PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Welcome to 2016! We have just celebrated the Chinese New year this week - The year of the Fire Monkey and I trust it will be a prosperous, healthy and happy year for all.

he Chamber had a hugely successful 2015 and is planning an even bigger and better 2016. A very strong executive planned out the year

with four key events and they were well attended and enjoyed. We held two meetings concerning development applications that are impacting on our local area, The Young Business Minds Awards and the Annual Drinks on the Village Green. We also partnered with Dural Rotary for The Annual Charity Golf Day which was held last October and was another memorable event.

A big thank you to Diana Paton, Peter Dawson, Peter Colusso, Liz Pellinkhof, Martine Musemeci, Kalene Cassie and John Leckie from the Chamber executive and Rod Cuevas for the Young Business Minds Awards for all the work and dedication put in over the last year. I appreciate each one of you for your contributions and help throughout the year.

The Festival of Lights was a resounding success and the Round Corner shopping village was lit up all through the holiday and festive season. Once again thanks to the Hills Shire Council for the funding and to Peter Colusso for implementing our grand plan and putting it all together. We will be adding to the display and spreading it further this year.

Part of the Drinks on the Village Green was the result of the judging for the best decorated shop. It was very close for first and second with Vinnies just taking out first place and Dural Gourmet Delicatessen a very close second place. In third position was Poshy Nails with Jean Elle and Flamin’ Chooks also up there with a highly commended.

The AGM for the Chamber of Commerce will be held Wednesday 24th February in the Boardroom of LJ Hooker at 6pm and afterwards onto dinner at Lombardo’s. All are welcome and especially those that are interested in getting involved with their local business community.

Dooral Roundup – February 20164

I had a lovely Christmas and New year over in Perth with all my six sons, two daughters in law and 5 grand children all in my eldest son’s house who lives just out of Perth.

t was absolute bedlam and chaos but we all managed to have a very fun time. Highlights for me were going to The Hopman Cup and

watching Lleyton Hewitt playing in his second last tournament ever and he was still amazing to watch.

The Swan Valley wineries were another terrific day and their distinctive tasting earthy but fruity wines from around that area. My daughter in law was a fantastic tour guide being a born and bred local girl.

A day out on the boat on the Swan River was another stunning day with some of the family. They tried crabbing in the river while I threw in a line and stunned them all when I pulled out a big flathead. They did manage to pull up one blue swimmer crab which was thrown into a mussel stew later on that night and was very tasty.

I hope all our readers had a well earned break and enjoyed the rainy weather that I missed out on in sunny Perth. The area is so green and lush everywhere at the moment.

I look forward to another year with the local community and all the stories we have to share.

COVER STORy

The co-owner, George Nisbet, described how The bike Establishment came into being.

live in the Hills area, northwest of Sydney,” he explained. “The idea of the new store in the Hills was actually born

out of a discussion with some of my neighbours who cycle with me on weekends. There was no bicycle store in the upper Hills area but there has been a lot of growth in cyclists in the area over the past few years.

The grand opening was on Saturday 31st October 2015, and we had over 100 people through the shop on the first day, which was well beyond our expectations!”

As to the name and logo of the new store, The Bike Establishment, George said that both had a significance. “We have come up with the new name to reinforce that we offer quality brands and service, plus the iconic celeste

colour branding to reinforce Bianchi’s position as the oldest bike brand in the market,” he explained.

“We have a multi-brand strategy, namely Bianchi, FOX, Cinettica and Netti, as well as partner brands in Cervelo, Focus, ByK, Jetblack, Shimano, Apollo and others. We also have BH eMotion and Kalkho eBikes, as our preferred brands.”

Markus Plitzko is touring New Zealand’s south island on his bianchi C-Sport 3, donated by The bike Establishment, raising donations for Annabelle. The Twyford and Payne Families are also raising money for baby Annabelle Twyford.

Annabelle, at 6 months of age was diagnosed with Idiopathic Dilated Cardiomyopathy (cause unknown). Essentially, her heart is severely damaged, function is poor and requires daily medications to keep her heart from failing. When Annabelle gets a simple cold, her condition can deteriorate rapidly. The photo is baby Annabelle at a family picnic on Sunday, the next

day she was in intensive care, fighting for her life.Annabelle’s parents, James and Katherine have been told

that there is no cure. There is a high chance baby Annabelle will need a heart transplant in the near future. This disease has uncertainty at every step of the journey. Currently there is one transplant centre in Australia, based in Melbourne (1000 km from home). At any stage, Annabelle’s condition could deteriorate, meaning that she would need to be attached to a mechanical heart in Melbourne hospital until a suitable donor is found. The average wait being 1 year. You can donate on this website: www.gofundme.com/ma8n5eks

LOCAL NEWS

Council has reiterated its commitment to an amalgamation with Hawkesbury City Council, but in doing so The Hills has a strong preference to retain the suburbs of baulkham Hills, Northmead, North Rocks and Carlingford with these residents to be part of the new merged Council with Hawkesbury.

ills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne labelled the NSW Government’s proposal to merge The Hills with Hawkesbury

while losing all suburbs below the M2 to Parramatta as “illogical.” “It might look logical on a map, but the M2 motorway

does not meet the criteria one would normally associate with a boundary. It has been retro-fitted and the communities have adapted and remain connected,” Mayor Byrne said.

“These communities have strong historical, social and economic links to The Hills and from my experience, those residents do not wish to become part of Parramatta.”

“The NSW Government cannot be blamed for not understanding these nuances given the extent of the reform agenda so I will be working really hard with the NSW Government and our Local MPs to make this minor change and allow us to move on and deal with the issues facing Hawkesbury.”

“The Hills Shire Council has always supported the NSW Government’s bid to reform the local government sector and we know that tough decisions have to be made. However, I feel the reform doesn’t have to mean that communities be fractured and the process made overly complicated by proposing boundary adjustments that are extremely unpopular and unwanted.”

“Residents and businesses below the M2 in suburbs like Carlingford, North Rocks, Baulkham Hills, Winston Hills and Northmead have told us loud and clear that they want to remain in The Hills.”

“These are suburbs that have strong communities of interest with The Hills. Residents send their children to school in The Hills, they play their weekend sport in The Hills and they shop in The Hills.”

“A good example is that of North Rocks Soccer Club. Founded in 1965, North Rocks has nominated to play with the Sydney Hills Football Association in 2016. The Sydney Hills Football Association’s boundaries encompass all of the current Hills Shire Council boundaries.”

“North Rocks Soccer Club is making the move to the Sydney Hills Football Association because they feel that the Granville Association that they previously played in - which encompasses all of Parramatta City Council, Auburn City Council and Holroyd City Council – is not local enough. This area that the Club does not consider local enough could very soon be their new Council, unless the residents stand up now.”

“But, I have to tell our residents that they need to engage

and make a submission to the NSW government by the 28 February deadline. My strong belief is that this community has it within them to help me in my endeavours to have the Government change its mind and make a minor amendment to the merger proposal.”

“They must not leave it to Council or their neighbour to advocate and make submissions. To influence we need significant numbers and significant submissions.”

Mayor Byrne said that a merger with Hawkesbury presented opportunities for both councils.

“Hawkesbury residents and businesses will benefit a great deal from a merger with The Hills as over time Council will be able to provide greater equity in services and will be able to manage and renew its assets. Clearly, Hawkesbury’s assets are deteriorating and there is no magic pot of gold available to them to fix it. If left unchanged, Hawkesbury residents will see their roads, parks and public facilities fall even further behind while their rates will rise significantly.

“A new merged organisation will free up funding by removing duplication, providing better advocacy with the potential for enormous investment in their roads, parks and facilities that standing alone will never see.”

“Hills residents will rightfully ask, ‘What’s in it for us?’ - In answering that, residents have to understand that local councils only exist at the behest of the NSW Government. The Local Government Act is a State Act and allows the State Government to constitute Local Government areas and make changes to them. The Government was intent on reducing the number of Council’s and The Hills is unfortunately too successful to stand alone as all of our neighbours had been deemed unfit for one reason or another.”

“I am confident that the Hills Shire residents will continue to enjoy the levels of service they have become accustomed to and, in the long term, will benefit from being part of a Local Government Area that will strongly represent Sydney’s North West.”

Council Reaffirms Commitment

LOCAL NEWS

The Sydney Hills youth Choir is looking for new members to join its ranks in 2016.

he choir offers singers aged 8-18 the chance to perform at local and Sydney events. Last year the choir’s performances

included the opening of the Sydney Hills Christmas Sky Show and Australia Day at the Farm 2016.

The Sydney Hills Youth Choir was founded in November 2014 by the then 18-year-old, 2014 Sydney Hills Youth Ambassador, Cassidy-Rae Wilson. Cassidy-Rae started the group after she identified an opportunity to provide performance opportunities to youth within the Hills community without the expenses often involved in

joining a musical group. “I wanted to give the youth of the community amazing,

unforgettable performance opportunities, without the costs,” Cassidy-Rae said.

The Sydney Hills Youth Choir’s motto is “Bringing youth together in a fun, safe environment” a maxim the singer of the anti-bullying anthem “Be Strong” feels passionate about. Cassidy-Rae is committed to ensuring the choir is a place where youth can feel encouraged and just have fun.

“I love the happiness evident on the choristers’ faces when learning a new song, performing on stage in front of hundreds of people, proud to be a part of the Sydney Hills Youth Choir, or even playing games in rehearsals with their new friends,” Cassidy-Rae said.

“To see that it makes young people happy to perform and the wider community happy to listen and enjoy the performances, I couldn’t ask for much more – other than to bring in more choristers!”

Mayor byrne said that Council was committed to making The Hills a more attractive place to do business.

The Sydney Hills has delivered its most successful Summer Series yet, holding a record number of events and welcoming a record number of attendees over the summer months.

ayor of the Hills Shire Dr Michelle Byrne has praised Summer Series, citing the local and visor economy as

its main beneficiaries.“The Sydney Hills Summer Series was originally designed

by council to encourage Hills residents to ‘stay local’ over the

summer period and boost both the local business and visitor economies,” Mayor Byrne said.

The year ahead has some exciting events in store for the local Hills Community. 2016 will see youth and Senior’s week events in April, Convict Footprints: Rebellion in April and May, the return of the Orange blossom Festival and parade in September, the launch of Summer Series 2016/17 in October as well as other cultural, music and food festivals and sporting fan days throughout the year.

Wanting to build a Granny Flat or backyard Studio can be challenging, there are so many options and the costs involved are substantial not to mention the hassle dealing with council red tape to obtain building approval and $1000’s of dollars to be paid in contributions and fees.

hen there is also having your backyard turned upside down for months until the building works are completed.

Now there is an easy solution in choosing a Granny Flat or Studio option that suits your requirements.

A NSW company provides a simple affordable option that eliminates the need for Council Building Approval and the inconvenience of having tradesmen running around your property for months. This unique option also gives you the flexibility to relocate the Granny Flat or Studio should your circumstance change in the future with prices starting from only $69,990 for a fully self contained 1 bedroom Granny Flat and even less for a Studio model.

VanHomes Sales Pty Ltd company founder, Vito Russo saw a need for an alternative to what was currently available for retirement home options when looking at retirement home options for his nan. Having done the rounds of visiting numerous retirement homes and villages he was quickly disheartened by the upfront cost and ongoing fees combined with the distance where the homes and villages were from where he was living.

While the thought of building a Granny Flat in his back yard was his preferred option, the council red tape was a nightmare. Then there was the advice from a real estate mate who advised him that if he ever wanted to sell his property, having a granny flat in the back yard would limit the potential buyers of his property and its value.

Further investigation by Vito saw him come across a NSW Local Government Act that would allow an innovative type of Granny Flat option on his property with out the need for Council Building Application. This alternative would also give him the flexibility to easily relocate the Granny Flat should his circumstance change in the future.

Needless to say that the rest is history as the concept has taken off all over NSW with property owners loving the simplicity of having their 35sqm to 60sqm Granny Flat or Studio delivered to their backyard ready to move into the same day, whilst retaining the flexibility to easily relocate it at a later stage should they need to.

While the reason for choosing the VanHomes option for additional accommodation is very clear, what is really putting a smile on the many VanHomes customer’s faces is the money they are saving and how hassle free the process has been for them.

If you would like more information on how VanHomes can provide you with an affordable and hassle free Granny Flat or Studio option, please call Craig on 0428 221 938.

No building Permit required

you know how frustrating it is when your hearing aid doesn’t work, especially when you need it most. The really good news is Hear Clear Australia has some simple tips for you.

Clean them often Wax is nature’s way of removing debris from your ear, but it clogs up the hearing aid’s mechanisms. At least once a week, gently remove wax from the ear piece with your hearing aid’s cleaning brush. Change the batteryThe one thing hearing aid users always remember to do, is change the battery. Keep a supply handy for when you need them. If this doesn’t work, try cleaning it again.

Turn them off and store them safelyYou would be amazed how many hearing aids have been accidentally damaged by pets and young children. An unattended whistling hearing aid attracts the inquisitive. Open the battery compartment to turn the aid off and store them out of reach.keep them away from waterOur hearing aids are so comfortable, people sometimes forget to take them out before plunging into the pool or stepping into the shower. If you do get them wet, dry them with a soft towel and bring them to the clinic as soon as possible. Do not put them in the oven or microwave.Be wary of cosmetics and hair productsLooking good can have its downside for hearing aid wearers. Always apply hairspray and face powder before putting on your aids, as the fine particles can disrupt the workings.

If your aids are still not working, bring them to the clinic. Don’t be an amateur technician, best to leave it to the professionals.

CHAMbER NEWS

A rezoning application has been made to Hornsby Council for the properties 268 – 278 New Line Rd, Dural.

he proposal seeks to rezone the above land from IN2 to B2 Local Centre under Hornsby Local Environmental

Plan (2013) to support a wider range of commercial uses including a full size supermarket, specialty retail, offices and a medical centre.

The Chamber of Commerce is very concerned about this application for what it believes is a number of very good reasons.

At Round Corner there already exists the opportunity for growth in the retail and commercial development. A new commercial rezoning from Light Industrial to B2 local centre geographically so close to Round Corner shopping

village can only fragment the commercial and retail viability for the area.

The South Dural precinct bounded by New Line Rd, Hastings Rd and Old Northern Rd is currently under consideration with the State Planning Authorities. If this precinct is rezoned and begins to be developed there will be a local shopping centre included.

There are two more developments already planned for the area which have retail and commercial and some residential units. Cascades at Dural will be commenced shortly and the Gateway on the corner of Stonelea Court and Old Northern Rd, Dural has been rezoned and there is anticipated another supermarket, boutique shops, some commercial areas and residential units.

The volume of traffic already coming through this area results in highly congested roads especially at school drop

off and pick up times. This will only worsen with all the new homes under construction in North Kellyville. Infrastructure needs to be put in place before there are any more developments that will increase the traffic flow even more.

The Chamber supports developing a master plan for the whole area and working with both Hills Council and Hornsby Council to achieve this. The Chamber has held a preliminary meeting with Hills Shire Council and they are supportive of the idea.

The current proposed merger of some councils is also proving a hindrance the consultation process as both Hills and Hornsby are affected so their focus at the moment is self preservation, which is to be expected.

If you have an opinion on the above proposed rezoning we would love to hear from you. You can drop into LJ Hooker at Round Corner from an update or email the Chamber on [email protected]

you may also phone the President Judy Pope on 0425 217 684.

There’s no doubt Hills residents are hardworking, generous people that are always willing to support our community through any means.

believe what makes our community stand out from others is not just the dedicated people, but the fact we also have

organisations that share that ethos and are committed to supporting members of the community that need it most.

The Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children RIDBC Early Learning Programs have been granted $697,341 for their project, Home, Centre based or itinerant early intervention program to support young children with disabilities under the Intervention Support Program.

Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children Support Services has been granted $52,695 for their project, Contribution towards the salaries of itinerant teachers and other essential personnel to support students with severe sensory impairments enrolled in Catholic schools throughout the state.

The Intervention Support Program (ISP) is funded by the NSW Department of Education and Communities to support children in early childhood centres operated by Include Me, improving educational opportunities, learning outcomes and personal development for children with disabilities.

It is crucial for me to ensure that every dollar spent on earlier intervention is centred on children and families getting the services they need. The Hills leads the way in special needs care and this is what makes me most proud of being Member for Baulkham Hills.

This commitment to community reinforces why our shire is one of the most sought after locations for families.

The recommendation for a uniform weekend penalty rate is a common sense move that would enable more businesses to open their doors on Sundays.

he Productivity Commission’s recommendation for one weekend penalty rate for the retail, restaurant

and hospitality sectors reflects the modern reality that the community expects businesses to be open and trading on Sundays. The excessive cost of employing staff remains the number one issue for business owners across NSW. Reducing penalty rates on Sundays in the retail, restaurant and hospitality sectors will enable more businesses to open their doors on weekends, which means they have a greater opportunity to grow their business and employ more people.

With youth unemployment still a huge problem in many communities, the current penalty rates mean that the cost of employing even young people in entry level jobs in retail, hospitality and tourism is simply prohibitive for most small businesses.

Reasonable penalty rates have a place in modern workplace regulations, but consistent weekend penalty rates on Sundays are long overdue.

Sporting Field Allocations by Michelle byrne, Mayor Hills Shire Council

MAyORAL uPDATE

you would be well aware many public inquiries were held in February regarding the state government’s Fit For The Future process.

t the Parramatta Inquiry, I supported our position that the suburbs of Epping, North Epping and

Carlingford should stay within Hornsby Shire rather than be absorbed into the larger Parramatta Council. We are proud of these suburbs, and want to do our best for the residents and business owners who live and work there.

At the Pymble Inquiry I presented our view of the proposed amalgamation of Hornsby Shire Council with Ku-Ring-Gai Council. We believe this proposal is the best way forward for this region of Sydney. Financially, Hornsby Shire Council is in great shape and is one of the best managed Councils in the state. In my opinion merging with Ku-Ring-Gai Council will bring about significant benefits for our residents in the future.

Council is looking to address the increasing demand on sporting fields by reforming the allocation process in 2016.

combination of factors had led to the chronic shortage of grounds including the rapid growth of all-age and

over-35s competitions, the growth in non-traditional sports such as Ultimate Frisbee, Touch Football and Oztag as well as commercial operations like six-a-side football.

The allocation of sporting fields is one of the most challenging and divisive issues we have to deal with at Council. We are in a situation where Council is trying to accommodate as many residents as possible, but there are bound to be some who don’t get exactly what they want,” Mayor Byrne said.

We allocate 75 fields to 50 community sporting clubs, with the highest demand coming from soccer. Over the last few years, the addition of commercial operators such as personal trainers, fitness boot camps, summer six-a-side football competitions and private football academies have placed enormous strain on our grounds.

Council must now act before the situation spirals out of control and before more community sporting clubs miss out.

Our new allocation process strikes the right balance in terms of meeting the needs of the majority of our residents.

REPRESENTING OuR AREA

I will not be contesting the next Federal election.

t has been my privilege to represent the people of three electorates, Parramatta, Dundas and Berowra, since

entering the Federal Parliament in September 1973.During my 42 years in the Federal Parliament I have

served in opposition and in government. I have been this nation’s Attorney General and hold the record of Australia’s longest-serving Minister for Immigration.

Having now announced my resignation, there will be comments in the mainstream media and on social media about my public career. There will be bouquets and brick bats – kind words and derisive comments. Scrutiny of my career may fill some space in both the written and spoken media – but whatever words may be written, whatever conclusions drawn, I simply want to say to all my current constituents in the electorate of Berowra, as well as those I represented in Dundas and Parramatta, that it has been the greatest privlege to represent you and I have always sought to do my best on your behalf.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon Julie Bishop announced my appointment as Special Envoy for Human Rights, a role in which I will promote Australia’s candidacy for membership of the Human Rights Council for the 2018-20 term.

With the network of contacts I have built up, and my years of experience as a Parliamentarian, I will continue to work to advance human rights on a global scale. To those who have supported and encouraged me – and those whose opinions have differed from mine – I thank you all for being part of the journey.

Homeowners in the Hornsby Shire now have access to free sample testing for loose-fill asbestos insulation.

nsuring the health and safety of Hornsby residents

is a priority for the NSW Government. The Loose-Fill Asbestos Insulation Taskforce has recently identified one property in the Hornsby Shire as having loose-fill asbestos insulation. Although it is only one property it may be an indication that other are residences. Therefore I encourage homeowners in Hornsby Shire to take advantage of this opportunity to have their ceiling tested.

The Hornsby Shire is one of 28 local government areas (LGAs), eight of which are in the Sydney metropolitan area, where the NSW Government is providing ceiling insulation testing for residential properties built prior to 1980.The NSW Government has determined that demolition, comprehensive site remediation and disposal are the only options to remove the health risk of loose-fill asbestos from affected properties. This program provides safety, certainty and support for our citizens and offers a solution to the problem of loose-fill asbestos when it is positively identified in homes.

Owners have until 1 August 2016 to register for free testing. For more details and registration visit www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au or call Service NSW on 13 77 88.

Our area is undergoing significant change, and with that change come challenges and opportunities.

he Hills is the beneficiary of almost $10 billion in NSW Government funding. While this is an

exciting time for our community we need to ensure the unique nature of The Hills is retained, as this is the reason it is one of the most popular places for new families to live. An increase in density adjoining a major public transport corridor makes good sense and creates affordable housing with greater connectivity to employment areas. We have some lovely bushland corridors adjoining creek lines, which when combined with cycle and walkways provide ideal places for a quite walk and the opportunity to leave the hustle behind. These areas are just as important as any new infrastructure. It also ensures existing suburbs with detached housing and open space remain typical of The Hills urban landscape.

The future quality of life for our community depends on sound planning combined with good urban design, appropriate infrastructure and an abundance of open space, which to date has been a benchmark of The Hills lifestyle.

The SS united States, an ocean liner bigger than the Titanic that once carried celebrities across the Atlantic at record speeds, may one day sail again.

rystal Cruises announced plans to overhaul the ship at a cost of at least $700 million. The massive steamship

has been docked in Philadelphia for two decades, gutted and rusting at an unused wharf on the Delaware River. In its glory days in the 1950s, the ship carried everyone from royalty to immigrants across the Atlantic Ocean, accompanied by three on-board orchestras. At the time, it was the biggest and fastest ocean liner that had ever been built in the United States – at 990 feet, 108 feet longer than the Titanic.

On its maiden voyage in 1952, the liner’s 268,000-horsepower engines propelled it across the Atlantic in three days, 10 hours, 42 minutes. That record stood until 1990. The ship was decommissioned in 1969.

The SS united States is now owned by a conservation group, with a purchase option signed by Crystal Cruises.

ENTERTAINMENT

Search for a beatles hit on any on-demand streaming service and you’ll be served up covers by established and not-so-established artists. What you won’t find are The beatles.

owever, after years of rejecting the overtures of music streaming services, it looks as if The Beatles sizable

song catalogue are to finally show up on streaming sites on Christmas Eve, according to Billboard.

It’s not known which specific service or services have finally secured the deal, though Billboard’s unnamed sources “strongly suggest that most, if not all” streaming sites – Spotify and Apple Music among them – will begin offering the band’s catalogue of 10+ studio albums.

While it’s safe to assume surviving members Paul and Ringo don’t need the extra income, having the Beatles’ songs finally available via streaming sites is sure to please plenty of music fans and should introduce the band’s work to a whole new generation of listeners.

The Beatles, or those in control of its fortunes, have been famously slow in embracing new technology.

It took a good five years for its catalogue to make it to CD, and around six to show up on iTunes.

Lake Eyre (Kati Thanda) – the place of Australia’s inland sea: one of the few untouched natural waterways in the world. Time simply does not exist. Day is measured by the length of shadows, a month by the level of salt crust on the surface, years by the rise and fall of the water.

boards and nails that stick up; this will avoid any moisture from being stored and seeping into the timber which will cause discolouration.

If the deck has been neglected, you might need to sand the timber back before you reseal it. I suggest you use at least two coats of sealer or oil. A good sealer will have UV protection, mould and mildew resistant and have a life of several years.

So, if you love the look of timber decking and want to upkeep its appearance than follow these simple steps to keep it looking beautiful.

Chemical safety is vital when dealing with your swimming pool or spa.

here are a few of important rules when dealing with chemical safety:

1. Never mix two chemicals together. This includes mixing of two different types of pool chlorine. Mixing chemicals can cause poisonous gas formation and even explosions.2. Always add chemicals to water never the other way. Large amounts of chemical with small amounts of water can cause explosive reactions and lead to dangerous gases.3. Always prepare and use chemicals in open spaces as the fumes of some chemicals are dangerous and can poison you.4. Always wear safety gear, pouring acid into water can splash up and get into your eyes or onto your skin causing burns.5. Never use empty chemical containers for any other purpose as chemical residues can cause problems.6. Always secure chemical containers when transporting them in your car. Loose containers can shift and be damaged when turning corners causing fumes to be released and chemical spills can cause damage to your vehicle. Never transport liquid chlorine and liquid acid together in the boot of your car.7. If you have chemicals left in the shed and you are not sure what they are or the label is damaged or missing don’t guess. Never throw them in the general rubbish.

When preparing to sell your home, thoughtful planning doesn’t simply come down to researching the latest property sales and deciding on an asking price.

resenting a well-maintained home is important to buyers. It’s often wise to ask a friend to come over for

a third party inspection and highlight imperfections. You’ll be surprised how easily and cost-effectively

many of the imperfections can be fixed, improving your opportunities at sale time. If loose tiles wall cracks or frayed carpet are obviously visible, buyers will get the impression that the home has been poorly maintained.

Give the garden a good water leading up to an open house and take the time to remove weeds form the garden beds, paths and entry gates. Another tip is to declutter, think about about conveying a minimalist, yet comfortable, scene which prospective buyers can see as their own.

On Saturday mornings, many vendors set up the kitchen or living room to make it look like it should on a weekend morning, newspapers splayed on a table, coffee and juice, this scene helps potential buyers visualise what it would be like to enjoy the house on a weekend morning, the most pleasurable time of the week.

With a little housekeeping, vendors can go a long way to making the sale they’re after.

It’s time to bring the garden inside and give new life to your interior.

hese days there is plenty of talk about environmentally friendly ‘green’ homes. But let’s talk about a truly green

home – one full of living plants, where the inhabitants can relax and nurture their souls surrounded by natural beauty.

There is no such thing as an indoor plant – only a plant that can handle the added stress of growing indoors. After all, indoor living robs plants of most of the elements they

need to flourish – rain, fresh air and sunshine. Plants that can survive under a roof usually come from subtropical climates and are accustomed to growing in dappled light conditions. Keep in mind that indoor

plants bought directly from the nursery have usually been reared in a temperature-controlled glasshouse with frequent water and fertilising. For best results, gradually acclimatise plants to your home’s individual conditions. Keep up the water and the feed for the first few months then wean them off all the attention slowly to harden them up, taking care not to neglect them too much.

Growing plants indoors helps us to relax by filtering out toxins from the air.

At Langlands Landscapes Supplies we have a full range of mulches, sand and gravels suitable for your garden. For further advise please call 9651 2102.

yes, it is a good story about a family, the best family, who have been a vital part of the history of our district for nearly 200 years.

eorge Best arrived in Australia as a convict on the “William and Ann” in August 1791. He had been a

farmer in his former home in Sussex and was able to put his experience into practice when he was put to work at the Toongabbie Prison Farm. He must have pleased the authorities, as he was appointed Taskmaster and overseer and after seven years was given a free and absolute pardon.

In 1796 George married Martha Chamberlain, who was also a convict, having arrived on the “Indispensable ”earlier that year. They settled on 30 acres situated at Baulkham Hills, where their 9 children were born. George was one of the first to be given a grant of 60 acres at Dural, when the Crown land was opened up to settlers in September 1819. He shared this grant with his eldest son, Thomas, who developed it and purchased other grants. George, with another son, Robert, moved to the Murrumbidgee, where together they established “Wagga Wagga”. Thomas and his son Thomas Samuel acquired more land in the Dural area and became very successful farmers and orchardists

In 1825, the Great North Road was surveyed right through Best’s grant at Middle Dural. Thomas took advantage of this and built a “Half Way House” for the accommodation of travellers. It is described as “a very comfortable and convenient Inn between Parramatta and Wisemans Ferry”. Custom declined after 1835, but a shop and refreshment place called” Half Way House” was operating on that site in the 1950’s and 60’s. Some of our older residents would remember it. It was run by Bob Berst

Probably the most important reason for remembering the Best family is the establishment of Middle-Dural school. By the 1880’s the population of the district had grown because of the increasing number of orchards, requiring a larger work force. Dural and Galston schools were about 3 miles away. Back then children had to walk to school, sometimes bare footed, and if the Colah Creek (now spanned by a bridge) was flooded the children could not get to Galston School. So the locals started agitating for their own school. The Department of Public Instruction considered they didn’t have enough students to warrant a school, until eventually the Best family gave the land, fenced it and built the first one room school. The Department only had to supply the teacher. The first teacher appointed was

Miss Lucinda White. Her father would not agree to her going to such an isolated place unless suitable accommodation was provided. In the end he built her a small Cottage, which still exists within a much larger house in Smalls Rd. This year the school is celebrating 125 years since opening.

Many people in our community attended Middle Dural school. Shirley Clark (nee Best), who now resides in Rowland Village was one of them. She lived in Cranstons Rd, and attended the school. For High School she had to go to Parramatta. We are just so lucky to have a wide range of schools to choose from, and buses and cars for transport. It is rewarding to think back on the times and struggles of our pioneers.

History cottage, next to the Cenotaph in Galston Park is open again on Wednesdays from 1pm - 4pm and on Sundays from 10am - 4pm. You are welcome to call in and see a display of the history of our district.

At the first meeting for this year of Dural Historical Society on Saturday, 13th February at 2pm. Michael bell will tell us about his recent excursion to Morocco. All welcome.
