HOTTEST TENNIS IN THE STATE

Bushfires, sirens, helicopters, choking smoke, flying embers, evacuations…& the CHS State Tennis Finals. Great Lakes College’s boy’s tennis team found itself playing very high level tennis, amidst dramatic circumstances in Ulladulla last week. The ten regional winners from around NSW gathered in Ulladulla to play off for the Stan Jones Trophy for the Combined High School’s tennis championship. The bushfires made for very tough conditions & had everyone on edge. Great Lakes College, the Hunter region winners, were drawn against Coffs Harbour High, the north coast champions in their opening match. A very consistent display, in both singles & doubles saw Great Lakes move into the semis with a 7 sets to 1 victory. The boys, Nathan Monk, Sam Gibson, Eli Worldon & Blue Evans were glad to get away from the smoke & rest up on Wednesday afternoon. They returned on Thursday morning to play last year’s winners, Sydney Boys High for a spot in the final. Sydney Boys ended up winning 5 sets to 2 in a tense affair. They were the first & only sets Sydney Boys dropped in 2018. Great Lakes College the faced Westfield Sports High in the playoff for 3rd & 4th. Westfield Sports now has a dedicated tennis academy & were confident of victory until…. two comprehensive doubles wins to Great Lakes followed by Nathan’s continued singles dominance put us 3 sets to nil up. At 5 sets to 1 Westfield had had enough & called it off. Great Lakes secured the bronze medal, a remarkable achievement as nearly 300 schools entered this year’s CHS tennis. For the second year in a row, our team were the highest placed team outside of Sydney. In Nathan, Blue, Sam & Eli our school has a wonderful combination of talented sportsmen, who have a rounded & positive attitude towards their sport, combined with being fine ambassadors for our school. Their parents have been extremely supportive as has Jaime McDonagh from Forster Tennis Club. It has been my absolute pleasure to work with these young men for the last two years. HORIZONS BROADEN FOR STUDENTS AFTER CANBERRA UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE The following article was taken from the Country Education Fund of Australia's website which told the story of our students' three day excursion to the University of Canberra in Week 5 of this term. In late August CEF again hit the road to give rural and regional students a small taste of uni life, this time in Canberra. A total of 34 students from Great Lakes College in Forster Tuncurry, Boorowa Central and Orange and Murrumburrah High Schools travelled to Canberra for a University Experience Camp offered collaboratively between the University of Canberra (UC) and CEF. Juliet, CEF’s go-to team member in partnerships and committees, accompanied the students and teachers and said it’s an important for country-raised students to see what universities are like. “The experience days and camp aim to improve students’ understanding and awareness of higher education as a viable post-school option for them while also raising their aspirations towards this idea,” Juliet shared. The students were engaged in activities and workshops from the health, science, education and media faculties and attended the University of Canberra Open Day, showcasing the career and study options offered at the Uni. Students also got to meet current students, academics, support staff and like-minded students from other rural NSW high schools as well as tour some on-campus accommodation. Juliet said she was encouraged by the students’ attentiveness and was glad the trip was a worthwhile one for all those that attended. “Well done to these kids who took advantage of this opportunity. And thank you to the staff and schools who attended and encouraged the students’ involvement,” Juliet said. “Congratulations to the team at the University of Canberra’s widening participation unit who organised the event. The feedback we have received from the students and parents has been really positive.” Rebecca Mason from UC’s Widening Participation team shared Juliet’s enthusiasm for the experience. “We had a great few days and the feedback we have received from the academic staff at the University is that the students were engaged, polite, insightful and a pleasure to work with, which is a fantastic reflection on the students and their schools, and CEF’s efforts in promoting the camp to participation schools,” she said. Here are some of the comments UC received from students who attended the University Experience Camp: “Thank you for being so supportive and welcoming, this has been an amazing experience!” “It was amazing, everyone was really nice and very inclusive.” “This was an amazing experience and I will drag my mum next time.” “It was filled with fun and information, an amazing experience.” A big thank you to the University of Canberra for hosting us. On September 4th, students in Year 7, 8 and 9 were treated to a series of workshops provided by Charles Sturt University's 'Future Moves' team. Careers games, practical based STEM related challenges and entrepreneurial based activities were used to get students thinking about the realities of working life and the demands of the 21st Century labour market. Prizes were on offer for taking part in the activities and all students were engaged with the activities throughout. We thank Charles Sturt University for providing these fun and informative workshops.

CERTIFICATE 1 IN FINANCIAL SERVICES

A group of students in Year 10 completed the Certificate 1 in Financial Services over two days in August and September. The course was run in partnership with the Smith Family who provided the course to our students completely free of charge. The course covered things such as setting financial goals, creating budgets, developing savings plans, recognising scams, understanding credit and debt traps, taxation and superannuation. The real life application of this content will be particularly useful for our students, not to mention the fact that it is another impressive addition to their growing resumes.

YEAR 10 FORSTER CAMPUS SNOW ADVENTURE

5am Sunday 19th August saw 45 year 10 students from Forster Campus leave on their adventure to the

snow. After a very long bus trip we stopped in Canberra to visit the Australian War Memorial and

Questacon. Then it was on to Berridale to prepare for the next 3 days at the snow.

Monday and Wednesday at the snow saw perfect conditions with brilliant sunshine, temperatures of

-2OC max and mountains of snow to keep everyone happy. Everyone took on the challenge of learning

how to either snowboard or ski at Smiggins Hole or Perisher. On Tuesday the conditions deteriorated

with strong winds and snow squalls. The conditions did not deter the students who took to the slopes

with gusto, gaining more knowledge during skiing and snowboarding lessons and challenging

themselves on the more difficult runs.

Everyone improved over the 3 days and had a great time in the snow. Behaviour was excellent and all

students were great role models for the college.

VISUAL ARTS EXCURSION TO SYDNEY

On Friday the 17th of August, a group of 50 dedicated Visual Arts and Photography and Digital Media

students from years eight, nine and ten travelled to Sydney with Ms Smith and Ms Pink to see selected

exhibitions and to access the varied scenery for subject matter in our photographs. We started our day

at The Art Gallery of New South Wales, seeing the blockbuster Archibald, Wynne and Sulman

exhibitions. The Archibald prize attracts the most visitors to the gallery each year, with the winning

artist being awarded $100,000. After viewing the artworks, we walked through the Botanic Gardens to

Circular Quay, taking advantage of the many amazing photographic opportunities to use in class tasks.

We had lunch overlooking the harbour and then spent the afternoon at the Museum of Contemporary

Art viewing exciting new techniques and concepts. We had dinner in the city before leaving for home.

Thank you to all the students, parents and staff at school who helped make this fun day possible, we

had a great time!

TUNCURRY CAMPUS

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Staffing Mrs Fealy is retiring at the end of the term. She has been part of the College for the last 14 years teaching in English and History. Her professionalism, dedication, sense of humour and unique presentation style will be missed. Her position is currently advertised with a commencement date of Day 1, Term 1 2019. What’s been happening? Year 10 students recently participated in the VALID Science test. The Campus did exceptionally well in VALID last year and I am hoping for even better results this year. The Science KLA includes the VALID result in their Year 10 assessment schedule. Year 8 will also be doing the VALID Science test later on this term. Throughout last week, Year 7 participated in trialling the Online NAPLAN test. Feedback from staff and students has been positive with students more engaged and finding the process a lot easier than the paper version. We are hoping have Year 7 and 9 students in 2019 sit the Online NAPLAN exam rather than the paper version. The Great Lakes Learning Community Aboriginal Numeracy competition, for Stage 3 and 4 students was held recently. I am pleased to report that Tuncurry Campus finished first on the day. Congratulations to the students on a wonderful achievement and to Mr Gortin in his organisation of the day. A number of excursions are currently taking place as I write this report. Year 9 is on the Gold Coast for their rewards excursion with Miss Buttworth, Ms Priestley, Mrs Ieroianni and Mr Hudson. Four of our Aboriginal female students are involved in a 3 day STEM camp. Mrs Bucksherim is accompanying the girls. I look forward to hearing and reading about the adventures that the students bring back from both excursions. The Term 3 Merit Assembly was held on Tuesday 11th September. I was impressed by the number of students who were acknowledged for their efforts and achievements this term. It was also pleasing to see the high number of parents that attended the assembly. During the assembly Lilli Bultitude, in year 7, and Will Elliott, in year 8, presented to the audience their winning Public Speaking speeches. Both were amazing in their presentation and with their content. Congratulations Lilli and Will. Flannel Friday The SRC recently had a fundraising day, called Flannel Friday. Funds raised are going to the Halidays Point Lions Club for distribution for the Drought Appeal. The SRC did a fantastic job arranging a cake stall, a BBQ and running a variety of activities for the students to participate in. A total of $1000 was raised. The SRC also held a fundraiser on Daffodil Day. Students were asked to donate a coin during roll call. To add an element of fun, each roll call had to line their coins up and measure the length of the line. A common trick to win was to donate 20 five cent pieces, rather than one $1 coin! A total of $402 was raised. Key dates 20th September – Parent Teacher afternoon. 3.30 – 6.30 Mr Paul Rosenbaum Relieving Principal

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It is the time of year when WE begin to prepare for next year’s curriculum. After a well-attended course information evening, students in Year 8 have selected two 200 hour elective courses for commencement in 2019. Courses are still being finalised and students will be advised of their pattern of study next term. Similarly, students in Year 7 will soon be selecting two elective courses that will run for a semester each in 2019. These electives are designed to be a taster of some of the courses offered in Year 9 & 10. We are pleased to advise that we have broadened our choices for selection this year.

Preparations for the enrolment of our Year 7 2019 cohort has also commenced. Earlier in the term, we held a very successful information evening for parents and students. It was very pleasing to see so many new parents starting their partnership with our campus and college. In addition to this, our 2019 Year 7 Adviser, Ms Indigo Lawrie and our relieving Head Teacher Wellbeing, Mrs Danielle Kirkland have started visiting our partner primary schools to meet students and ensure a smooth transition into high school for Year 6 students. We look forward to welcoming these students at an orientation day in Term 4.

As I write this report, many students in our Year 9 cohort are attending a four-day excursion to the Gold Coast. Students will be engaging in many exciting activities that will broaden their experiences and extend their social capacity. Such opportunities are not possible without the commitment of staff who give of their time in the organisation of and attendance at overnight excursions. Particular thanks should be extended to Year 9 Adviser, Ms Danielle Buttsworth who was supported by Ms Jane Priestley, Mr Guy Hudson and Mrs Cath Ieroianni.

Our school is very pleased with the majority of students who adhere to our expectations around uniform. Please be reminded that if your child is unable to be in full school uniform on any school day, they are expected to bring a letter of explanation from parents/carers to be submitted to their roll call teacher. If you are experiencing difficulty in sourcing or purchasing the correct uniform, please contact your child’s year adviser.

I hope you enjoy the upcoming two week break, and I look forward to a busy and productive Term 4.

2018 PREMIER’S DEBATING CHALLENGE On the 6th to the 7th of August, our debate team – consisting of Antonia Amato, Ebony Cavanough, Joel Elliott and Ashley Thompson travelled to Coffs Harbour - accompanied by Ms Greening, to compete in the regional level of the Premier’s Debating Challenge. The two day trip consisted of 3 rounds (quarter, semi and final) and 3 workshops, along with a series of mock debates. In the quarter final our team came up against Casino high school with the topic ‘That combat sports should be banned’. For this debate we were negative. There were many academic and thought-provoking arguments delivered by both teams - yet unfortunately we were unsuccessful in moving on to the semi-finals – even though we fought for a close debate. However this meant that we could still take part in the mock debates and learn many valuable debating techniques and interesting facts. The winners of the regional final were the team from Toormina High who were put up against Casino High to present an intelligent debate around the topic “That PDHPE lessons should be optional”. In addition to this Ashley Thompson was selected for the North Coast Regional Flight Team and will be representing the school later this year in the 2018 Premier’s Debating Finals at Sydney University. TUNCURRY CAMPUS FLANNO FRIDAY On the 31st August, Great Lakes Tuncurry Junior Campus held a Flanno Friday with the purpose of raising awareness and money in regards to the drought in Queensland and New South Wales. It has been a difficult period for rural communities and at the beginning of the term, Mr Rosenbaum challenged the school to create an initiative where as a schooling community, we were able to help. The event was organised by the SRC, which involved students wearing a flannelette shirt to school and an afternoon of activities including musical performances, a cake stall, a BBQ, whip cracking, tug of war amongst others. The SRC would like to thank those who donated money, provided baked goods and their time to organise the event and cater for it. The school was able to raise $835.60, which will be donated to the Halliday’s Point Lions Club to distribute to those in need. Jesse Pietrzak, English and History Teacher

SENIOR CAMPUS

UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA TRIP (IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE

COUNTRY EDUCATION FOUNDATION OF AUSTRALIA)

The University of Canberra Experience was an amazing opportunity for students to explore their options post high school. On the first day, they presented us with a range of careers that could be explored at university, and some statistics on the arising future to give us an understanding of the demand of certain careers we may not have even been exposed to yet. This was supported by a range of facts, such as 1 in 7 divorces are due to Facebook and there are many degrees being offered for careers that don't even exist yet. We also had some fun exploring new teaching techniques, like the use of teaching Indigenous sports for throwing coordination and historical and ethical studies. During the experience on the following days, we also undertook an activity that helped us to navigate around the univer-sity, and some workshops in areas such as media, journalism, law and food technology. These were very informative and revealed aspects of the careers that none of us knew. Finally, we went to Questacon, which was incredible, and explored more refined options that we may have wanted to explore for our futures. I went to the Journalism and Occupational Therapy talks and found each career not to be what I thought they'd be, but equally exciting. Overall, this was an incredible opportunity and I would like to thank the staff and students of our college and the University for organising the experience! It was very enlightening and I'm sure everyone gained from the visit! Written by Dannielle Dobson Year 11

THE REALITY OF MODERN HISTORY

Imagine meeting a survivor of the Holocaust or being in a mosque at prayer time. For Great Lakes College’s Year 11 Modern History students, these were part of our recent Sydney Excursion. At the Sydney Jewish Museum, the students spent time looking at the exhibits based on horrors of the concentration camps. The experience of Jewish people during the Nazi regime was on display in often confronting & heart breaking ways. Our students also had a series of presentations and lectures on the Rise of Nazism. The highlight was Litzi, a Jewish woman who survived the Holocaust. As a young girl her family were transported to a Jewish ghetto, where she endured horrible conditions. Litzi never saw her brother or parents again, after they were transported to Auschwitz. Her story of then prospering as a refugee in Australia was amazing, sad, confronting & heart-warming. Later we travelled to Auburn Gallipoli Mosque. The students were stunned by the beauty of the mosque. A huge dome covered in hand painted decorations & a floor of vivid Turkish carpets. Our guide Ergun, gave the students a fascinating talk about Islam, Muslims & the Turkish community in Australia & the meaning of Arabic terms and symbols. He also spoke about the importance of Jerusalem to Muslims. After prayer time, the students enjoyed all manner of Arabic & Turkish foods at Auburn shops. A huge thank you to our driver Tony Koch, who endured a long day (4.00am start) & Sydney traffic. Matt Horne, Lynn Graham Teachers, Senior Campus
