“Water, water, everywhere, Nor any
drop to drink….”
The above lines from a poem by Samuel T. Coleridge
seem so relevant today!
Now the big question is - “Can salty
water be consumed for drinking?”
Can we drink and consume salt water
regularly?
Consumption of salty or seawater in small
quantities and not regularly is not considered
harmful. It is just that it doesn’t quench the
thirst. It makes one feel thirstier!
The regular consumption of the saline water, in
the long run, is known to cause fatal seizures,
heart arrhythmias, and possible multiple-organs
failure.
Seawater Desalination
An ideal solution for the need of the hour!
To procure fresh water fit for consumption of
living beings seawater desalination is the best
solution today. W.H.O. recommends the
Seawater desalination Reverse Osmosis
(SWRO) process as the most ideal amongst
all, besides using standardized and
prescribed water treatment chemicals for
desalination and purification of the saline
water.
The Seawater desalination Reverse
Osmosis (SWRO) process
During the desalination process the water
undergoes a widespread pre-treatment
process before the actual SWRO process,
in which the fresh water is separated from
the saline seawater. The post-treatment
process of the fresh water removes the
harmful bacteria, viruses, and the cists
and hence making the fresh water
absolutely clean and pure – much
consumable for the living beings.
The Pre-Treatment process
The saline water undergoes
decontamination process for the removal of
solids, rubbles and other such fragments
present in the water. A number of
condensation, oxidizing agents, and certain
other water treatment chemicals are
added into the fresh water for the organic
matter and algae forms to coagulate
together and hence be easily removed in
the next pre-treatment process stage.
The SWRO process
In this process, the pre-treated saline water is
forced through semi-permeable sheaths with the
help of high pressure pumps and the fresh water
gets separated from the seawater hence.
Trivia fact: The filtration process success is credited to
the sheaths or the semi-permeable membranes which
have the pores in the size of one hundred thousand
times tinier than the human hair in diameter!
The Post-treatment process
Post the SWRO process, the water quality
is further improved with more water
treatment chemicals so that the odor
and color get better and also the pH
balance gets adjusted. Finally, the ultra-
violet exposure ensures the removal of
harmful viruses and bacteria present in
the water. For the stabilization of the
water meant for storage, pre-quantified
Chlorine is then added to the fresh water.
