When many Americans think of Independence Day, thoughts of fireworks and celebrations may come to mind.

Others may think of parades and activities with family and friends, on the 4th of July.

However, during the 1770’s, America was not an independent nation. Some colonists felt that they had little to celebrate, as some

destroyed signs of British rule.

In the late 18th century, the 13 American Colonies were being ruled by Great Britain and its monarch, King George

III.

Many colonists felt that Great Britain tried to enforce unfair laws that did little to make America a strong country.

When some colonists felt that they had taken enough abuse from Great Britain, they fought to become a new and independent nation.

In 1775, the 13 American Colonies went to war with Great Britain to win their independence. This war was called the Revolutionary War.

In 1776, the Declaration of Independence was written. It said that the

colonists had a right to live, to be free, and to be happy. Also, it stated if the king did not take care of his American citizens, then the

people had a right to create a new government.

On July 4, 1776, Colonial representatives approved a notification of freedom, our Declaration of Independence.
