I didn’t curate my personal French style onshopping trips to Parisand Provence. I didn’tship it in crates acrossthe ocean. Instead, Ideveloped it throughcareful perusal of yardsales, thrift stores,antique malls and auctions.

As an antiques dealerand design enthusiast, I’ve learned over the yearsthat French style is somuch more than acquiring an importedbergère. Fortunately fordo-it-yourself fans andthrift shoppers who can’t voyage across the Atlantic,the elements of Frenchstyle are easy to translate.

COLORWhile there isn’t onecolor combination thatdefines French style,there are a few palettesthat immediately standout as quintessential.

Soft blues, whites,grays and creams conjurequiet French refinery inwashed-out monochrome.A room in need of awarmer touch can benefitfrom the sun-kissedprovincial scheme of richreds, sunny yellows andterra cotta.

FABRICAs a young newlywed, I had almost weekly dateswith the remnant bins atthe local fabric store. Iquickly began to gravitatetoward toiles, ticking andother unique French-inspired fabrics.

Some people choose atoile and enthusiasticallycover the walls, bed andfurniture, but I prefer amore subtle approach.Boldly printed fabricscommand more attentionwhen used as accents ina few key places.

OVERALLYour choices of furniture,fabrics, accessories, colors and texturesshould evoke a feelingthat both very familiarand very French.

THE SCENTOF INSPIRATION

HARVEST FRESH LAVENDER TO ADD A CHARMING QUALITY TO YOUR HOME OR GARDEN.

LAVENDER IS MYFAVORITE OF ALLSCENTS. I love it fresh when theplants are in bloom and as it driesaround the garden. I use it insachets tucked into my pillow atnight, or as bath salts to soak awaythe aches of the gardening day. Thismagical herb is said to promoterelaxation, relieve stress, and evensoothe an achy head. Not to mention that the bees love it just asmuch as I do.

Lavender is commonly groupedinto two species: English lavender(Lavandula angustifolia) with delicate flowers and long stems,and Spanish lavender (Lavandulastoechas) with its showy hat ofbracts on a perennial shrub. I growa few ornamental Spanish lavenderplants, but only English lavenderavails itself to year-round use.

The best time to harvest Englishlavender is when the buds haveformed on the plant but the flowershave not yet opened.

Lavender harvested at this time of year will fall off the stems moreeasily when dry, making it easier to collect. It will also retain fragrance and color longer at thisstage. The cultivar of your lavender may also contribute todetermining the plants’ fragrance,color and longevity.

To harvest your lavender, take a

sharp bypass pruner and gather a

small handful of long flower stems.

Snip them at the base and continue collecting stems in yourhand until you have a nice-sizedbundle. Secure the bundle withtwine, and continue until the plantis fully harvested.

Pruning the plants like this willkeep the shrub tidy and greenthrough colder weather. It is best toprune the plants each summer tomaintain a controlled shape andget the most of your harvest.

To dry bunches, hang them in a

warm, dry spot out of direct

sunlight. Ideal places to hang yourbundles are: Under the eaves ofyour home, in the garage or a protected spot in the garden. Ifound an old painting ladder thatworks perfectly as a hanging rackin my yard. In previous years, I havedried them along a shady fenceand made them into a wreath.

Adorn your home with drying

lavender to make it smell heavenly.

After the bundles have fully dried,typically two to four weeks, you canshake or gently rub the flower budsinto a tray or bowl. Store lavenderin a lidded jar in a cool dark placeand repeat next year.

Once you’ve collected your bountyof fresh herbs, try incorporatinglavender into your everyday craftprojects, along with anywhere elseyou could use a pretty bud or alovely scent.

AS THE CREATOROF THE POPULARBLOG “FRENCHCOUNTRYCOTTAGE,” Courtney surrounds herself withFrench style with a decidedly vintage twist. Herposts on lifestyle, décor,do-it-yourself projects andrenovations on her 1940scottage inspire readers withromantic color schemesand clever ideas.

Courtney wanted a lined,heavy curtain for her guestbedroom. Her previous curtains weren’t blockingenough light and their lightcolor was leaving some-thing to be desired. With alove for vintage upholsteryand fabric, specifically floral ticking fabrics withsoft colors, stripes and delicate flowers, she decided to combine theexisting panels with a printshe loved.

“I found the fabric forthese drapes and instantlyimagined them as panelswith a pretty fringe to addthat touch of drama,”Courtney says.

She took down the lightweight curtains andturned to a set of clearancedraperies she had purchaseda few years before. Trimmingthe fabric to size and pinningin it place, Courtney sewed afolded edge of the fabric alongthe edge of the trim.

“I simply sewed the newfabric to each of the existingpanels and left the fringealong the edges.”

A bon vivant is someone who liveswell. This does not imply a person isnecessarily wealthy, but rather onewho is at ease and enjoys day-to-daylife; enjoying good food, wine and company. It is about allowing yourinner child to take hold, to let the perfume carry you, the pastry shopslure you, the history speak to you. It isthe ability to have passion for the smallthings that make the whole picturethen dive in where you are and enjoy it.

Just because my husband is Frenchand his family has lived in France forgenerations does not mean that I immediately grasped the subtle differences between our cultures. Ittook time to blend them into a happymedium. The brocante taught me mosteverything I know about France. Thatsounds sweeping, and perhaps a bitsilly, but it is true. I learned to speakFrench at the brocante because I waspassionate about old things, I wantedto understand the things that attractedme, where they came from, how oldthey were. They had stories, and thosestories spoke to me.

It uses color to invitepeace, creativity and rest. This is thehome of Enrica Stabile, known as“Pantasina,” in Liguria, France.

Enrica used local materials, suchas slate and marble, in Pantasina’sdesign. She demonstrates her love of balance—combining the exquisite and the ordinary—bybringing traditional pieces and heirlooms together with more decorative art pieces. Busts, portraitsand painted plates complement simple wood furniture and scatteredcoastal accents.

Enrica owns her own design store,L’Utile e il Dilettevole (The Useful andEnjoyable), which seeks to combineseeming opposites into a creativegetaway for the soul.

Entering the house feels as though you have beenmagically transported back in time to the Frenchprovincial age.

The foyer presents a neutral color scheme andshowcases decorative family heirlooms, such as formal portraits and painted plates.

“The house has been furnished by retrieving andadapting old family furniture together with someunsold pieces from her store,” says stylist Alessandra Ianniello.

JAMIE JEEVES ALWAYSDREAMED OF FINDING THEPERFECT VACATION HOME.

During a brief visit to the village ofFontevielle, he fell in love with thehotel where he stayed: a ten-room,1740s French townhouse.

The house had fallen into disrepairover the years, and Jamie knew that it would take grit to restore. Hehauled away rubble, stripped out the plumbing, replaced doors and restructured the kitchen. As he power-washed the exterior and pulled

up the carpets that hid the originaltile, the house’s ancient charm beganto reawaken.

Now, the dilapidated hotel has beentransformed into a beautiful six-bedroom family vacation home.

Jamie enlisted his mother, Sallie, formuch of the renovation and design.A former antiques dealer and decorator, Sallie had several houserestorations under her belt. Jamiecredits his mother’s knowledge ofrefurbishment trades for the impressive turnaround of the project.

5 WAYSto achieve

RELAXED ELEGANCE1. Stay Soft. Refined taste doesn’t have to

mean stiff. Sallie recommends the use of plainwhite cotton on beds and slipcovers; it washes easily and adds a modern flair.

2. Mix and Match. An eclectic grouping ofconversation pieces reflects all of the

different personalities that will gather in yourhome. Whenever possible, choose

decorations with a story behind them.

3. Lighten Up. Jamie and Sallie’s neutralpalette keeps the home from feeling

confining. Layering whites and tans with curtains and bookshelves brings a sense of

over-arching calm and harmony over theassorted furniture and knickknacks.

4. Be Open-Minded. Jamie took care to simplify the layout of the home. No longer asmall hotel with confined spaces, the house

stretches on and invites the eye to gaze as faras it wishes. French windows continue the

open feel right out into the courtyard.

5. Leave Room to Grow. Bringing the outsideinside will keep your home from feeling

stuffy, even in cold weather. Choose a fewpotted plants with enough personality to

balance more subdued decor.

“In the end, it took two years, butit would have been much longerwithout her help,” Jamie says.

Jamie and Sallie evoked abreezy, playful mood in the homeby working from a light, airypalette. They replaced the darktiles on the ground floor withJerusalem tiles that coordinatewith the light stone walls.

Relying on neutral tones andsimple materials allowed Jamie torestore the elegance of the homewhile still keeping to his budget.Jamie stretched huis budget bychoosing simple white tiles for thebathrooms “It would have cost afortune to put in marble, and thedifference is minimal.”

He also used the leftover tiles tomake the bright, modern-feelingkitchen countertops.

Most of the furniture in the housewas collected by the family overyears of travels. Chairs and sofasfrom England blend effortlessly withSpanish classics and Frenchantiques. The vintage pieces stunningly contrast with the lightdecor and white-painted wood.

Sallie often finds old chandeliers,lamps, china and art in her travels,which she uses to add to the comfortable, rustic look. She madeall of the curtains in the housefrom old linen sheets and quilts,and turns scraps of old fabric intocushions and seat covers.

“It’s most interesting to me touse a mix of textiles rather than totry to match everything perfectlylike a hotel,” she says.

The climate in southern Francevaries greatly from summer towinter, and Jamie was sure to renovate the fireplaces in additionto adding electric heating. Sallie isfond of the new kitchen terrace.

“Even in the winter the sunwarms that space enough to havelunch outside,” Sallie says.

In the heat of the summer, thefront courtyard stays shady andwelcoming, giving the family thechance to relax in the fresh airyear-round.

Jamie created a relaxed, family-friendly and unpretentious home.“A holiday home should put you atease,” he says. “My wife and Ihave two young children, and wedon’t want to spend our holidaysworrying about breakables or fingerprints. Life is too short!”

THE SEEMINGLY MAGICAL ATMOSPHEREof Provence sets the stage for interior designer Enrica Stabile’ssummer home. The atmosphere isunlike anywhere else, where sun-shine, nostalgic colors, classic per-fumes and picturesque landscapescombine. Here began many greatarchitectural traditions, whererural buildings became icons, suchas the mas (provincial farmhouse)and the bastide (small town).

While traveling throughProvence on her way to Avignon,Enrica saw a mas and immediatelyfell in love. According to aninscription on a garden sundial,the home was built in 1860.

Enrica describes the home asbeing a derelict, poor thing whenshe first laid eyes on the now-restored provincial farmhouse.

“It was falling down enough tolook ugly, though it also lookedbeautiful; I would say it had aninterior beauty.

Against my family’s will, I decidedit would become our summer house,”Enrica says.

That first summer in the homefound the family with few furnishingsand much work to be done.

“At first, there where just fourgarden tables that we moved in andout of the house, depending on whatwe needed to do,” Enrica says.

In the meantime, the restorationworks went forward. The roof wasextensively repaired and the roomswere restored. One after another,new spaces were created by tearingdown the home’s old, tired walls.Two living rooms were added, onewith portraits of women on the walls,the other with portraits of men.

What was once the barn wastransformed to become the kitchen,highlighting the ancient beams. Thetool shed was given new life as averanda, and the winter gardenbecame Enrica’s daughter’s bedroom.

“In here, everything representsme,” Enrica says.

Though the interior received muchattention, the exterior was anythingbut forgotten. The windows on thefront of the house were restored andset in a row, and the façade wasrefinished and freshly painted inoriginal, period-appropriate colors.Bit by bit, the home found new life.

“Nothing was left to chance,”Enrica says. “The whole interventionwas planned following a precise ruleof mine: creating an enfilade, a seriesof rooms one after the other, so thatfrom the east you could see to thewest without breaking continuity.”

Each and every detail of the homehas been carefully thought out.Paintings, antique Turkish sinks,Victorian tiles in the kitchen andOccitan furniture combine for anexquisitely beautiful design.

at once both earthy and elegant. The bright color

pops are offset by the soft, down-home accents.

DECADENTSPINACHQUICHEServes 6-8 Preheat oven to 400°, then 350°Cook time: 1 hour and 15 minutes

Ingredients:• 2, 9-inch pastry pie crusts, unbaked• 1 lb. Swiss cheese, shredded• 2, 10 oz. packages frozen spinach • 1 cup milk• 1 tablespoon dried onion• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce• ¼ teaspoon salt• ¼ teaspoon pepper• ½ teaspoon powdered mustard• 6 eggs lightly beaten• Dash of cayenne pepper• Dash of nutmeg• Parmesan cheese, for topping

Cook frozen spinach and drain excesswater, pushing with a spoon.

Place spinach in the bottom of pieshells and sprinkle dried onion on top.

Shred cheese and sprinkle over onionsand spinach.

Mix together eggs, milk,Worcestershire, salt, pepper, powderedmustard, cayenne, and nutmeg.

Pour mixture into each pie and sprinkleParmesan cheese over the tops.

Place on a cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil and bake at 400° for 15minutes to set. Then reduce heat to350° and bake for one hour.

Tip: This dish goes wonderfully withsliced melon on the side.

BROOKE GIANNETTIFELL IN LOVE WITHFRENCH STYLE duringher first trip to Paris. Sheadored the leather clubchairs, the collections ofbooks and the paintedfurniture. As she and herhusband Steve perused theFrench flea markets, theybegan to hone in on aspecific genre of age-wornpiece that they saw often.Upon realizing that thisstyle lacked a label, theydecided to invent their own,and Patina Style was born.

“Patina” as a term refersto the sheen that developson wood, metals and othermaterials as they age, whichperfectly reflects Brookeand Steve’s goal in theircollaborative quest foritems. “We noticed thatEuropean interiors weren’tabout perfection,” Brookeobserves. “Their furniturepieces were handed downfrom generation togeneration.” The naturalmaterials used in craftingmany of the pieces, theydiscovered, aged beautifullywith use over time.

The characteristics of Patina style piecesvary, but in general boil down to threequalifying aspects. The piece must be madefrom natural materials—whether leather,wood, stone, metal or linen. Its proportionsmust be beautiful and graceful, rather thanstout or bulky. And finally, the colors of thepiece must be inspired by nature. Together,this combination evokes the light yet

weathered character that gives the stylesuch a high level of visual interest.

Brooke says that she generally goesshopping with the goal of finding a specificitem, “but I can change my mind if I findan amazing piece.”

Once, while searching for a buffet for aclient’s dining room, Brooke and Stevestumbled upon a gorgeous draper’s table.

Brooke’s best advice toaspiring designers is to begin toplan a room by imagining whatwill happen in that space. Is ita cozy room for just the familyto watch television or read? Isit a place for entertaining largegroups of friends?

From this foundation,building a unique style for thatspace will feel natural andresult in a comfortable,personalized finished product.

“Every room in the house,”Brooke says, “should start withthe dream of the future life inthat room.”

“I feel it is important to keepyour interior fresh,” Carolynsays. “Anyone can do this,and you don’t even haveto go to France.”
