2017 THRIVING MICHIGAN

Rich Sheridan, CEO of Menlo Innovations in Ann Arbor, was the keynote presenter at our Business Summit on September 21st. Known as a typical IT person in past working years, Rich poked fun at the technology industry multiple times. He stated that the absoultely LOVED the industry and the work/creations that they do ---- but got to the point that he couldn’t stand the work environment.

So he created a different culture when he found Menlo Innovations. This culture is gaining international attention due to its’ unique boldness, yet subtle demeanor. Menlo’s culture will not work for all, but there are some critical calls to action that Sheridan challenged the audience with.

INTENTIONALLY THINK ABOUT WHO YOU SERVE AND WHAT DELIGHT LOOKS LIKE TO THEM.It’s okay to ask them what would absolutely delight them. Then get busy creating it.

CHANGE HOW YOU INTERACT WITH THE PEOPLE THAT YOU SERVE.As a good first step, he suggested to let your people know that you are serious about creating a more joyful culture, is to move out of your office. Seriously. To change your organization, you must change first.

The space that is your work environment communicates your culture. Menlo did not build an open and collaborative office environment; rather, they built and open and collaborative culture. Menlo’s space communicates their core values, with collaboration being at the top of the list. And their team is in charge of their space.

Menlo mastered Sheridan’s advice: change how you interact with the people you serve. You are guaranteed a differ-ent outcome if you follow this advice.

How does one go about creating culture change? RUN THE EXPERIMENT.To change your culture, try radical experiments. If you are contemplating making a change. . . . . STOP THINKING AND RESEARCHING, AND JUST TRY IT! Then tweek it. And tweek it again, and again and again.

Rich shared one of his biggest learnings is that by “running the experiment” - he has learned to make mistakes fast-er. This save not only time, but resources as well.

For more great ideas on how to create culture change in your workplace, check out Sheridan’s book: Joy, Inc.
