Yet again, our Heritage Open Days provides the opportunity forLeicester to showcase its remarkable 2000 year history.

Leicester’s heritage buildings, parks, universities, businesses, creativevenues and faith buildings will once again stage events to revealtheir stories and unseen heritage to visitors.

As well as old favourites there are plenty of new events to beenjoyed. Leicester has so many hidden historical gems and stories todiscover.

The programme is again made possible by the dedication andenthusiasm of volunteers that the city is very fortunate to have.They generously share their passion for our local history byproviding access and staging events encouraging people to discoverand appreciate the rich, diverse culture and heritage of our city.

Belgrave Cemetery opened in1881 for the benefit of thepeople of Belgrave and covers5.5 acres. There are many largeVictorian memorials in thecemetery carved from marbleand granite. A real credit to thestonemason’s art.

The cemetery, under themanagement of Leicester CityCouncil Bereavement Service, isthe final resting place of 14000souls many with perpetual burialrights. Whilst it is no longerpossible to purchase a grave,interment still take place infamily graves.

The Friends of BelgraveCemetery will be on hand tohighlight the interesting storiesbehind some of those laid to restin the cemetery and there is anopportunity to join a guidedwalk.

Cemetery information forvisitors trying to find a gravewill be available.Complimentary refreshmentsprovided. There is ampleparking and disabled toiletfacilities. Sensible footwear isadvisable. Children under 16must be accompanied by anadult.

Throughout the day, 45-minute escorted tours of the building will beconducted, allowing visitorsto access the Masonic LodgeRooms which are some ofthe finest in the country.Senior members will be on hand to explain thesymbolism, history and thepractice of Freemasonry. Come and see the buildingthat has helped protectLeicester’s citizens from fireand other emergencies since1927. Designed by localarchitects A.E & T Sawdayand built between 1925 and 1937, the Central FireStation was the mostadvanced in the UnitedKingdom and receivedvisitors from all over theworld.

After an award-winningrefurbishment in 2010 theCentral Fire Station has been returned to its formerlayout and lots of originalarchitectural features arestill visible. Tours around thebuilding will be taken byretired Fire Fighters whoserved in this iconic andimportant station.

Also learn more aboutthe architect of this amazing building,Joseph Goddard.

Stoneygate TramDepot: A Journey Backin Time

An Edwardian tram depotbuilt in 1904 to coincidewith the introduction ofelectric trams in Leicester.The building is in originalcondition and even has theold tram rails which you canstill see today.
