I AM NOT a gambler. It seems a difficult occupation; so few are successful.

Having said that, I concede it is difficult to explain to an outsider, looking in at our industry, that we are not all gamblers. We must cope with constant fickleness: weather, markets, bureaucratic meddling — the outsider has a point.

Well then, call me a risk-assessor; I’m not a gambler.

But, I’ve heard of the famous racehorse Winx and wondered if there is a breeding lesson to be gained there. Her sire (a quick internet search tells us) has appeared high up on the Australian Sires Table for several years. He rocketed to the top of the ‘earnings’ scale for a short time when Winx

came on the scene and started generating more prizemoney than all his other progeny combined.

A breeder’s dream come true, Winx; almost like McDonalds promoting your breed on their menu.

But I doubt Australia’s stallion owners are collectively holding their breath waiting to breed their own Winx. Commonsense would dictate they focus more on percentages. There are other stallions consistently higher on the earnings scale than Winx’s sire, generating more in prizemoney, spread across many more winners.

Any cattle breeder whose life is incomplete without a Winx-equivalent in their sire battery only needs to go to the Royal Easter, or RNA, and buy the All-Breeds Grand Champion. There’s one every year.

But those who seek sustainable success, that is,

The time to gamble is never.

1

to win on incremental improvement and weighted percentages, generally adopt a more sensible business model. And they don’t gamble.

Primarily, the winner is the one with the odds in his favour. Superior genetics, proven over time to deliver consistent and repeatable results, is the cattleman’s best odds, no matter what the skies, markets or bureaucrats send.

Consistency wins. Consistently.

Consistency is probably the key focus at Huntington, and also our proudest achievement, hard-won through many generations of managed Charbray heredity. What’s more, with Charbrays, the importance of consistency is more acute, because it is hard to shake off the erroneous conception that the Charbray is just a two-breed cross.

Huntington Charbrays are much more.

Huntington genetics carry the proven Charbray advantages, but more than that, they carry all those traits of growth, durability, marketability and fertility optimized and stabilized through many generations of carefully managed heredity. Established, certified genetics are a breeder’s best insurance against throw-backs and ugly surprises.

A lack of predictability ruins the gambler; the risk manager profits from reliable performance data that is proven by consistency and repeatability.

With Huntington’s predictable performance genetics you can bank on more yield with less trouble in all seasons.

After the dust has settled from the 2018 sale.

You are welcome at the 2019 Huntington sale—Matt Welsh

Our annual sale has a real sense of occasion for us. After spending all year promoting and encouraging people to attend the event we love when it actually arrives. The greatest pleasure is in having the opportunity to get together with fellow producers and other supporters of the industry for a relaxed chat — as can be seen in the photos on these and the following pages. As our friends and clients all know, there is nothing we like more than talking Charbray.

3

IN SEPTEMBER LAST YEAR it was with genuine delight that we were able to welcome clients to our annual spring sale

and, at the same time, to the Huntington Stud Selling Complex, for our first-ever on-property sale and we were very happy with how the complex worked for all involved, (human and bovine).

This was a major investment made in challenging times — climate-wise and for the beef industry generally. But we went ahead and built it, because we believe in the future of stud beef. Superior genetics are our best insurance against the challenges we face day after day. No matter what unexpected circumstances may arise, our cattle have to be strong to cope, like we must.

Better genetics are the key, and therefore, the future of profitable breeding is tied to the future of the stud industry.

—FROM PREVIOUS PAGE

We are pretty pleased with our new selling complex, and happy to say our upcoming sale won’t be the second use of it. The Australian Top Stock Taroom Bull Sale has that distinction, conducting their sale on September 27.

Our sale, of 60 select, stabilised, performance-predictable Huntington Charbray bulls, and 10 elite registered females, will go under the hammer at Carrabah on October 4. We hope to see you here.

We think you will find the catalogue includes many choices perfect for your operation and your budget, and that you also find the Huntington Stud Selling Complex comfortable and inviting.

As always, we look forward to catching up after the sale to enjoy refreshments and a yarn.

What’s the best breed? That question was posed recently by The Gabba’s Norman Hotel in a terrific promo. Diners, who probably don’t know a lot about what it takes to produce a steak, chose Char-bray from the four popular breeds offered, purely on eating quality. From a producer’s perspective we believe nothing goes round Charbray in paddock per formance, so to balance the breed’s com mercial merits with its dinner-plate merits is surely a win-win for breeders. Hun tington’s Meg Welsh is pictured enjoying her steak at the Norman, and yes, she voted Charbray — freely, and without fear of family ex-communication ;-)

great pride in the classic Charbray

attributes of our stud cattle. Glad

to see the stamina trait is an

infectious one at our sale!

Time is a traveller...

MATT AND I enjoyed the most marvellous trip and hospitality in May this year, when we

visited David and Sarah Caldwell at Mole Station Tenterfield.

It was very dry down there at the time, which

is evident in some of the photos published

here. Other pictures were taken at a property

the Caldwell’s have east

of Tenterfield which is in

a supposed higher rainfall

area than Mole Station

itself, on the western side.

But the history of the area,

such as the old tobacco

drying shed (now disused)

in the main picture is

simply fascinating. A

relic of a by-gone era — that once-thriving

industry is long-past, but the gentleness of

the Tenterfield countryside and the spirit of

its people continues on, unchanged.

It is easy to appreciate the passion Peter

Allen surely felt writing his song about his

grand father: ‘Tenterfield Saddler’, such as

the lines “And if you had questions about

sheep, and flowers, and dogs, you just asked

the saddler.” A real

pleasure to visit such

a lovely part of rural

Australia.

We were also happy

to meet up again with

Huntington Hat Trick

who was purchased

at our 2014 sale. He

is a rising seven-year-

old now and it was pleasing to see how well

he and his progeny are holding up in the big

NSW dry.

EATING QUALITY has been a lively topic of conversation in recent years.

Many individual breed societies have been keeping a strong focus on the subject, and conducting various marketing campaigns around the eating quality debate.

From a commercial point of view I agree

that tooth-appeal is essential, but the real challenge is to get the perfect “paddock to plate” balance. Paddock performance happens first, and arguably has the greater influence on your bottom line. But winning both the paddock and plate ends of the equation is the ultimate goal, and Charbray proves it can be done.

The Charbray Society has been

98.5%is not a bad result.

conducting a feedlot trial in conjunction with Nolan Meats at Waterfall Feedlot in Goomeri for the last two years. The purpose has been to gauge the ability of Charbray cattle to grade MSA, and the results have been very successful.

Of the total number of Charbray cattle fed and processed over the trial period, 98.5 percent have graded MSA.

Consider that alongside the results of the recent Norman Hotel ‘Which is The Best Breed?’ contest where patrons chose Charbray out of the competing breeds for eating quality and there’s a compelling argument to say Charbray is an outstanding all-round article, and definitely worth thinking about.

Interesting visitors who’ve brightened our year

This is Clare Murray on the quad, a Welsh-family niece who quit her job as a medical engineer to spend a few months with us here at Huntington rekindling her rural roots. She even brought her spritely 90 y-o grandfather Vic Murray (right) all the way from New Zealand to visit — who put himself to work helping process a few cattle.

It was great to host Ollie Murphy (left) from Bendigo over the school holidays. Ollie, a young friend of the family, was great company and a willing helper. We’re pretty sure he enjoyed the change of scenery and preferred wearing work-boots to school shoes!

FIFO visitors. It was a very special treat to have a flying visit recently from the “All About Mates, Heli-Tour 2019”. Matt and Luke were taken up

by pilot Neill for a panoramic aerial inspection of the landscape which they appreciated and enjoyed tremendously — just a pity the grass was so short.

Hello mini-MaxViv Hunt, a successful business-man well known for his practical decision-making, purchased last year’s Huntington sale-topper, Matador Max (P) and sent us the photo (left) of this fine-looking calf, Max’s first; hopefully the first of many more to come. It’s true that from little things big things grow, and equally true that from good decisions, good things follow.

A polled weaner by Levi (P) A Lewis cow with a Musafa calf

Bill and Julie Lewis of Diamond Dove Charbrays are wonderful supporters of Huntington Charbrays and it was a real pleasure when Bill visited to look over this year’s draft of sale bulls recently.

Bill and Julie have purchased some of our top priced bulls in the last few years and the calves on the ground now (such as those pictured below) by both Huntington Levi (P) and Huntington Musafa (P) are showing the great consistency and marketability gained by the use of certified Charbray genetics.

Wheels keep turning all year round...A little ripper of a text message...Jonathan and Emma Ward of Balmoral

pleased to learn all was going well with

their purchase when we received these

IT’S A GREAT LIFE, producing and

selling Charbray genetics, and

no aspect of the industry is more

rewarding than catching up with fellow

breeders from across a vast territory who,

like us, know what it’s like producing beef

in the real Australian conditions where

every success is hard-won and, therefore,

very satisfying.

at our sale, on the phone, on Facebook,

moments that remind us we wouldn’t be

of our regular clients at our sale of course,

but there are just as many who call during

other times of the year to inspect, to

purchase or just to catch up. Here are a few

in the last 12 months — at the 2018 sale

and during the year — who were buying

I am not a gambler. It seems a difficult occupation; so few are successful.

Having said that, I concede it is difficult to explain to an outsider, looking in at our industry, that we are not all gamblers. We must cope with constant fickleness: weather, markets, bureaucratic meddling — the outsider has a point.

Well then, call me a risk-assessor; I’m not a gambler.

But, I’ve heard of the famous racehorse Winx and wondered if there is a breeding lesson to be gained there. Her sire (a quick internet search tells us) has appeared high up on the Australian Sires

Table for several years. He rocketed to the top of the ‘earnings’ scale for a short time when Winx came on the scene and started generating more prizemoney than all his other progeny combined.

A breeder’s dream come true, Winx; almost like McDonalds promoting your breed’s meat on their menu.

But I doubt Australia’s stallion owners are collectively holding their breath waiting to breed their own Winx. Commonsense would dictate they focus more on percentages. There are other stallions consistently higher on the earnings scale than Winx’s sire, generating more in prizemoney, spread across many more winners.

Any cattle breeder whose life is incomplete without a Winx-equivalent in their sire battery only needs to go to the Royal Easter, or National Sale, and buy the

All-Breeds Grand Champion. There’s one every year.

But those who seek sustainable success, that is, to win on incremental improvement and weighted percentages, generally adopt a more sensible business model. And they don’t gamble.

Over time, developing consistently-superior seedstock is more productive than aiming for random standouts, no matter what number of ribbons the occasional one may be decorated in.

Consistency wins. Consistently.

Consistency is probably the key focus at Huntington, and also our proudest achievement, hard-won through many generations of managed Charbray heredity.

What’s more, with Charbrays, the importance of consistency is more acute, because it is hard

to shake off the erroneous conception that the Charbray is just a two-breed cross.

A lack of predictability ruins the gambler, whereas risk managers profit from performance data that is proven through consistency and repeatability.

With Huntington’s predictable performance genetics you can bank on more yield with less trouble in all seasons.
