Tone• While mood is the feeling that a story

creates in a reader, tone is the writer’s attitude toward the subject or audience of the story.

• Look for clues in the language the writer uses to identify how the writer feels about the subject.

Donovan and Larry were early for baseball practice. They decided to run up and down the bleachers to exercise before the rest of the team arrived.

Larry was first to the top. He whispered to Donovan, “Look over there.” He pointed to a man sleeping on the highest, narrow bench of the bleachers. His pants and shirt were faded, worn, and too large for his thin frame. One big toe stuck out of a huge hole in his sock. His scraped-up shoes sat a few feet away.

Donovan whispered, “We should help him out. Let’s hide something good in his shoes. Then, when he wakes up, he will have a nice surprise.”

Why are Mood and Tone Important?

Mood and tone are important because they help the reader to determine the author’s purpose and the overall theme or main idea of the story.

What is the difference between the tone and the mood of a piece?

Tone = Person + Attitude

Mood = Environment + how it makes viewer feel

Your Task

You will be given a Tone or mood word. It will be your task to do the following:

1. Set up a scene that will give off your particular tone/ create a certain mood

2. Come up with the setting, some character action, background music, outline of plot events, maybe even some dialogue

3. Write a short paragraph explain how your choices will create the tone that you have

• Each person in your group should explain at least one part of the scene you have created

• One way of splitting this up could be 1. First person- explains the tone word you received

and what it means 2. Second person- explains the setting of your

scene and why you picked it 3. Third person- explains the main plot events that

might happen in your scene and why you picked it4. Fourth person- explains some characters actions

or dialogue and why you picked it.
