Th ree cheers for Canada’s best

DOUGLAS GALLOWAY PHOTOAlexandra Purgavie (ushered by teammate Jolene Hadfi eld at last Saturday’s rodeo parade) carries the tall trophy.

By Jennifer LangYou know it’s a big deal when the

trophy is actually larger than the smallest member of your team.

Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers cheer-leaders have proven they’re the best in the country, winning their division at the Canadian National Cheer and Dance Championships May 13-15 in Niagara Falls.

Th e 19-member team delivered two, 2.5-minute routines, competing in the senior advanced division.

Th eir achievement is particularly noteworthy when you consider they were up against strong competition in their division – and managed to overcome an unexpected injury dur-ing their fi nal performance, when Alexandra Purgavie hyper-extended her knee and had to walk off the mat mid-routine.

Her teammates carried on, deliv-ering a fl awless performance that earned them the gigantic champion-ship trophy.

“When the girls came off the mat, they burst into tears because they knew this was the last time they were

going to compete together,” Loretta Scott, the team’s staff liaison, said. Th ree cheerleaders are graduating and a fourth has been sidelined by a chronic injury that will prevent her from competing next year.

Th e close-knit squad has been put-ting in 12 hours of practices a week since September, in addition to indi-vidual workouts for conditioning.

Getting the massive trophy home proved another challenge. Air car-rier Westjet said they had to check the award as baggage because it exceeded carry-on size restrictions.

But when a baggage handler warned team captain Kelsey Boule their prize would be destroyed by other suitcases in the luggage area, the cheerleaders pleaded with a steward to let them bring it on board despite the rules.

Th ey carefully wrapped it inside team jackets and were allowed to store it in an overhead cabin compartment.

Th e Canadian National Cheer and Dance Championship is the most prestigious cheer event in the country. It draws more than 300 teams from across North America.

BOAZ JOSEPH PHOTOA competitor takes a spill at the Mutton Bustin’ event.

tention for Canucks playoff games, 77,000 people came out to the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair on the weekend – up 5,000 visitors from last year.

Of those, 15,000 headed over to see the rodeo.

Th e 65th year of the Cloverdale Rodeo showcased the world’s top cowboys and cowgirls and had the second-richest pay-out of more than $360,000.

Th e storyline of this year’s rodeo goes to the bulls, which managed to keep cowboys off their back with a vengeance.

In fact, only Clayton Foltyn was able to stay on the bull for the statutory eight-sec-ond ride, giving him $50,000 for the fi nal round and $54,300 overall.

By Alex BrowneNewly-re-elected South Surrey-White Rock-

Cloverdale MP Russ Hiebert is not expressing any disappointment at not receiving a post in Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s new cabinet.

B.C. MPs named to the cabinet Wednesday were James Moore (Port Moody-Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam), who retains his position as minister of Canadian heritage and languages; John Duncan (Vancouver Island North), who holds on to the renamed ministry of Aboriginal and Northern Aff airs; Al-ice Wong (Richmond) who was chosen minister of state for seniors; and Ed Fast (Abbotsford), picked as minister of inter-national trade.

But Hiebert, a staunch Conservative who far outstripped local competitors at the polls on May 2, said he abides by Harper’s choices.

“I look forward to serving in any ca-pacity I can,” Hiebert told Black Press. “Th e prime minister had a lot of hard decisions to make and he has a number of other highly qualifi ed candidates to consider. I trust his judgment.”

Hiebert said he is looking forward to the fi rst week Parliament is in session, aft er it re-opens June 2, when he expects committee assignments to be announced.

“Because the government is so eager to pass thebudget, that will probably happen fairly quickly,”Hiebert said.

Hiebert, who was fi rst elected in the riding in2004, has latterly served on the House of Commons

Finance Committee and the Interna-tional Human Rights Subcommittee.

He has previously been parliamen-tary secretary to the minister of Na-tional Defence, and also served on the standing committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics; and the Conservative Party task force onSafe Streets and Healthy Communi-ties.

He continues in roles as chair of the Canadian branch of the Com-monwealth Parliamentary Associa-tion, and as founder and co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary BorderCaucus.

Hiebert said that in his latter role hehas been heartened by announcements by Harperand US President Barack Obama that there will begreater co-operation in moving goods and peopleacross the border while still maintaining appropri-ate security levels for both nations.

“You know it’s going to get top priority when boththe prime minister and the president of the U.S. arespeaking about it,” said Hiebert, who noted that thePacifi c Highway border crossing is the largest in thewest.

Hiebert said that removing obstacles to traffi cbetween the two countries, through such initiativesas the Trusted Traveller and Nexus programs is ofcrucial economic importance to both.

“It’s very important to this community and to theLower Mainland,” he added.

“I think the Americans are beginning to wakeup to how important this is. A total of 36 states listCanada as their number one trading partner, andany delay at the border can end up costing thou-sands of dollars.”

A new school in Langley could help ease overcrowding in Clayton’s cramped Hazelgrove Elementary

Th e bizarre tale of Langley School District trying to get rid of a school site in an area that is bursting with children makes little sense.

Th ere is no question that a new school site is needed in the York-son neighbourhood, even with a new school now being built there. Th e new developments west of 208 Street will generate a large number of school children, and there is still much more de-velopable land in the vicinity.

To solve that problem, the dis-trict plans to swap a site it owns on 70 Avenue for another on 84 Avenue. Townhouses are now planned for the school site.

Th e trouble is, a school is also needed in the Routley area. Th ere are 500 school-aged chil-dren in the neighbourhood, and likely there will be more in the future, as land north of 72 Av-enue is developed.

Th e same scenario exists west of the 196 Street border in Surrey. Children in the new homes in

East Clayton, on both the north and south sides of the 72 Avenue corridor, also face severe crowd-ing in local schools.

Th e existing neighbourhood school, Hazelgrove, is probably the most overcrowded school in Surrey. Th at’s saying something, as Surrey is the prov-ince’s largest school district and the fast-est-growing one, by a long shot.

If common sense were to prevail, and artifi cial boundar-ies didn’t get in the way, the best solu-tion would be for the two school districts to jointly build a new elementary school which could service students in both Langley and Surrey.

Th at way, many students would not have to cross busy streets like 200 Street or 192 Street to get to school. Th ere would be more

than enough children in the area to keep a school full for years to come.

I don’t know if the Surrey School District owns a property in the area, but Langley still does at present — the property on 70 Avenue. Its sale is conditional

on rezoning being granted by Langley Township council.

Perhaps if the Langley board can’t make building the Routley school a top priority, a joint eff ort with Surrey could convince the minis-try of education that a school is needed now to serve both areas.

A school in Lan-gley which could handle some of the Surrey students who live to the immediate west would go a long way towards easing over-crowding at Hazelgrove. It would also ease overcrowding at Lang-

ley Meadows and R.C. GarnettElementaries.

Yes, it would cause some newchallenges in fi guring out exactlywho pays what portion of thecosts at the new school, but ul-timately, all funds for educationcome out of taxpayers’ pockets.Th e provincial government playsa bigger role in allocating educa-tion funds than it used to, so allthat is needed to make a newschool serving students in twodistricts happen is a little creativ-ity.

Th is is not simply a matter offairness for families who boughthomes in the area in good faith, knowing that a school wasplanned for the area. It is also amatter of ensuring that there is anew school in an area which is farfrom built out.

If a new school serving stu-dents of two districts can be builtsooner than one in each district, let’s consider doing so.– Frank Bucholtz is the editor of the Langley

Times.

Palmiere mournedHundreds turn out to remember the life of a beloved community member

By Krista Waddington JohnstonTh e Cloverdale Legion has seen

its share of crowds, but on SaturdayMay 7 it was fi lled to capacity to celebrate the life of longtime em-ployee and Cloverdale fi xture Jes-sie Palmiere. Jessie passed away April 24, 2011 aft er a brave and valiant fi ght with cancer.

With daughters Sandra and Tina, companion Larry MacGil-liard and grandchildren Demi, Keelan and Brady looking on, Jessie was remembered with love and laughs by her friends, family, customers, and anyone who had the good fortune to know her and her smile.

Jessie was born April 20, 1942 in Ituna, Saskatchewan amidst six sisters and four brothers. Be-ing the adventurous spirit she was, she left home at an early age and lived in Yorkton and Re-gina before landing in Calgary in 1967 where she met and married Frank Palmiere on Feb. 24, 1969. November of that year their fi rst daughter Sandra was born, fol-lowed by Tina in 1973 aft er their move to Vancouver.

By 1974 the family had moved to Langley, where Jessie helped es-tablish and co-chair the Nicomekl Elementary Parent Teacher As-sociation. As well as raising her girls, Jessie ran the PTA, assisted the local Block Watch, ran the school’s hot lunch program, and

worked tirelessly to raise funds for the school’s new gym, kitchen and playground. She also successfully lobbied Langley city hall for fund-ing for the school programs and equipment. Jessie’s can-do attitude was evident even back then: when something needed to be done she simply did it and moved on to the next thing.

Jessie was a superb hostess who took care of every detail when peo-ple came to visit. Jessie made sure that everyone had a place to stay, food in their bellies and smiles on their faces. She was remembered as being a fantastic cook, bringing

her famous perogies for anyone who requested a special treat. Her loving, thoughtful nature was of-ten expressed with a bag of pero-gies at the ready for anyone who asked.

Jessie was also an active and athletic lady. She bowled competi-tively in Langley and Cloverdale, though in 1975 she discovered she had a natural talent for soft ball. Her teammates from Th e Knights, Artisan, and Mom’s Kitchen (to name a few) remember her as a wicked third baseman until a car accident sidelined her from the hot corner. In typical “Jessie” fashion she defi ed the odds, not only walking against her doctor’s prediction, but returning to com-petitive play as a great pitcher. As expected, she was at the forefront of the fundraising until the team fi nally found a sponsor in her be-loved Cloverdale Legion Branch 6, where she became an irreplace-able member of the legion family for 32 years.

Soft ball was her sport of choice until she picked up a golf club and discovered yet another ath-letic passion. In fact, it was golf that brought her another blessing when she met Larry at a golf tour-nament in Quesnel in 1994. Th e two shared a passion for life, trav-elling and golfi ng throughout their

Lasers in Dentistry

*may be additional charges if specifi c x-rays or diagnostic models are requested.

Ask the Dentist!By Dr. Andrew Willoughby, DMD

Q: My wife recently had LASIK eye surgery to correct her vision; the ophthal-mologist commented they are now using LASERs in Dentistry to replace the needle and dental drill… Is this true, and if so, can the laser be used to com-plete a root canal?A: Yes, her eye doctor is correct. LASERs can now be used for both hard and soft tissue procedures in periodontal, restorative, surgical and endodontic ap-plications. Lasers can even be used to help complete root canal treatments – for instance a dental laser does not replace the fi ling and shaping of the root canal, but does help with sterilization of bacteria in the canal prior to the fi nal seal of the root fi lling. There are several types of LASERs being used in dentistry allowing many procedures to be done without injection anaesthesia or the use of a dental drill. Bleeding and postoperative infl ammation are also reduced with the use of den-tal lasers – especially the new Erbium hard and soft tissue lasers that allow the dentist to modulate power (milliJoules) and frequency (Hertz) of the LASER light energy. The word LASER stands for Light Amplifi cation Stimulated Emission Radia-tion. Dental LASERs utilize a non-ionizing, invisible light source in the near to mid infrared electromagnetic spectrum. Dental LASERs are gaining popularity because they are more conservative – in essence it is micro-dentistry, which treats one cell layer at a time. Using LASERs you create a secondary wound not a primary wound, sealing the lymphatic and nerve endings creating less postoperative infl ammation and discomfort. Dental LASER light therapy re-duces cross contamination and bacterial infections and at low level settings can be used to bio-modulate tissue and stimulate healing. With the new Hoya Versawave Erbium:YAG lasers there is now a proven anaesthetic effect, which allows most fi llings to be performed without the need for injection anaesthesia – in other words NO NEEDLES! DOES THE LASER IMPROVE HEALING? Absolutely. The very nature of LASER light energy virtually eliminates heat at the surgical site causing less infl amma-tion and pain. The LASERs unique ability to remove the smear layer on tissue causes less infl ammatory response, which allows the body to begin healing immediately – without delay.IS THE LASER PAINFUL AND WILL IT HURT AFTERWARDS? NO, LASER pro-cedures are not painful. LASERs are less invasive and more conservative than a typical scalpel blade so reduced physical damage to surrounding tissue results in less infl ammation and markedly less postoperative pain and discomfort.DOES A DENTAL LASER PROCEDURE COST ANY MORE? No. The cost of a LA-SER generated fi lling or soft tissue procedure is NO different than the cost of the same procedure done with a dental drill or scalpel blade. However, when the LASER is utilized there is typically no needle required, or numb lip to deal with meaning less time spent in the doctor’s offi ce and appointments are shorter. I personally had soft tissue surgery done to the inside of my upper lip with a LASER – without any freezing whatsoever. I can say with total confi dence that LASERs work extremely well. If you are interested in LASER dentistry please don’t hesitate to call and book a FREE consultation in our offi ce.

years together. With her children, grandchildren and Larry, Jessie’s life was just as she wanted: complete.

Aft er her cancer diag-nosis in October 2008 she continued to work during her treatments, never complaining ex-cept to express her an-noyance that it kept her from doing all she want-ed to do.

She faced her illness with her trademark strength and fortitude, yet her warmth and lov-ing nature were never diminished.

Four days aft er a very special birthday celebra-tion, Jessie passed away in the early morning of April 24, Easter Sunday.

As mentioned in her eulogy, the day seemed appropriate as an ex-traordinary lady left us on an extraordinary day. Th e very best of her remains in Sandra and Tina, both of whom share her kindness, en-ergy and loving spirit.

Th e Palmiere fam-ily would like to express their gratitude to every-one for their help and support. Jessie’s family and friends meant the world to her, and it was clear from the turnout on Saturday that the feel-ing was mutual.

–The family would like to thank Krista Waddington

Johnston for helping Tina and Sandra.

NEWS from the Chamber of Commerce

What a great Rodeo! A huge thank you to the many volunteers who made this years’ event such a great success.

The parade saw a record number of entries and despite the weather, a good number of spectators (who

received a lot of sweets). The Chili cook off has a new

champion as LTS beat out all others with their secret creation. The decorated bike parade had over 100 entries and some very original bikes.

June is an important month for the

Chamber as we look to increase our membership and serve the businesses that we represent. Please join the Chamber and get involved in our community as together we are a much stronger voice for business.

IMPROVE THE WELL-BEING THAT FLOWS INTO YOUR LIFE BY MAKING IT YOUR DAILY FOCUS. THINK HEALTHY THOUGHTS!

A combination of Benfothia-mine, Methylcobalamin, and DHA is probably the most effective formula for preventing and treat-ing neuropathies. This combina-tion is highly recommended for diabetics as they are the most susceptible to neuropathies.

People with sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome or other nerve pains, people with involuntary movements as from Restless leg syndrome or Parkinsonism, and people with frequent cramps will fi nd their symptoms improve with these supplements. People with history of shingles or severe injuries, fast food consum-ers, chronic alcoholics and smokers should all take these supplements to prevent nerve pains and neuropathies.

Our nervous system is divided into the “central” nervous system consisting of the brain and spinal cord, and the “peripheral” nervous system consisting of nerves that run all over our bodies and limbs. Central neurop-athy happens in dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinsonism, etc.

Peripheral nerve neuropathy may result from poorly controlled diabetes, drugs, alcoholism, vitamin defi ciencies includ-ing B1, B12 and Folates, chemical or heavy metal poisoning, nerve entrapment or injury, infections including herpes, auto-immune diseases, etc. Symptoms include numbness, abnormal sensations, uncontrolled move-ments, cramps or paralysis. As a result of the loss of sensations, fi nger tips and toes may easily get injured and infected, resulting in gangrene. Prevention and treatment of course depend on the cause. Diabetics should have their blood sugar level needs monitored and controlled. Chemicals, toxic fumes, drugs, cigarettes, alcohol and injuries need to be

avoided. Nerve entrapments due to a narrowed spinal disc, carpal tunnel and other skel-etal derangements need to be corrected by surgery or ma-nipulation. Nutrition support to build up a strong protective sheath for the nerve fi bres and nerve cells is essential no mat-ter the cause.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) has always been recognised as an important nu-trient for nerve support but adequate blood level cannot be maintained by taking the usual form of thiamine. This is because thia-mine, being water soluble, is being excreted by the kidneys soon after ingestion so con-stantly high serum levels of thiamine that is required for nerve repair cannot be achieved with ingestion of simple thiamine.

Fortunately, nowadays there is a special form of thiamine called Benfo-thiamine that is fat soluble and hence escapes elimination by the kidneys. Benfothiamine can be taken orally to achieve sustained and higher levels of serum thiamine.

Another important vitamin essential for nerve maintenance is Vitamin B12. The common form of B12, Cyanocobala-min, is diffi cult to absorb via the intes-tinal tract, hence injections are often required for higher serum levels. Also, Cyanocobalaimine needs to be convert-ed by the body to Methylcobalamine before it is biologically active. As we age our ability to do this conversion deteriorates. Fortunately, B12 is now available in the form of Methylcobala-mine. Methylcobalamine is not only well absorbed but it does not require further conversion. So, when you are

shopping for a vitamin B12, try to fi nd one that contains Methylcobalamine.

Another important nutrient for nerve sup-port is DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid). This is found in omega oil supplements like fi sh oil, squib oil, seal oil, etc. For nerve support purposes, DHA needs to be in a higher pro-portion than the EPA that co-exists in these oil preparations. So if you want an Omega oil that is specifi c for nerves, get one that contains predominantly DHA.
