Fiber optics provided the foundation for faster and safer data transmission and hence communication.

Originated with the invention of lasers in year 1958.

Advancement was made in this field with the fabrication of low loss optical fiber in year 1970.

FSO is free space optics.

Only recently it sprang into public awareness.

It can be summarized as wire free optics

ORIGIN OF FREE SPACE OPTICSORIGIN OF FREE SPACE OPTICS

FSO or optical wireless communication by Alexander Graham Bell in the late19th centaury even before his telephone invention!

Bell’s FSO experiment converted voice sounds to telephone signals and transmitted them between receivers through free air space along a beam of light for a distance of some 600 feet, - this was later called ‘PHOTOPHONE’.

PRINCIPLEPRINCIPLE

Line of sight propagation is the basis of transmission.

Optical systems work in the infrared or near infrared region of light.

FSO uses a directed beam of light radiation between two end points to transfer information (data, voice or even video).

Basic difference between fiber optics comm. and FSO comm. is the medium.

FSO offers better bandwidth and data storage capacity is increased.

Optical communications are in the process of evolving, Giga bits/sec to terabits/sec and eventually to pentabits/sec.

A transmitter acts as receiver and vice-versa. For this two laser beams act simultaneously.

TECHNOLOGY OF FSOTECHNOLOGY OF FSO

An FSO unit consists of an optical transceiver with a laser transmitter and a receiver to provide full duplex (bi-directional) capability.

Generated infrared beams by high power LEDs are used as medium.

Today modern lasers provide network connectivity at 622 Mega bits/sec and beyond with total reliability.

Operating wavelength are 800nm or 1550nm 1550nm wavelength is generally selected because of

more eye safety.
