PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
YEAR 12 GRADUATION DINNER
Our Year 12 2015 Graduation was an outstanding success. It was a beautiful night for our Graduation Dinner which
was held in the Panthers auditorium. The evening was a wonderful celebration for our Year 12 students and their
parents.
I appreciate the wonderful support of Fr Donnelly, Fr James, Fr Peter and all the staff who attended our Graduation.
It is a very special occasion and the students and parents truly appreciate your presence. Congratulations to the
parent committee who prepared the venue and organised a lovely environment for our celebration. We had a
fantastic committee who met on several occasions over the last three months. I would also like to thank the extra
helpers last Saturday and Sunday who transformed the auditorium into a place of lights and colours.
This group was led by Mr Phil Lloyd and they worked wonderfully together as a team. They ensured that this night
was a very fitting way to celebrate this great milestone in these young peoples‟ lives.
I would like to extend a very sincere thank you to the committee Janine Attard, Sharon De
Iuliis, Valerie Gan, Jill Henderson-Evans, Elizabeth Johnson, Natalie Manning, Keryn
McGuire, Debby Roberts, Kathy Simpson, Denise Smith and Debbie Ward.
A special thank you to Jenny Hunt who completed a myriad of jobs and who was absolutely
fantastic with the organising of the tables and selling tickets over the last few months.
All this work was very much appreciated.
There are still two more important dates for Year 12 to remember:
Wednesday, 16th
December HSC results BBQ from 8.00a.m. in the College grounds.
Students & parents welcome.
Thursday, 17th
December ATAR results issued.

FATHER DONNELLY’S SPEECH FOR YEAR 12 GRADUATION
Father Donnelly‟s speech at the Year 12 graduation is both inspiring and thought
provoking. I am including his speech in this newsletter as I believe it is worth a read by
all parents and students.
“MacKillop College, 2015 will be remembered as a landmark year in the history of
MacKillop Senior College and St Paul‟s as they both came together as one college under
their new Principal, Anne O‟Brien. Changing the culture of an organisation is not always
easy but thanks to the personnel involved, the transition has been successful. MacKillop
College is the new name of the combined campuses.
This evening we are celebrating the conclusion of 13 years of schooling by Year 12.
Ahead there looms further toil whether at university or some other extension of the
learning process. One thing is certain – they are moving into a social environment
like nothing we have seen before. We live in a society focussed on qualifications,
awards and jobs. This looming environment will rather focus on skills, capabilities
and tasks. It will be a world where innovation and creativity will be the difference
between success and failure.
Think of the impact of this statistic. In 2014 there were 7.2 billion people on the planet – there are 6.9 billion
mobile devices. In the last five years there has been a fivefold increase in the number of adults using the internet
via their mobile phones. This information explosion means that there is no business model that will not be under
threat.
But one of the really great threats for Australia lies in this. One in eight Australian adults are in the lowest band of
literacy and one in five is in the lowest band of numeracy. So how can we compete in a global world and make the
transition in our economy that will be necessary if we cannot address the basics. And why would we as a decent
society allow people to face the exclusion and humiliation that comes from not having these basic skills.
Twenty seven per cent of our young people are neither in full time work or study. Sixty two per cent of unemployed
youth have not completed a Year 12 qualification. At present the government is looking for ways to cut expenditure
so that we will live within our means. It is counter-productive to cut back on the funding education. Rather they
should be focussed on requiring better outcomes for what we spend on education as a nation. Money is not the
problem.
We should not be discouraged by all of this, rather we should be challenged because as a
nation we have shown in the past an extraordinary ability to rise above adversity. I think it is
the land we live in that has shaped this in the Australian character – Dorothea MacKellar‟s
land of droughts and flooding rains, of beauty and terror.
This college has a record of great academic achievement. But its achievements go far beyond the purely academic.
Places like MacKillop help to make people more human. It is about helping young people to face up to the greatest
human challenge – to become the very person that they can be. At our birth we are handed the raw material which
we are called to shape into just such a person. So while we might focus on preparing to make a living at school, we
also need to be focussed on something more fundamental to happiness, to learn how to live as authentic human
persons.
That raises another challenge. With all of these looming changes in the economy of our nations we must never start
looking upon people as disposable items. The economy must serve the people – not the other way around.
This college, because it is a catholic college, is dedicated to a proposition. It
recommends authentic Christian values to its students as a way of living, as a way to
achieve true personhood. It proposes a way to travel through life, a way laid out by
Christ. That way is based on the belief that there is a God who loves us, who is not remote from us, who makes our
concerns his concerns, who in Christ has demonstrated what is important and what is not.
To these propositions, my young friends, you can give one of three responses. The first is straight out rejection.
Secondly, notional assent and I would like to give you an example of this. It is after the resurrection of the apostles
who abandoned Jesus have suddenly become lions and they are down in the porch of the temple courageously
acclaiming Jesus as the promised saviour. A crowd gathers on the other side of the street and there are murmurs of
approval of the message that they are hearing. They gave notional assent, that is in their minds but as the Acts of
the Apostles dryly observed, none of them crossed the street to join the apostles. That would have been the third
way, what we call real assent. Allow me to conclude then by recommending to you Year 12 students that you be
prepared always to stand up for the values you believe in, for the sake of your own personal integrity be prepared
to cross the street.”
“May the Spirit of the Lord be with you” Anne O’Brien Principal
YEAR 7-10 MAJOR AWARD CEREMONY
A special occasion for our junior students is the Year 7-10 Major Award Ceremony which will be held on
Wednesday, 16th December at the MacKillop College MPC (Junior campus). This is an opportunity to
acknowledge students who have excelled in many areas, academic, cultural and sporting. These students receive a
trophy as a symbol of their involvement and achievement in a particular area.
It has become a tradition that these awards are sponsored by families or businesses in our College community. If
you are interested in sponsoring an award we would love to hear from you. Your support is invaluable and greatly
appreciated. The cost of the sponsorship is $50 per award.
If you are in a position to assist, please contact the College office 65832632.
Thank you in anticipation.
FR ROB GALEA PRESENTATION
On Tuesday, we were very privileged to have Fr Rob Galea visit MacKillop College, to present „one.strength‟. Fr
Rob told us about his faith journey, sharing the difficulties of his teenage years, and then the turnaround he
experienced when he established a relationship with Jesus. It was an honest and inspiring presentation, interspersed
with some beautiful singing by Fr Rob on guitar, accompanied by Joseph Moorhouse on keyboards. It‟s no surprise
he did so well on The X Factor! Fr Rob reminded us all of our awesomeness, of the importance of prayer, and also
that we should not be limited by our „buts‟. It was a great reminder about living life to the full and seizing
opportunities, even when we are a bit scared and anxious about them.
Fr Rob‟s visit would not have been possible without the support of Fr James and St Agnes‟ Parish. We would like
to sincerely thank Fr James for coordinating Fr Rob‟s visit and ensuring it all went smoothly. There were many
others involved behind the scenes, and a huge thanks goes out to them as well, for all their hard work and effort.

ST AGNES’ PARISH NEWS
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL - PASTORAL CARE AND STAFF SUPPORT
The Paris terror attacks that occurred on Friday night have left the international community
reeling. Although Australia is geographically far from the attacks, the extensive media
coverage means most, if not all children will have been exposed to what happened in some
way.
In addition, there are Australians visiting France who were injured or exposed to the attacks; and thousands of
French families living in Australia who will be deeply affected by these tragic events. The closer the event is to a
person, the more likely it will have a significant impact.
If children haven‟t seen images on TV, the Internet or in newspapers, they may have overheard adults talking about
the events. Older children may have been exposed to the tragedies through Facebook and other social media. Those
who are currently unaware will hear about it from students at school.
We know from research on the aftermath of the tragic events associated with 9/11 that repeated viewing of trauma
in the media can be disturbing for both children and adults. Children are especially vulnerable to experiencing
feelings of loss of safety, fear or apprehension following exposure to such events.
Parents will need to manage their own shock, grief, anxiety and anger before talking to children. Look after
yourself. Take time out to do something for yourself, be with friends, go for a short walk, practice calm breathing
or do something simple you normally enjoy. If you feel affected by the events make time to talk with someone
about it. If you need additional support ask for it. Accept support if it is offered, even if you think it isn‟t needed.
As a parent, you may be wondering how you will talk with your children about the terror attacks. What do they
know already? What will they be saying tomorrow at school? What can I tell them? How can I say the right thing?
Six key things we can do to support children who feel scared or worried as a result of the Paris attacks:
Normalise. Let children know that feeling scared, sad or angry after seeing or hearing about such events is
normal and that the fear will subside.
Provide perspective. Answer questions, or correct inaccurate information honestly, simply and age-appropriately.
Avoid cultural stereotyping.
Provide a sense of safety and control. Remind children they are safe; that extreme acts of terror are not occurring in
their street, suburb, town or country. However, some older children may wish to further discuss the Martin Place
siege that took place in Sydney in 2014 or other recent terror events. Help them feel safe by maintaining routines,
and discussing what, and who keeps them safe at home, at school and in the broader community.
Promote coping behaviours. Have the child identify things they can do to help them feel better such as talk to a
parent, write in a journal, play a game, go for a run or spend time with friends. Suggest they do one of these things
when they feel scared, sad or angry.
Focus on helping. The famous Fred Rogers quote can be a helpful way to begin discussions.
„When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, „Look for the helpers. You
will always find people who are helping.‟ To this day, especially in times of „disaster,‟ I remember my mother's
words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this
world.‟
Most children who experience, witness or hear about a traumatic event will recover after several days, however for
some it might take several weeks.
It is important that if the child has been displaying concerning behaviours for more than one month following the
traumatic event, it is recommended that you refer them to a psychologist or the family doctor.

OFFICE NEWS
ABSENCES FOR YEAR 11
As you may be aware, we are currently contacting parents via text message for absences
daily. If you respond to this text, we can use this information in lieu of a note being written.
However, the reply text must state the student‟s name, parent‟s name and reason for
absence. If this is not stated on the text, the reply cannot be used and a written note will be
required. All written/text explanations for absences must be received within seven days.
SECOND HAND UNIFORMS
The senior campus has an abundance of second hand uniforms for both boys and girls. However, there are no junior
girl skirts only senior girls‟ skirts.
If your uniform is looking a bit weary come and see Jenny or Kylie on the senior campus.
SUBJECT AND EXCURSION STATEMENTS – YEARS 7-10 Thank you to those families who have met this commitment. Term 4 fees are now overdue. Reminder statements
were mailed last week. Payments via Bpay are encouraged on a regular basis (weekly/fortnightly) for those who are
not making payment in full. These amounts may need to be increased over the coming weeks to ensure a nil
balance is on the account by the beginning of December.
Queries regarding these accounts should be directed to the main College office (Ocean Drive).
YEAR 12 NEWS
GRADUATION DINNER
Despite the awful weather conditions, this was a great night experienced by students, their families and College
staff. None of this would have been possible without the hardworking and creative decorating Committee members
who began planning in August, as well as the extra parents who chipped in to help set up on Saturday morning.
Some excellent pre-graduation music was performed by the MacKillop Big Band, Stage Band and “Groove
Merchants” organised by Rob Denham.
We were fortunate to have all of our Parish Priests participate. Fr Donnelly gave an impressive opening address and
presented three St Agnes‟ Youth Ministry Awards, then the first of our Major College Awards – Fr Donnelly
Community Service. Fr James blessed our meals and later presented the Mary MacKillop Award. Later in the
evening Fr Peter surprised all with a great rendition of “Horses”, finding his inner Daryl Braithwaite.
Our College Principal, Anne O‟Brien, gave a very moving speech, touching the hearts of students and their
families, and presented the award to Student of the Year. We were fortunate to have present our local Federal
Member, Dr David Gillespie, to present his School Community Service Award, State Member, Leslie Williams,
present the School Spirit Award and Coordinating Executive Officer of Parish Education, John McQueen, present
the Quiet Achiever Award. College Captains, Sofia De Iuliis and Seamus Dempsey, also sincerely thanked the
staff of MacKillop and their parents for the support, love and guidance to get them to this stage. Thanks must also
go to Jenny Hunt for all planning done in the lead up to and on the night, and to Assistant Principal, Dave Jenkins,
who did another excellent job as the Master of Ceremonies.
There was also time for some dancing and celebrating to commemorate the end of 13 years of primary and
secondary schooling, for most in the St Agnes‟ Parish Catholic education system.

HSC RESULTS AND BBQ BREAKFAST – WEDNESDAY, 16TH
DECEMBER
The HSC results are released by BOSTES on this day. All students are invited to a BBQ
breakfast (bacon and egg rolls) from around 8.15a.m. – 9.00a.m. This is an opportunity to
see how fellow classmates fared as well as investigate career options in light of results
achieved.
ATARS RELEASED THURSDAY, 17TH
DECEMBER
Just to remind students and parents that these final ranks are not given to the College by
the organisation – we rely totally on students letting us know how they went, and
appreciate a phone call or email on the Thursday to let us know. Student ATARS are
usually acknowledged by the College in local newspapers, so it would be great to have a
complete and accurate record.

HOMEWORK CLUB Students are reminded of the great resource they have in the Homework Club
that operates Tuesday and Wednesday from 3.15p.m. till 5.00p.m. in the
MacKillop Senior Library. Teachers have offered to help students during these
times, which is a wonderful opportunity for students to meet with teachers on
an individual basis.
THANK YOU
Thank you to the House captains, Liam Coelho, Alannah Hemsley, Max Lower and
Monica Worth along with Mrs Watson and Mr Lloyd, who are organising lunchtime
activities for Year 11 students. I encourage all the student body to get along to the MPC
to have some fun and games during their break and clear the brain for the afternoon‟s
classes.
UNIFORM I am very concerned with the number of uniform issues that I have been dealing with
lately. Boys need to wear the shirt tucked in and shorts must be worn with a belt. Girls
are reminded that skirts are to be no more than 3cm from the ground when kneeling.
Sport uniform is to be worn only on Tuesdays and when there are activities scheduled.
There must be no more than two rings in each ear and these are sleepers or studs, not
oversized rods or dangling earrings. Plain, black, polishable, lace–up leather shoes are
the footwear requirements.
Dealing with uniform issues detracts from the main purpose of teachers and students at school.
If anyone needs uniform items, there are a number of skirts, shirts and shorts in the Senior Office. Please see the
ladies in the office for assistance.

BUSINESS STUDIES NEWS
On Monday, 16th November our HSC Business Studies classes visited McDonald‟s to better understand the
operations strategies of this well-known enterprise. Managers Paul Ashton, Bronwyn Finn and Team Leader,
Jessica spoke to students about the various challenges of operating a fast food chain, how they establish a
competitive advantage and methods of managing their supply chain and inventory demands. Students had the
opportunity to walk through the production facilities and witness how the goods are produced to ensure quality
standards are met and wastage is minimised.
Hearing and witnessing first-hand from our major business case study was an excellent experience for our Business
students who will benefit from the information they have gained in upcoming assessment tasks.

YEAR 9 AND 10 T20 CRICKET
The MacKillop College Years 9 and 10 T20 cricket team were beaten by Great
Lakes College, Forster in the final of the Mid North Coast T20 cricket competition
at Tuffins Lane last Thursday in what was a hard fought contest.
Batting first, Great Lakes College were bowled out for 82 in the 17th over. Every
bowler used contributed to the wicket taking efforts. Josh Minahan (2/8), Josh
Morley (2/6), Jake Reimer-Madden (2/17), Isaac Trow (1/11), Tom Brennan
(1/18), Will Rogers (1/11) and Isaac Lawrence (1/6) all bowled well and were
backed up with excellent fielding, and Captaincy, from Fraser Carroll.
Everything was going as planned for the team as Fraser Carroll and Caleb Gallagher opened the batting. After
six overs MacKillop College were 0/29. Then disaster struck. Fraser was dismissed for 17, followed by Isaac
Lawrence (2) and Caleb Gallagher (12). Some excellent fast bowling and great catching from Great Lakes
College saw MacKillop College crumble to be all out for 71 in the 18th over -11 runs short of the required total.
Interestingly Great Lakes bowled 11 less no balls and wides than MacKillop did!
Earlier, MacKillop College beat Wingham High School in a one sided match to qualify for the final against Great
Lakes College. MacKillop College batted first and amassed 173 runs from their 20 overs. Fraser Carroll (25) and
Caleb Gallagher (39) started brilliantly and Isaac Lawrence plundered the Wingham attack scoring 50 before
retiring. Tommy Brennan (17 not out) and Koby Smith (9) made valuable contributions towards the end of the
innings.
In reply, Wingham reached 93 from their 20 overs falling well short of the required total. Tommy Brennan (3/21)
was the pick of the bowlers, while Isaac Trow, Josh Minahan and Will Rogers also took a wicket.
This was the fifth year in a row the Year 9 and 10 T20 team qualified
for the final of this competition and were able to win the previous
four. To come so close to making it five in a row is a fantastic
achievement. The team is to be congratulated on their excellent effort
on the field and at training. Well done boys!
The Year 9 and 10 T20 squad is Fraser Carroll (C), Caleb
Gallagher, Isaac Lawrence, Isaac Trow, Josh Minahan, Jacob
Searle, Jeremy Boys, Koby Smith, Tommy Brennan, Jack Williams,
Jake Reimer-Madden, Josh Morley, Will Rogers.
