Dwayne and Sandra Cakerice will be celebrating their 60th Anniversary on June 17. Sandra (Amundson) and Dwayne Cakerice were married June 17, 1956 at the Whitten Methodist Church. Celebrate with the family by sending cards to them for their 60th Anniversary. You can send cards to Dwayne and Sandra at 2805 Northridge Parkway #101, Ames, IA 50010.

Dwayne and Sandra Cakerice 60th Anniversary

The Tuesday primary here in Iowa and in Hardin County decided some questions with national implications, but on the whole the contests were few and far between lo-cally. Probably of most inter-est to followers of politics, would be the breakdown of the votes across the vari-ous precincts in he county. The charts to the immediate right look to the local voting. There was not a race among them. William Hoffman will be squaring off aginst in-cumbent Democrate Ronn Rickels in November for a supervisor seat. Meanwhile, incumbent auditor Jessica Lara and Sheriff Dave Mc-Daniel face no opposition in the general vote. Veteran Iowa candidate Patty Judge will vye with long time Sena-tor Charles BGrassley for his Senate seat and Steve King will meet challenger Kim Weaver in the general election. At the statehouse, Pat Grassley will face Doris Fritz and Dave Deyoe runs for his house seat unop-posed.

computers? There are groups of people in

the area that are planning for just that contingency. Iowa Wireless Amateur Radio Network (IWARN) is a group of amateur radio operators or “hams” from Butler, Franklin, Hardin, Grundy, Marshall and Tama Counties (http://www.iowawarn.net/). The group meets the first Thursday of the month at the Grundy Center Hospital to plan for emergency communications and to talk to people with the same hobby. We come for all walks of life and have different skills to bring to the group.

Ham radio is a hobby to many people all over the world. In 1912, the United States government started licensing individuals to use select radio waves for communication. There are three levels of license, which allow hams to communicate at different radio frequencies called technician, general and extra. To use a ham radio frequency in the United States, the FCC must license you. If you are interested in getting a license you can talk with the members of the group or visit www.arrl.org for more information.

Every summer, the Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) holds it’s Field Day the fourth weekend in June. Field Day is the annual “shakedown run” for the ARRL’s National Field Organization to test and improve amateur-

radio operator’s emergency communication skills and portable amateur radio stations. Users set up a portable ham radio operation and attempt to make contact with as many other stations as possible in a 24-hour period.

This year, field day will be from 1pm June 25th until 1 p.m. on June 26th. The public is invited to visit the site at Prairie Bridges Park in Ackley from 1-4 p.m. on June 25th. During this time, there will be stations on the air transmitting to other people all over the world, an information table with lots of great information about radio and even a kid’s activity for them to learn more about Morse Code.

If you’d like to know more contact Jennifer Strohbehn, at [email protected].

fair coming up. If you are arranging your calendar, the parade July 6 starts at 6 p.m. The news from the Eldora Youth Sports summer schedule was on the city website, as was news of the Hardin County Senior Information Fair held this week. The Library in Eldora always has a long list of events coming up, most but not all for the kids. If you checked he website over the last few weeks, you’d have know about Jonathan May the magician, comedian Desiree Payne, you’d have heard about a presentation by the local fire department, a bicycle rodeo set up by the city police for

later this summer, and a lot more. The city helps promote a lot of good causes on its site, and what with Relay For Life this week it focused on one particularly noteworthy team of walkers who were raising money for the cancer crusade. The city put the word out on the annual 50 year class reunion of Eldora high school graduates and will even help promote events going on in communities elsewhere in the county, This week Conrad, Wellsburg and New Providence shared the bill. The city said an official hello and welcome to new elementary school principal Annie Bradford. And if you are in the market for real estate, this week the city has a

deal for you, a long list of surplus properties it would like to dispose of. Greenbelt Home Care public health nurse offering are regular fare. And then there is the cataloged of basic city services, minutes of boards and councils, even long term plans for community improvements. So check eldoraiowa.com to find out what is going on in town. They can’t tell you everything but they can tell you a lot.

movies open to the public as well as patrons of the park campgrounds.

For several summers now, the Friends group has hosted outdoor movies for the community in the state park campgrounds. If you want to attend all they wish is that you bring your own blanket or lawn chair and your own snacks. The movies will be friendly to all ages and if you want to see the schedule, check the Friends Face book page at Facebook.com/Friends of Pine Lake State Park.

Movies are on Saturday nights. The Friends of Pine Lake are

well underway with their 2016 summertime activities.

In conjunction with the Pine Lake Festival July 29-31, the Friends’ will host the Pine Lake 5K Trail Run. Registration is now open and forms are available on the group’s Face book page. The race will begin at 8:30 a.m. on July 30 at the park’s beach house and run a course

that includes paved and unpaved trails. As in the past, the top male and female runners in each of the six age groups will receive an award as well as the overall top finishers. Last year the Friends initiated an overhaul of the trail leading from the beach parking area to the beach. Working with the DNR’s trail crew the portion of the trail east of the tunnel to the beach was repaired and updated. This year the west portion of the trial from the tunnel to the parking lot will be updated. Friends sponsors who help make the projects possible include: American Family Insurance, Pine Lake Produce, Dean Stickrod DDS, All Around Travel, Eldora Iowa Realty, Whink Services, Whink Products, Clemons Hardware, Hardin County Savings Bank, Plastic Recycling of Iowa Falls, Eldora Plumbing and Heating, Great Western Bank, Eldora Tire, Green Belt Bank and Trust, Fidelity Abstract, Thrivent Financial, Vision Health Center, Salvo’s Fitness,

Eldora Family Chiropractic and Wellness Center, Napa Auto Parts – Eldora, LaVelle Lawn Care, HyVee, Fareway, Hardin County Community Endowment Foundation, and Barlow Family Foundation.

The Friends of Pine Lake is a volunteer 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing Pine Lake State Park. The group welcomes new members.

emigrated from JamaicaFootball soon captured his

imagination, and he told students at the training school that football molded many of the habits and attitudes he now spreads to others – he appreciated the opportunity to play and the wealth it gave him – but he said football proved to not be enough all alone. McDonald said a turning point came when he turned to his Christian faith, at precisely a time success was full, but had begun to feel hollow. His work today is still about inspiration, inspiration very much like that which he said several coaches and others imparted to him as he progressed in football all the way up to the NFS. The one time NFL linebacker encouraged his audience to bring a similar discipline to their own life choices. McDonald told listeners discipline served him in his early years as he dealt with chronic problems with

stuttering. He credits a focus on improving

his reading skills as a tonic for the speech problem, and credits it for enriching the message he now brings to people.

Sports World engages a wide range of sports celebrities whose post career job is to “You are not born a winner. You are not born a looser. You are born a chooser.”

McDonald said perhaps the most important advice he could impart was for his listeners to: “Always be willing to ask people for help.

“This is a world full of people.

You have to work with them. If you are going to get anywhere.”

McDonald said he found what he was looking for in life, in his marriage and family. His post football life is giving him “ a whole new career giving others what was given me: hope.”Chad Fincham is the assigned chaplain at the State Training School and helped facilitate McDonald’s visit there, and Fincham’s boss Derek Jacobsen with the Youth For Christ organization was on hand for the presentation too.

LEGRAND- Bookend three-run at bats lifted the BCLUW softball team to an exciting 6-5 victory over East Marshall during North Iowa Cedar League West Conference ac-tion here Tuesday. The Comets scored three runs in the first inning and then another three in the seventh to complete the home-and-away sweep of the rival Mustangs. BCLUW won earlier 6-3 in Conrad. Olivia Callaway delivered the big hit – a two-run single to centerfield in the seventh for BCLUW’s final two runs. Doubles by Callaway and Leah Yantis fueled the winner’s first inning. The Comets were outhit 10-5 as singles by Kate Goecke and Nicole Lutes rounded out the hit list. “We played great defense and got good pitching. Anytime you can get a win at East Marshall it is a big win,” said BCLUW coach David Lee. Samantha Ubben in relief picked up the pitching win as she worked the sixth and seventh after Callaway went the first five. The pair struck out nine and walked two with seven strikeouts for Callaway. East Marshall answered BCLUW’s three run first with two, tied the game with one in the fifth, took the lead with one in the sixth and fell just short with one in the seventh. Offensive leaders for the Mustangs were Bobbi Amendt a solo home run and double, and Maria Rasmusson three singles. The loss was a fifth straight for 6-7 EM. A strong showing in the pitcher’s circle by Callaway and Ubben car-ried the Comets to a 3-0 win over Gladbrook-Reinbeck at Gladbrook Monday in a conference contest. Callaway gained the win, check-ing the hosts to three base hits in five innings and struck out six, while Ub-

ben fanned in five in the sixth and seventh. BCLUW scored the one and only run needed in the first and tacked on two insurance tallies in the third. Callaway’s double and single led the winner’s seven hits with a double for Yantis, two singles for Ubben and one base knock for Jordyn Beeghly and Easton Swanson. Courtesy run-ner Jenna Willett scored twice. An eight strikeout, two walk effort was given by losing hurler Madison White. The back-to-back wins improved the Comets to 4-1 in the NICL West and 9-4 overall. BCLUW hosts the David Lee Classic today (Friday) and Saturday in Conrad and then plays Grundy Center in Conrad Monday. REINBECK- A marathon 19-in-nings of baseball earned BCLUW and Gladbrook-Reinbeck a split of North Iowa Cedar League West Conference contests here Monday. The host Rebels won 5-4 in a 10-inning first game and in the nightcap, the Comets captured a nine-inning 8-5 victory. Knotted four-all after the regu-lation seven in the second game, BCLUW scored four times in the ninth. Ted Switzer started the at bat with the only base hit – a single, fol-lowed by Austin Willett and Clay Silver both hit by pitches to load the bases. A fielding error scored one run, a squeeze bunt the second and two more raced home on wild pitch-es. Switzer collected three of the Comets’ seven singles with two for Troy Dolphin and one for Willett and Brad Barkema. Josh Sharp worked all nine in-nings on the mound for the win. The senior allowed 11 base hits, struck out nine and walked none. “Josh was very efficient and the defense shaped up when we needed it in the second game,” said BCLUW coach Matt Zoske. Matt Roeding, the third G-R hurl-er, took the loss as the threesome struck out six, walked six and hit three. Zoske added, “The guys were pretty down after the first game, but

they kept battling and got the split.” Errors were costly to the Comets in the first game as G-R’s first four runs were unearned – including one in the bottom of the seventh inning with two-outs. BCLUW finished with eight errors. Barkema stroked two singles for the visitors with one each for Sharp, Dolphin, Switzer, Willett and Logan Mann. The Comets tallied two runs in the seventh for a 4-3 lead as Dolphin singled, L. Mann walked, Switzer’s ground-out scored Dolphin and Wil-lett’s single plated L. Mann. Both team’s wasted golden scoring opportunities in the eighth. BCLUW had runners on second and third with no-outs and failed to score, while G-R packed the paths with no- outs and also didn’t score. Barkema in relief of Blake Mann in the eighth suffered the pitching loss, while Tyler Tscherter, the third G-R thrower in the ninth, gained the win.

BELLE PLAINE- The BCLUW baseball team dropped an 11-4 deci-sion to Belle Plaine Tuesday. The host Plainsman built an early 4-0 lead and after the Comets closed the gap to one, Belle Plaine erupted for six in the fifth. The gloves strug-gled for BCLUW as just one of the 11 runs were earned. Blake Mann led the Comets’ of-fense with three singles and two runs batted in. Troy Dolphin and Brad Barkema had a double and single each and Josh Sharp two singles. On

the mound, Logan Mann and Austin Willett combined to strikeout seven and walk eight. BCLUW, 6-4 overall, plays two with Grundy Center in Beaman Monday. ACKLEY- One game went down to the wire and the other did not. The South Hardin and AGWSR baseball teams divided a North Iowa Cedar League West Conference dou-bleheader here Monday. The Cougars tallied two runs in the host’s half of the seventh to claim the opener 8-7, while the Ti-gers opened the second game with a 10-run first and were a 14-4 winner. In the first game, AGWSR an-swered a two-run seventh inning by South Hardin to take a 7-6 lead with two in the bottom of the at bat. Tra-vis Haupt ignited the host’s come-back reaching base on an error and took third on Michael Young’s dou-ble down the leftfield line. After an intentional walk to Tate Hofmeister to pack the paths, Matt Pfaltzgraff drew a base-on-balls forcing home Haupt and then Nathan Karsjens lofted a sacrifice fly to rightfield to scoring courtesy runner Luke Starr with the game winner. “I had a good feeling going into that last at bat and the guys came through,” noted AGWSR coach Dar-win Pfaltzgraff. Down 6-4, the Tigers pulled with-in one on Dane Butler’s run-scoring single in the sixth, and regained the lead in the seventh. Alex Gustafson

ELDORA- The South Hardin softball team went from winless to a hop in their step and smiles on their faces after sweeping a day-night doubleheader here Tuesday. The Tigers’ season-long losing skid ended with a 14-5 matinee vic-tory over Aplington-Parkersburg and followed that with a 7-3 win over South Tama under the lights. “This was good for the girls and much needed,” stated South Hardin interim head coach Ben Nelson. “The team has been through so much lately and to get into the win column feels good. We still have work to do, but the girls toughened up and competed today,” he added. Both Aplington-Parkersburg and South Tama entered Tuesday with one-win to their credit. A six-run first inning fueled South Hardin against Aplington-Parkers-burg. The hosts combined singles by Jenny Allen and Kiera Anderson with four A-P errors and two hit bat-ters. Michael Friest took a bases-loaded hit-by-a-pitch, Laura Camp-bell and Miquela Teske each drove home a run while reaching base on an error, and Anderson’s base knock was good for two runs batted in. The Falcons battled back to 6-3, before the Tigers pulled away two runs in the fourth and sixth after a four-run fifth. Highlights were a Teske triple and singles by Hannah Tripp and Rachel Mildenhall in the fourth; a two-run single for Milden-hall in the fifth, and Friest singled in the sixth and scored on a double-steal. South Hardin sophomore Holly Talbot benefitted for the offensive outburst to gain her first varsity pitching win. She scattered seven base hits, struck seven, walked one and hit one. In the loss, A-P’s Hailey DeVries struck out one, walked two and hit six. For A-P, Maddie Waller stroked a triple and single, Canon DeGroote

started the seventh with a double fol-lowed by Layne Nelson and Ty Cook bunt singles. Aaron Nederhoff’s sui-cide squeeze bunt plated courtesy runner Tanner Lawrence and Hunter Edgerton was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded and two-outs, forcing home Nelson. South Hardin led 4-2 after a two-run fourth when Edgerton had a run-scoring single and Butler was hit with the bases loaded. AGWSR followed that with a four-spot as Caleb Bartling lined a two-run single, Young doubled off the fence in rightfield to score one and Hofmeister reached base on an error, scoring one. “We didn’t take advantage offen-sively in that first game. We had op-portunities to score runs and didn’t. And we didn’t play real sharp de-fense,” South Hardin coach Dick Shindelar said. Cook worked all seven innings and took the tough pitching loss as he fanned four and walked two. Jer Stull, who registered the third out in the seventh in relief of T. Pfaltzgraff, gain the mound win. “We can’t continue to put the lead-off runner on base. That was proba-bly the biggest thing tonight,” added Pfaltzgraff. The Tigers’ lead-off batter reached base in four innings – twice with

walks, one hit batter and one single - and all four times scored. South Hardin quickly erased the late inning loss and came to play in the second game, scoring 10 runs in the top half of the first inning. The victory snapped a five-game losing skid to stand 2-5 in the league and overall. The Tigers’ first inning scoring spree that featured 15 batters had two-run doubles by Gustafson and Kevin Rewoldt, run-scoring singles for Edgerton and Butler, and five base-on-balls. Edgerton, who scored twice in the first frame, also scored in the third and fourth after coaxing walks. “I was glad to see the guys come back; I didn’t know how things would go after that first game. We came up with some big hits in that first inning,” said Shindelar. Butler stroked three singles to lead the Tigers with two doubles for Gus-tafson, Rewoldt with the two-bag-ger and singles for Edgerton, Cade Spieker, Colton Haley and Neder-hoff. After the Cougars scored once in the first frame and three in the sec-ond to pull within 10-4, the Tigers tallied two in the third and fourth to win by the 10-run ruling in five. Butler tossed a two-hitter in the pitching win as he worked around

seven walks and struck out four. Liam Stubbe, the first of three AG-WSR hurlers, suffered the setback. The trio struck out eight and walked 11 with seven eventually scoring. “Walks hurt us. We just had a hard time finding the zone,” Pfaltzgraff noted. Karsjens and T. Pfaltzgraff singled for the hosts in the second game. The split left the Cougars 2-4 in the league and 2-5 overall with all seven games at home. South Hardin battles Gladbrook-Reinbeck Monday and plays Colo-NESCO Tuesday in Zearing. scored two runs and Jenna Bruns had two runs batted in. The Tigers again grabbed the lead early against South Tama, hitting home plate three times in the first inning. The hosts stretched the ad-vantage to 5-1 after fourth and both teams tallied two runs in the fifth to finish the scoring. Campbell, Laura Stanish and Cora Spainhower collected two singles each for South Hardin with a triple for Teske, double for Allen and sin-gle for Friest. In the first, Teske opened the at bat with a base-on-balls and sprinted home on Allen’s double followed by RBI singles for Spainhower and Friest. Teske clubbed a run-scoring three-bagger in the fourth, scor-ing Campbell, who had singled and scored on a wild pitch, and in the fifth, Stanish and Campbell deliv-ered two-run run-scoring singles. Teske struck out two and walked four in the pitching win with the loss to Brittney Breya, who struck out and walked three each. The visiting Trojans had scoring opportunities, stranding 10 base run-ners, including seven in scoring po-sition. South Hardin, who now stands 2-8, plays in a tournament at Newton Saturday. Jimmerson hustled home on a wild pitch and Hunt scored the eventual winning run on Alana Groninga’s double to left-centerfield. G-R attempted a comeback in the host’s half of the seventh as an error and two-bagger by Marissa Berends generated a run with two-outs. The tying run was stranded at second as the game ended with a ground-out to second. “Every game matters when it comes to a conference title. Anyone can be beaten on a given night. We need to come with focus and inten-

sity every game,” stated AGWSR co-head coach Brenda Drake. The victory improved the Cougars to a league-leading 5-0 and 8-1 over-all, and completed the season sweep of G-R, winning earlier 7-1 in Ack-ley. AGWSR broke a scoreless game in the fourth when Ali Gerbracht sin-gled to leftfield, dashed to third on Anna Jaspers bunt single and scored on Taryan Barrick’s single.
