Scope Beside fluids, pasty substances, e.g. greases can be tested. In this case the substance must be brought incontact with the slip ring during the run, using a glass rod.

Beside other substance related or for specific applications modified methods, 3 standard procedures arerecommended:

Method IDetermination of total activityThis method allows to make a statement about the build-up time of a load carrying film and its carryingcapacity, considering the evaluation of meter of noise.

Method IIDetermination of the strength of the formed reaction filmThis method determinates the adhesive strength of the formed reaction film and the additional activation(degree of activation).

Method IIIDilution test by ReichertThe dilution test is to be used for high-active substances forming a very small abrasion area (less than 3 mm²)and building up a load bearing film very quickly as shown by a meter of noise detection of 0.

All methods require a run-in slip ring.

The testing machine basically consists of a rigidly-mounted test roll, which is pressed against a revolving friction wheel by means ofleverage. The friction wheel is immersed with its lower third in thesample under test. Its rotating speed is of such a rate that asufficient quantity of lubricant will always get to the contact surfaceof the test roll and the friction wheel.

Due to the crosswise arrangement of the axles, an elliptical wearingsurface will be formed, the size of which will grow corresponding tothe operating time elapsed.

The extension of the wearing surface results in a decrease of thespecific surface pressure between friction wheel and test roll, whereby a load-carrying lubricant film will be built-up.

This can be recognized by a sudden discontinuation of the grindingnoise. The size of the clearly-marked wear surface, from which theload capacity of the lubricant film can be calculated, and theresultant friction length read from a counter device gives a rate forthe assessment of the liquid under examination.

ApplicationsOnly some examples of the wide variety of application purposes ofthis instrument will be listed below.

a) Inspection of regularity of lubricants with respect to their loadcapacity. Particularly suitable Method I.

b) Determination of the "emaciation€ (Reichert value increase) ofgear oils and cutting solutions. Particularly suitable Method II.

c) Selection of suitable additives when developing or improvingcutting oils and for solving similar tasks. Particularly suitable MethodIII.

d) Optimizing combinations of lubricants and bearing materials.
