Did You Know? Ron Jennings developed a powerful connection with readers of the Democrat over his 35 years as a reporter and columnist, and that commu- nity connection will be cele- brated in September when Jennings will be inducted into the Missouri Press Asso- ciation Newspaper Hall of Fame. Jennings, who worked for the Democrat from 1972 to 2007, will be joined by five other journalists set to be in- ducted into the hall on Sept. 9 during the 145th annual convention of the MPA. The inductees were announced Thursday. Jennings will be the first Democrat reporter to receive the honor and will be part of the 21st group to be inducted after the hall’s establishment in 1991. Democrat Editor Bob Sat- nan and former reporter Jay Nies spearheaded Jennings’ nomination, which included letters of support from De- mocrat Publisher Dave Phillips, former Democrat Editor Doug Kneibert and Elle Wasson, executive di- rector of Sedalia-Pettis County United Way. MPA Executive Director Doug Crews told the Democ- rat that the selection commit- tee chose Jennings based on the strength of his nomina- tion. “The information submit- ted included an amazing amount of tributes from the community, and it was great to read all of that. It was clear that Ron had made a significant impact on the community through his work,” Crews said. Jennings, and his wife, Pat, a Sacred Heart School counselor, spoke to the De- mocrat by telephone on Fri- day while in Branson for a family reunion and to cele- brate the couple’s 38th wed- ding anniversary. The couple was notified of the honor last week, and both expressed surprise at the announce- ment. “Really, I would just ex- press my gratitude,” Ron Jennings said. “It is an honor for us and for me. I am just completely surprised. Thank you. I can’t tell you how much it means to me.” Pat Jennings said she knew of the nomination but did not tell Ron so it would be a surprise when the an- nouncement came from MPA. “Ron was Ron. He said: ‘This wouldn’t have hap- pened at all if it hadn’t been for all the people who let me write about their lives.’ This was totally unexpected for him, but he is very happy about it and very gratified. The newspaper was always part of his life and the people he wrote about became part of his life as well,” Pat said. She said health complica- tions brought about by recur- ring brain tumors (an issue Ron shared with readers through multiple surgeries and treatments after the first tumor was discovered in 1990) have forced Ron to rely on a powered wheel- chair to get around most days and have made it some- times difficult for him to ex- press himself. “We are kind of at the point where we are not seek- ing any additional treat- ment,” Pat said. “The only option is to get into a sur- gery, which no one wants to do, or else into things that aren’t effective, like chemotherapy or radiation.” Satnan called Jennings’ legacy the “gold standard” that all other journalists and writers for the paper are judged against. “If you were to walk the streets of Sedalia and ask any resident about Ron, you would get an earful about his always positive demeanor, his compassion for his fellow man, his interest in lifting up his community and, of course, his wonderful stories about the people and places that make Sedalia a true hometown,” Satnan wrote in his nomination letter. In her letter, Wasson praised Jennings’ skills as a storyteller and his ability to paint a full, complex picture of the subjects of his stories. “There are favorite fea- tures or sections of the news- paper that we focus on and Ron’s was always at the top of my list. Writing has been his vocation, but people are his passion. I thank Ron for sharing his passion with us all these years,” Wasson wrote. Phillips wrote of Jen- nings’ “tenacity and quiet spirit” in his nomination let- ter, citing a passage from a column Jennings wrote in 1986 about a night around the campfire: “You looked around — and you saw the now-famil- iar faces that this sort of fire brought together, many of whom were strangers at the start of the week. You looked to the ground and you saw leaping flames of glowing embers. You looked up and saw a sky spilling over with stars. You could spill your soul or just sit and ponder in silence. But you could never just sit there … Ever,” Jen- nings wrote. “Ron was born with an extraordinary gift, and there are many in our community who were inspired and en- lightened by his weekly columns. He is truly one of a kind,” Phillips said. Along with Jennings, the MPA will recognize the late Melba and Nathaniel Sweets, longtime publishers of the St. Louis American; the late Norman J. Colman, second president of MPA; Don War- den, retired publisher of the Gasconade County Republi- can in Owensville; and Doug Davis, publisher of the Lamar Democrat. Sunny Days Create Cloudy(And Dangerous) Nights ForYour Car’s Headlights

(NAPS) - To stay on the road to safety, you need to inspect yourvehicle’s headlights after they’ve been out in the sun. Its heat cancause damage to them and make driving unsafe.

In fact, if you are out cruising at night, the odds are good that youcan’t see anywhere near as well-or as far-as you could when your carwas new. Why? Over time, your headlights get dull and cloudy, a con-dition somewhat akin to humancataracts. This cloudiness, caused by degradation from thesun’s bright rays, reduces anddiffuses the light going throughthe headlight lens. This makes itdifficult to see when driving inthe dark and creates an unsafesituation for many Americans, most of whom don’t even real-ize it’s happened. In addition, the buildup actually creates anunusual beam pattern that canbe a major distraction foroncoming traffic.

Most likely, if your car is fiveyears old or older, the head-lights are already showing visi-ble signs of weathering andhazing. Folks who live in warm climates are likely to experience theproblem much sooner.

So take a step outside and look at your headlights. If they are hazyor cloudy, there’s a good chance your visibility is being greatly com-promised. But there is a solution-and it’s a simple one. A headlightrestoration kit takes only about 30 minutes per lens to restore them. You do not need to be a mechanic. You don’t even need to be mechani-cal. If you can wash your car, you can clean and restore your head-lights.

Before heading outside on a hot day, you probably slather on somesunscreen and throw on a pair of shades to protect your skin and eyesfrom too much exposure. The headlight restoration kit does the samefor your headlights with its a UV block clear coat, a specially formulat-ed coating designed to extend the life of your headlight lenses. Plus, ittakes years of degradation away, provides up to three times more lighton the road and, most importantly, provides you with greater visibilityand a safer nighttime driving experience. Certainly a case where a lit-tle elbow grease goes a long way.

Contact your advertising representative if you would like to haveyour business featured in this space.

Sunlight can degrade your car’s head-light lenses and make it harder for you tosee when driving at night.

Hyperthermia a real threat foroutdoorsmen in summer

My fellow members of the ProfessionalOutdoor Media Association and I semi-offi-cially consider hunting and fishing to be theonly traditional outdoor sports, but I am notabout to break my favorite fly rod over thehead of someone who thinks we should haveincluded mushroom gathering or even naturephotography.

Participating in any of these sports is saferon an accident-per-participant-per-hour basisthan is engaging in just about any physicalactivity you’d care to name, including golf.

Relative safety is far too often accompa-nied by confusion regarding the comparativedanger posed by situations or conditions anoutdoorsman might encounter.

For the purposes of this discussion I’vedivided potential threats to summertime out-door safety into three categories: real, vaguelypossible and (almost) forgettable.

Hyperthermia is the medical term for whathappens when the body is unable to regulatethe upper limits of its internal temperature. Iteasily ranks first on the list of real dangers.

Hyperthermia is responsible for a sizablemajority of all potentially life-threatening out-door incidents during the hot weather months.

The classic symptoms of hyperthermia(which is also called heat stroke, heat exhaus-tion or heat prostration) include various com-binations of excessive sweating followed byno sweating, fatigue, disorientation, inabilityto make simple decisions, and unconscious-ness.

People with these symptons should seekmedical attention immediately.

Heat-related disorders are easy to prevent.Avoid spending long periods of time outdoorsduring the middle part of the day, when thesun’s rays are their strongest and most direct.

Drink plenty of cool water, but limit con-sumption of beer and caffeinated soda. Wearlong pants and long sleeved shirts except whenactively engaged in water sports like swim-ming and skiing.

Mosquitos, ticks, chiggers, spiders andother assorted bugs have taken the fun out ofcountless outdoor experiences, and they can doa lot more.

Some species of mosquitos and ticks carrydiseases, the effects of which on humans rangefrom unpleasant to fatal.

Most problems with ticks, chiggers andmosquitos can be greatly reduced by wearinglong pants with the cuffs duck taped to the topof 11-inch boots, which also eliminates thepossibility of snake bite.

Add a long sleeved shirt tucked into thewaistband of the pants. Wear a cap and add abug proof head net — which doubles as thebest face mask you’ll every use — if either theticks or the mosquitos are especially pesky.

A good insect repellent fills the final chinkin the outdoorsman’s anti-bug armor.

Missouri is home to copperheads, severalspecies of rattlesnakes, and a few cottonmouthwater moccasins, all of which are venomous.

Being bitten by a snake is firmly within thevaguely possible danger category.

With the debatable exception of the cotton-mouth, Missouri’s poisonous snakes are shycreatures, which are as afraid of people as peo-ple are of them. Paying attention to where youput your hands and feet and using commonsense if you encounter a snake are all it takesto make you statistically slither-proof.

Healthy small mammals (raccoons, opos-sums, foxes, skunks, bats, etc.) are a vaguelypossible threat to humans.

A mammal of any size or species can beextremely dangerous to people if the animal isinfected with rabies or one of several othertransmittable diseases.

If you encounter a wild animal that showsno fear of people, drools, staggers, is obvi-ously sick, or is out and about at an unusualtime or in an unusual place for that species, give it a wide berth.

Do not attempt to capture it or give it anytype of assistance no matter how well inten-tioned. Contact a conservation agent and tellhim or her exactly where and when you sawthe animal.

A surprising number of Missourians arefearful of the state’s increasing numbers ofmountain lions, black bears and coyotes.

There are documented fatal attacks onhumans in other states by all three of thosespecies. People who venture into Missouri’soutdoors face a danger of being eaten by alarge wild animal are so astronomically remotethat it should be forgotten.

If you absolutely have to be worried abouta large animal, keep an eye out for a bull in thepasture you’re sneaking across to get to someforbidden farm pond.

Did You Know?

Our solar system islocated about

30,000 light yearfrom the center

of thegalaxy.

It rained on their parade — and prettymuch everything else — but PettisCounty Relay for Life still had a success-ful 2011 event in the eyes of its organiz-ers.

This year’s Relay, with the main eventheld June 10 at the west campground atthe Missouri State Fairgrounds, hasbrought in $89,437.21. The goal of$90,000 can still be reached, though, asteams can turn in money thru July 31.

Stephanie Louiselle, chairwoman ofthe Pettis County Relay, said, “There isstill money out there that probably hasn’tbeen credited yet,” but added the total isa good representation of what was raised.

Louiselle said she was pleased withthe outcome “considering we got rainedout about 11 p.m.” The event was sched-uled to run overnight June 10-11, but acollection of significant storms movedinto the area the evening of June 10 andforced organizers to regroup.

“The rain came during the openingceremony,” Louiselle said, causing post-ponement of some Relay traditionalevents. “We got the Survivors Lap in atabout 8 p.m., then did the parade ofteams and the luminaria lighting. Thecommittee then got together and decidedto call it off before next storm came in.”

Pam Ollison, Pettis County Relay sur-vivors chair, said dealing with unpre-dictable weather comes with the territory.

“It’s better if we can have (the event)outside,” she said. “The communitycomes and participates more. We got ourmajor ceremonies in ... but (bad weather)does affect our numbers.”

Ollison said the impact was felt great-est by teams that sell food during theovernight event to raise money.

Louiselle said, “Considering the shortnight, we’re happy we came in where wedid. You can’t help Mother Nature.”

This was the first year Relay was heldat the fairgrounds, moving from JennyJaynes Stadium. Ollison said she lovedthe new location.

“It was much easier to set up. All theway around, it was just way better,” shesaid.

Concerning the football stadium, Olli-son said, “There were issues with the ac-tual playing field — we tried to respect it,but we needed more space than what thatallowed us.”

Louiselle appreciated participants’ pa-tience through the bad weather, and saidshe is hopeful that “everybody comesback and does it again next year.”

Ollison said, “We had a lot of in-volvelment, but I still would like to seemore involvement.”

She said if any club or organizationwould like to learn more about Relay forLife, “There are many of us who wouldbe happy to come speak with them.”
