Real Estate Broker Shatters Glass Ceilings Real estate professional, devoted teacher and member of First Baptist Church of Woodstock, and loving wife, mother and grandmother, Sally O. Washburn of Woodstock, GA, passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta.
Born September 21, 1918 in Birmingham, AL, Sally was the beloved daughter of the late Baldwin F. and Sarah Maude Ogletree. She had one brother B.F. Ogletree, Jr. (deceased) and four sisters, Mary Lousie McConnell of Mobile, AL, Sybil O. Sharpton (deceased), Colleen O. Childress of Sharpsburg, GA and Marguerite O. McCallahan (deceased). Sally came from a very loving family and she had a very happy childhood despite the difficulties of the depression and later WWII.
Sally married Thomas L. Washburn, Jr. (deceased) on December 3, 1937. Their great love for each other weathered many challenges. They were the parents of Thomas L. Washburn, III (deceased) and Sally W. Hamby of Woodstock, GA. The birth of her daughter after losing a baby marked a signifi-cant turning point in Sally’s relationship with her Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Her business career began in 1937 in the accounts payable department with Birmingham Electric Company. She continued in the accounting field until 1959, including working during World War II at Bechtel-McCone Company, later with the regional office of the Army and Air Force Exchange Service. Sally earned her real estate license in 1960 and became a member of the Atlanta Board of Realtors. She and her husband opened Washburn Realty on the Southside of Atlanta in 1964. Washburn Realty served all of the Atlanta metro area south of I-20 from Douglasville to Newnan and the company grew to become one of the largest and most reputable real estate agencies in Atlanta.
Sally entered real estate at a time when professional opportunities for women were limited. She was born two years before women were allowed to vote in the United States. She worked in the accounting field prior to earning her real estate license. Through the real estate profession, Sally found a lifelong passion as well as a career opportunity without limitations. Sally was the first woman elected to the Board of Directors of the Atlanta Board of Realtors and in 1976 Sally became the first woman president of the Atlanta Board of Realtors.
Following the death of her husband in 1971, Sally sold Washburn Realty in 1976. She later joined Northside Realty and in less than three years at-tained Life Member of the Million Dollar Club of the Atlanta Board of Realtors. In 1981, she was named Vice-President of Northside Realty and Manag-ing Broker of the North Springs office. In 1995, her responsibilities expanded as her office joined with the Sandy Springs office. In 1998 Sally helped to launch and direct a highly successful Coaching and Mentoring program for new sales associates. She directed that program until Northside Realty was purchased by Coldwell Banker. Sally earned the designations: Certified Residential Broker (CRB), Graduate Realtors Institute (GRI), Leadership Train-ing Graduate (LTG) Life member of the Million Dollar Club Atlanta Board and Performance Management Network (PMN).
Most recently an associated broker with Keller Williams Realty Atlanta Perimeter, Sally was Chairman of the Historical Committee for the Atlanta Board of Realtors and very active in preparing for the Board’s centennial celebration in 2010. In 2007, she and her granddaughter, Kristi Washburn Rapson, founded The Sally Washburn Team. She continued to list and sell properties until the time of her death from ALS.
Sally’s professional honors and recognitions include 15 years on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Association of Realtors, president of Atlanta Chapter of Women’s Council of Realtors, president of the Georgia Chapter of Women’s Council of Realtors, Dean of the Georgia Institute of Realtors, two terms as Governor of the Georgia Chapter of Women’s Council of Realtors, Regional Vice President, Region 5 - National Chapter of Women’s Council of Realtors, Secretary of Computer Multi-List DeKalb Board of Realtors, Director of Computer Multi-List, DeKalb Board of Realtors. In the early 70s Sally was the only woman appointed by Gov. Jimmy Carter to a Blue Ribbon Committee to investigate Real Estate Practices. She led the way to drafting fundamental changes for the license law and the creation of the office of the Real Estate Commissioner as a full time employee of the Com-mission. Among her many accolades and honors, she received the E.A. Isakson Lifetime Commitment Award in 1976.
Her career has been a combination of service to the public as well as the real estate industry. Sally has many years of leadership and participation in organizations including the service organization Quota International, the non-profit education organization Freedoms Foundation of Valley Forge, Inter-national information center volunteer for Atlanta’s Olympic Games and she has served in positions of leadership with her church’s financial team and has been a Sunday School teacher for more than 60 years.
She was recently honored by the establishment of the Sally O. Washburn Lifetime Achievement Award by the ABR. The award was created for the purpose of recognizing an Atlanta Board member in good standing, who has demonstrated excellence through a minimum of twenty (20) years of active participation and service to the Board of Realtors, its members, and the real estate industry. Although she has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout her career, Sally felt that by far the most meaningful legacy of her career was not the awards or accolades but the success and career longevity of the agents she trained as a broker, mentor and coach.
Sally recently said, ―The purpose of my life is that the Lord Jesus Christ shall have the priority in everything, that I will respond positively to the Lord’s workmanship in my life, that his character may be developed in me and demonstrated through me to my family, my church, my work, and to everyone I meet.‖
Sally is survived by her daughter, Sally W. Hamby, two sisters, Mary Louise McConnell of Mobile, AL and Colleen Childress of Sharpsburg, GA, daugh-ters-in-law Susan Gunther Washburn, Jacksonville, FL, Marie Carter Washburn, Peachtree City, GA, grandchildren Scott (Sandy) Washburn, Melbourne, FL, Deborah (Jeff) Heard, Fayetteville, GA, Kristi (Steven) Rapson, Peachtree City, GA, Thomas (Shanon) Washburn, Milton, FL, and Melissa (Ronnie) Tatum, Marietta, GA. She has two step-grandsons, nine great-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, one step-great-great grandson, one step-great-great-granddaughter, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be Friday, June 19 at Northside Chapel,12050 Crabapple Road, Roswell, 30075 from 2-4 p.m. and again from 6-8 p.m. The service will be Saturday, June 20 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dan Dorner officiating at First Baptist Church of Woodstock, 11905 Highway 92, Woodstock, 30188. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. prior to the service. A separate graveside service will be at 3 p.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Garden, 5755 Mallory Road, College Park.. In lieu of flowers, those who desire may make memorial donations to Georgia Chapter of ALS, 1955 Cliff Valley Way, Suite 116, Atlanta, GA 30329, [email protected].

Health Care Reform in Congress
As summer approaches, health care reform is emerging as the next major legislative debate in Congress. With nearly one-third of REALTORS® lacking ANY health insurance and hundreds of thousands more struggling to pay ever increasing premiums, health reform is an issue of critical importance to our membership. In the coming weeks NAR will be fully engaged in the health care debate and we wanted to outline some of the steps will be taking to ensure we remain an important stakeholder in the health care debate. Our Federal Political Coordinators will receive a notice in the FPC weekly Report that will be delivered on June 12th. The FPCs will be an important component of our legislative strategy and we want each FPC to understand the issues as fully as possible. Later this week you will receive an invitation to a staff briefing to be held on June 18, 2009 via WebEx. To accommodate all time zones we will conduct one briefing at 10:00 AM Eastern and a second briefing at 3:00 PM Eastern. An all member email will be launched June 16th to promote a Health Care Podcast from NAR President Charles McMillan. Members will be asked to send questions related to health care to NAR. We will share the questions and answers with you on the WebEx brief-ings. Additional resources will be posted on REALTOR.ORG/healthcare on Monday June 15th. Updates on the health care debate will be a key message in presentations and speeches by NAR’s Leadership Team and Regional Vice-Presidents. Regional Vice-Presidents and Federal Political Coordinators will have a special WebEx briefing on June 23rd. As this debate intensifies in Washington, DC and across the nation, NAR will be protecting the interests of our members. Working with our state and local association partners is essential to achieving our goal of creating access to affordable health coverage for the self-employed, independent contractors and small businesses.
