Have students write their name out (in large letters) on a piece of construction paper. Then have them choose 5-10 adjectives from either the masculine or feminine adjectivesheet that describe them and write them creatively on their name.
We put together a booklet of simple French phrases. Have them fill in the blanks withtheir responses, then copy it in French, then write the English translation. Have them doone sentence per lesson (the sentences relate to the lesson topics). Attached below areexample sentences. --

Notes:
Make it clear that the pre-assessment is not a test! It is just to see what they alreadyknow. Go over the answers with the class, then allow the students to share what theyanswered before giving the correct answers. Depending on the grade level, you maychoose to have them add more or less adjectives to their name. Make it clear that theyshould fill up the entire paper with their name (large letters). And, above all, encouragecreativity!

Resources:
Tom Frager- Lady Melody LyricsMusic VocabularyMusic Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VadTd3uYCg4
Notes:
Feel free to give them names of other French songs/artists as well so that they can lookthem up on their own. Some examples would be the popular French artist Coeur dePirate, or the French rap song "Celui" by Colonel Reyel, or even the classic French artistEdith Piaf. Be sure to only suggest songs that are appropriate for their age level! Themusic video for "Lady Melody" is also fun to show the kids.
Tom Frager: Lady Melody
J'me laisse aller ,
Elle me suit, à chaque voyage loin
d'ici,
Elle est, ma lady melody,
Ma p'tite lady,
Elle est ce qui me reste,
Quand j'ai déjà tout essayé,
Elle chante quand la vie me
blesse,
Elle me suit, à chaque voyage loin
d'ici,
Elle est, ma lady melody,
Avec elle je fly away,
Tu vois comme un là-haut
je fly away,
Quand j'entends sa melody je fly
away,
Il n'y a quelle qui me comprenne je
fly away,
Elle me donne le fire et je fly
away,
J'évite les de la vie et
je fly away,
Tu vois comme un oiseau, là-haut
je fly away,
Comme un oiseau qui plane et je
fly là-haut, tout là-haut,
Elle est dans ma tête,
Elle ne m'abandonne jamais,
Je la trouve encore plus belle
quand elle s'habille en reggae,
Elle me suit, à chaque loin
d'ici,
Elle est, ma lady melody,
Elle est dans ma tête.
I often let myself go
It's right, I wait
For the inauspicious moments to
pass
So that we could live again as
before
I'm not sure that I have found my
place
I'm not sure, but to avoid damage
I have found my little Lady Melody
She is in my mind
She never deserts me
I even find her more beautiful when
she's dressed in Reggae
She follows me on every journey to
far-away places
She is my Lady Melody
My little lady
She's what's left to me
When I have tried everything
She sings when life hurts me
And I sing alongside of her
In storm and thunder
She never deserts me when I get
no further
I have found out that she
Is the sun I was waiting for
She is in my mind
She never deserts me
I even find her more beautiful when
she's dressed in Reggae
She follows me on every journey to
far-away places
She is my Lady Melody
With her I fly away
Look, like a bird up there I fly away
When I hear her melody, I fly away
There's nobody who understand
me like she does, I fly away
She give me the fire and I fly away
I avoid all the difficulties in life and
fly away
Look, like a bird up there I fly away
Like a bird which glides, and I fly
up high in the sky
She is in my mind
She never deserts me
I even find her more beautiful when
she's dressed in Reggae
She follows me on every journey to
far-away places
She is my Lady Melody
She is in my mind.

Also listen to: Edith Piaf, Carla Bruni
Session 3: Art
Begin with a PowerPoint showing different French artists, such as Monet and Degas. Also include examples of the artists' works you will be working with for the activity.
Activity:
Choose three or so French artists to feature. Then, using the "Je Suis un Artiste" artbook, copy one piece of art from each artist. Pass them out randomly, and have the kidsduplicate the works of art. If you are not able to get the book, then find the paintingsonline and have the kids duplicate them.
Artwork chosen:
• Jean Dubuffet, Bateau, 1965
• Niki de Saint Phalle, The Zoo with You, 1970
• Fernand Leger, Sans Titre, or Chariot cubiste, 1924
Homework:
Have them illustrate four of the vocabulary words.
Resources:
• Artist introduction PowerPoint• Art vocabulary• Art supplies• "Je Suis un Artiste" book: http://www.amazon.fr/Je-suis-artiste-Picasso-
Dubuffetldp/2358320870
Notes:
The kids loved this session! They had a lot of fun recreating the works of art with theirown twist. The "Je Suis un Artiste" book was very helpful, but it is possible to do thesame activity without it. It is easier for the activity if the art supplies are simple, such asmarkers or colored pencils. For a shorter lesson, paint is too complicated and messy.

Session 4 : Paris
It is essential that they learn about France's world-famous capital, Paris. This sessionintroduces them to two of Paris' most famous landmarks: The Eiffel Tower and L'arc duTriomphe.
Activity:
They are going to write a letter as if they are visiting one of the two landmarks. On thefront of the handout (see Resources) there is a picture of the landmark as well as somequestions about it. On the back they can write their letter.
Homework:,--
There is no homework for this session. If they do not finish the letter in class, they mayfinish it at home.
Resources:
• Eiffel Tower handout• L'arc du Triomphe handout
Notes:
Give them a lot of time for the activity- this is a big one. You can either give them 'one ofeach handout, so they all have two, or randomly distribute them. If they finish early theycan start another. Encourage them to color the picture and make it beautiful! Give thema template for the letter as well, or at least requirements such as three sentencesminimum, what you learned about the monument, etc. This class had access to iPads(one per student), so they were able to look up answers to the questions on their own. Ifthat or computer access is not available, they can either answer the questions at homeor you can give them the answers as a class (teach it to them).

Session 5: Cuisine
Activity:
Have them fill out the homework sheet with the new cuisine-related vocabulary.Encourage them to spend a lot of time on it because they're doing it in class. Also, don'tforget the French phrases booklet.
While they are doing their classwork, prepare little food snacks. Some ideas are Frenchcheeses, crackers, bread, and meringues. Since wine is very popular in France, a goodsubstitute is grape juice. Also make sure to consider any allergies such as dairy andgluten allergies when planning your menu.
After serving the snacks, talk a bit about different-French foods and meals. Frencheating customs are considerably different from American customs.
Resources:
French foodsCuisine vocabulary
Notes:
This is a fun session, but can get a bit messy. I would recommend passing out the foodto the kids individually rather than having them come to you to get it. It's easier and lessmessy. I chose to serve Brie cheese with gluten-free crackers with meringues fordessert. The students loved this session.
