TEACHER

Erin Gruwell

Is a “ rookie” Young American teacher, whom is married; but being raised in a house where civil right movements are empowered, she feels the need to not have to fight it in a court room rather then a school room; where students have to survive everyday and fight for their rights.

WILSON HIGH SCHOOL• This school is located in Long Beach California, it is

known for its integration program; which have diversity of students in its class room, there re Mexicans, Cambodians, Americans and much for different race.

• Wilson High School was a school of excellence; and it blames this social integration program to be the cause of having gang, drug and racial problems. The schools reputation is really in stake here and Erin has put in all her power to make a change in these kids and not treat them as minority or add risk students but as human beings and respect them and here them. Where there is just a school and not be looked at race or color but education.

Students • Wilson High have students that are inner city, where there birthday wish is probably to make it to at least 18. where they have to fight for respect, territory and race. These students live in a violent hood; where they are raised to protect their own, their own race. These kids come from low income families and a family with abuse patterns to them self and their own. These kids have been arrested, they have been shot at, they have seen one of their own die, they have seen how justice locks up innocent people just because they can.

• These kids are segregated with out even knowing them, they are treated like the rest of the bunch and not for individuality; the teacher gave them a power to have a voice of their own, where they would decide what the future would look like and not have someone decide for them.

System against the students• This high school is poor at system, not only its school

administration but lack of teacher interest. Luckily the higher Board of Education is willing to hear and not just one side of the story. The own school district is just wanting to get rid of these students and prefer that books just sit there then give them to these students because, they say they would just write and rip them. Where teachers only want the honor students and don’t care about the one that most needs. The school has given up on these kids so how can they survive if they are not even given a chance. Only the teacher has given them an opportunity and a life time experience.

• If it wasn’t for the higher people in the administration, who believed in the teacher and her form of teaching, these kids would have never had a chance.

Teacher Interaction• The teacher tried various ways of teaching these

kids, she first tried to teach poetry and used hip hop artist to encourage her students like a song lyrical written in verse on 2 PACS album. But a picture passed in class by a class mate offending a black dude was the beginning of the greatest teacher interaction, where she spoke about the holocaust and the way a picture had begun this terrible form of killing. This first assessment made students realize, they are not the only people that fought for their life, other people got it worst, the only resistance is their pride and their way of defending their own.

Teacher student relation• In order for the teacher to get her

students attention, she had to step into their shoes. She had to relay to what they are going threw, she had to speak their language and teach with examples they can best understand.

• The way she got their attention was by involving rap music, rap artist, gang and violence as examples in works and teaching books that they can see them self threw out the character.

• She won lots of respect by showing she cared and that she understood.

Ultimate Goal• Erin's ultimate goal was to stop segregation

and have these kids, defend things because it’s the right thing then being slit by race or gender. She wanted to see these kids graduate and give them a chance in life, where they realize they have a voice and can stand up for their beliefs. She wanted to defend civil rights and tell people, don’t judge because of raise or color, she was committed to make a difference in this kids life and she transferred to be a collage teacher so she made sure these kids were not going to give up in life. This is a powerful story to encourage teachers.

Final Evaluation• Erin gets to see her students graduate and some were

the first in the family to ever attend collage. Make sure the integration program was effectively worked on and to just have students be united as one then by race.

THE END

• I used to attend my Jr High at the Bronx and I think that teachers are still struggling to get their students attention and actually reach these kids, where there are still gangs and violence at school; in this particular film success is measured I guess by the amount of students that graduated vs. the amount that was known to fail. The teacher is looking for results and a way to teach how to reach students and at least give them a chance in life.
