Three times a ‘fi rst’ for Breman

In March 2014, Breman Machinery BV based in Genemuiden, the Netherlands,

was awarded a contract for the fabrication of a weather-vaning, tanker offloading

buoy for installation on the Egina Oil field development project offshore Nigeria,

operated by Total Upstream Nigeria.

August this year. The bouy itself must be installed offshore Nigeria in February 2017. The Egina field is expected to come on stream in 2018.”

Breman Machinery turned from a black smid to a highly sophisticated steel delivery company in the Netherlands, having been founded in 1864. With continuous investment in its facilities, the company has provided fabrication services to the offshore oil and gas and renewables industries since the 1970s. Gnodde: “Our modern fabrication facilities include heavy duty machining and rolling equipment, blast and paint shops and extensive assembly areas. In total around 40 members of our professional workforce are working on this unique turret system.”

The whole fabrication process in Genemuiden is constantly monitored by one Bureau Veritas surveyor, two Total Upstream Nigeria representatives and four National Oilwell Varco experts.

The turret system, designed and engineered by National Oilwell Varco from Norway with certifying authority Bureau Veritas, comprises the buoy hull, the fixed turret with mooring and riser terminations, fluid transfer system including swivel, all piping and valves as well as the control system and mooring equipment. Breman’s scope of work includes project management, detailed shop-engineering, procurement, onshore fabrication, precise machining, assembly, testing and pre-commissioning. Project manager Jacob Gnodde: “Not only is this a unique design, which has not been fabricated before in the world, it is also the first time for Breman to be involved in such an innovative project, and it is our first contract awarded by National Oilwell Varco. Due to all these aspects the shop drawing engineering process of the design was quite intensive and we commenced with the actual fabrication of the buoy in our facilities in August 2015 with delivery scheduled in early

Egina Oil Field

The Egina oil fi eld is located 150km

off the coast of Nigeria. The fi eld is

being developed by Total Upstream

Nigeria (24%) in partnership with

CNOOC (45%), Sapetro (15%) and

Petrobras (16%). Egina is the third

deep offshore development of

Total in Nigeria. Located about

20km away from Akpo fi eld,

Egina fi eld lies within the oil mining

lease block (OML) 130 and covers

an area of around 500 square miles.

It is situated at a water depth

of up to 1,750m.

The Egina fi eld infrastructure

will include an FPSO unit, an oil

offl oading terminal and subsea

production systems such as risers,

52km of oil and water injection

fl owlines, 12 fl exible jumpers,

20km of gas export pipelines, 80km

of umbilicals, and subsea manifolds.

Total began the development of

a new FPSO for the project. The

FPSO will measure approximately

330m in length, 61m in width and

33.5m in depth, and is expected

to have an oil storage capacity of

approximately 2.3 million barrels.

The FPSO will have topsides

modules with a gross dry weight

of 34,000t.

KABELLEGGEN

Tideway zal voor dit project DEME’s nieuwe kabellegschip ‘Living Stone’ inzetten. Dit uiterst geavanceerde schip, dat zal worden voorzien van een klasse 3 Dynamisch Positioneringssysteem, wordt momenteel gebouwd op de werf LaNaval nabij Bilbao, Spanje. Oplevering van de ‘Living Stone’, uitgerust met dual fuel-motoren met LNG als hoofdbrandstof, is gepland voor april 2017.

Het contract omvat het leggen van drie hoogspanningskabels en twee verbindingskabels, pre-trenching, backfilling, terrein- en trajectvoor-

bereiding en steenstortwerk. De subsea hoogspanningskabels moeten worden gelegd vanaf drie verschillende offshore substations naar de kust. De kabels zullen door Tideway ter hoogte van Horseshoe Point, meteen ten zuiden van de monding van de Humber, aan land worden gebracht. De verbindingskabels van respectievelijk 13 km en 14 km lengte, moeten worden gelegd tussen de drie substations onderling.

Vanwege de uitzonderlijke lengte van het trio exportkabels (resp. 134 km, 140 km en 152 km) moet DONG Energy tussen de drie substations en de kust een speciaal platform installeren om het reactief vermogen te compenseren.

De werkzaamheden aan het offshore project beginnen in 2017 met de trajectstudie, en de laatste exportkabel zal midden 2019 gelegd en beschermd worden.

DONG Energy bouwt het enorme Hornsea Project One offshore windturbinepark voor de kust van Yorkshire (UK). Eenmaal in productie zal het park meer dan 1 miljoen huizen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk van stroom voorzien.

Met een oppervlakte van ongeveer 407 vierkante kilometer en een capaciteit van 1,2 gigawatt (GW) wordt Hornsea Project One het eerste offshore windturbinepark ter wereld dat meer dan 1 GW vermogen levert en is daarmee - met ruime voorsprong – het grootste offshore windturbinepark ter wereld.

Hugo Bouvy en Lucas Bols, directeurs bij Tideway, zeggen: “Wij zijn verheugd dat wij onze relatie met DONG Energy kunnen uitbreiden van de offshore olie- en gasmarkt naar offshore windenergie. Dit is een belangrijk contract, waarvoor het hoogst innovatieve, modulaire systeem voor kabels en ‘umbilicals’ aan boord van ons ultramoderne nieuwe kabellegschip ‘Living Stone’ een centrale rol speelt. Dit contract bevestigt het vertrouwen van DONG Energy in de capaciteiten van ons ‘dedicated engineering’ team en zijn vernieuwende oplossingen. De ‘Living Stone’ is uniek, met een kabelcapaciteit van 10.000 ton verdeeld over twee onderdekse haspels, waardoor het schip perfect is voor dit uitdagende project. MAERSK’S SSVS GET SMST CRANES

SMST, a specialist in design and construction of offshore equipment, has been awarded a contract for the delivery of two additional 100t Knuckle Boom Cranes for Maersk Supply Service’s four Subsea Support Vessels (SSVs), being built by COSCO (Dalian) Shipyard.

SMST announced today that the order is a sequel to two previously ordered SMST Knuckle Boom Cranes via main contractor Huisman.Huisman secured the contract for the delivery of four 400t Hybrid Boom Cranes and two SMST Knuckle Boom Cranes on board the SSVs in December 2014.The two cranes with Active Heave Compensation will be installed on Maersk’s Subsea Support Vessels 3 and 4 which are, according to SMST, scheduled for delivery in 1Q and 2Q 2017. The vessels are of a Marin Teknikk MT 6027 design. SMST stated that the cranes are designed for a large range of deck, offshore and subsea operations up to 3000m water depth.

The AHC Knuckle Boom Crane is part of a wide range of SMST offshore cranes up to 150t. The cranes can be outfitted in different configurations: knuckle boom, telescopic boom, fixed boom, rail mounted and with 3D motion compensated module.

HMC NAMES NEW CCO

Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) has appointed Harke Jan Meek in the position of chief commercial officer (CCO) as per June 1, 2016. In this capacity Harke Jan Meek will be member of the HMC board and be responsible for the commercial and technology departments.

Meek was appointed senior vice president commercial in October 2013 after having started his career with HMC in commercial and business development roles for SURF projects.Before joining HMC, he worked in business development functions for SBM Offshore and on LNG projects for Shell. Harke Jan Meek holds an MSc degree in offshore engineering from Delft University of Technology and an MBA from the University of Texas.

LIFE TIME EXTENSION OF BALDER

Heerema Marine contractors launched a life time extension program for the Balder, one of their deepwater construction vessels. Bakker Sliedrecht plays a vital role, working on three key projects of this life time extension program that is taking place on the Caland Canal in Holland. The three projects are connected with each other, but all have their own responsible contractor. A challenge for Bakker Sliedrecht’s project management: be the linking pin in three complex projects to realize a working end result.

For Huisman, Bakker Sliedrecht is acting as a subcontractor for the electrical hook up of the J-lay installation, which we overhauled and upgraded with Huisman in 2013 and 2014 in Holland. During the Balder’s transit from the Gulf of Mexico to the project location in Holland we already retrofitted all tower related drives and controls on board the vessel. This included renewing the cabling, replacing obsolete parts, overhauling several control panels, and overhauling the fiber optic network.

Together with IHC SAS, Bakker Sliedrecht is working on the electrical hook-up of the pipe handling installation on deck. This installation will handle all pipe sections during the welding process before they are loaded into the J-lay pipe installation.

For Heerema, Bakker Sliedrecht is extending the life time of the Balder’s main electrical installations. We are replacing obsolete components of seven drive systems, renewing multiple power distribution switchboards and carrying out a preventive maintenance program for the Balder’s thruster drive systems.

We are also taking care of Lloyd’s 5 year survey of the high voltage distribution, involving the dynamic positioning system.

Both electrical hook-ups have crucial stages which require a lot of demanding jobs done in little time. For this reason, all parties have drawn up an integrated project and execution planning together in the last years.

DEEPOCEAN AWARDED EPRD CONTRACT

Mid April DeepOcean has been awarded a contract for provision of Engineering, Procurement, Removal and Disposal (EPRD) of Varg Subsea facilities by Repsol Norge AS. The scope of work cover subsea pre-decom survey, recovery of FPSO mooring lines, anchor piles, risers, midwater-arch buoy and subsea structures as well as onshore disposal and recycling of the recovered items.

NIEUWE CEO REDWAVE

Per 1 mei 2016 zal John Herfkens aantreden als nieuwe CEO van RedWave. Herfkens volgt hiermee de huidige topvrouw Trudy Zonneveld op die na 26 jaar afscheid neemt van RedWave.

Herfkens was eerder in zijn carrière werkzaam voor onder andere KLM, Transavia, USG Innotiv, Falck Safety Services en Greenberg Traurig en brengt hiermee een schat aan ervaring mee. Herfkens zal in zijn nieuwe rol verder richting geven aan de groeiambities van RedWave.

DEN HELDER

De verwachting is dat de ingebruikname van Kooyhaven zorgt voor een sterke impuls voor de lokale economie van Den Helder. Het terrein biedt bedrijven de mogelijkheid te ondernemen aan het water en activiteiten te ontplooien, die direct in het verlengde liggen van de activiteiten in de zeehaven. Hierbij profiteren de bedrijven van de

efficiënte verbinding van het gebied met de regionale logistieke keten in het achterland.

De gemeenten Den Helder en Hollands Kroon en de provincie Noord-Holland zijn allen betrokken bij de ontwikkeling van Kooyhaven. Zo zijn er afspraken gemaakt met het Hoogheemraadschap over de

dijkverlegging, met de provincie als vaarwegbeheerder, met Rijkswaterstaat als wegbeheerder en met de Fietsersbond over de ontsluiting van de Kooyhaven en de kruising van een belangrijke fietsroute. Het Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Milieu verstrekte de gemeente Hollands Kroon van een subsidie ten behoeve van Kooyhaven.

STERKE IMPULS VOOR LOKALE ECONOMIE

Verankering eerste damwand van Kooyhaven in Kop van Noord-Holland

Onder toeziend oog van een select aantal genodigden is recent de eerste damwand verankerd van de Kooyhaven.

Met het verankeren van de damwand is een nieuwe fase aangebroken in de ontwikkeling van Kooyhaven,

waarmee eind januari werd gestart.

horizon. We mogen er van uit gaan, dat de olie- en gasindustrie zich op termijn herstelt. Daarnaast worden de plannen voor wind op zee steeds concreter. Het voelt goed dat onze regio is voorbereid op deze ontwikkelingen en met de Kooyhaven uitstekende vestigingsmogelijkheden biedt. Er is in de regio veel bestuurlijk draagvlak om door te investeren in de haven van Den Helder, omdat het een banenmotor voor de Kop van Noord-Holland is.”

Ontwikkeling Port of Den HelderKooyhaven ligt direct ten zuiden van de N99 en ten oosten van de N9 in de Kop van Noord-Holland, nabij de zeehaven Den Helder. Dankzij de ligging aan het Noordhollandsch Kanaal staat het bedrijventerrein in directe verbinding

Nu het politiek kader voor de samenwerking in de Noordzee-regio is geschetst, is het belangrijk dat de industrie in actie komt.

Kooyhaven is onderdeel van de verdere uitbreiding en ontwikkeling van Port of Den Helder, die afnemer van de grond is. Algemeen directeur Jacoba Bolderheij: “Met dit nieuwe terrein bouwen we voortvarend verder aan de ontwikkeling van Den Helder als offshore hub voor de Noordzee. Deze ontwikkeling is niet alleen gunstig voor de economische toekomstontwikkeling van de stad maar voor de hele economie in regio Noord-Holland Noord. Port of Den Helder is daarom verheugd dit nieuwe terrein te ontwikkelen. We zien uit de offshore positie verder uit te bouwen.”

Hans Timmers, voorzitter van de raad van bestuur van NWEA en Jo Peters, secretaris-generaal van NOGEPA zijn overtuigd van de voordelen van gezamenlijke inspanningen. Daarom hebben ze samen met de andere ondertekenaars van het Manifest een stuurgroep gevormd om de gezamenlijke mogelijkheden verder te onderzoeken. De stuurgroep werkt nauw samen met het MVI-E Lab van de Topsector Energie waaraan vele betrokkenen bij ontwikkelingen op de Noordzee deelnemen, zoals de scheepvaart, havens, visserij, natuur, landbouw en anderen om uiteindelijk te komen tot een integrale duurzame visie met breed draagvlak.

now hanging still and therefore it is safe to lift, while creating a far greater utilization rate of the vessel, as well as eliminating the need for platform mounted cranes. The unique patented ‘on-board lifting’ functionality allows safe connection of the load on the deck as there is no swinging of the hook and no relative heave. The BM-T40 has a very small footprint, leaving all deck space for cargo.

UniqueAs already stated in the introduction of this article the BM-T40 motion compensated crane enables users to lift safely from a moving vessel to an offshore installation. This unique piece of equipment eliminates motions at the base of the crane allowing work to continue safely in higher sea-states, eliminating the need for platform cranes and reducing costs significantly. The system is a vessel mounted motion compensated knuckle boom crane. Motions of the vessel are compensated in 3 degrees of freedom: roll/pitch/heave. This is done inside a high-tech pedestal and results in no swinging of the load, no relative heave motion causing snatch loads and re-bounce. The vessel motions are compensated up to 3m significant wave height, which means 6 meter waves can be encountered while work can continue safely. This creates workable weather for more than 90% of the year on the North Sea. The system is designed for lifting loads of 15mT at 10m radius and 5mT at 20m radius, up to 45 meters above the waterline. The T40 can be used to lift various loads from the floating vessel to a fixed platform. The whole system is man-riding certified, so personnel can also be transferred. The system is hydraulically actuated and is controlled by real-time controllers that use vessel motions as input parameters. Redundancy is applied to all critical components assuring safe motion compensated offshore lifting. The BM-T40 is certified by Lloyd’s Register as Offshore Lifting Appliance. As the whole crane is compensated and the crane driver is also stationary, he/she can oversee the operation and position a load very accurately. The whole operation including lifts from the vessel, transferring to an offshore platform and subsequently placing the load onto the platform is executed safer, quicker, more efficient and at lower cost.

Significant cost savingActive heave compensated cranes already existed. Compensation in this one degree of freedom works fine for sub-sea works but is not suitable to lift loads onto platforms at large heights while experiencing vessel motions due the waves/swell. With the BM-T40 this becomes possible because the load is

eliminating APEX but also significant OPEX (up to 1 million euro’s per crane per year). Work can continue safely up to Hs=3m, creating >90% workability in the North-Sea conditions. Thanks to our ‘walk to work package’ which includes the crane plus a compensated gangway, high-risk and costly helicopter flights are eliminated as well as the crew works from the vessel with more effective hours/day. Helidecks can be removed/not installed and expensive jack-up rigs are no longer needed for maintenance and well work overs. Above reduces the costs for production a lot, making it feasible to exploit more fields and also smaller fields or keeping them in production longer, even with current low oil prices!”

Huisman recently acquired stakes in two start-ups, allowing them to achieve further growth. One is Fistuca, a dynamic company that is developing solutions for the foundation industry. The other is Tocardo Tidal Turbines, producers of tidal and free-flow water turbines for generating clean energy.

TocardoAs Terence Vehmeijer, Huisman’s Product Manager Pipelay, explained: “By using our in-depth knowledge of the offshore industry and our expertise with offshore equipment, we at Huisman see huge

potential for both of these highly innovative technologies. Tocardo is a company that harvests clean and sustainable energy for future generations, and is one of the partners in the unique Bluetec collaborative venture, alongside such companies as Bluewater, Damen, Van Oord and Vryhof. The first Tocardo test turbine was installed in 2005, followed in 2010 by the installation of a commercial turbine. The company has been fully commercial since 2012, when the first turbines were sold to Nepal and Japan. Last year, Tocardo installed five tidal turbines in the

Dutch storm surge barrier on the Eastern Scheldt estuary, for the generation of clean energy. The installation is the largest tidal energy project in the Netherlands, and the world’s largest commercial tidal installation, comprising five turbines in a single array. Tocardo is in a position to become leader in the tidal energy market, but achieving that status requires large investments, realistic rates for tidal energy and a touch of idealism. hammers, and instead utilises a resource abundantly available offshore …. water! Instead of using a steel ram to hit the pile, BLUE Piling Technology uses the combustion of a gas mixture beneath a water column to create a rise in pressure. This pressure accelerates the water upwards, in turn causing a downward force that pushes the pile into the soil. The water column then falls back down, delivering a second blow. The exhaust gases are released and the cycle is repeated.

BLUE Piling Technology is environmentally friendly for a number of reasons. It does

currently supporting the project financially and with expertise, because we believe in the future of tidal energy and see great Dutch export opportunities.”

BLUE pilingJasper Winkes is the founder of Fistuca. He developed the patented so-called BLUE Piling Technology. This revolutionary technology allows the silent installation of large-diameter steel piles offshore and as such is expected to significantly reduce the foundation installation costs for offshore wind turbines. The technology breaks with the tradition of using large impact

not use oil to power the hammer; it generates much lower underwater noise levels than a conventional hydraulic hammer; it minimises pile fatigue and it has a safe and robust setup, with full maintenance options on board. One positive side effect of this technology, which has been tested on an offshore test pile owned by Heerema, is that it allows very large concrete piles to be driven into the soil, without generating harmful tensile stresses. Great scalability will even allow the world’s largest piles to be driven, using BLUE Piling Technology. There is already huge interest in the system, from all over the world.

Hoe wil Gasunie de energietransitie versnellen en welke rol speelt Gasunie New Energy daarbij?

“Gasunie onderscheidt voor de toekomst drie werkterreinen. Als eerste meer vervuilende fossiele bronnen vervangen door aardgas. Bijvoorbeeld gas in plaats van kolen, maar ook LNG als vervanger van stookolie in de scheepvaart. Het tweede werkgebied gaat over hoe je het aandeel hernieuwbaar gas in de energiemix kunt vergroten. Dan heb je het over biogas maar ook over waterstof en synthetisch gas. Het derde terrein betreft systeemintegratie, kijken hoe je energiebronnen en energiedragers maximaal met elkaar kunt laten samenwerken om tot een efficiënte en duurzame energiemix te komen. De laatste twee onderwerpen, hernieuwbaar gas in de energiemix en systeemintegratie, zijn het werkgebied van Gasunie New Energy. Overigens zijn ook andere collega’s binnen Gasunie met transitieversnelling bezig. Bijvoorbeeld door efficiënte warmte-technologieën

heeft gedaan. Dat kan zijn de slimme vent die in zijn garage een bepaald concept bedacht, of een grotere partij die voor de uitrol van een nieuwe technologie op zoek is naar strategische partners. Onze rol is daarbij die van de onafhankelijke infrastructuurpartner, de enabler - nooit die van producent. Voor de rest verschilt het sterk per project. Bij hernieuwbaar gas wordt die keuze bijvoorbeeld bepaald door de vraag waar je dat gas van gaat maken. Dat kan elektriciteit zijn, dus power to gas, maar ook biomassa. De partner die je kiest kan helpen die input af te dekken. Maar ook de afzetkant moet afgedekt worden: hoe krijg je langjarig een partij aan boord die belang heeft bij de inkoop van hernieuwbaar gas? Bij een project voor bio-LNG doet een transportbedrijf mee. Bij synthetisch gas als vervanger van aardgas moet je denken aan partijen in de chemie. Ieder project vergt dus een eigen aanpak, met een eigen consortium en verdienmodel. Dat is een waaier aan uitdagingen waar mijn team de tanden in heeft gezet.”

Hoe zit het met de financiering?

“De onvoorspelbaarheid van dit soort projecten is ongunstig voor de financierbaarheid ervan. Voor banken is het om die reden moeilijk in die fase mee te doen. Terwijl je voor die eerste serieuze opschaling relatief veel kapitaal nodig hebt en je voorlopig nog met een lagere output zit dan in je ideaalmodel. Partijen die wel samen willen werken, doen dat daarom vooral vanuit een bepaalde visie op langere termijn. Maar hoe waardeer je in het hier en nu de energie die we in zo’n project straks gaan produceren? Daar zitten nog zoveel onzekerheden in. Hoe het er over 10 of 15 jaar uitziet, valt niet te voorspellen. Maar ondertussen zit je, inclusief het vergunnings- en subsidietraject, al gauw op een jaar of zeven voordat je iets op serieuzere schaal neer hebt kunnen zetten. Je strategische partners moeten al die tijd dus ook betrokken blijven. Dat lukt niet altijd. Het is voorgekomen dat partijen die vijf jaar geleden bereid waren te investeren die beslissing later terugdraaiden omdat ze moesten saneren. Dan ben je dus opeens een partner kwijt en moet je bijna weer van voren af aan beginnen. Het is hard werken om in de hoofdfilm van straks ook een rol te kunnen spelen, zeggen we weleens.”

Hoe belangrijk is subsidie?

“Er is een aantal subsidie-instrumenten dat de uiteindelijke grote investerings-trajecten dekt. Maar voor dit soort

Hoe gaat Gasunie New Energy te werk?

“Gasunie New Energy bestaat sinds 2014. Als team bekijken we hoe je nieuwe technologieën en concepten, die zich op kleine schaal hebben bewezen, samen met partners kunt opschalen naar een commerciële toepassing. De afgelopen twee jaar kwamen er zo een vijftigtal projecten ter tafel. In een ketenstructuur brengen we die steeds een stapje verder in de besluitvorming. In dat traject valt een groot deel af. Een tiental projecten bevindt zich in de uitgebreide assessment fase en bij vijf projecten zijn we zover dat we er samen met partners echt verder mee willen. Zoals vergassing van biomassa, als belangrijke potentiële bron van hernieuwbaar gas.”

Is die waaier van kleine projecten niet heel andere koek dan wat Gasunie gewend is?

“Klopt. Gasunie is op het gebied van aardgas een autoriteit en gewend aan grote projecten waarmee veel geld is gemoeid, maar waarvan we de marktvraag kennen. Gasunie New Energy heeft met een waaier van kleinschalige projecten met veel meer onzekerheden te maken. Bij ieder project kan het zo zijn dat je voor een bepaald concept koos maar een jaar later wordt ingehaald door een nieuwe technologie. Dat wil dan niet zeggen dat waar je mee bezig was niet is gelukt. Maar je moet dan wel kijken naar hoe je op een andere manier vervolgstappen kunt zetten. Die opschaling van kleine nieuwe concepten en tussentijds telkens de bakens verzetten, is niet alleen voor Gasunie nieuw, maar voor de hele traditionele energie-industrie. Nieuwe technologieën volgen elkaar in snel tempo op. Veel innovatie komt ook van buiten de conventionele energiesector. Daarnaast heb je ook te maken met de context waarbinnen je opereert. Die verschuift voortdurend. Neem bijstook van biomassa. In het Energieakkoord zijn daarover afspraken gemaakt. Maar je ziet dat de maatschappelijke discussie daar nu zodanig wordt aangezet dat je je moet afvragen in hoeverre die nog wel houdbaar zijn. Dit kan een wezenlijke impact hebben op het energielandschap en specifieke projecten.”

Met wat voor partners gaat Gasunie New Energy in zee?

“Sowieso met de partij die de innovatie

innovatieprojecten, waarbij het zich nog in de opschalingsfase bevindt, heb je ook productiesubsidie nodig. Het lastige is dat de SDE subsidie uitgaat van bestaande technologieën. Die ademt om zo te zeggen niet mee met innovaties. Er is behoefte aan een aangepast subsidie-instrument. Minister Kamp zette eind april zijn handtekening onder de Green Deal Business voor biomassa en biobased gas, samen met Gasunie en nog een aantal koplopers van het duurzame bedrijfsleven. Doel daarvan is ook om te onderzoeken wat er voor nodig is om tot rendabele projecten te komen.”

Hoe staat het met het project voor vergassing van biomassa?

“Daar zit een dedicated team op, want daarin zetten we met partner Torrgas nu grote stappen met ook veel potentieel. Het gaat om vergassing van getorrificeerde biomassa met als grondstof houtachtig afval. Bij Hoogkerk hebben we een proeffabriek staan met een thermisch vermogen van 0,5 megawatt, maar deze zomer willen de investeringsbeslissing nemen voor een plant van 25 MW bij Delfzijl. Met het synthetisch gas dat we er maken, kun je sectoren vergroenen die niet met zon en wind zijn te verduurzamen, zoals de chemie. Dat gaat een heel belangrijke rol worden voor gasvormige energiedragers: duurzame oplossingen bieden in moeilijk te verduurzamen sectoren. Industrieën kunnen dan voor de productie van eigen grondstoffen van aardgas overstappen op dat synthetisch gas. In dit project heeft Gasunie tussentijds haar visie aangepast. Drie jaar geleden was het plan nog het synthetisch gas op te werken naar aardgaskwaliteit voor invoering in ons leidingnet. Dat zou een directe benefit voor Gasunie zelf zijn geweest. Maar vervolgens kozen we toch voor directe levering van het synthetisch gas aan de chemie. Want dat scheelt een heleboel energie die je anders zou kwijt zijn geweest aan de opwerking naar aardgaskwaliteit. Het gaat er uiteindelijk om, hebben we gezegd, dat je hernieuwbaar gas energetisch gezien zo efficiënt mogelijk inzet. En als dat betekent dat het dan niet door ons eigen systeem heen gaat, dan is dat maar zo. Flexibele business development en werken vanuit voortschrijdend inzicht is kenmerkend voor New Energy. Je werkt voor de troepen uit. Soms zet je een stap terug, maar alles bij elkaar betekent het dat je al doende geweldig veel kennis en ervaring verzamelt. En die hebben we hard nodig om een CO2-neutrale energievoorziening te maken. Dat is heel motiverend!”

Iran, currently the place to be. As sanctions have been lifted, Iran has become a hot topic within the offshore energy industry. The country boasts 70 per cent of the world’s total oil reservoirs and 40 per cent of the world’s gas resources. Furthermore, Iran hold the largest hydrocarbon reservoirs in the world and 9.3 per cent of the world’s total gas reserves, making the country the alternative gas-supplier to Europe. To tap this potential, a large investment of around 185 billion dollars is required within the next five years, to allow for fleet renovation, already announced by the Iranian government, as well as technological innovation and solutions.

Offshore Energy has announced the cooperation with CBC and as such the development of the Iran Pavilion as well as the technical conference sessions focused on Iran. The Iran pavilion is one of many pavilions, including Holland (NMT), AYOP, Den Helder, China and Italy.

Knowledge management There is lots to discuss about the smart use of data and the different themes within knowledge management. During the Offshore Energy a technical session on Knowledge Management will address the importance of knowledge within the oil and gas industry. Knowledge management is a hot topic in the industry and Rob van der Spek (Global Lead Knowledge Management & Road Mapping Competence Centre DNV GL) knows all about it. He says: “Effective Knowledge management requires combining smart technology, processes, various disciplines and people within projects and organizations. Bringing together these elements in a focused way should enable companies to reduce the so-called costs of ignorance.”

Smart use “There are several themes within knowledge management for the oil and gas industry,” continues Van der Spek.

“First of all, companies want to know how they can collect and share their experiences. How can they retain the lessons learned during an operation, how can they collectively share these experiences, and, most important, use them again during future operations and projects? This should contribute to creating a safer, more effective and cost-efficient industry, on the CAPEX as well as the OPEX side as well as geographically. Regulators increasingly pressure companies to demonstrate that they have mature systems and processes for systematic learning from experiences, especially after the Macondo incident. This is especially important when assets are being transferred between owners and the new owners should demonstrate that they have the required competencies for a license to operate.”

Critical knowledgeAnother important theme is that due to the downturn, much experience will

leave the industry. Van der Spek says: “Yes, the many cut-backs are causing a vast knowledge exodus in the sector. Next to that is the issue that the average age within the industry is relatively high, resulting in even more knowledge loss. How can the employees who remain within the company still build on that experience? The realistic answer is that it is impossible to retain all knowledge and experience. A company must decide what critical knowledge is and which knowledge is less critical, or which knowledge is readily available on the market when needed. This critical knowledge must be managed properly within the company and retained for future operations. Companies are well aware of the so-called learning curve but what about the impact of the forgetting curve?”

AssessmentMoving on to another theme, Van der Spek continues: “Knowledge about standards within the industry is also part of the equation. Each company builds on international standards but in addition companies have developed their own specific standards. The question is, which standards are absolutely necessary to guarantee safety and quality and which extra standards cost time and money without adding value? Specific standards might have been developed for good reasons in the past but companies now need to find opportunities to cut costs. A risk-based assessment of standards brings together knowledge of international standards as well as company specific standards and enables companies to weed out any added overzealous standards without compromising on safety and quality Regulatory Intelligence is an important enabler for lean operations.”

Big data “Big data is a hot topic in the business world and the oil and gas sector is no exception. I strongly believe that most added value will emerge when we combine operational data, i.e. from sensors but also information hidden in (daily) reports and log files with knowledge from skilled employees deeply rooted in the operations. We should use the power of our skilled staff and combine it with the power of computers and algorithms,” says Van der Spek. During the technical session on knowledge management Van der Spek will elaborate on how important knowledge management is within the current market, which is very much under pressure especially on the exploration side.

Van der Spek concludes: “I think it is common sense that learning from experiences is crucial for companies. However the main question is how to organize knowledge management in the most optimal way given the pressure on costs.”

RenewablesThe Offshore WIND Conference (OWC) will again be part of OEEC together with speakers from leading companies such as Dong, Siemens and Vattenfall. During OWC speakers from the industry will discuss how more business opportunities can be found and how the industry can reach potential.

More renewable knowledge can be garnered during the Marine Energy event, organized in partnership with EWA. Learn the latest on marine energy projects in test phase, marine energy solutions and large project development updates. Attending the event means you will meet industry leaders from international marine energy projects, environmental monitoring, testing infrastructure as well as from offshore safety and construction.

A new feature at OEEC is Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) symposium, which is an annual meeting that brings together the OTEC industry, researchers and market experts from all over the world. This year’s 4th International OTEC symposium will be co-hosted by the Offshore Energy 2016 and the TU Delft.

Opening Gala DinnerNew this year will be the first Offshore Energy Opening Gala Dinner which will take place on the evening prior to the official start of OEEC on Monday October 24th. This festive evening will takeplace at the impressive Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam.

In addition to a culinary dinner, musical interludes and speeches by dignitaries, the presentation of three awards will take place; The Best Innovation in Offshore Energy Award; The Offshore Energy Public Outreach Award; and the Offshore Energy Young Engineer Award.

Speaking to Offshore Visie Oddgeir Mælen says he believes it is no coincidence that Harding was selected to supply this latest Heerema project. “Harding lifeboats are the industry leaders, the boats chosen for the most demanding projects and benchmark vessels,” he points out.

For example, Harding supplied lifeboats to all the ships nominated for major Nordic shipping magazine Skipsrevyen’s “Ship of the Year” award for 2015, including the winner, the Skandi Africa. “Delivering to Heerema’s NSCV is yet another confirmation of the quality of our products and service,” Mælen states.

SecretWinning contracts in today’s trying times requires more than just good fortune, and Harding finds itself sitting on some of the biggest. What’s the secret? “Superior systems are the key to winning contracts, and we believe Harding quality is at the base of this success. But we also put in a lot of hours with both the yard and the owner right from the start on the Heerema project,” Mælen tells.

Heerema’s Sleipnir is one of just a handful of large offshore projects currently running, along with the Johan Sverdrup Field Centre in Norway, where Harding is also a supplier. “Everyone is talking about Sverdrup, but this project is every bit as big, with just as many systems,” says Harding’s regional sales manager Oddgeir Mælen. And while deliveries are essentially based on offshore technology, the Heerema contracts pose a special kind of challenge. “The new crane vessel will serve world-wide, so a number of relevant international standards had to be considered when selecting life saving equipment,” Mælen relates.

DNVThe FF1200 is a 70-person freefall lifeboat designed to DNV OS E-406 standards, the most stringent in the industry, far exceeding SOLAS rules for freefall lifeboats. The boats will be perfectly matched with their LA1200H and LA1200HO skid launch davits, specially designed for the FF1200.

“We listened to their concerns and came back with the best answers,” he explains, adding that Harding’s ability to draw on good local contacts, a strong global network and technical prowess was a determining factor.

In order to put together the best possible bid, we enlisted a high degree of participation from our offices in the Netherlands, in Singapore and in Norway,” says Mælen. “Access to this overall expertise allowed us to provide the most value for the money. KRAANSIMULATOR VOOR HUISMAN SINGAPORE

Huisman heeft onlangs een nieuwe 400mt Offshore Mastkraansimulator in gebruik genomen bij haar verkoop- en servicevestiging in Singapore. Deze kraansimulator zal gebruikt worden voor standaard en op maat gemaakte onderwijs- en trainings-doeleinden en voor expertonderzoek. Hiervoor kan gebruik gemaakt worden van een 400mt Offshore Mastkraan maar ook van de andere Huisman kraantypes. De nieuwe simulator combineert alle hoofdopties die beschikbaar zijn in de Huisman kranenreeks, zoals een ‘main hoist’ en ‘auxiliary hoist’, ‘tuggers’ en een deiningscompensatiesysteem. De werkzaamheden worden gesimuleerd met behulp van negen schermen en een authentieke operatorstoel met kraanbesturing om een zo realistisch mogelijke ervaring te laten beleven. Standaard is de simulator uitgerust als 400mt Offshore Mastkraan maar dit kan op verzoek worden aangepast naar een ander Huisman kraantype.

JAN DE NUL NAMES ‘VOLE AU VENT’

In the port of Ostend, Her Majesty the Queen of Belgium christened the new offshore installation vessel of the Jan De Nul Group. The vessel was given the catchy name ‘Vole au Vent’.

The ‘Vole au vent’, which is 140 metres long and has an impressive Liebherr crane on deck, was christened by the Queen of Belgium amid great interest and in the presence of the family and employees of the Jan De Nul Group and their guests, including Parkwind, the client of the Nobelwind project, worldwide partners from the industry, as well as national and international politicians. After the christening ceremony, Her Majesty the Queen paid a visit to the bridge and crew of the vessel together with the Jan De Nul family, Carl Decaluwé, Governor of West Flanders, Johan Vande Lanotte, Mayor of Ostend, and Bart Tommelein, Secretary of State.

After the delegation had left the vessel, the Vole au vent immediately returned to a nearby quay in the port to resume the activities for the Nobelwind project.

The vessel has been specifically built for the execution of offshore wind projects, but is also deployable for other offshore industries such as oil & gas.

MERGE INTO TECHNIPFMC

French oilfield services giant Technip and U.S. subsea equipment specialist FMC Technologies, have announced a merger agreement. The companies said that the merger will create ‘a global leader that will drive change by redefining the production and transformation of oil and gas.’The combined company will be called TechnipFMC and will have an equity value of $13 billion.

Vroon has announced the launch of its new AHTS vessel, the ‘VOS Character’ last Thursday, May 12, at the Fujian Southeast Shipyard in Fuzhou, China. ‘VOS Character’ is a 65 meters long, 6,500 horsepower, DP-2, anchor-handling tug supply vessel and the fourth in a series of such vessels being built at the shipyard for Vroon.The ‘VOS Champion’, ‘VOS Chance’ and ‘VOS Challenge’ are the remaining three newbuilds for 2016 while the ‘VOS Charisma’ and ‘VOS Charm’ are expected in 2017.

ARKONA CONTRACT VAN OORD

Energieleverancier E.ON heeft een contract voor het transport en installatie van de funderingen voor het Duitse offshore wind project Arkona gegund aan Van Oord. Van Oord installeert de 60 monopiles en transitiestukken voor het project. De installatiewerkzaamheden staan gepland voor 2017.

Voor het installeren van de funderingen van het Arkona offshore wind project zal Van Oord het hefschip Svanen inzetten. Arnoud Kuis, managing director Van Oord Offshore Wind Projects: “De installatiestrategie is gebaseerd op het bewezen concept dat de funderingen en componenten drijvend naar het hefschip Svanen worden gebracht. Deze methode is de afgelopen jaren geoptimaliseerd, wat heeft geresulteerd in een uiterst efficiënte installatie cycli.”

Het Arkona offshore wind project ligt meer dan 35 km ten Noorden van het Duitse eiland Rügen (Oostzee) en krijgt een opgesteld vermogen van 385 MW.

SUPPORT STRUCTURES FOR ELECTRICAL CABLES

Iv-Oil & Gas is awarded to execute the engineering, prefabrication and offshore installation of new cable support structures for the DolWin alpha Offshore HVDC Converter Platform. The platform is installed in a water depth of 27 metres, approximately 60 kilometres off the German coast and will be bridge-linked to the DolWin gamma platform. DolWin gamma is currently under construction at Nordic Yards in Germany and will be installed in 2017. For the transfer of electricity from the windfarms, the two platforms will be connected by cables via the bridge, so they can act as each other’s back-up. For this purpose, a new cable route was developed for DolWin alpha.

ATKINS TO DESIGN WIND JACKET SUBSTRUCTURES

Seaway Heavy Lifting (SHL) has appointed Atkins to carry out the detailed design of the jacket substructure and foundations for the 588MW Beatrice Offshore Windfarm Limited (BOWL) development in the outer Moray Firth, UK, as part of SHL’s EPCI contract with developer BOWL.

Andy Thompson, Atkins' offshore wind deliver director, said: "This is a very exciting project for us as it underlines our ability to design jacket structures for the latest turbines in deep water. This capability compliments our ability to design XL monopiles for the latest turbines, floating structures for wind turbines in deep waters and fixed offshore substations. The project approach adopted by SHL and BOWL has allowed Atkins to develop the design from concept, through front end engineering and design (FEED) and into detailed design along with other vital members of the Beatrice supply chain. Drawing on years of jacket design experience in oil and gas, and an industry leading offshore wind team, we're designing the first mass-produced deep water jacket substructure for an offshore wind farm. The evolution of the jacket substructure in this way is enabling savings on steel, fabrication and installation costs as we are developing a lighter, simpler and highly standardised substructure."

CONSORTIUM TAKES PART IN DUTCH OFFSHORE WINDFARMS TENDER

A consortium of Eneco, Shell and Van Oord has made a bid to participate in the Dutch government tender to build two windfarms off the Dutch coast. The consortium has selected MHI Vestas as the preferred wind turbine supplier.

The wind power tender comprises of two permits to build and operate two windfarms of 350 MW maximum installed capacity each – enough to power the equivalent of 825,000 households. The two windfarm sites, called Borssele I and II, are located 22 km off the coast of Zeeland.

NAMING CEREMONY FOR ‘MAERSK CONNECTOR’

DeepOcean announced that a naming ceremony was held for the ‘Maersk Connector’ in corporation with Maersk Supply Service on 3 May 2016 in Newcastle, UK. DeepOcean was joined by over 90 guests from the offshore renewable and power transmission industry to witness godmother Haydee Noemi Castillo Diaz de Boyde, the wife of DeepOcean’s Commercial Director Pierre Boyde, successfully naming the vessel and wishing her and her crew a safe and prosperous onward journey.

Pierre Boyde commented: “We are extremely proud to have shared this ceremony with our partners and clients. The ‘Maersk Connector’ is the most advanced power cable lay vessel in the world and the only vessel of her type that can go right up to the beach and go aground fully loaded with cable. She can install a power cable in a single length from the beach to the offshore wind farm, enabling increased reliability and reducing cost for the system operators. The vessel will be used to install the export cables of the Walney Extension windfarm in the UK followed by the Nemo Link interconnector project.

MONTROSE PLATFORM SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED

The Montrose Area Redevelopment (MAR) in the UK North Sea has reached a major milestone with the successful installation of the new Montrose Bridge Linked Platform. The 10,500 tonnes topsides was placed on the jacket by the SSCV Thialf crane vessel, marking the next phase of a project that will unlock an additional 100 million boe of reserves and extend the life of the Montrose Area to beyond 2030. Installation of the topsides was followed by installation of the bridge linking it to the Montrose Alpha platform, and of the flare boom. Work will now on the commissioning of the plant and integration of the wells, with first production from the Shaw field expected during the first quarter of 2017.Bill Dunnett, Managing Director of Repsol Sinopec Resources UK (expected to rebrand imminently from Talisman Sinopec Energy UK) said: “We’re very pleased to be able to report a safe and efficient installation of the new bridge-linked platform. This is a major step forward for this project and a tangible demonstration of the long term commitment of our shareholders – Repsol and Sinopec - and partner, Marubeni, to the UKCS. This is a completely new facility in our core infrastructure and will be a game-changer for this business. MAR adds significant production and maximises economic recovery from these historic assets.”OGA chief executive Andy Samuel said: “The Oil and Gas Authority is very pleased to see this important milestone in the redevelopment of the Montrose Area, which adds new fields and significant reserves, and also maximises economic recovery and extends the life of the existing fields.”The topsides was built at Heerema Fabrication Group’s Zwijndrecht yard in the Netherlands from where it sailed out at the end of April.

MAJOR NATURAL GAS FIELD DEVELOPMENT

Technip has been awarded a major contract to develop the Bahr Essalam, Phase II development in the Central Mediterranean Sea. This natural gas field development, which is operated by Mellitah Oil & Gas B.V. Libyan Branch, a consortium between National Oil Corporation and ENI North Africa, will be tied back to the Sabratha platform, which is situated approximately 110 km off the Libyan coast in a water depth of approximately 190 metre.

From concept to project delivery, Technip will build on its integrated model combining its subsea and offshore capabilities. The overall scope of work will see Technip perform the overall design, detailed engineering and deliver the project management, as well as procurement, installation, tie-ins, pre-commissioning and commissioning. This will be associated with the provision of a gas gathering system, comprised of production pipelines, subsea isolation valve (SSIV), umbilicals, as well as extensive diving and installation campaigns. It will also include modifications to the Sabratha platform regarding the topsides. All offshore mobilisations will be undertaken from Malta.

Offshore installation is scheduled for the second half of 2017 through to the second half of 2018. A range of vessels from the Group’s fleet will be involved, including Deep Energy Pipelay vessel, Deep Arctic Diving Support Vessel, and G1200 S-Lay vessel.

SEAZIP EXPANDS FLEET

Dutch SeaZip Offshore Services has expanded its fleet with two Damen Fast Crew Suppliers (FCS) 2610, named SeaZip 5 and SeaZip 6, respectively. The offshore service provider now has six Damen FCS 2610 vessels in its fleet.

“Once again, it’s a great pleasure to work with SeaZip Offshore Services,” states Damen Sales Manager Benelux Roel van Eijle. “We are proud to be involved with the development of their fleet since day one. An April delivery suits their needs perfectly – these two vessels can get to work straight away as this year’s offshore wind operations and maintenance period begins.”

While the catamaran crew suppliers are regularly seen around offshore wind farms, according to Damen, they are also suitable for offshore oil and gas operations.

The shipbuilder cited an example of SeaZip 4, it had previously delivered to SeaZip Offshore Services. Namely, the SeaZip 4 is about to strat its second season providing logistics support to Heerema Marine Contractors in their installation and decommissioning operations in the oil and gas sector.

According to SeaZip’s Managing director Jan Reier Arends, the latest catamaran duo is a bit different compared to its predecessors, as modifications have been made to both vessels increase their draught. Arends said: “By strengthening the hull in certain areas, the vessels are able to sit 5 cm lower in the water. This will allow us to load an additional 5 tonnes of cargo – this is a 25% increase of loading capacity. We will be able to carry a lot more equipment and materials.” He added: “You can call this fine tuning – coming from lessons that we have learned from the earlier SeaZip vessels. For example, together with the fender supplier, we have improved the bow fenders.”

IRO DEELNAME AAN MEXICAN PETROLEUM CONGRES EN BEURS GROOT SUCCES

Van 8 tot en met 11 juni jl. vond het Mexican Petroleum congres en beurs plaats in Monterrey, Mexico. Dit jaarlijks van locatie wisselende evenement is het belangrijkste olie- en gas congres en beurs in Mexico. Nu door de hervorming van de grondwet ook buitenlandse oliemaatschappijen licenties voor olie- en gasexploratie en -productie kunnen verkrijgen, biedt Mexico veel mogelijkheden voor Nederlandse toeleveranciers aan de olie- en gasindustrie.

Met name de ontwikkeling van de diepe offshore velden zijn interessant voor Nederlandse toeleveranciers. Belangrijke Nederlandse bedrijven als Van Oord, Sea Trucks, Damen, Bluewater, Mammoet en Boskalis waren dan ook present op de beurs.

Andere Nederlandse bedrijven: IPS, Ruysch, Petrogas, IHC en IRO namen deel in het Holland paviljoen van Dutch Energy Chambers opgericht om Nederlandse energie technologie in Mexico te promoten. Hoewel het nog wel even zal duren voordat de grote projecten daadwerkelijk realiteit worden is het van belang er tijdig bij te zijn en de Nederlandse industrie te promoten.

Om ook MKB bedrijven de gelegenheid te geven om op de beurs aanwezig te zijn, heeft IRO standruimte gehuurd in het Holland paviljoen van de Dutch Energy Chamber waar bedrijven tegen geringe vergoeding met brochures, logo en foto´s konden participeren. Acht bedrijven hebben van deze mogelijkheid gebruik gemaakt. Aanwezigheid van IRO was ook belangrijk voor de promotie en branding van de gehele Nederlandse olie- en gastoeleveringsindustrie. Participatie van IRO in het Mexican Petroleum congres en beurs is mogelijk gemaakt met ondersteuning door de Topsector Water. Immers de hervorming van de olie- en gasindustrie in Mexico biedt zeer goede mogelijkheden voor de drie clusters van de Topsector Water nl. Watertechnologie, Delta Technologie en Maritieme Technologie.
