Free Latin Classes for Beginning Students
In his September , , apostolic letter Scripturae Sacrae Affectus on the life and work of St. Jerome, Pope Francis calls on us as Catholics to explore our heritage: “Christianity makes you heirs of an unsurpassed cultural patrimony of which you must take ownership. Be passionate about this history: it is yours.” This inheritance, this history to which Pope Francis refers can only be truly approached through the Latin language, which for , years has been the authoritative and universal — indeed, catholic — language of the Church and her saints. Without Latin, millennia of Catholic thought and tradition — much of which has never been translated into any language — is inaccessible. The Centesimum Institute for Latin Studies has been founded to heed Pope Francis’ call. Therefore, starting in January , we will offer online classes in the fundamentals of the Latin language, with an emphasis on the ancient and unbroken Latin traditions of the Catholic faith.
LINGUA SACRA: THE LIVING LATIN OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
Students will learn the sacred language of the Church from the beginning, so no prior knowledge of Latin is required. Those with some background in the language who are interested in refreshing, relearning, or activating their Latin are also welcome to join. To facilitate acquisition and to better appreciate the beauty and music of the language, we will practice Latin aloud and speak it together as a living language, as has been done in the Church without interruption since antiquity. ‘Lingua Sacra’ is offered on a pay-what-you-want basis. In order to make instruction in the sacred language of the Church as widely available as possible, this includes an option to enroll free of charge. Instructor: Tyler Patterson Required text: H.
