Chapter 1 Getting Started with MusicPad Pro and

• • • • • •MusicPad Pro+

What is a MusicPad Pro?The MusicPad Pro is a music score tablet with a touch screen display that you can use to annotate, store, and display music scores during rehearsals or performances. It comes with MusicPad Manager software, which makes it easy to add or remove digital music scores to or from your MusicPad and to organize your digital music portfolio. The digital music must be in a FreeHand (FH) file format. Where do you find scores in FreeHand format? No problem! You can purchase music in FreeHand format from FreeHand Systems Digital Music Store, import PDF music scores into FreeHand Format, convert scores created in Sibelius® or Finale®

programs into FreeHand format, or use your scanner to create graphic files and then convert the files into FreeHand format.

The following MusicPad Pro features give you the edge during rehearsal and performance:

• Add or erase rehearsal marks and notations.

• Apply notes to scores in different colors.

• Turn pages remotely (no hands!).

• Connect to your Windows® PC or Macintosh® using an Ethernet or USB connection.

• Use look-ahead views, repeats, and cuts.

What is a MusicPad Pro+?The MusicPad Pro+ has the same features as the MusicPad Pro, as well as:

• 64 MB external flash memory in addition to 32 MB of internal memory.

• A rechargeable battery.

What is MusicPad Manager?MusicPad Manager is the FreeHand Systems software you load onto your Windows PC or Macintosh computer.

Use the software to import, scan, and archive musical scores scores, and to move scores back and forth between your computer and your MusicPad Pro. Your MusicPad Pro has pad software (software different from MusicPad Manager) loaded onto it. The pad software helps you create, edit, and play your musical scores.

While there are tasks you can do both on your system and on MusicPad Pro, some tasks can only be done on one or the other:

Tasks That Can Be Done on My Computer and on MusicPad ProThe following tasks can be done from both your system and your MusicPad Pro. However, the screens displayed or the method used may vary somewhat.

• You can calibrate your MusicPad Pro from MusicPad Manager on your computer or from your MusicPad Pro.

• You can use the menu and tool bars on MusicPad Manager to access tasks and displays. MusicPad Pro has a tool bar, but no menu bar.

• The advanced preferences differ slightly between MusicPad Manager on your MusicPad Pro and on your computer.

Upgrading Your SoftwareYour MusicPad Pro is shipped with the most recent version of MusicPad Manager software. To check for software updates, see the FreeHand Systems support page at:

To upgrade the software on your computer:

1 Go to the FreeHand System’s support page and download the latest software onto your Windows PC or Macintosh.

2 Run the installer to upgrade the MusicPad Manager software on your computer. Follow the screen prompts. When the installation is finished, upgrade the pad software on your MusicPad Pro.

To upgrade the software on your MusicPad Pro:

1 Make sure that your MusicPad Pro is connected (networked) to your system by means of an Ethernet or a Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable. From the MusicPad Manager tool bar, select the Tools (hammer) icon; then select File Manager. If you see a picture of a computer and a picture of a MusicPad, your computer and your MusicPad Pro are connected.

To upgrade the pad software, open MusicPad Manager and select the Tools (hammer) icon on the tool bar, then select “Install MusicPad Upgrade.” To complete the software upgrade, follow the onscreen prompts.

Your Computer System’s Minimum RequirementsYour MusicPad Pro operates best with the following computer system minimum requirements:

• IBM-compatible system with Pentium II or higher processor running Windows 98 SE, Windows Me, Windows 2000, or Windows XP

• Macintosh running Mac OS 9.2 or Mac OS X v10.2 (minimum), Mac OS X v10.3.2 (recommended)

• 64 MB RAM (minimum)

• 50 MB available hard disk space

• XGA display with settings at 1024x768 pixels, 16-bit color (minimum)

• CD-ROM drive

• A USB cable (provided)

• Ethernet adapter and either a crossover Ethernet cable (local connection) or a straight-through Ethernet cable (LAN connection)

MusicPad Pro ComponentsThe following components are standard on a MusicPad Pro:

The following I/O connections are standard on the MusicPad Pro and MusicPad Pro+:

• One 12Vdc jack for connection to a supplied external AC to DC converter.

• Two USB ports used to connect to your computer or peripheral devices (such as a printer or a scanner). The USB ports support standard plug-and-play and hot swapping, meaning that the MusicPad Pro usually recognizes whatever device is connected to it.

• One DB15 standard video port used to connect the MusicPad Pro to a monitor for ease of viewing or for larger display to an audience (landscape mode only).

• One mini DIN (stereo) jack for use with an accessory foot pedal for mechanical page turning.

The following accessories are available for MusicPad Pro and MusicPad Pro+:

Turn MusicPad Pro On and OffTo turn your MusicPad Pro on, push the button on the lower right-hand side of the tablet. Push the button again to power off the MusicPad, or you can tap Sleep in the pop-up box to place your MusicPad in sleep mode. Sleep mode extends your battery power. Push the button again to toggle out of sleep mode.

You also can turn your MusicPad off by tapping the red circle in the upper-right corner of the screen with your stylus.

You can also turn off your MusicPad from the tool bar. Select the Tools (hammer) icon from the tool bar; then select Shut Down the MusicPad.

Calibrate Your TouchscreenMusicPad Pro tablets are calibrated by the manufacturer and may never need adjusting. However, if you place your stylus at a specific point on your screen, but the screen behaves as if you had placed the stylus a quarter of an inch away from the actual point of contact, your tablet needs adjustment.

To calibrate your screen:

1 Select the Tools (hammer) icon from MusicPad Manager (if you are connected to the tablet by means of an Ethernet or USB cable) or from your MusicPad Pro.

2 Select Calibrate Touch Screen.

3 The calibration screen is displayed. Touch your stylus to the center of each crosshair, per the onscreen instructions.

For accurate results, use the stylus rather than your fingertip. Be careful to touch the exact center each crosshair. Make sure that only the stylus touches the screen, and no part of your hand, arm, or clothing. Dragging a shirt sleeve across the screen may be detected as a calibration point and confuse the system.

If you recalibrated your MusicPad Pro, but the calibration is still not right, you can use a paper clip to trigger a calibration screen. Locate the small hole in the back of the MusicPad Pro, above and slightly to the left of where you plug in your power cable. Insert the end of the paper clip into the hole and press down. Your MusicPad’s screen will be displayed. This procedure initiates a recalibration of your screen. Follow the instructions above to finish calibrating your tablet.

You can also trigger the calibration screen with a paper clip if you are in the video out/CRT screen, and MusicPad’s screen suddenly goes blank. Triggering recalibration brings your touch screen back.

Use the Title BarThe Title bar is the horizontal line at the top of your open score on MusicPad Pro. It displays the score title.

Use Keyboard ShortcutsWith your computer keyboard, you can use the standard menu shortcuts to move through MusicPad Manager drop down menus. For example, if you are in the Tools window, you can type “C” to go to Calibrate or “U” to Use Video out.

Find Model and Serial Number InformationIf you call FreeHand Systems Support, you will need to provide your MusicPad Pro’s serial and model numbers. When your MusicPad Pro is shipped out to you, a sticker on the back of your MusicPad has the serial number on it. But if the sticker is missing, perhaps by some trick perpetrated by the family pet, you can find the model and serial number in “About This MusicPad.”

1 Open MusicPad Manager on your Windows PC or Mac.

2 Select the Tools (hammer) icon from the toolbar; then select Download purchased music.

3 The Security window is displayed. In the User and Password fields, enter the user name and password you used to purchase your scores at the FreeHand Systems Store; then click OK. The Download Purchased Music window is displayed.

5 Your purchased music list starts downloading. If any error message popup boxes are displayed, click Yes to continue downloading the list. The Download Purchased Music window is displayed.

How Do I Convert Digital Files to FreeHand Format?You can scan a printed score and save it in a graphic format, such as bitmap or JPEG, and then import it into FreeHand format. Manage Your Music Portfolio With File ManagerIn the same way you would organize your print music portfolio in a file cabinet, you can use File Manager to organize your digital scores in FreeHand format.

File Manager is part of the MusicPad Manager software. Use File Manager to organize your scores and to move scores back and forth between your computer and your MusicPad.

Open File Manager

To open File Manager:

1 Select the Tools icon (hammer) from the MusicPad Manager software on your system.

2 Select File Manager. The File Manager window is displayed.

The File Manager window has an upper pane that shows the scores and folders on your computer and a lower pane that shows any music and folders on your MusicPad. Each pane has its own toolbar which you use to create folders and to copy, move, and delete music files and folders.

Create a FolderOrganize your music scores in MusicPad Manager by creating folders in File Manager.

To create a folder:

1 Select the Tools icon (hammer) from the toolbar; then select File Manager. The MusicPad File Manager is displayed.

2 Select the New Folder icon (the folder with an asterik) on the File Manager toolbar.

The new folder is created in the directory level displayed in File Manager. If you want to create a folder under another directory, double-click on each directory until you reach the level you want.

3 Enter a name for the new folder and select Enter.

Move Scores From Your Computer to Your MusicPadYou can move individual scores or folders containing groups of scores from your music portfolio back and forth between your computer and your MusicPad Pro.

To move scores onto your MusicPad Pro:

1 Select the Tools icon (hammer) from the toolbar; then select File Manager. The MusicPad File Manager is displayed.

2 Select the score you want to move from your computer. To select a group of scores, use mouse-click to select the first score; then select either the Ctrl key or Shift key to select the other scores. Notice the monitor on the left side of the pane—this pane has scores on your computer.

3 Select the down arrow between the two panes to move your score from your system to your MusicPad.

Likewise, you can move scores from your MusicPad Pro to your computer. Select any scores or folders from the bottom pane and click the up arrow. The scores or folders are moved to your computer.

Copy or Move a ScoreCopy and paste scores or folders in File Manager and move them to another location in File Manager or to your MusicPad Pro.

To copy a score or folder:

1 Select the Tools (hammer) icon from the toolbar; then select File Manager. The File Manager window is displayed.

2 Select the score or folder you want to copy. Select the Copy icon on the File Manager toolbar.

3 Browse to the location to which you want to copy the score; then click the Paste icon.

To move a score or folder:

Close a ScoreTo close a score without saving changes, do one of the following:

• Select the Score icon (figure) from the toolbar; then select Close.

• Select File→Close from the menu bar.

Save a ScoreIt is important to save your annotations, rehearsal marks, and general edit sessions before opening another score or turning off your system. If you close the score without saving it, the changes you made are lost.

To save your score:

1 Tap the Save icon (the floppy disk) on the MusicPad tool bar. The score is saved.

If the Save icon is greyed out, the file has already been saved.

2 To save the score under a different name, tap the Score icon (man) and select Save As. The Save As window is displayed.

3 Tap the Keyboard icon (only on MusicPad Pro) in front of your score title to display the Keyboard. Tap on the keyboard to create a new score name; then tap Save. The .fh extension is automatically appended to the new name. The score is saved.

Rename a ScoreYou can use File Manager on your MusicPad to rename your score using.

To rename a score:

1 Select the Tools (hammer) icon, and select File Manager. The File Manager window is displayed.

2 Using your stylus, tap your file once; then tap slowly again on the file name.

Use the keyboard beside the file to edit the file name.

See also “Save a Score” on page 26 for information about the Save As feature.

Using the KeyboardSeveral MusicPad features display the Keyboard icon. When you see the icon, tap it to display the keyboard.

The keyboard is identical to a standard QWERTY layout. To select upper case letters or to create symbols, tap the Shift key, then the alpha or numeric key. To close the keyboard, tap the X at the upper-right corner of the keyboard.

Delete a ScoreScores are deleted in MusicPad Manager software and on the MusicPad itself in the same way you normally delete a file on your system.

To delete a score:

1 Open MusicPad Manager or your MusicPad.


3 Select the file or folder you want to delete. Tap or click on the Delete icon (trash bin).

Use Explorer or Finder to Manage FilesJust as you can use Explorer on a Windows PC or Finder on a Macintosh to move, copy, or delete files or folders, you can use Finder or Explorer with FreeHand files, too. Locate the directory containing your scores on your system to use those tools.

Print a ScoreYou can print a score from MusicPad Manager on your computer. To print, connect your computer to a local or network printer.

To print a score:

1 Make sure the printer is turned on and loaded with paper.

2 Open the score.

3 Select File from the menu; then select Print Setup. Choose the appropriate settings.

4 Select File again; then select Print.

NOTE: When you delete scores, they are truly gone and cannot be recovered. No “undo” button exists. When reorganizing your music library, be certain that you delete only the scores you wish to remove.

NOTE: You also can print an open score in a playlist.

Decisions...Which Navigation Bar to Use? You can navigate through your score using either a Page Navigation bar or a Rehearsal Marks Navigation bar.

Show the Page Navigation BarYou can display “tabs” for each page at the bottom of your score. In this way, you can jump quickly from one page to another.

To display the page navigation bar:

1 Select the Tools (hammer) icon from the tool bar or select Tools from the menu bar. Then select Show Page Navigation bar. The page navigation bar is displayed at the bottom of the score.

3 If your score contains rehearsal marks, the page navigation bar displays them on the lower half of the tab.

Show the Rehearsal Mark Navigation BarYour scores often contain rehearsal marks at convenient intervals throughout the pages, marking for conductors and musicians alike specific musical passages. The rehearsal navigation bar is set up so that you can display a quick tab of rehearsal marks at the bottom of your score.

To display the rehearsal mark navigation bar:

1 Select the Tools (hammer) icon from the tool bar or select Tools from the menu bar. Then select Show Rehearsal Mark Navigation bar. The rehearsal mark navigation bar is displayed at the bottom of the score. It displays only pages containing a rehearsal mark.

2 Tap on a rehearsal mark to jump ahead or back through the score. For more information about rehearsal marks, see Chapter 7, “Creating and Using Rehearsal Marks” on page 81.

Hide the Tool BarWhen you want to give your score as much display room as possible, you can hide the tool bar at the top of the score. Additionally, hiding the tool bar improves image quality. FreeHand-formatted scores purchased from the FreeHand Systems Store are specially formatted to fit a full page display on a MusicPad Pro.

• Tap the Bar icon from the tool bar. The tool bar is hidden in your score.

• To display the tool bar again, tap the top of your score.

With System BreaksYou can edit a score with a system break, deleting or moving part of the score and creating a new page. The resulting partial page is reflected on the tool bar when you click on the page number.

From Rehearsal MarksYou can click on rehearsal marks to jump to different locations in your score and display a Rehearsal Marks Navigation bar at the bottom of your score. You also can select the Annotation icon and click on one of the rehearsal marks at the bottom of the window to jump to that rehearsal mark in your score.

From Look-Ahead PagesFor easy transitions from page to page in your score while you are playing or singing, you can set the score to display look-ahead pages. Look-ahead pages display the bottom of the page you are on while also displaying the top of the next page of the score. As you tap to the next page, the new page is displayed on the top, and the page from which you are still performing is displayed on the bottom.

The arrows change on the tool bar to black and white when look-ahead paging is on.

To set look-ahead pages:

From Foot Pedal Page Turner (Optional)The foot pedal page turner is an optional piece of equipment you can use to turn pages on your MusicPad Pro.

To use the foot pedal page turner:

1 Locate the cable that was shipped with the foot pedal page turner.

2 Connect one end of the cable to the foot pedal and the other end to the Foot Pedal jack on the back of your MusicPad Pro. The MusicPad Pro recognizes that the foot pedal is connected.

3 With a single pedal, press the foot pedal to turn pages forward. With a dual pedal, press the right pedal to turn pages forward and the left pedal to turn pages backward.

Animate Page TurningThose who love the feeling of the page flipping over or find it a better visual queue than instantaneous page replacement can still flip pages in a digital world.

To animate page turning:

1 Select the Tools (hammer) icon from the tool bar; then select MusicPad Manager Options. The Options window is displayed.

2 Select Animate Page Turning; then click OK at the bottom of the window. When pages are turned, they appear to flip over.

Organize Pages in Your ScoreYou can use the repeat and cut tool to organize a score arrangement to make better use of your rehearsal time. By specifying the order of pages you want displayed and repeating pages or repeating passages, you create a working arrangement to save under a different name.

Record the Repeat and CutThe following information guides you in recording a cut.

To record a repeat cut:

1 Open the score you want to arrange.

2 Go to the page in your score you want to be first in the arrangement.

3 Tap the Score (figure) icon on the tool bar; then tap Record Repeats and Cuts. A popup box is displayed.

4 Go to the page drop-down list on the tool bar. Tap on the page numbers you want in the order in which you want to rehearse them, including repeating pages.

5 When you are finished, tap OK in the Record and Repeats Cut popup box. Your new arrangement is ready to play back.

Play Back the Repeat and CutAfter you have recorded repeats and cuts on a score, you can play back the arrangement.

1 Tap the Score (figure) icon on the tool bar; then tap Play Repeats and Cuts. A popup box is displayed.

2 Go to the page drop-down list on the tool bar. You can view the order of your arrangement.

3 Tap the Score (figure) icon on the tool bar, then tap Save As. Save the arrangement under a different name so you don’t overwrite the original score.

4 Use the forward and back arrows to move through your new arrangement, or use a remote page turner. Notice that the arrows are blue, indicating that your are in Repeat and Cut mode.

• • • • • • Creating and Using Playlists

A playlist is an online portfolio of your scores. Using a playlist keeps your music readily available and in an order of your own choosing. Always. Let those paper scores try that!

Create a playlist by listing your scores in the order you play each piece during rehearsal or for a performance. The first page of your next score can be on your screen immediately after you finish a current piece. You can program an entire concert into a playlist, and never again fumble for music between numbers. You can also quickly reorder the pieces—no more fumbling around to find the next piece when the director changes the performance on you!

Create a PlaylistUse a playlist to put your scores in rehearsal or performance order, compiling them in one file. Each score is displayed in the order that you specify. You can create a playlist on your computer or on your MusicPad Pro.

To create a playlist

1 Tap the Playlist (sheet music) icon on the toolbar; and select New Playlist. The New Playlist window is displayed.

2 The right pane of the New Playlist window displays all the scores in your music library. Move scores to your playlist on the left by selecting the file on the right and tapping the left arrow, or by dragging and dropping the file onto the playlist.

3 To change the order of the scores in the playlist, select the score in your playlist and tap on the up or down arrows.

4 Oops! If you added a score you didn’t intend to, just select it in your playlist and tap on the Trash Can icon. The score is only removed from your playlist—not from your music library.

1 Tap the Folder icon from the toolbar; and select the playlist. The Open window is displayed.

2 Tap the Open button at the bottom of the window, or double-tap the playlist in the Open window. The playlist is displayed.

To open a playlist from the menu bar in MusicPad Manager:

1 Click the File menu; then select Open. The Open window is displayed.

2 Select the playlist you wish to open; then click the Open button.

Select a Score in a PlaylistYou can go directly to a score in your playlist.

Edit a PlaylistEditing a playlist is almost like creating a playlist—except now, you can save the playlist instead of doing a “save as.” In this way, you can modify the original file.

To edit a playlist:

1 Select the Playlist icon, then select Edit Playlist. The Edit Playlist window is displayed.

2 Use the up and down arrows to move files up or down in the playlist. Use the trash can arrow to remove files from the playlist. Use the the left arrow to add files to the playlist.

3 Select the Save button at the bottom of the window to save the changes to your playlist.

Delete a PlaylistYou cannot use the Playlist menut to delete a playlist. However, you can delete a playlist just as you can remove any file in MusicPad Pro or MusicPad Manager. Deleting a playlist only deletes the playlist—the scores in the playlist are not removed.

You have your scores in your digital music portfolio, and you can view all of them on your MusicPad Pro. However, you would like to make some scores a little bit easier to read—a little more musician-friendly. You might want to change the background color to make the score clearer and more readable. Or maybe you want to eliminate excess white space, making it possible to have a larger display of the score. This chapter contains information to help you change your score:

Change Page DimensionThis section contains information about the following:

View Page DimensionsFrom an open score, you can check the pixel size on a sheet in the score. Knowing the dimensions helps you decide if cropping is necessary. If the page size is more than 598 pixels wide or 798 pixels high, you will want to crop the score to prevent the page from being compressed to fit the dimensions of your MusicPad Pro display screen.

To view the page dimensions:

1 Tap the Tool (hammer) icon; then select Sheet Information.

Crop Your ScoreIf your score has excess white space along the margins, you can crop it to eliminate the white space.

Prevent Enlargement of Undersized ScoresIf a score is smaller than 600 pixels wide or 800 pixels high, the MusicPad Pro software expands the score to fill the available viewing space. In particular, when the original score is quite small, enlarging it can make the music difficult to read. You can specify that the software should not enlarge your score.

To specify that the software should not enlarge your score:

1 Open your score. Select the Score (figure) icon; then select Don’t Enlarge Score.

2 Select the Floppy Disk icon to save your score, which also saves the Don’t Enlarge Score option. When you open the score again, it will not be enlarged.

Change Background and Foreground ColorsWhen you display your score on MusicPad Pro or on MusicPad Manager on your computer, the background color of your score is beige and the foreground color is black by default. But if you want color, you got it! You can change background and foreground colors.

To change background or foreground colors:

1 Select the Tool (hammer) icon; then select MusicPad Manager Options. The MusicPad Manager Options window is displayed.

2 Select the Background or Foreground button. A color window is displayed.

3 Select a basic color and select OK. You can also select a basic color and adjust the hue, saturation, and other settings to create a custom color. Select Add to Custom Colors to save the custom color and select OK.

View Your Score in Landscape or Portrait FormatYou can display your score in landscape mode so that it is wider than it is taller, or in traditional portrait mode. Changing the mode does not change the actual dimensions of the score—it only changes how they are displayed.

To switch to landscape or portrait mode:

1 Select the Tool (hammer) icon; then select Switch to Landscape Orientation.

2 To switch back to portrait mode, select the Tool (hammer) icon, and select Switch to Portrait Orientation.

Viewing your score in landscape mode can change musical system breaks. For information about defining system breaks, see “Use System Breaks” on page 67.

Change the Page ArrangementWant to mix things up a bit? You can change the page arrangement in your score.

This section contains information to:

Move Your Score’s Pages AroundYou can organize sheets of music differently from the way they are displayed in the score. For example, you might want to play the musical passages in some order other than that in which they were written. Arrange the sheets of your score in any order you choose.

To move pages in your score:

1 Open your score and go to the sheet in your score you want to change.

2 Select the Score (image) icon; then select Move Sheet. The Move Current Sheet window is displayed.

3 Use the spinner to locate the page. Select OK at the bottom of the window. Repeat, replacing other pages in your score until you have the arrangement you want.

WARNING Save your original score to a new file and tinker around in that file. There is no “undo” button to return the sheets to their original order. To move sheets back again, you must move them one sheet at a time.

Delete Pages

To delete pages in your score:

1 Open your score and go to the sheet in your score you want to delete.

2 Select the Score (image) icon and select Delete Sheet.

3 A pop-up window is displayed. Select Yes to delete the page.

Use System BreaksA musical system is a set of music written from left to right which is played together and should not be separated. You may need to alter system breaks because:

• If you use a poor image of a score during the conversion process, the system breaks may not be obvious and therefore go undetected by the FreeHand Systems software.

• Landscape mode can move system breaks to inconvenient places in your score.

• You may prefer the score to be displayed with three systems, instead of the more commonly used two or four systems per page.

You can redefine system breaks to create a score display that works best for you.

Adding System BreaksCorrect system breaks depend in part on the amount of white space between the musical systems. If there is a large amount of white space, breaks can be defined easily. If there is a little white space, or if the score has guitar chords, a string of musical notes, and a vocal track, breaks may not be clear to the software.

To add system breaks:

1 Open your score. Select the Score (figure) icon; then select Edit Systems.

2 Dashed lines appear at the top and bottom of the score. Select the lines. If working on MusicPad, select lines with a stylus. If working from your computer, select lines by clicking on them. The lines serve the same function as cropping guides when you are trimming white space in scores. Drag the line to a new location; then select OK.

3 Select the Floppy disk from the toolbar to save the system breaks in your score.

NOTE: It is important to have one system break at the very top and very bottom of the score.

Moving System BreaksOnce you have created system breaks, you may want to redefine them.

To move a system break:

1 Open your score. Select the Score (figure) icon and select Edit Systems.

2 Active breaks are shown as a solid line outlined by two dashed lines. Select the active line and drag it to a new location. Then select OK.

3 Select the Floppy disk from the toolbar to save the system breaks in your score.

Deleting System BreaksYou can remove all system breaks from your score.

To delete system breaks:

1 Open your score. Select the Score (figure) icon and select Edit Systems.

Understanding Annotation RestrictionsYou can add and change annotations on your computer, or on your MusicPad Pro. There are a couple of things to remember when using annotations:

• If you hide the toolbar by tapping on the No Toolbar icon, you will be booted out of annotation mode. Sorry! If you want to see how you could accidentally tap on No Toolbar icon, see “Hide the Tool Bar” on page 32.

• Save your annotations or they will be lost when you open another score or turn off your system. For more information, see “Save Annotations” on page 77.

Display and Hide the Annotation Tool BarYou can display the Annotation tool bar from the tool bar menu. Select the Annotation icon (pen and eraser).

The annotation tool bar is displayed at the bottom of your score. Use your stylus to tap and select icons on the annotation tool bar. You can choose a pen color and a pen size, including a background pen and a white no-stave erase pen. A highlighter is available from the tool bar, too. The toolbar also lets you:

• Erase a notation

• Add musical notes

• Select and move a notation

• Hide notations

• Undo the last notation change

• Zoom in to a part of the score

Use the Background PenYou can use the background pen to eliminate marks that you do not want on your score. The background pen is commonly used to remove marks that were picked up in your document when you scanned the score. It also can be used to remove the three-hole punch marks that may have been scanned with your score.

To use the background pen:

1 Select the pen size and the background pen from the Annotation tool bar.

Note: If your score has a beige background and a black foreground, bright colors work best. White does not display well against most background, and black is difficult to distinguish from the bars, notes, and text of your score.

Leave the Staff Lines in PlaceYou neeed to erase unwanted marks while leaving staff lines untouched? The tool for you is the no-staff erase background pen. It recognizes staff lines and leaves them untouched. However, it does erase the notes!

To use the no-staff erase background pen:

1 Select the pen size and the no-staff erase background pen from the Annotation tool bar.

2 Drag the pen over the mark you want to erase.

Zoom In or OutSometimes it is easier to enlarge a portion of the score to make an accurate notation. Use the zoom feature to zoom into a portion of the score. Once the zoom feature is turned on, it remains on, even if you open a new score, until you turn it off.

To zoom in to a portion of the score:

1 Tap the Zoom (magnifying glass) icon on the Annotation tool bar. The Zoom window is displayed.

2 To move the Zoom window, tap the Zoom window title bar; then drag the title bar and release.

3 To change the magnification, tap the up or down arrows on the Zoom window.

4 To enlarge the Zoom window, select and drag the bottom right corner.

To close the Zoom window, do one of the following:

1 Tap the Zoom (magnifying glass) icon on the Annotation tool bar a second time.

2 Tap the “X” in the upper-right hand corner.

• The eraser removes marks one stroke at a time.

• The same number of erase strokes are required to remove the mark as were needed to create the mark.

• One-stroke marks (such as circles) are removed with one stroke of the eraser.

• Marking the same score for two different concerts or conductors.

• The page you are currently viewing is colored the same as the score background color.

• If there is more than one rehearsal mark on a page, the Primary rehearsal mark is displayed in the navigation bar.

2 Tap on a rehearsal mark to jump ahead or back through the score. If your score has too many pages to display on the Rehearsal Mark navigation bar, a box with an ellipsis is displayed to the far right.

To go directly to rehearsal marks from the annotation pull-down menu:

1 Select the Rehearsal Mark icon from the toolbar. The pull-down menu is displayed.

2 Select one of the rehearsal marks at the bottom of the menu to go directly to that rehearsal mark location.

To select rehearsal marks from the page navigation bar:

Label One Rehearsal Mark as PrimaryYour score can contain more than one rehearsal mark per page. What this does is display that mark in the Rehearsal Mark navigation bar. Otherwise, the Rehearsal Mark navigation bar displays the first rehearsal mark on the page.

To label a primary rehearsal mark:

1 Select the Annotation (pen and eraser) icon on the tool bar.

2 Tap the rehearsal mark you want to change. A dashed box is appears around the rehearsal mark, indicating that it is active. Rehearsal mark 1 is selected in the example below.

Move a Teleport PadIf you want to move a teleport pad, select it and drag it on the page. If you just created the teleport pad and the Add Teleport Pads popup window is still displayed, close the window before you drag the teleport pad around. Otherwise, your teleport pad may think you want to add more teleport pads.

Delete a Teleport PadWhen you no longer need a teleport pad, you can remove it from your score.

To delete a teleport pad:

1 Select the Rehearsal Mark icon on the tool bar; then select Add Teleport Pads. The Add Teleport Pads popup box is displayed.

2 Tap the teleport pad you want to remove from your score. Click Delete in the Add Teleport Pads popup box. The teleport pad is removed.

Appendix A Converting PDF Scores into FreeHand

To use a PDF score with your MusicPad Pro, you must first convert the file into Freehand (.fh) format.

To convert the PDF score, you need:

• Adobe® Acrobat® Reader

• Microsoft® Paint or another graphics program that can be used to export the score into PNG, JPEG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, and PCX graphic formats.

This document describes how to convert files using Adobe Acrobat Reader 5 and Microsoft Paint.

Set Preferences in Adobe Acrobat ReaderSet your preferences to view PDF files in the application before opening your PDF score in Acrobat Reader. Acrobat Reader saves your preferences.

1 Select Edit→Preferences→General. The Preferences window is displayed.

2 Select Display from the option list on the left; then select Preferences. In the Smoothing field, check Smooth Text, Smooth Line Art, and Smooth Images. If you are using a laptop or LCD screen, check Use Cool Type.

3 Click OK to save your preferences.

Convert Your PDF Score to an Importable Graphic Format

To convert a PDF score to FreeHand (.fh) format:

1 In Adobe Acrobat Reader, open the PDF score you want to convert. The PDF score used for this tutorial is shown below.

2 Select the Graphics Tool from the tool bar, or press G on the keyboard.

3 With the PDF score open, select View from the Menu bar; then select Actual Size.

4 Select Edit→Select All (Ctrl+A). The entire score is selected.

5 Select Edit→Copy (Ctrl+C). The score image is copied to the clipboard.

If you cannot select and copy the score’s contents, check for score security restrictions by selecting File→Document Security from the Acrobat Reader menu bar. The authoring party of the score can place security measures on the PDF file to prevent it from being copied or altered.

6 Open the Paint program (or another graphics program capable of saving in one of the graphic formats mentioned on page 93).

7 Select Edit→Paste (Ctrl+V). The score image is pasted into the Paint file.

8 Select Image→Attributes (Ctrl+E). The Attributes window is displayed.

9 Set the Width field to 598 and the Height field to 798.

10 Click OK. If your score was larger than 598 x 798 pixels, notice how it is reduced.

If part of your score is cut off after you resize it, re-open the PDF score in Acrobat Reader. Do not set View to Actual Size. Instead, click on the Sizing drop-down menu and select a smaller size.

11 Select File→Save As. The Save As window is displayed.

12 Enter a file name in the File name field.

Include the score’s page number in the file name to make it easier to import the files as a batch into MusicPad Manager. Also, to preserve the page order in scores containing more than 9 pages, begin the numbering at 01.

13 Select the file format you wish to use from the Save as type drop-down.

The native file format for MusicPad Manager is PNG.

14 Click OK.

15 Repeat Step 3 through Step 13 for each additional page in your score.

Import Your Score Graphic Files into MusicPad ManagerTo learn how to import graphic files into MusicPad Manager, read this section. If you already know how to import graphic files into MusicPad Manager, import your graphic files.

In the previous section, you learned about saving, copying, and pasting your score from Adobe Acrobat Reader to Paint and exporting your score into BMP graphic files. In this example, you import the graphic files into MusicPad Manager to create a new score.

To import the graphic files:

1 Open the MusicPad Manager application. Select File→Import.

2 Select the graphic files you want to import; then select Open. The Import Options dialog box is displayed.

3 Set the following fields, and click OK:

• Do not select Convert to Gray Scale and Sharpen.

• Select Create new FreeHand file.

• Enter the Title, Composer, Copyright, and Instrument.4 The score is displayed in FreeHand format.

5 Click on the Score icon and select Don’t Enlarge Score.

Appendix B Converting Finale Scores in to FreeHand

To use a Finale score with your MusicPad Pro, you must first convert the file into Freehand (.fh) format. A set of specially-formatted Finale templates is provided for this purpose. You can download the templates from the FreeHand Systems support page at:


Table 1 describes the templates. All templates are in portrait orientation except where otherwise noted.

If you’re familiar with exporting and converting files, convert your score using the following steps:

1 Open Finale and open a Finale-to-FreeHand template. Save it as a new file.

2 Open the score you want to convert into FreeHand format. Using the Mass Edit tool (Mass Mover tool in Finale 2002 and 2001) select (Ctrl+A) and copy (Ctrl+C) the entire score.

3 Select Edit→Insert to paste your score into the template file.

4 Select File→File Info. Add title, composer, and copyright information and click on OK.

5 Select the Graphics Tool icon. Still working from the new score, select Graphics→Export Pages from the menu bar. The Export Pages dialog box is displayed.

6 Export the score from the template file into single-page TIFF files. Set the TIFF resolution to 72 and the Type to TIFF. Note the Generate Names From field and alter as necessary.

7 Open MusicPad Manager and import the TIFF graphic files.

In the Import Dialogs box, uncheck Convert to grayscale and sharpen. Enter the Score information and select Create New FreeHand File.

Add the Templates to FinaleTo get started, add the Finale-to-FreeHand templates to your Templates folder in Finale. Table 1 on page 103 describes the conversion templates.

To add the templates to the Finale Templates folder:

1 Create a new folder named FreeHand under the Templates folder in Finale. The default location for the Templates folder for a Windows OS is C:\Program Files\Finale 2003\Templates. The default location for a Macintosh OS is a Template folder under the Finale application.

If you have not downloaded the templates already, download the Finale-to-FreeHand templates from

Convert a Piano Score (Tutorial)In the previous section, you located the templates and copied them to the Template folder. You now can start converting your score into FreeHand format. Converting your score is a three-step process.

Note: This example exports pages into a TIFF format. However, you also can export pages into PNG, JPEG, GIF, PCX, or BMP graphic formats.

To convert a score:

1 Select a template and save it to a new file.

2 Copy and insert your Finale score into the template.

3 Export the score as a series of one-page TIFF graphic files.

Select a Template and Save It To a New FileTo convert Finale scores and for use on MusicPad Manager, choose a template that closely matches the score you want to export. In the example that follows, the Piano MPP template is selected.

To convert a score:

1 From the Finale menu bar, select File→New→Document From Template→FreeHand (or another location containing the templates). In the Open dialog box, select All Files from the Files of Type field.

2 Select the file Piano MPP and click Open. The template is displayed.

3 Save the file under a different name to avoid overwriting the template.

Copy and Insert Your Finale Score into the TemplateIn the previous section, you selected a template and have it ready to use with your score. In the example that follows, you will copy and insert your Finale score into the template file.

NOTE If you are using Finale from a Windows OS, select Tools→Advanced→Graphics from the Finale menu bar to display the Graphics menu.

To copy and insert your Finale score into the template:

1. Select File→Open from the menu bar to open the score you want to convert. The score is displayed.

1 Select Tools->Mass Edit from the menu bar.

2 Select Edit->Select All to select the entire score. Select Edit→Copy (or Ctrl+C) to copy.

NOTE If you are using Finale 2001 or Finale 2002, select Tools→Mass Mover instead of Tools→Mass Edit.

NOTE You can extract a single part or a group of parts from a score. To extract a part, select Tools->Mass Edit from the menu bar. Select the instruments or vocals in your score by clicking (or shift-clicking) to the left of the first bar of each part; then go to Step 3. If you need a template that more closely matches the extracted parts, see Table 1 on page 103 for a list of template names and descriptions.

3 Minimize your score to display the FreeHand template you saved as a file. Click in this file. Select Edit→Select All to select the entire chorus and piano score. Then select Edit→Insert to insert the chorus and piano score into the new file. The score is displayed in the new file.

4 Delete the extra bar on the last page of the score. This is generated by the insertion.

5 Select Edit→Update Layout.

NOTE When you insert the piano score into the template, the error message Staff Style Conflict may be displayed. Ignore this error message. Also, if the file was created with another version of Finale, the following error message is displayed: The file was created with an earlier version of Finale. This file will be converted to Finale 2003. Ignore this error message.

6 Select File→File Info. Add title, composer, and copyright information and click OK. This information is now displayed in the score.

7 If necessary, reformat the new score.

8 Go to the next section, “Export the Score Into TIFF Format”.

Export the Score Into TIFF FormatIn the previous section, you copied and inserted the score into the new template file. In the example that follows, you will export the score into a series of one-page TIFF graphic files. The TIFF files can then be imported into MusicPad Manager.

To export the score into TIFF format:

1 Still working from the new score, click the Graphics Tool icon on the Finale tool bar and select Export Pages. The Export Pages dialog box is displayed.

2 In the Export Pages dialog box, modify the fields as follows:

• Type to TIFF.

• Pages to All.

• Check the Generate Names From field and change the path name to another folder, as necessary.

• TIFF Resolution to 72.

The TIFF graphic files are generated using the first five letters of the file you specify in the Generate Names From field. For the two-page score in this example, two TIFF files were generated—Prelu001 and Prelu002. The files were placed in folder C:\My Documents\My Sheet Music.

3 Click OK. A TIFF graphic file of each page in the score is generated. In our example, we generated two files.

4 Go to the next section,“Import the TIFF Files into MusicPad Manager”.

Import the TIFF Files into MusicPad ManagerIn the previous section, you exported the Finale score into TIFF files. In this example, you import the TIFF files into MusicPad Manager to create a new score.

To import the TIFF files:


2 Select File→Import. Select all the TIFF graphic files. Mouse-click on the first file; then press Shift and mouse-click on the last file. In the following screen, the graphic files selected are Prelu001 to Prelu002.

3 Click Open. The Import Options dialog box is displayed.

4 In the Import Options dialog box, modify the fields as follows:

• Uncheck Convert to grayscale and sharpen.

• Select Create new FreeHand file.

• Select Browse and locate the folder you want to contain the score.

• Enter the Title, Composer, Copyright, and Instrument.5 Click OK. The imported score is displayed.

Learning about ScanningThere are many choices when it comes to scanners, scanning software, and graphic editing programs. All are different and provide results of various qualities. For information about your scanner, scanning software, or graphic editing programs, refer to the documentation that accompanied those products.

General Scanning GuidelinesCommercial music is produced using different page dimensions. The following equations help you understand the relationship of the MusicPad Pro’s tablet display dimensions to your score’s dimensions:

The MusicPad Pro display has the following dimensions:

• Display width = 598 pixels

• Display height = 798 pixels

To set your scanner’s resolution, divide the MusicPad Pro pixel height and width by the height and width of your score. In example, for a score measuring 8" x 10.5":

• Height = 798÷ 10.5 = 76 DPI

• Width = 598÷ 8 = 74.75 DPI

Take the lesser of the two values and scan the 8" x 10.5" score at 75 DPI. Set the output type to grayscale format; then save the file into PNG, JPEG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, or PCX graphic format.

Scanning ExampleThis example shows how to scan the score Prelude, Opus 28, no. 7 by Chopin.

To scan the score:

1 Preview the score you want to scan in your scanning software.

2 Use the sizing tool to eliminate the excess margin space around your score. The score requires little margin to be comfortably viewed on your MusicPad Pro.

3 The scanning area ia displayed in the bottom right corner. The scanning area is 7.86" x 9.21".

4 Calculate the resolution you need to set. Divide the scanning area height and width by MusicPad Pro’s display height and width.

Height = 798 ÷ 9.21= 86.64 DPI

Width = 598 ÷ 7.86 = 76.08 DPI

Use the lesser of the two values and set your resolution. For this example, the resolution is set to 76 DPI.

5 Set the output type to grayscale or another output setting that creates a compact graphic file.

6 Save each page of the score as a JPEG, PCX, GIF, PNG, BMP, or TIFF graphic file.

Include a page number in the file name to import the files into MusicPad Manager as a batch, recreating the page sequence. If there are more than 10 pages in the score, start numbering your files at 01.

The score is saved in a series of graphic files. See “Import the Score Graphic Files into MusicPad Manager” on page 117.

Import the Score Graphic Files into MusicPad Manager

In the previous section, you learned about scanning your score and creating graphic files. In this example, you import the graphic files into MusicPad Manager to create a new score.

To import the graphic files:


2 Select File→Import. Select all the graphic files. Mouse-click on the first file; then select-shift and mouse-click on the last file.

Note: Scan quality can be compromised when the scanning software includes paper texture or paper color as part of the image. Check your scanner for settings that can reduce or eliminate this problem.

To learn how to import graphic files into MusicPad Manager, read this section. If you already know how to import graphic files into MusicPad Manager, see “Advanced Scanning and Image-Editing” on page 120.

3 Click Open. The Import Options dialog box is displayed.

4 In the Import Options dialog box, modify the fields as follows:

Sometimes an image imports better when you check Convert to grayscale and sharpen in the Import Options dialog box. You may want to import one page with this setting checked, then import another with the setting unchecked. Compare the results and import the remaining graphic files with the best results.

7 Select Tools→Sheet Information. The dimensions of the score are displayed.

8 If the page is more than 598 pixels wide or 798 pixels high, select Edit→Edit Cropping from the MusicPad Manager menu bar to display the cropping tool. Use the cropping tool to reduce the score margins so the image won’t be compressed to fit the dimensions of the MusicPad Pro display screen.

Advanced Scanning and Image-EditingIf you are interested in producing high-quality images and have Jasc Paint Shop Pro™, Adobe Illustrator™, or another graphics program that contains more imaging options, you can create excellent results.

If you’re familiar with scanning and image-editing, use the following steps to convert your score:

• Scan your image at double the DPI, creating a 2x-sized image.

• Correct any skew—even a 1-degree variation can cause image distortion on your MusicPad Pro. Correcting the skew necessary if you want to use the score lines on your MusicPad Pro.

• Crop the image to remove any unnecessary white space.

• Scale the image by approximately 50 percent, with the length of the score measuring 800 pixels and the width of the score measuring 600 pixels or less.

• Reduce the output size to 3-bit (8 colors).

• Save the file in a JPEG, PCX, GIF, PNG, BMP, or TIFF graphic file format.

Advanced Scanning ExampleThe image-editing program Jasc Paint Shop Pro, Release 7.0, is used to illustrate this example. Instructions assume that your scanner is already connected to your computer.

1 Place the first page of the score you want to import into FreeHand format on your scanner.

2 Open Paint Shop Pro.

3 Select File→Import→Twain→Acquire.

4 The Scan Mode Settings dialog box is displayed. Set the options to scan your image at double the DPI, creating a double-sized image. Click Scan at the bottom of the page.

5 The scanned score is displayed in Paint Shop Pro. Notice that the image is not perfectly horizontal, but slightly skewed. The left side of the scores dips lower than the right side.

6 To correct the skew:

• Draw a bounding box around the skewed area. As you follow the directions below to rotate the image, use the horizontal line of the bounding box as a guide to align the score lines.

• Select Image→Rotate and select the Direction and Degrees for correction. In the score below, a correction of .4 degrees was made to the right.

• Repeat the step above until the score lines align with the horizontal line of the bounding box.

If you want to manipulate the score lines on the MusicPad Pro, you should correct any skew in your score before importing the image into FreeHand format. If you do not intend to manipulate the score lines in the score, you do not need to need correct the skew.

7 To crop your image, click the Cropping icon and select the area to be cropped.

8 Select Image→Resize. Resize the image by approximately 50 percent, with the length of the score measuring 798 pixels and the width of the score measuring 598 pixels or less. Select Resize type→Bicubic resample. Click OK.

Appendix D

• • • • • • Safety and Regulatory Information

Your FreeHand Systems MusicPad is designed and tested to meet the latest standards for safety of information technology equipment. However, to ensure safe use of this product, it is important that the safety instructions marked on the product and in the documentation are followed.

Setting Up Your System• Read and follow all instructions marked on the product and in the

accompanying documentation before operating the system. Retain all safety and operating instructions for future reference.

• Do not use this product near water or a heat source.

• Set up the system on a stable work surface.

• The product should be operated only from the type of power source indicated on the rating label.

• Openings in the MusicPad case are provided for ventilation. Do not cover or block these openings. Make sure you provide adequate space around the system. Never try to insert objects of any kind into the case or attempt to remove the cover.

• The MusicPad is shipped with a power cord and power supply that comes with a 3-prong plug. The plug will fit only into a grounding type outlet. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the plug into an outlet you may need to contact an electrician to install an appropriate outlet if a suitable one can not easily be found.

• Use an extension cord with this system make sure that the total ampere rating on the products plugged into the extension cord does not exceed the extension cord rating.

Care During Use• Do not walk on the power cord or allow anything to rest on it.

• Do not spill anything on the system.

• The product does not have user-serviceable batteries. The unit must be returned to the distributor or the factory for replacement.

• When the unit is turned off, a small amount of electrical current still flows through the system. To avoid electrical shock, always unplug all cables from the unit when not charging or cleaning the touch screen.

• Unplug the system and refer servicing to qualified personnel if:

→ The power cord is damaged

→ The system does not operate properly when the operating instructions are followed

→ The system was dropped or the case damaged
