are not confused will generally tell lots of answers before they even know all the questions. Being ‘con-fused’ in this sense is definitely not the dramatic state of cleverly acting confused in order to manipulate or deceive others.

A confused and searching mind

Christ Community Church(Continued from Page 16)

is not lazy, does not shy away from challenging or even painful oppor-tunities to learn something new, remains faithful to essential first principles even while investigating new information, does the difficult work of verifying the validity of new information before accepting it at face value. Most important, a confused and searching mind is aware of, as in, awake to, it’s own mindsets and is prepared to chal-lenge and change those beliefs and values that are proven incorrect in the light of revealed ‘valid’ data. - the process called ‘learning’. The essential first principles, which are known truth, don’t change, the mindset of a human being, with its limited experience and capacity, must be malleable to change.

This has been a shallow and brief consideration of only one of the lessons Jesus taught that day. Isn’t it likely that each of His statements has a great depth of meaning beyond our immediate interpretation? Its time to go to work again; with Bible, diction-aries, internet search tools, and an open, confused, and searching mind to learn what God offers us. What you think about is what you become; molding your attitudes, values and judgments.

Imperfect Man(Continued from Page 12)found myself back in the kitchen bitching and making them breakfast.

To further annoy me, shortly after, my daughter handed me a barely-eaten plate of eggs. “I wasn’t that hungry.”

My kids may not appreciate me but at least I had my iPad.

I decided to check my email. Maybe there’d be something uplifting there, such as an old friend fi nding me on Facebook.

Free Viagra. Delete.Wow, I’ve just won the lottery in some

Sexy Senior singles in your area. (I’m not making this up.) I’ve been matched with a sweet single senior. Lucky me. Delete.

Now I was really depressed.

“Hon, can you shovel the car out?” my wife asked

I looked at the piles of snow outside and almost cried.

CJ then ran over and hugged me. “I loved your eggs, Dad.”

I was on top of the world again. Briefl y.

“Hon, are you going outside? That car is not going to shovel itself out.”

Snooze and Looze Weight !Sleeping eight hours a night is one of the best kept secrets of dieting success.

Yes, according to research, simply sleeping eight hours or more every night will help your burn more calories, and you will lose weight. Short duration sleepers have higher levels of “ghrelin” in their systems, a hormone that induces hunger. So by sleeping less you tend to be more hungry, and you’re awake more hours which allows you to eat more and gain weight. So why not get to bed a little earlier, or sleep a little later when you can.

Enjoy more sleep. Rest to feel your best, and snooze to lose weight.Bob Melli

Best way to drop 5 lbs is with 100 calorie snacks. This according to Good house Keeping’s nutritionist, Samantha Cassidy.

When you get hungry between meals these three snacks will keep you on track. Enjoy them 3 to 5 times daily.

1. strawberries, 2. apple slices with peanut butter, 3. cheese and crackers

Johnny Cakes

The Johnny Cakes’ 2011 New Year’s Resolutions:

We resolve to stop writing Letters to the Editor in The Pointer, unless some harmless comment is made by a fellow Pointer that we can’t resist overreacting to in every other issue of The Pointer

We will stop carelessly beating the Huggy Bears, unless it’s Sunday morn-ing, it’s over 80 degrees, our cooler’s full and we are wearing purple

We will toe the line on every Walk League rule, real or a fi gment of Mr. McLaughlin’s imagination, unless Jimmy O’Meara is wearing sunscreen when we are supposed to be toeing said line.

We will do everything in mod-eration, limiting our softball related drinking to one day a week unless it’s All-Star Saturday night.

We will diversify our musical reper-toire beyond Classic Rock to broaden its appeal to our female, older and younger fans, but will stop short of disco, rap, drum machines, Big Band, swing, jazz, country or synthesizers (unless Pete Townsend is playing them).

We will not let things like Frozen Drink Sunday or Rockaway Birthday Extravaganza trips distract us from our core mission of playing fundamental softball, unless it’s someone’s birthday and/or the frozen drinks are cold.

We will not fi ll our articles with inside jokes that not even some of our

Leading the League in Tardy New Year’s Resolutions!own team gets unless it tickles the fancy of the co-authors (yours trulyies).

We will not add someone under 40 to our roster now that everyone is over 40 just to be unnecessarily controversial unless Jamaica is getting all the negative press we so enjoy.

We will not treat the end of year party at the Pt. Breeze Firehouse as our opportunity to be members for the day and way overstay our welcome unless the AC is pumping, the cooler is not empty and the rest of the League has left.

We will proceed to the Sugar Bowl beach in reasonable time after game’s end, unless ...

We will let the other team recruit a new player or two unless they’re funny, can drink or are related to a current Cake (that should free up .009 of the eligible males on the peninsula).

We will be honest with our signifi -cant others at least fi fty percent of the time. After all you’ve got to keep them guessing. To quote an anonymous Cake, marriage is a chess match and my wife is Bobby Fisher.

We will listen to all your complaints and or grievances before dismissing them.

Remember, Sunday is Funday, though this one would have been a lot more fun with the Jets in the Super Bowl!

Paulie Walnuts.
