FRENCH OPEN•In 1981 the first French championship for tennis was held and the very first winner was H . Briggs.•This championship was for men only, it was also only held for French residents.•The first womens tournament was held in 1897 and Adine Masson was the first winner of that.•The first true French Open tennis tournament was played at the Stade de Roland-Garros in 1925. The tournament still was not open as all the participants were restricted on amateurs only at that time.
