9th Grade Electives

SHHS offers elective classes in the areas of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Career and Technical Education. This guide includes descriptions of the elective courses available to freshmen. Depending on your individual schedule, you will be able to take 2 or 3 electives next year.

There is a variety of reasons you may not get the elective class you pick, so it is important for you to choose 3 electives and 3 alternates. If you pick a class that doesn’t work for your schedule or one that we end up not being able to offer, we will know what other class you would want to take in its place.

Read through the elective course descriptions carefully before you pick your electives. If you have a question about a specific elective, email the teacher by using the email address provided.

9th Grade Fine Arts Electives

Music Theory: Open to any student that loves to study music. You do not have to be in band. The class provides students with an understanding of the fundamentals of music: composition, arranging, analysis, and development. For more information, email Mr. Evans: [email protected]

Theatre I: In Theatre, you are NEVER by yourself. You are always with a group

performing. We play lots of Theatre Games. Don't be scared - it's actually a lot of fun. If you don't like to act, we also study Tech Theatre (Scenic Design, Costumes, Lights, etc.) This beginning course in theatre introduces the student to the performance and nonperformance aspects of theatre. Students study: theatre basics, acting techniques, pantomimes, improvisations, voice and diction, Reader’s Theatre, Theatre History/genres, Technical Theatre, etc. The majority ofperformances and classroom activities involve peer or group work. This enables students to set personal goals and build self-confidence. Check out our link (under Clubs) on the SHHS website.

For more information, contact Mrs. Burns [email protected]

Band: If you are going to take Band next year, you should choose Band for both the 1st and 2nd elective classes . One semester of marching band substitutes for the PE (.5) graduation requirement. You should already be in contact with Mr. Evens and Mr. Wittstruck about joining band next year. If

you are not, email either band director for more information. [email protected] [email protected]

9th Grade Fine Arts Electives

Visual Arts is NOT AVAILABLE to 9th graders.

However, if you are a serious art student that plans to be on track to take AP Art your senior year, you may be considered to take Art I in the 9th grade. To do this, you need to submit a portfolio to Mrs. Lamb. Email her at [email protected] for more information. She will let us know whether to put it on your schedule or not, however, you should type in “submitting a portfolio to be considered for Art I” in the notes section of your course request form.

•French I: French is the only foreign language open to 9th

graders. It is a good language to study if you are interested in travel throughout the globe as an adult as it is the only language other than English to be spoken on all continents of the world and because so many English words are of French origin, taking French has the added bonus of helping expand English vocabulary.

•Spanish I is NOT AVAILABLE to 9th graders. If you want to take Spanish, you will need to wait until your 10th grade year.

Physical Education Electives

Even though you are taking your PE/Health Wellness or JROTC class this year, that doesn’t mean you can’t sign up for a second PE class. If you want to take an additional PE, we will try to get it scheduled on the day opposite of your Health Wellness or JROTC class.

PE I- This is a basic semester long PE class for 9-12th grades. You can take the class as often as you like throughout high school.

PE II- Weightlifting. Only open to 9th grade students that are football.

Career and Technical Education

(CTE) Electives

CTE courses can only serve 25 students each class period, so just because you pick one of these, doesn’t mean you will get your top choice this year. This is why we have you pick 3 electives and 3 alternates. If you don’t get in a class you wanted this year, don’t worry! You will be able to take up to 5 electives your 10th grade year!

If you start an elective this year and find out that you don’t like it after all, that’s a good thing! You learned something about yourself and what you might not want to do as a future career. However, you still have to see the course through. You cannot ask to change a class that you picked once the school year has started.
