• Which vaccines are available?Vaccines recommended for babies, children,adolescents and adults on the National ImmunisationProgram (NIP)* are available at no cost to people witha current Medicare Card. Other vaccines arerecommended and are available for a fee.

• Do I need to book?All of our clinics are walk-in clinics and appointmentsare not necessary. However, if you would like avaccine that is not at scheduled point (as per the NIP)*,there may be a fee involved and we ask that youpre-book on 8229 9999 to ensure availability of thevaccine(s) on the day.

• What if I can’t remember which vaccinations I’vealready had?The Council keeps a record of all vaccinationsadministered through our services. A history ofvaccinations given in Australia should also beavailable on the Australian Immunisation Register(AIR), which can be accessed online through theDepartment of Human Services web page myGov/Medicare portal. For further queries or if youexperience difficulties please contact Council.

• What should I bring?Please bring your child’s Personal Health Record Book(blue book), Medicare Card and immunisationhistory/record cards or correspondence.

IMMUNISATION: GET THE FACTS!Since the introduction of vaccination for children in Australia in 1932, deaths from vaccine-preventable diseases have fallen by 99 per cent, despite a threefold increase in the Australian population over that period. Worldwide, it has been estimated that immunisation programs prevent approximately three million deaths each year. Ref: www.health.gov.au April 2018

• Vaccines will help keep you healthy. The City of Holdfast Bay recommends vaccinations throughout life to protect against many infections. When you skip vaccines you leave yourself vulnerable to illnesses such as pnuemococcal, influenza, whooping cough and other vaccine preventable diseases.

• Vaccines are safe. All vaccines registered in Australia by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) are evaluated to ensure they are effective, comply with strict manufacturing and production standards, and have a strong safety record. It can take up to 10 years for a vaccine to be approved for use. Vaccines are among the safest products in all of medicine.

• Vaccines won’t give you the disease they are designed to prevent. You cannot “catch” the disease from the vaccine. Some vaccines contain “killed” virus, and it is impossible to get the disease from them. Others have live, but weakened, viruses designed to ensure that you cannot catch the disease.

• When you get sick, those around you are at risk too. A vaccine-preventable disease that might make a healthy adult sick for a week or two, could prove deadly for children and the elderly if it spreads to them. When you get vaccinated, you’re protecting yourself, your family and the community.

• Vaccines are as important to your overall health as diet and exercise. Like eating healthy foods, exercising, and getting regular check-ups, vaccines play a vital rolein keeping you healthy. Vaccines are one of the most effective and safest preventive care measures available.
