    Information for Parents and Teachers

Kids everywhere love Minecraft, which makes it the perfect vehicle for teaching a wide

variety of topics. Children learn better when they want to learn something. By connecting

academic content to something they already love, we are able to take advantage of

their excitement and motivation. This Minecraft Math Mini-Unit unit is designed to be a

supplement to resources you use to teach your child about the three different types of

angles. Look for other Minecraft Math units to supplement your curriculum and build on

    your childs love for Minecraft.

The following is a description of what youll nd here:

Mathcraft Types of Angles instruction about types of angles(p. 4) The goals for the

unit are stated in this section, along with some basic instructions about Minecraft images.

Time for Practice(p.7) Students identify right, acute, and obtuse angles using images

    from Minecraft.

Extra! (p. 8) Another practice problem to help students identify right angles.

Build It! (p. 8) Students are given two assignments for building things in Minecraft to

demonstrate their understanding of the types of angles.

Whats next? (p. 8) This is a description of the full unit on angles (Al l about Angles)

that you should explore after this mini-unit. It includes angle measurement, the types of

triangles, and a more in-depth study of geometric principles.

Answer Key (p. 9) This is where youll nd the answers to the activities in the mini-unit.

The answers for the Build It! activities will vary based on what your children build.

    Please Note:

This is amini-unit provided by Time for Homeschool. Our full units are much longer and

provide students with more practice, both in terms of the amount and variety of practice.

If you have a topic you would like to see in a Time for Homeschool Mathcraft Unit, pleaseemail your suggestion to [email protected].

This is a line. The arrows on either end indicate that it keeps going on withoutstopping.

This is a line segment. It is a portion of a line, and it has a beginning and

    an end.

When two lines or line segments collide, they form angles.

The world is full of angles. They are

all around us. Look around the room

you are in. The walls intersect in the

    room forming an angle. Straighten

out one of your arms in front of you

and then bend it a little. Do you see

    the angle?

Minecraft is full of angles. In fact,

its a world of angles. Even circles

are formed by line segments coming

together in lots of little angles. In

    Minecraft, the angle is king!

While angles of all sizes and shapes are everywhere, there are only three

main types of angles right angles, acute angles, and obtuse angles.

First is the right angle. Right angles form perfect corners, like the corners

of a square. Look at the image of Creeper, below. All four corners form right

    angles.

We also refer to right angles as 90 degree angles because they measure

90.Well discuss degrees and angle measurements in the next unit.

All squares have four equal sides and four equal angles. Its likely that thecorners on the cupboards in your kitchen are right angles. Most corners on

picture frames form right angles. Look around your house and nd 5 other

    right angles. List them here:

Take a look at the block wall, below. Its just full of right angles! Angles A

and C are right angles. Angles B and D are different. The line segments

split the block forming two smaller angles out of each 90 angle. That

shows us the second kind of angle acute angles. Acute anglesare

smaller than right angles. In other words, they are less than 90. Wehavent talked about angle measurement yet, but Ill bet you can gure out

the measurement of those acute angles formed by cutting a 90angle in

    half.

Right! These acute angles are 45, but an acute angle can be any

    measurement less than 90.

    where you found them here.

    Extra!!!!

Can you count the number of right angles in the block wall? ____________

    (Hint: Each block has four.)

Build it!1. In Minecraft, build a fort or garden that has 200 right angles. Show it to

    your parent or teacher.

    2. In Minecraft, nd and identify at least 2 acute angles and 2 obtuse

angles. Show your parent or teacher.

Whats Next? From here we continue to Al l About Angles, a full unit covering anglemeasurement, and triangles, the types of triangles (equilateral, isosceles,

and scalene). Well learn several ways to determine the size of angles using

both a protractor (real protractor electronic/online protractor ) and calculations

based on other angles in the triangle.
