HOW GRADES WORK IN HIGH SCHOOL
We are on the semester system. ➔ You will receive a grade report at the quarter and the
semester. ➔ Progress reports are issued only if earning a D or F.
• This helps you keep track of how you’re doing in EACH class on a regular basis

HOW GRADES TURN INTO CREDITS
○TRANSCRIPT: ■The permanent record of the courses you’ve taken, the
grades you’ve earned and your progress towards graduation.
■The grades you receive at the end of each semester are the ones that go on your transcript and give you credit.
■Progress Reports and Quarter Grades do not go on your transcript.
HOW GRADES TURN INTO CREDITS
• CREDITS:
• “Points” you receive for each class you pass with
a D or higher
• One semester class = 5 credits
• Full Year of one class = 10 credits
• If you receive an F in a core academic course,
you will need to recover the class.
For a High School DIPLOMA, you need 230 credits by the end
of senior year!
GRADES AND GPA
GPA = Grade Point Average
• Starts your first semester of high school (now!) and
goes until the second semester of senior year
(graduation!)
• GPA is based on a value that each grade earns each
semester:
• A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0
• Weighted Grades have added value and are notated
by + on transcript (AP and some Honors classes)
• A = 5, B = 4, C = 3
Total Points of all 6 classes GPA = # of Classes
(6)
GRADES AND GPA
• Class Rank: compares a student’s
grades to those of their
classmates
Decile Rank: Percentage ranking
▪ Decile 1 = Top 10 % of class
▪ Decile 2 = Top 20 % of class
▪ etc
THINK, PAIR, SHARE
LOOK OVER THESE GPA EXAMPLES, AND TELL
US WHAT YOU THINK:
• Straight As = ___ GPA?
• 2.5 GPA = what kind of grades?
• What value does an F have on your GPA?
• Decile 4 = ____% of class
