Ole Miss vs. Fresno State

Sept. 25, 2010

Vaught-Hemingway Stadium

Ole Miss Player Quotes

Running Back Jeff Scott

(On the team’s 425 yard rushing performance) The offensive line did an awesome job; they’re still young. They have a lot to learn. They missed a few

assignments, but we still stepped up and made big plays. All the running backs have stepped up,

Enrique, me, Rodney Scott, Brandon Bolden, we did our thing.

(On what the win against Fresno State means to the team)

This win means a lot. We came into this game 0-2 at home, and we couldn’t go out there and lose the

game, so it was a must win, we had to go out and win, we had to.

Running Back Enrique Davis

(On team’s rushing performance)

We’ve been working hard this whole week, running the ball and feeling good as a whole team. We knew

how good of a team they were and how good of a defense they had, and we wanted to be able to run theball today.

(On what the win meant to them as a team)

It’s a win that we had to go ahead and get to get started again, and we look forward to many more.

Linebacker Allen Walker

(On the defense)

I think we played real well, but I think there were some things that we have to improve in. We lost Lockett

tonight; obviously he’s a great player, so we have to have the freshman step up. But overall I think we did

well. A victory’s a victory.

(On playing defense when the offense scores 55 points)It makes it so much easier, they were eating up the clock, so we weren’t on the field as long so we had

time to rest and we could come out and get those three and outs when we need them.

(On the crowd)

It helped a lot. We feed off of that. Without the crowd, none of this would be possible. They do a lot for

us. When they chant Hotty Toddy and play the music they get hyped and it gets me hyped and all of us

hyped.

Safety Damien Jackson:

(On the defense)

In the first half we played some good football, we had a couple mistakes but we played some good

football. We could play better though, 38 points is really not us, I promise we could play better than that.

Later, it seemed like we let a couple big plays happen, Coach Nix emphasizes not letting the big plays

happen, so we’ll get that fixed. We’re better than 38 points.

Ole Miss v. Fresno StateSeptember 25, 2010

Vaught-Hemingway Stadium

Fresno State Head Coach Pat Hill

Opening Comments:

“I knew we were going to run into a highly inspired team. They have really good personnel. Theirdefense did a very good job against us on the run. Ryan Colburn did very well for us. The passing gamewas clicking for us very well. You have to give Mississippi’s defensive line credit against the run. Ithought they played very well. Offensively, we had a couple scoring opportunities we let get away. Therewas a major penalty on a first down, and those are the kind of plays you can’t have. We gave up a puntreturn tonight. I thought we got beat in the kicking game for the first time this season. We weren’t reallyable to change field positions on the kicking game like we had the last couple weeks. Our defense playedvery well in segments, but we gave up some huge plays. I think when we look at the film, a lot of it isgoing to be able assignment responsibility and we just need to tighten that up. I appreciate the way ourplayers played. They never quit. People will ask why we went down and tried to kick a field goal at theend of the game, but we had 35 seconds left and we wanted to get it in field goal range. We had a badsnap, a bad hold, and a bad kick. We didn’t move the ball well to get into field goal range. We were

down 41-10 at one point and I really challenged the players during a time out to respond. They neverstopped fighting. That was a tough environment tonight. I think Mississippi has really good talent.Hopefully this is a big rebound for them. We have three home games in a row, which is nice. We need togo back to the drawing board and make sure we’re assignment perfect on defense. If we look at ourmistakes and grow from it, I think we have a chance to be a very good football team.”

On motivating the players down 41-10:

“Down 41-10 there are a lot of teams that can fold. I challenged them to start this game at 0-0 and let’swin the remainder of the game. We were still in the middle of the third quarter, and I think theyresponded. We got it within ten and missed the onside kick. I thought we battled back well from beingdown 31 points. Our two minute offense worked well tonight when we needed it to.”

On the run defense and Ole Miss players:

“We played a lot of option really well tonight. Maybe four or five plays accounted for 250 yards. If you’regoing to be a solid defense, which I believe we can be, you have to be perfect. The last three weeks wehave seen good quarter backs. Masoli is good and so is Brandon Bolden. They have some really goodplayers. We don’t get another chance at them for another year, but we look forward to them coming toFresno.”

OLE MISS VS. FRESNO STATE September 25, 2010 Postgame Quotes

Fresno State Players DE Chris Carter What  was going through the defense’s mind  throughout  the game?

We  just gave up some big plays at the wrong times.  You don’t want to blame bad officiating, but if  you give up big

plays you can’t win like that.

Run defense seemed  to be a  problem what  do you think?

We  just had to cancel some gaps, our eyes got a little too big sometimes. We are  just going to have to get back into

the film room tomorrow and work on that issue. It’s kind of  hard to work on that issue right after the game.  It’s

the gap.  Sometimes your eyes  just get a little too wide and it slows down and triggers some reactions. As a

defense we didn’t trigger the way we needed to, and that is not common of  our defense at all.

On new  defense:

You’re going to hit some bumps anytime and some obstacles.  This is a big one and we need to see how we are

going to rebound from it as a defense and a team. Our offense was on beat tonight.  I can really say a lot about

them.  You have to give them all the credit in the world.  We  just have to come back and starting tomorrow get in

there focus and get ready for Cal‐Poly.  We have to learn something from it and move on.

Anything on Ole Miss offense you didn’t  expect?

They ran pistol, which they haven’t run a lot.  I’m not saying we didn’t expect it. We made some adjustments and

stopped it a few times.  Then a few times we were out of  assignment. The big thing about this game is it  just

slipped out of  our hands. When we needed to stop them we didn’t do it. They have been having a rough season

early. I know as a defense we are better than that. We need to show up on that and we can’t let that be a problem.

Ryan Colburn, QB

On game as a whole:

“I think anytime you come into somebody else’s home, they are a hungry football team. You have to play your best

football, and we did not do that tonight. We knew we were going to get their best shot but bottom line is we shot

ourselves in the foot too many times.”

Ole Miss defense on  passing game:

“They did a good  job of  mixing things up. There were some specific coverages I knew they were going to play, but

in our passing game we did a pretty good  job of  taking what they gave us.”

Coach’s talk  at  41‐10 timeout:

“We got into too much of  a hole too early but I love the way we battled back. This team has no quit button. When

coach pulled us in at 41‐10 he told us that it is a 0‐0 ballgame from here on out, and I think we responded well to

that.”
