NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefeand Florida First Lady Columba Bushannounced the Educator Astronaut Pro-gram at Hardy Middle School in Wash-ington on Jan. 21, 2003. As of Feb 15, atotal of 4,162 nominations have beensubmitted. California is third in nomi-nations with 353 but second in the num-ber of nominees with 206. The EAP of-fice expects a surge in nominations andapplications as the April 30, 2003 dead-line approaches.

Most nominations are from studentsand have included remarks like: “Myfifth grade teacher knows a lot aboutscience. When she teaches science sub-jects, she keeps me interested in study-ing science,” and “He not only meets therequirements, he’s an intelligent and arespectable man.”

Only a few nominations have hadulterior motives for sending their teacherto space. “Because we hate him andwant him to leave, please take him,”wrote one student prompting the pro-gram office to include “Remember,you’re nominating your teacher for around trip. It’s not one way” on the‘nominate-your-teacher icon’ on theEducator Astronaut Web site.

After an exhaustive six-month se-lection process, the thousands of appli-cants will be narrowed down to 30 to 60individuals who will be invited toJohnson Space Center, Houston, for moreextensive interviews. The Educator As-tronaut Program anticipates three to sixeducator astronauts entering the astro-naut class of 2004 for basic training.With the shuttle fleet temporarilygrounded, the first flight of educator

Engineer sees bright future for OneNASASince coming to work for NASA in

1995, engineer Karen Vander has seenthe basis for the OneNASA ideals atwork every day. As the executive secre-tary for the Rocket Propulsion Test Man-agement Board (RPTMB), NASA’s deci-sion-making body for the agency’s rocketpropulsion testing, Vander provides thedaily coordination of the board com-posed of NASA staff members fromWhite Sands Test Facility, Las Cruces,N.M.; Marshall Space Flight Center,Huntsville, Ala.; Glenn Research CenterPlum Brook Station, Sandusky, Ohio;and Stennis Space Center, HancockCounty, Miss.

Vander believes the team approachused by the RPTMB is an example ofwhat can work for the whole agency.“The management board is the OneNASA concept,” she said. “The boardworks openly in an atmosphere of trust.Everyone has a say, but the goal is tofind the best match of assets for propul-sion-test programs.”

Karen Vander, an engineer at Stennis SpaceCenter, works diligently to put the OneNASAvalues to work.

Administrator Sean O’Keefe intro-duced the OneNASA concept in De-cember 2002 by asking employees tohelp shape the effort through theirthoughts and ideas. OneNASA will re-quire each employee to consider all de-cisions within the context of what is bestfor the agency rather than for any oneorganization.

“Mr. O’Keefe’s support will helpthe agency achieve the OneNASA goal,”said Vander. “With his leadership andhis knowledge of federal administra-tion, there’s no limit to what we canaccomplish.”

Although Vander sees OneNASAideals at work daily, she says the initia-tive can be fully realized only throughhard work and cooperation. “We’re do-ing it now,” said Vander. “We just haveto strengthen what we have. We have tocontinue to find ways to do our jobsbetter. We have to work as a team.”

Part of achieving the OneNASAgoals will mean overcoming old-fash-

ioned, center-centric ideas. “Eventhough we sit in different states or comefrom different places, we’re still one or-

ganization and we should work thatway,” said Vander. “What center wecome from should be nearly invisible.We all need to be working toward acommon goal to meet NASA’s mission.”

The NASA community can helpfurther OneNASA, said Vander, by be-ing flexible. “We’re going through a lotof changes now. But as long as the com-munication lines keep flowing, that’sgoing to help.”

As OneNASA ideals improve inter-agency cooperation, Vander noted, thepractice also will benefit the agency inits interactions with other federal orga-nizations. “We’re building relation-ships,” Vander said. “We have to buildon our commonalities to strengthen theagency.”

“Karen has risen to meet every chal-lenge we have put in front of her,” saidNASA’s Mike Dawson, assistant direc-tor, Stennis Space Center, who has seenVander put the OneNASA values towork to benefit NASA and its relation-ships with other federal agencies. “Sheis currently leading the developmentefforts of a system to accurately andefficiently track high-valued rocket pro-pulsion-test components to be used innew propulsion system designs and ex-isting propulsion facilities throughoutNASA and the Department of Defense.”

Vander is an engineer in the Propul-sion Test Program Office at Stennis SpaceCenter. Her husband, Maury, is also aNASA engineer.

One of the deficiencies identifiedby OSHA in the VPP review and sub-sequent 90-day letter is the center’sneed to improve management ofchemicals. During 2002, a ChemicalManagement Task Force addressedthis need and made several improve-ments in the procedures for acquir-ing, using and disposing of chemi-cals. For these changes to be effec-tive, all chemical users must imple-ment them.

Beginning this month, the AmesHealth, Safety and Medical ServicesDivision (Code QH) will work withthe chemical users to evaluate theiruse of several highly hazardous com-pounds. A different chemical will bespot checked each month. This willinclude a review of the chemical in-ventory, the hazard/exposure assess-ment, training records and chemicalhandling practices at randomly se-lected locations.

An e-mail will be sent each monthto all employees whose chemical in-

ventory includes the substance beingexamined that month. Five of theselocations will be selected from theinventory listing for the on-site re-view.

Ames develops and demonstrates the ‘hyperwall’ tohelp researchers display, analyze data

The flow field around an aircraft asit soars through the skies; a dynamicmodel of cloud formation; a moleculeundergoing bond breaking in quantum

mechanical fields. All of these complexsimulations are typical examples of howtoday’s supercomputers are generatingmore data than ever before. And, as thequantity of data increases, advances incomputational science have improvedthe quality of that data. A team of NASAadvanced supercomputing (NAS) sci-entists has developed a tool to help re-searchers display, analyze and studythese high-dimensional datasets in moremeaningful ways.

Inspired by the sight of endless pan-els of images displayed on researchers’walls, desks and corridors, the‘hyperwall’ is a seven-foot by-seven-foot cluster of flat-panel screens, eachdriven by its own dual-processor com-puter with a high-end graphics card.The hyperwall provides a problem-solv-ing environment where one can use dif-ferent tools, viewpoints or even differ-ent graphics parameters to display thesame relationships within a dataset.

The hyperwall was developedjointly by members of the Code INRResearch Branch and the Code FM Aero-nautics and Spaceflight Hardware De-velopment Division.

When the computer science researchteam of Chris Henze, Tim Sandstrom,David Ellsworth, Creon Levit and ArtJoly first approached Code FM tech-nologist Dan Gundo about creating aframework to hold 49 flat screen moni-tors in a 7-foot by 7-foot matrix, it seemeda fairly routine task. However, whenasked to make each monitor adjustable

so the entire matrix of 49 monitors couldbe curved both vertically and horizon-tally, it suddenly became much morechallenging. And when requested to

make it capable ofbeing completelyd i s a s s e m b l e d ,shipped some-where to demon-strate it for a con-ference and reas-sembled in justone day, it wentfrom being chal-lenging, to beinghighly creative.

W o r k i n gclosely with the re-searchers, Gundoquickly beganconceptual devel-opment of theneeded frame-work using an in-novative tech-nique developedin Code FM calledprototype-as-de-

sign. Prototype-as-design had provedto be a robustmethod for sup-porting Director'sDiscretionary Fund(DDF) projects. Thedesign quickly pro-gressed, final detailsagreed upon, mate-rials ordered andfabrication beganunder the leader-ship of expert CodeFM craftsman Gar-ret Nakashiki asmaterials arrived.

“There are tworeasons why it wasnamed hyperwall,”Henze explained.“One is to distin-guish ourselvesfrom other visual-ization techniqueslike ‘power-walls,’ using large numbersof flat screens joined together to showjust one big picture; and two, using thisconfiguration allows us to visualizehyper-dimension data.” Henze said anew application for the hyperwall is afull six-dimensional data-set browser,where “the sampling plane can be ro-tated, translated or scaled any whichway in order to scan through all sixdimensions with four- and five-dimen-sional cases as trivial variants.”

The completed unit was delivered

to the researchers for attaching the moni-tors and testing the entire system intheir laboratory in time for the HighPerformance Computing and Network-ing Super Computing 2002 conferencelast November.

Steve Nance of Code FM took on thenext challenge and designed and fabri-cated the necessary shipping crates forthe entire system in only two days. Theresearchers disassembled, crated andshipped the hyperwall to the conferencein Baltimore, where it was reassembledin a single day for the NASA exhibit.When operating, the hyperwall provedto be quite popular among NASA andindustry conference attendees.

This unique, new Ames capabilityis now back in the researchers' labora-tory in Building T27A, assisting scien-tists in evaluating large volumes of com-plex data. A joint Code INR/FM patentdisclosure is in process for the uniquedesign of the hyperwall.

The hyperwall recently was featuredat a technology showcase on communi-cation and computer hardware/soft-ware presented in January by the Girvan

Institute of Technology at the MoffettTraining and Conference Center. Anarticle about the hyperwall appeared inthe fall 2002 issue of Gridpoints, pub-lished by the NASA AdvancedSupercomputing Division, Code IN.

Following a long illness with mus-cular dystrophy, Dr. Lizbeth M. Kraftdied on Nov. 29, 2002. She will bemissed by many.

Born in Vienna, Austria in 1920,Kraft immigrated to the United Stateswith her family in 1923 and was natural-ized as a citizen in 1929. She completedher pre-college education in publicschools in Schenectady, NY and went onto earn a bachelor’s degree in botanyfrom the New York College of Agricul-ture at Cornell University.

In 1942, Kraft entered the College ofVeterinary Medicine at Cornell and re-ceived her doctor of veterinary medi-cine degree in 1945. In the context of thetimes, Kraft was a true pioneer in theveterinary profession, as few womenwere successful in gaining admission toveterinary schools and fewer still suc-cessfully graduated with the D.V.M./V.M.D. degree.

Following her graduation from vet-erinary school, Kraft worked at a num-ber of prestigious institutions where shespecialized in veterinary microbiology.Early in her professional career, she de-veloped an interest in the diagnosis, pre-vention and treatment of murine(mouse) viruses. While a research asso-ciate at Yale in 1958, Kraft published theseminal paper on the control and natu-ral history of epidemic diarrhea of in-fant mice, a disastrous disease thenprevalent in mouse-breeding colonies.The microbial control concepts con-tained in this publication led to the in-vention of the filter-top for rodent cages

Martin has been asked to developan integrated space exploration planfor NASA that will guide funding al-locations and new initiative develop-ment in all the enterprises over thenext decade. Mission concepts underconsideration extend human explora-tion beyond low-Earth orbit (LEO) andultimately to Mars.

Reporting to NASA's Deputy Ad-ministrator Frederick Gregory and theJoint Strategic Analysis Committee,Martin will lead the space architectteam, composed of representativesfrom all NASA enterprises and cen-ters, to develop the science rationale,mission concepts and science and tech-nology investment strategies that en-able the nation's next steps in space.

(often referred to as ‘Kraft tops’ early intheir use) that have contributed signifi-cantly to the prevention of the transmis-sion of rodent disease organisms sincethen.

Throughout her professional career,Kraft worked for improved standardsof care for laboratory animals and betterstandards of quality for laboratory ro-dents. For her research and advocacyefforts, she received many accolades andawards, including the Griffin award in1972, from the American Association forLaboratory Animal Science (AALAS)and the Charles River Prize in 1981. Shewas recognized as a ‘founder’ of thespecialty of laboratory animal medicine,having been quite active in the estab-lishment of the American College ofLaboratory Animal Medicine, achiev-ing diplomate status in 1961 and servingon the college’s board of directors from1965 to 1970 and as the college’s presi-dent in 1966. Further, she was an earlysupporter of AALAS and served on itsboard of trustees and executive boardfrom 1964 to 1967.

Kraft retired from active veterinaryactivities in 1988 after completing herprofessional career with an 11-year tourof duty as staff veterinarian and researchscientist at Ames. While with Ames, shereceived three achievement awards forher accomplishments supporting NASAbiomedical research programs. Herpublished legacy includes nearly 60publications pertaining to laboratoryanimal science.

In her ‘retirement,’ Kraft emerged

as a respected visual artist, capable ofworking in multi-media. She was anenthusiastic supporter of the art com-munity in the Silicon Valley area and

worked to expand various programsnow enjoyed by the members of thePacific Art League. For her contribu-tions to the arts, Kraft was elected aspresident of the Pacific Art League in1992 after receiving its Elizabeth NortonDistinguished Service award in 1990.

In 1994, she took over the organiza-tion of the local artist community’s an-nual event, ‘Silicon Valley Open Stu-dios’ exhibit, part of a worldwide pro-gram that connects artists, primarilythose living or working in Silicon Val-ley, and art enthusiasts. Working out ofher home, she oversaw the growth of theevent from one with 110 artist partici-pants in 1994 to one with 350 partici-pants in 2002.

Also, largely through her efforts, anon-profit organization, Silicon ValleyVisual Arts, was founded in 1999 andassumed responsibility for the annualopen studios event, assuring its conti-nuity into the future.

However, AF2Mers say, enterprisewas required. “Every Wednesday dur-ing burrito and tostada day, we armedourselves with F2M poster boards, leaf-lets and candy to go campaign aboutF2M,” said Dennis Gonzales, Web de-signer and developer for the Documen-tation Technology Branch (Code JIT).Though team members started out sit-ting behind the table, waiting for thehungry crowds to approach so theycould preach the gospel of F2M, he said,“instead, the hungry crowds wentstraight for the cash registers and com-pletely ignored us.”

Gonzales and his teammates de-cided to follow in the footsteps of “thoseguys at the airports wearing orange robesand bells,” by approaching people, hand-ing out leaflets and talking. Fast.

Gonzales says he learned a lot abouthuman behavior that day. “I quicklypicked up interesting signals and whatI call ‘avoidspeak’ body language thatpeople use in order to avoid you,” hesaid. “Many people avoided lookingdirectly at you. Or, they would mutter.‘I'm a contractor,’ or ‘I’ve already heardof AF2M,’ or ‘I’ve already got a leaflet,’or ‘I don't work here.’ Gonzales’ favoritebrush-off was ‘I'll be back.’

Deb Wood, associate director (act-ing) for R&D Services (Code F) also no-ticed techniques Ames employees usedto avoid contact. “People would walkquickly, avoid making eye contact andeven stop going to the cashier on theright,” she said. “But we persevered,and things started to click.”

Phil Snyder, associate director (act-ing) of Aerospace (Code A), found hismost useful method for connecting withpeople was to reach out with the AF2Mmessage to his network of co-workersand people he already knew. “Thatmethod worked beautifully,” he said.“While I was there to inform peopleabout AF2M and solicit ideas, chattingwith old friends turned out to be a wayto break the ice and catch up with long-time friends.”

Snyder found that once he explainedwhat AF2M was about, many peopleimmediately came up with robust ideas,which he volunteered to submit to theAF2M database on their behalf. “Mymessage to people was that AF2M is notabout creating more management con-straints, it’s about removing impedi-ments to efficiency.”

One good suggestion Snyder re-ceived focused on the response of Amesemployees during an emergency and itsaftermath, such as a major earthquakeor a nuclear, biological or chemical at-tack. “The suggestion was to better de-fine the correct response of ordinaryAmes employees, both their level of‘event awareness’ during an emergencyand also the appropriate actions theyshould take in the aftermath,” he said.This suggestion is currently being ad-dressed by Code Q and Code JP, thedivision with emergency services re-sponsibilities, with a response expectedlater in the year.

Those who took part in the cafeteriapromotion found it useful. “Giving upmy lunch break was well worth it if I

was able to get even one person inter-ested in AF2M,” said Gonzales.

“To sum it up, we had a lot of funtalking to colleagues and getting theword out about AF2M,” said Haines.She also said that Ames employees don’thave to worry about having their lunchesinterrupted anytime soon, since no morecafeteria promotions are currentlyplanned. However, she said, there maybe other AF2M promotions in the worksthat will involve Ames’ lunch-timecrowd. She dropped a brief hint, with atwinkle in her eye, “Think McDonald’splacemats!” she said.

In an effort to help create spacecraftthat can think, NASA and a group of sixcolleges led by Purdue University re-cently met in West Lafayette, Ind., to

officially launch the NASA Institute forNanoelectronics and Computing.

Institute scientists and engineers willcollaborate to work on methods to makeelectronics measured in nanometers--much smaller than today’s components.A nanometer is roughly 100,000 timessmaller than the width of a human hair.Purdue scientists will work with re-searchers at Northwestern, Cornell andYale universities, the University ofFlorida and the University of Californiaat San Diego.

"Innovative technologies developedunder the auspices of the institute willbenefit the U.S. space program for de-cades to come," said Purdue PresidentMartin C. Jischke. "The research alsowill benefit Indiana and society in gen-eral through possible technology spin-offs; and it will provide learning oppor-tunities for our best students, who rep-resent the coming generation of scien-tists and engineers," he added.

“The team based at Purdue will belooking at several novel, unconventionaltechnologies for NASA mission needs,”said Meyya Meyyappan, director of the

Center for Nanotechnology at NASAAmes. The technologies will have appli-cations for commercial systems as well,according to Meyyappan.

A meeting at Purdue was held toformally announce the new NASA insti-tute. Researchers held a series of meet-ings to discuss the new institute andanother new federally-fundednanotechnology effort.

The institute will be based atPurdue's Birck Nanotechnology Center,one of four centers that will be part of therecently created Discovery Park. Thepark will be a complex of facilities thatuse a multidisciplinary approach to de-velop new technologies.

Future computers will make space-craft more autonomous so they can bet-ter function in remote regions of spacewithout the need for human interven-tion, said Supriyo Datta, director of theinstitute and Purdue's Thomas Duncandistinguished professor of electrical andcomputer engineering.

"The research will focus on improv-ing the electronics for NASA space mis-sions, which require lots of computa-

The ‘brains’ of future spacecraft willbe miniature supercomputers, accord-ing to scientists. "For all decisions to bemade right at the spacecraft, instead ofat mission control here on Earth, re-quires enormous computing power, or-ders of magnitude more than what wehave today," Meyyappan said. "Thesecomputers will have to come in smallpackages, because you can't haul a bunchof mainframes into space."

The institute is one of seven newuniversity research, engineering andtechnology institutes created by NASA.The NASA institute at Purdue will con-tain four major facilities: the BirckNanotechnology Center, the BindleyBioscience Center, the Burton D. Mor-gan Center for Entrepreneurship and ane-Enterprise center.

African-American leaders and in-stitutions have long distinguishedthemselves. African-American chem-ists, biologists, inventors, engineersand mathematicians have contributedin both large and small ways, and theaccomplishments of the past andpresent can serve as pathfinders topresent and future engineers and sci-entists. Granville T. Woods, electricalengineer, mechanical engineer andinventor, invented the telegram sys-tem in 1887, and is better known for hiscontributions in developing the ‘thirdrail’ concept in mass-transit subway

systems and developing the ‘trolley’system for trolley cars.

In 1961, Ozzie Williams was incharge of developing and producingrocket control systems as a rocket pro-pulsion engineer, and these controlsystems were used in guiding lunarlanding modules during NASA'sApollo moon landing.

African-American NASA astro-nauts such as Ed Dwight (America'sfirst black astronaut) and Dr. Mae C.Jemison, and leaders such as Dr. Mar-tin Luther King Jr., whose legacy ofnonviolence and work to championcivil rights continue to inspire peoplethroughout the nation, are only a fewexamples of many prominent and dis-tinguished African-Americans whohave left their mark in the fields of inscience, public service, governmentand politics.

To celebrate and acknowledge theAfrican-American History Month,there are several events plannedthroughout the Bay Area communi-ties during the month of February.Ames employees are encouraged toparticipate in local community eventsand activities in honor of this specialand important observance.

Kalpana Chawla, one of the astro-nauts who died on Feb 1, 2003, was mycolleague and friend. For several years,

she had the office literally next door tome at Ames. We saw each other everyday. We went to the same seminars. Wewent to the same meetings. We went tothe same parties.

Her specialty was aerodynamicssimulation. I had the pleasure of work-ing with her on several projects. Shetutored me on the techniques I neededto implement ‘overset grid methods’ onthe connection machine (a special kindof supercomputer). She was a leadingexpert on these techniques.

When she was accepted by the as-tronaut corps she left behind, withouthesitation, her career as a computa-tional aerodynamicist at Ames to trainfor spaceflight at NASA in Texas. Iasked her when and if she thought shewould actually fly. She told me it wouldtake a few years but she would fly -because once you are accepted into thecorps, you fly. It would be a wasteotherwise, for the agency and for thetrainees.

She loved flying as well as the sci-ence of flight. She was both a privatepilot and an aerodynamic engineer. Shemade the transition to astronaut afteryears of working for NASA in aerody-namics and after the Challenger acci-dent and subsequent investigation. Sheknew the risks. She accepted them with

absolute enthusiasm and no equivoca-tion. Even before her first shuttle mis-sion in 1997, she had become a hero to allIndians and especially to all Indian girls.

I'm sure she did her job on the shuttlecrew with the same unique blend ofserious intensity and humor that I re-member from her days at Ames. I hadalways thought we would see her comeback to Ames. Perhaps someday as thedirector. Everyone who knew her andindeed everyone in both of her countriesis shocked and in grief. But grief is notthe lasting message. The lasting mes-sage is, I believe, spoken to all the girlsof India and thence to all young peoplein our planetary culture. The message is

The sun rose on the life of HarryJohn DeVoto, born April 11, 1918 in S.

Norfolk, Va. The sun set on his life Jan.2, 2003 in San Ramon, Calif., relinquish-ing his life to lung cancer. His physicalbody succumbed to this disease, but nothis spirit.

He was 84 years old and led a fulland vibrant life. He excelled in manysports; basketball, tennis, golf, sailing,scuba diving, jogging, cycling and ski-ing. He had a zest for life and wasinterested in a great many things, al-ways active in a variety of projects.DeVoto was a man held in high esteemby his family and peers alike. He wasadmired and appreciated and will be sogreatly missed by all those who sharedhis life and knew him.

DeVoto was recruited to work forNACA at Langley Field, Va., while inthe Army Air Force and was transferredto NACA-Ames Aeronautical Labora-tory at Moffett Field, which later be-came NASA Ames. He retired in 1972 aschief of the Graphics and Exhibits Divi-sion. His later years were spent joyfully,filled with genealogy research, travel-ing, sometimes abroad, golfing and, withhis wife, enjoyed their beloved train col-lection.

He is survived and will be sorelymissed by his loving wife, ShirleyDeVoto. He is also leaving his twochildren; his son, Daniel Harry DeVoto,and daughter-in-law Molly ofPleasanton, and his daughter, DonnaMay DeVoto of Tracy. One of his twobrothers, Daniel S. DeVoto of Pittman,New Jersey predeceased him, May 19,2002 at the age of 83 years. His younger

brother, John Edwin DeVoto, is a resi-dent of Wilmington, Del. He is sur-vived by 4 grandchildren: Alissa DeVoto,of Pleasanton; John Lombard of Ft.Benning, Ga.; Dianne Lombard of Den-ver, Colo.; and Michelle Deangelo ofDenton, Texas. He is also survived by

The ACCC has been inoperation since 1985, supported by fa-cilities provided by NASA Ames. Thefunding for the operational expenses ofthe ACCC comes from tuition paid by

the parents. Enhancements to the pro-gram rely upon donations andfundraising.

The center is accredited by the Na-tional Association for the Education ofYoung Children (NAEYC). NAEYC ac-creditation is a rigorous, voluntary pro-cess by which early childhood programsdemonstrate they meet national stan-dards of excellence. This prestigious rec-ognition has been achieved by approxi-mately 7 percent of early childhood pro-grams nationwide. Children's languageand social skills especially benefit fromthe better quality found in NAEYC-ac-credited programs. Dr. Seth Shostak of the SETI insti-tute will give a non-technical illustratedtalk on March 5 at 7 p.m., about 'Whathappens after contact: Responding to amessage from space.'

The lecture will be given at theSmithwick Theater at Foothill College,located on El Monte Road and Freeway280 in Los Altos Hills.

Shostek, a senior astronomer at theSearch for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence(SETI) Institute in Mountain View, willdiscuss what plans scientists have if theydetect a radio message from an aliencivilization out among the stars. He willexamine how any such messages will beverified (to avoid hoaxes), how the news
