ABERDEEN HIGHLAND GAMES
Located on the New England Highway between Scone and Muswellbrook, Aberdeen is the first main township on the Hunter River. With more than 175 years history, the small town is steeped in Scottish heritage. One of the first settlements in the picturesque Upper Hunter Valley, the town was named after the Earl of Aberdeen, a friend of early settler and British MP Thomas Macqueen.
Today you can still see much of the history in a walk around the town. Plaques set in the footpaths and on buildings identify these historic places from Aberdeen’s past. Copies of the map can be found at the Scone Visitor Information Centre.

HISTORYThe first European settler in the area was Lieutenant William Ogilvie in 1825. This first settlement was known as Merton and was located on the opposite side of the Hunter River to the Denman of today. Gazetted in 1853, the town was named after Lord Denman, who later became Governor General of Australia. By the 1900s Ogilvie Street was bustling with small business houses servicing the town and outlying areas and the charm of yesteryear remains today.

Settled in 1839, Merriwa flourishes as an agricultural centre. The Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces celebrates this rich agricultural history and is held on the June long weekend each year. Merriwa has many fine examples of colonial architecture, from homesteads, courthouses and police stations, to hotels and churches. Many of these can be discovered on the Merriwa Town Walk. Copies of the walk can be obtained from Merriwa Visitor Information Centre. Be sure to visit the Old Colonial Cottage, originally built in 1847 and home to the Merriwa Historical Society and Museum.
Merriwa not only offers the historical museum but also a fascinating Bottle Museum. The Bottle Museum contains in excess of 5,000 bottles, ranging from hand made bottles with specially moulded neck pieces and the round bottom torpedo bottles of the early 1800s, to the famous marble stoppered cordial bottles of the 1870s. The collection was donated to the district by local residents and contains many rare and interesting bottles.
The Battery Rock is a collection of spectacular basalt rock formations estimated to be around 35 million years old. These rock formations are a natural phenomenon, known as columnar jointing. They are basalt rocks formed from volcanic lava. This formation is fascinating and is a great place to stop and have a break. Visitors will find a picnic area with toilet facilities.

DAY TRIP TO WINGEN OR BURNING MOUNTAIN
CLIMB THE EYE OF THE NEEDLE IN PARADISE PARK
WINGEN AND BURNING MOUNTAINTake a trip out to Wingen, a little village half way between Murrurundi and Scone on the New England Highway. On the way experience the phenomenon of the Burning Mountain, where a two metre thick coal seam is burning around 20-30 metres below the surface. A great spot for picnics, Burning Mountain is a nature reserve and visitors can enjoy a 45 minute walk through the bush to its summit where there is a good view of one of the outlets. Along the way, there is a view across the valley to the Wingen Maid as she reclines in her rocky form, mourning forevermore the loss of her husband.
From Wingen you can also make the short trip to Towarri National Park and visit the Washpools.
Murrurundi lies one hour south of Tamworth and just north of Scone and boasts natural beauty, rich farming land and plenty of character. Murrurundi is an art lovers’ paradise. Resident artists, galleries and frequent workshops add to the allure of Murrurundi, a haven for artists escaping the frenzy of city life. Be sure to allow time to wander the galleries including Darcy and the Fox, Haydon Hall, BoHo Gallery, Chicken in the Window and Michael Reid Gallery.
Explore the unique rock formation of the Eye of the Needle, an unusual walkway leading to a lookout with captivating views over the township of Murrurundi. View the old suspension bridge, built before WWI and once used to transport the Chief Magistrate by buggy to the court house in the times of flood. Follow the town walk to view many of the Heritage listed buildings such as Dooley’s Store and the White Hart Hotel. Copies of the Heritage Walk map can be picked up from the Visitor Information Centre.

The name Murrurundi was derived from the Wanaruah place name
MURRUMOORANDI
Originally thought to mean ‘nestled in the valley’, it seems more likely that it refers to five unusual rock formations near Temple Court (only four remain now) and may mean ‘five fingers’ or ‘meeting place at the five fingers’.

BARRINGTON TOPSThe majestic snow covered ranges of the Barrington Tops are a must see destination in winter. With a highest peak of 1586m above sea level snow is possible at any time of the year but is more likely to occur in the colder months between May and September. Snowfall at Barrington Tops is usually of a short duration so it can be a challenge to pick the right conditions to head up for a snow trip. To increase your chances of finding settled snow on the ground check the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) weather forecast before you go or visit the Barrington Tops Snow Chasers page on Facebook for the latest updates.
The best spots to experience the snow are at the higher elevations on the plateau, accessible by vehicle on the Barrington Tops Forest Road from Gloucester or Scone. These include the Polblue Camping Area (1450m), Thunderbolts Lookout (1450m), Devils Hole Lookout (1400m), The Firs Picnic area (1350m) and the Honeysuckle Picnic area (1310m). The main access road is steep and unsealed and can become very slippery in ice or snow. 4WD vehicles with good tyres and high ground clearance are better suited to the hazardous conditions, however the road may be closed to all vehicles at short notice to ensure the safety of visitors. Weather conditions at Barrington Tops can change very quickly so always be prepared and take spare warm dry clothing, blankets, food and water as a minimum.

SCONE HORSE FESTIVAL
UPPER HUNTER | NSW
WWW.SCONEHORSEFESTIVAL.COM.AU
FUN FOR ALL AGES!
OUR SCONE HORSE FESTIVAL STORYNearly four decades ago, four community minded, horse passionate men combined their vision to turn a major country race meet into a festival for many to visit Scone, the horse capital of Australia and experience a love of horses and all that goes with it.
Jim Rodgers, Mike Pritchard, Barry Chapman and Brian Russell created the Scone Horse Festival, by adding a horse parade and forming a volunteer committee to nurture and grow the festival.
Each year, the passion of horses and creating an experience for the masses grew stronger, through the stability of the equine industry and our strong, energetic and caring community.
37 years on, we are able to offer something for anyone and everyone with or without a love of horses. A festival filled with fun, unique and ‘once in a year time’ country experiences which we want to share with you.
A parade of family fun at the front end of the festival with around 80 colorful entrants, flows into the Scone Grammar School fete and markets. The original race meet is now followed the next day by a family orientated race day, and combined, form the highest paying stand alone country racing carnival in Australia offering $2 million in prize money.
Around 60 experiences over 10 days culminating with a spectacular fireworks display at the picturesque Lake Glenbawn.
Live shows from farrier displays to Australian Tent Pegging Championships, equestrian vaulting, polo, thoroughbred horse demonstrations, rodeo, stud tours to sheep dog trials and Australian Stock Horse demonstrations.
Loads of exhibitions and mostly free events!

THE FESTIVAL OF THE FLEECES FRIDAY 8 – SUNDAY 10 JUNE 2018 MERRIWA NSW
Flock up!
For more information please visit: www.festivalofthefleeces.com.au
Flock on up!Every June long weekend since 1990
Ever seen a sheep in red socks? How about hundreds of them? A couple of hundred sheep – and twice as many socks! If not, you best get yourself to the quaint town of Merriwa in the Upper Hunter on the June long weekend because it’s a spectacle to behold when a mob of red-sock wearing sheep march up the main street leading the parade.
The Running of the Sheep is part of Merriwa’s Festival of the Fleeces and is quite possibly the only festival in Australia where you can get up close and personal with a national icon proudly wearing a product it produced itself.
The festival also includes street stalls, artworks, activities for the kids, dog high jump, sheep shearing displays, a great fireworks display on Saturday night and a Bush Poets competition on Sunday.
The festival is a fantastic event that includes everything and anything country, blended with a twist of modern interpretation.
The first festival was staged in 1990 to promote the local agricultural industry. The red-sock connection goes way back to one of the early sponsors, Holeproof. Instead of sending money the company had an oversupply so sent boxes of red socks instead.
The original committee decided to put them to good use and so a tradition was born.
Merriwa Festival of the Fleeces attracts some 5,000 people, about 200 sheep, 100 horses, 50 dogs and lots of farm animals at the petting zoo which people are able to cuddle.
The community is understandably very proud of its event and ability to showcase this thriving industry.
Best of all, the profits are donated back to the town’s vital emergency services - the Merriwa and District Volunteer Rescue Association and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
Merriwa is a welcoming country town situated on the Golden Highway, midway between Newcastle and Dubbo and definitely worth a look.
Please see www.festivalofthefleeces.com.au for further information.

WELCOME TO THE HORSE CAPITAL Horses are a predominant feature of the Scone and the Upper Hunter region of NSW. The beautiful animals provide pleasure to many sportspeople, provide wealth to the economy and are a way of life that leads at the top in the region.Hundreds of thoroughbred breeding enterprises make their home within the Upper Hunter’s span, as the area is known as the racing mecca of the country. Millions of dollars are generated each year from this industry, which stands Scone alone as the Horse Capital of Australia. As well as the dollar value, racing and breeding also brings with it a great network of socialising.
Thoroughbreds are not the only horse breed dominating the region, as the Upper Hunter is also well known for Arabs, Warm Bloods, Quarter Horses and Stock Horses, and many different breeds of performance horses.
Being the town of the Australian Stock Horse Society Headquarters, Scone hosts many a show throughout the year, which is a wonderful spectacle for visitors and locals to appreciate.
The township of Merriwa is known as the ‘Home of the Pony Club’. The region also has a thriving polo and polocrosse community, rodeos that attract competitors from around the country and the full range of leisure and eventing equine activities such as show jumping, dressage, cross country, vaulting, team penning, camp drafting and tent pegging and of course racing.

HORSE STUDS OF THE UPPER HUNTERThe origins of the Hunter Valley’s thoroughbred breeding industry date back to the early 1800s when the first settler and horse breeder George Bowman chose to live and breed horses in the Hunter Valley. Nestled in the valley surrounded by the Wollemi National Park and the Barrington Tops, protected by the valley hills, with lush pastures on the valley floors and close to abundant clean water, the first settlers to this region recognised that it was an unparalleled place to live, work and raise exceptional thoroughbred champions.
For nearly 200 years the Hunter Valley has been home to world-class thoroughbred studs, broodmare farms, veterinarians, saddlers, farriers, equine transport companies, feed merchants, many other equine support industries and thousands of dedicated people with a love of, and passion for, horse husbandry.
From Jerrys Plains, the southern gateway to Upper Hunter Country, through Denman to the Widden and Bylong Valleys, east to Muswellbrook and Aberdeen, north to the Segenhoe Valley, Scone and Murrurundi - each stud presents a unique and unparalleled experience.
Every farm is a working business. Some are family-owned and operated for many generations. Others private businesses or part of world-leading and world-renowned operations. All have a unique story to tell, from their history and heritage to their architecture.
But don’t take our word for it. Come on up! And see it for yourself. It will be an experience you will never forget. All visitors are invited to experience the hidden beauty and magic of our stud farms, their history and heritage and the champion horses they produce. Visitors are welcome at our studs but you must book ahead. If you would like to visit the studs book a tour with www.htba.com.au/stud-tours or take a drive past the gateways of some of these amazing studs with the Virtual Stud Tour Audio App.

DEVIL ARKVisitors who have a soft spot for small endangered cuddly animals can embark on a sight-seeing adventure into the wilderness at Tomalla and witness nature first hand at Devil Ark. The Tasmanian devil conservation park is home to many devils, including a host of cute babies that are bred on site in the hills of the Barrington Tops.
Devil Ark was established by the Australian Reptile Park director John Weigel and other conservationists as a safe site to continue breeding the Tasmanian devil and prevent its extinction from the disastrous devil facial tumour disease. The first of its kind of insurance breeding project, it has already seen a boom in the cute little creatures with almost 200 healthy devils breeding. 2015 saw the first group of devils relocated from Tomalla to Tasmania.
Fully escorted two and a half hour tours are available running from September to May each year and includes a rare chance to witness wild devils in their natural habitat of the free range enclosures.
Devil Ark is located two hours from Scone, four hours from Newcastle and six hours from Sydney.
To organise a tour, contact 1300 553 565, email [email protected] or visit www.devilark.com.au

Wineries and Cellar DoorsDelight the senses and indulge in experiencing some of Australia’s most delectable wines that are grown and produced locally in the heart of the Upper Hunter.
Visit the wineries dotted through the wine growing regions of Jerrys Plains, Denman and Merriwa. Discover the traditional boutique wineries producing Chardonnays, Shiraz, Cabernets, and Sémillons.
Some of our Upper Hunter Cellar Door Wineries have picnic and barbecue facilities. Please contact them for more information - always a great way to enjoy a get-together with family and friends.
Rich and FamousThe Upper Hunter is blessed with deep rich soils along the river flats and wide open grazing country – just perfect to grow dairy and beef cattle, sheep, pecan and macadamia nuts, world class wines and olives, seasonal produce, fruit and vegetables, herbs and game birds for fine restaurants around Australia and in Upper Hunter Country.
Come and see where they grow and how they grow. Come and taste the cheeses, wines and olive products at the place where they have been made. Come and say “g’day” to our farmers – they are always happy to have a yarn over the fence.

RESTAURANTS, CAFÉS, PUBS & CLUBS A DINING EXPERIENCE.With such an abundance of fantastic local gourmet produce, it’s little wonder there are many excellent restaurants and cafés both in the townships and in the surrounding countryside.
The choice of establishments is as wide and varied as the cuisines on offer. From fine dining by award winning chefs at The Remington Restaurant or The Cottage; to charming family run cafés; in house dining at some B&B’s and country houses/retreats; to bistro dining at licenced clubs; these will add to the pleasure of staying in and touring Upper Hunter Country.
The classic country pub has been the centre of social, cultural and sporting life in small towns for generations. In earlier times, it was also the place to dine with fine furniture, starched aprons, spotless linen table cloths and silver service. Commercial travellers always looked for the best hotel with the most comfortable bed, the coldest beer and especially, the best dining room.
Times have changed but you can always guarantee a cold beer and nowadays, there is a resurgence in fine dining at our country pubs. Come along and rediscover the charm and hospitality of country pubs in the Upper Hunter – sitting in the shade of a big tree on a summer’s afternoon or beside the open fire on a winter’s evening – always with a local character to entertain you and great stories that get better as the night goes on…You are always made welcome to enjoy the diverse facilities provided by the clubs in each of Upper Hunter Country’s towns.
