GENERAL PRESENTATION

Ecole navale is accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research to award an M.Sc in Marine Engineering, entitled “Marine Environment and safety of navigation”.

The « Marine Environment and Safety of Navigation » Masters is open for application from foreign military cadets who wish to serve their country’s military navy.

Classes leading to the MSc take place over two years during four semesters. Students should obtain a total of 120 ECTS1 (30 ECTS per semester) to be awarded the master’s degree :

- semesters 1, 2, 3 take place at the Naval Academy and include lectures, onsite projects and internships ;- semester 4 is carried out onboard an amphibious LPD and a destroyer for the practical sea-training «  Jeanne d’Arc campaign  ». This semester prepares the young officers for their maritime profession by putting theory into practice and enhancing their geopolitical awareness.

ADMISSION CONDITIONS

Students can either enter directly the Masters course if they have already obtained a Bachelor of science and have military and maritime basic knowledge, or follow a first year at the French naval academy composed of various core courses before being allowed into the Masters course. All the candidates will have to take an exam in Maths, Physics, French and English, which will be organised by the local French Defence Attaché, to verify their knowledge and assess their ability to succeed. Most of the costs are taken into account by France in the name of naval cooperation. Remaining tuition per year, to be paid by cadets’ country, is 14000 €.

Scholarships and tuition discounts may be granted on a case-by-case basis.

ACADEMIC TRAINING

“Officer – Seaman – Engineer”: three-in-one training

The academic program aims to provide students with skills acquired through :

- humanities and leadership classes which are necessary qualities for future military leaders, as well as a good knowledge of general and maritime English ; - maritime training with a blended approach of theory and practical training at sea on school ships as well as sailboats ; - scientific training based on lectures, pairwork and group projects.

Professional autonomy is a key word in our training of midshipmen. Our pedagogy is adapted to encourage students to take on their responsibilities through situational exercises and projects. The Masters students follow the same maritime training and humanities classes as the engineering students, to encourage mutual exchanges on a graduate level, whereas the specialized scientific curriculum is specific to their diploma.

1 ECTS : European Credits Transfer and accumulation System. ECTS are awarded when students successfully complete the courses and evaluations, according to the Bologna Process.

ACADEMIC YEAR - SEMESTERS

In accordance with the Bologna Process for Higher Education, the academic year is organized around semesters to ensure comparability in the standards and quality of higher education qualifications in other European countries and encourages semester exchanges with other universities and graduate engineering schools in France and abroad.

Every year foreign students from Italy, Spain, Portugal, UK and USA follow a semester in our Masters and obtain the 30 ECTS necessary for their home country diploma.

Likewise, some of our French students follow a semester abroad thus availing of an enriching cultural and linguistic experience as well as obtaining their 30 ECTS1. Partners in our Masters Exchange Program include the naval academies in Livorno [Italy], Annapolis [USA], Lisbonne [Portugal], Marín [Espagne] and the University of Southampton [Great Britain].

EVALUATION

Assessment of knowledge acquired and evaluation grades are awarded during the two examination sessions :

- the first exam session takes place at the end of a module and is preferably scheduled during the exam period which is programmed at the end of a semester ;- the second exam session is organized at the beginning of the following semester for those students who failed the first session and who still hope to obtain the diploma.

In the case of a fail at the second session, the student keeps the ECTS obtained and an examination board decides if s/he can reapply for the failed modules. Thus the student will be awarded the diploma with the repeat class s/he followed, if they succeed in the required modules.

The Examination Board members include academy faculty and external teachers. The naval academy’s commanding officer presides over the board thus representing the authority awarding the diploma. At the end of every semester, the Examination Board convenes to examine student results, consider admissions to the Masters and approve graduate lists.
