The 2014 World Reputation Rankings (WRR) by Times Higher Education Magazine has been released with Har-vard, MIT and Stanford in the first three spots. Around 20 countries have been represented in this list, while India has no representation in the top-200. During the 2013 ranking Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and IIT Bombay placed at 130th and 192nd places. It is pathetic to know that no Indian institute in the top 200 of the Times Higher Education Ranking.

Selecting an engineering course is a difficult choice because either your choice makes you happy rest of your life or after four years of engineering you try to change your field.

How to rate your collegeGood college changes the way you study, the peer group is different, and the quality of placements is much better. While choosing your college, you should take into consideration about the following four main factors and the weightage to be allotted to each when making a decision:

1.Quality of placementsTwo issues have to be kept in mind when you look at place-ments- numbers and the type of companies that recruit the bulk of students. First, identify the average percentage of placements by looking at the Mandatory Disclosures (down-loadable from the website). If the list of companies and the number of offers are given, it is a good sign. See the per-centage of students placed. Since the biggest recruiters are IT companies, and since they recruit from circuit branches (ECE, EEE, IT, CSE) branch-wise placement record is quite essential.

2.Quality of Infrastructure Do not go by buildings and land asset. They are the easy

3.Quality of facultyThis is impossible to assess correctly for any young student. But be on the lookout for years of experience of the faculty. Verify how many of them have less than three to five years of experience; they would be greenhorns with no teaching experience. The more the number of faculty in the team between 10-20 years, the better would be the quality. This is only a ballpark measure so take it as such. Speak with your seniors to see if the quality of faculty is good.

4.Quality industry interfaceLook for tie-ups with Industry, like the Microsoft Research Centre, IBM Research Centre or Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) core. See if the institute has a tech park. Find out whether it has received funding from external agencies for research. Study their website thoroughly.

Like Rahul, one in four en-gineering aspirant takes the IIT admission test JEE. May be one in two would take AIEEE and almost everyone eligible would look at the state-level test/admission. In selecting a branch your first priority must be your passion. While some students run after branches that open up maximum jobs, some students prefer to go by personal likes. Interest is the prime concern.

But if you are not too particular, then go for a branch which opens up opportunities. But keep in mind one hard fact. Opportunities would change according to the market. Core branches in engineering such as civil and mechani-cal are believed to be the oldest branches in engineering study and are considered to be evergreen branches. But in the mid 1980s the demand for civil engineering students saw a slump. At present it has regained its importance and is today considered to be one of the most sought after branches. “At present every fresh graduate has at least three offers from the core sectors. A couple of years back when engineering colleges were spring-ing up at every nook and corner, the colleges were setting up shop with only a few branches such as computer science, IT and EEE. Now most of the colleges are trying to develop the civil engineering branch. This trend proves that the branch is once again looking up,” says K. Rambabu, professor at Andhra University.But Zahid, a blogger and a PhD graduate from IIT Rourkee has a dif-

Do you like puzzles?Computer engineers continually push the capability and applicability of computers in every industry and every facet of modern life. Computer engineers are improving the ability of computers to “see” and “think”. They are making computers more mobile and even incorporating computers into fabrics, clothes, and building materials. They can also become programmers. 2.Electrical & Electronics1.Do you like to repairing electrical appliances?2.Have you had the urge to open the calculator to see its functions?3.Do capacitors, transistors and ICs excite you?4. Have you ever do any electrical jobs like repairing switches, changing tubes and replacing fuse etc.5.Have you assembled a PC after buying the components?6.Is transmission and distribution of electricity of interest to you?7.Do you want a personal robot?So, if you get “YES” for 5 questions, this is your destiny. Mechanical Engineering is your thing. This branch requires a real hard work. Me-chanical engineering field requires an understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynam-ics, materials science, structural analysis and electricity.

Keeping in mind that, a Civil engineer is a person who practices civil engineering and it comprises the jobs like the application of planning, designing, constructing, maintaining, and operat-ing infrastructures. Irrespective of the number of entrances you give or col-leges you apply to, have a list of branches you would prefer. But group them in lots of three. For example, like Mech, ECE, and IT or something else. This is your first group. Have four such combinations. This would help you in deciding between colleges much more easily. Though college matter a lot, unless you are in a branch, which has larger employment potential you may not be picked up by employers. So the branch matters. One way to think of it is that IT deals with the application of computing technology to real life processes and CSE deals with the “science” that facilitates these applications. Further, while CSE focuses on the foundation of computing, IT as a discipline focuses on satisfying the computing tech-nology needs of organizations. So, in a continuum between principles and application, IT focuses more on application, with the goal being to apply knowledge of computing sci-ences for solving problems. However, as the foundations of IT are in Computer Science, Indian universities and colleges deem it feasible to have a CS-based IT programme. This allows a graduate of the programme to choose a career in CS or IT, based on their choice and availability of job

prospects. Mostly corporate make little difference between these disciplines while selecting students for their compa-nies. Curriculum at a glanceUltimately, what would really matter to you as a student is how far the course curriculum is different. Most of the top-notch institutes (Including all IITs, IIITs and most NITs) have either CSE or IT but not both. This clearly signals that the difference between the two branches is not significant enough to warrant their simultaneous presence on a cam-pus, at least in the eyes of the top engineering colleges in the country. Furthermore, for the few colleges that do offer both IT and CSE, the differences in the course structure are minimal. How to make a choice?The fact that the creators of Google, Facebook, YouTube, etc. have all done Computer Science degrees instead of I.T shows why Computer Science is superior. For the average IT professional, an IT degree will suffice. Majority of IT jobs are business-focused, which means you are there to implement and maintain tools to supplement business processes. IT will allow you to broaden your skills beyond just technical skills. You will have more non-techni-cal subjects and electives that allow you to study subjects from other disciplines.CS is good if you want to get into very technical/mathemat-ical-related jobs like game programming, certain finance IT related jobs (not most but some), and in research compa-nies like Google.IT may be a better chocie as you solve more real world problems and focus on more real world IT scenarios. Just saying... a good chunk of IT jobs are in infrastructure, and I know a crapload of infrastructure guys with backgrounds in CS and EE. TBH, those degrees are overkill if you end up being sys/net admins, or solutions architect. IT will give you a much broader perspective for those type of jobs.If you have to choose between IT and CSE, and have both options in hand, it would be wise to decide it on the basis of the reputation and standing of the college rather than the branch. If you have to choose between IT and CSE, in the same college, see what excites you more, design of com-puters and computing system or using computers to solve information management requirements of organization. IT will not open your career prospects overseas, it’s very business minded and what differentiates you from the immense amount of those studying IT, especially in India where they come cheaper (no offence). you will learn more programming in a Computer Science degree, and are able to gain more experience and knowl-

He earns less than what he paid to get his MBA.So from the story of Ramesh Menon brings out the fact that if you have invested unwisely in Management education from institutions that are simply not respected by employ-ers, your career path will not be a cakewalk. Now in India there are more than 4000 B-schools offering an MBA or PGDM. All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), accredited MBAs are highly recognised in India and now there are around 4.25 lakh AICTE-approved MBA seats are up for grabs. And there are around 65 MBA pro-grammes are available from Finance to Entrepreneurship. So the available choices for an MBA-aspirant are plenty. Of late, the churn at the lower end of the B-school spectrum has begun and many institutes find it difficult to fill their seats. So the fact is that MBA education in India has been seeing a sort of consolidation. Those who have a history of repu-tation are gaining more brand appeal and cannot manage the rush of MBA-aspirants. But many run-of-the-mill and medium-class B-schools are struggling for survival. Low student enrollment and the heavy fall in campus recruitment (Campus recruitment have fallen by 40 %) are the major issues. Last year, around 180 B-schools have been closed in major cities of the country due to the lack of desired strength of the students. Another 150 MBA colleges are expected to close this year due to low student enrolment. Hundreds of MBA colleges are having 100 % placements only on paper. In many B-schools, the standard of pedagogy of MBA is gradually deteriorating. Even though the number of insti-tutes offering management courses has risen, the quality of education being offered has declined sharply. There has been a sharp drop in registration for entrance examination


salaries. These salaries are usually offered only to the products of the top few B-schools in the country, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and a few others. Indeed many blue chip companies have different salary packages and different career growth paths for graduates of the top B-schools and those coming from the lesser ones.

Eligibility for an MBAA bachelor’s degree (BA/BSc/B Com/BBA/BBM/BE/B Tech etc.) under the 10+2+3 system from a recognised or deemed university. Students appearing for final year gradu-ate level exam can also apply.

Students’ qualityIf the students are brighter, the learning programme will be richer. The students coming for the interview is a good sign to judge the quality of students. 4. Infrastructure: Computer lab, research, high-speed internet connection, Library, furnished class room- check the quality of every-thing.5. Brand image: Do a research on Internent and various magazines to know about the brand image and ranking of the institute. 6. Location: This is a greater fact which influences the placement and the quality. Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai generally grab good placements due to the proximity to the corpo-rate. 7. 1. Can you brief the history of higher education in gulf countries? The gulf countries has a tradition for higher education as since the early 50’s. Its people were travelling abroad to study in top universities in the UK and Europe. Of course the people were also going as far as India, Egypt and Japan to study. Most of the gulf countries stated their Universities in the seventies, even though this didn’t stop us from going abroad to gain more qualification, learn from the culture over there and bring back not only education but a different way of life.

2.What all future challenges and opportunities do you foresee in higher education sector in Gulf? Since the early 90’s many universities had started to open its doors to branches in the gulf. As we speak we have over 87 universities in the UAE, more than 20 universities in Qa-tar, many in Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Most

of these universities are private depending mainly on expats living in these countries or students who are not allowed to enter the source universities due to visa issues. I believe that the trend is on the upward growth, and since most of these universities are private they all look for means to be-come high ranked and try to produce high quality research. The challenges are mainly in the ranking as whatever they do may not or will not be equivalent to what the ranked universities do, but I think they are trying. What we have in the gulf is strong family ties, new industries and commer-cial growth, so students coming to the gulf will experience this and may end up staying here. The only challenge in my mind is the residency, as our countries do not provide permanent residence due to our naturalization laws. I think


that this may change in the future which will make studying and working in the gulf countries something equal, if not better than going west.3. How do you rate MOOCs(massive open online courses)? Do you think MOOCs are good for students? Continuing education and adult learners is something that I have insisted upon since I started my consultancy; no one should stop learning, as the changes in technology, science, health and business is happening by the second and one cannot live without complete knowledge of these changes. MOOC is never to be evaluated, it is a must and it is necessary, and it is open to everyone on this earth. I am not a person that can say that this piece of information is good, indifferent or bad, I can recommend the courses to students and employees but it’s up to them to take up the courses. I feel though that it’s a pity that such resources are available for human beings and one will not benefit out of them. Nobody can say now that I wish that I studied this or that or the other, it is there, it is free, it is available and it is high quality, the only three things one has to put in is effort, time and perseverance.4. Do you think the elite colleges (including Stan-ford, Harvard and MIT) promoting MOOCs are not only endangering less elite institutions but also undercutting themselves? No I don’t think so, because knowledge is free and everyone believes this, but when it comes to certifications, then one has to pay for it, as one will be using that knowl-edge for further gains.5. Do you think MOOCs could be disastrous for both students and professors? I Think MOOC is revolutionary, and it’s something that should have been done from time memorial, of course prior to the internet revolution the TV could have been used for MOOC, which means we have to have manpower, which was a major inhabitant, or courses will be printed, which again is costly. Having MOOC courses online means that we are allowing the public to benefit “for free” from the knowledge the universities are selling, in the time the public has, which was utilized in watching soap opera. MOOC is a great thing as the parents can be involved with the same courses the son or daughter is taking, which means three for the price of one. Plus it’s high time that the universities start giving to the public instead of continuously taking. 6. Do you think a higher education degree should provide ROI (Return on Investment)? Yes and no. Yes because the students need to use that qualification for finding jobs or doing business; no because we all need to be educated.

7. What are the preferences of the students of UAE regarding with Higher education? Do you think there are still less options in front a student beyond Medicine and Engineering? Unfortunately we have business, medicine and engineering only, and the focus is on these three items. We need to have law, humanities, art and other faculties for a better balance.8. How do you compare pursuing a higher educa-tion program in a foreign country and do the same in a branch campus of a foreign university in Dubai? As I mentioned above branch campuses are established for two reasons, to attract students that cannot go overseas for any reason, and to make money. It is a good thing as they will try to replicate the good work happening in the main campus or inter-benefit. One can combat the disadvantages by starting study abroad and exchange programs. However, to me studying abroad is far better as we gain more from being independent, and seeing how others live.9. What is your take on the fact that the Middle-east countries are still an under-penetrated market as far as higher education is concerned? To begin with I must emphasise the main benefit of higher education, which is research. When one does research one has to have the ability to say everything. So if we continue to prevent people from doing research and discussing the results freely, then we cannot have good education.10. How do you rate Britain, US, Australia, Canada, India and Pakistan in higher education studies? Why Pakistan or India? Every country puts a value on higher education as it’s a multi-billion dollar industry, and because of this the west (and some of the southern hemisphere countries like New Zealand and Australia) have emphasised research to make the universities of a high standard, I am not sure about the applicability of this factor in Pakistan or India.11. Which are the good programs having potential can bring a better job in Gulf countries? Media, Journalism, entrepreneurship, marine biology, hospitality, tourism, and of course the traditional courses such as medicine, engineering, architecture, design, IT etc. 12. Do you think the rising cost of education will be an impediment factor for a quality higher education? We all would rather die of hunger than stop our chil-dren from gaining a higher education qualification, so the cost is not a factor

Can you brief about the higher education scenario in gulf coun-tries?As per a recent report published about higher education in the region, the UAE’s private education sector is among the fastest growing in the world. Population growth and easy access to services has made the UAE one of the top education desti-nations in the Middle East.Interestingly, Dubai has now

outpaced the UK in attracting students from the Middle East and has become the third most popular destination (followed by France and the US) for students from the region, according to figures released by the UNESCO.2. As a leader of Medical educa-tion, how do you see the challenges and opportunities ?Way back in 1997, I was asked by the Government of Ajman to establish a medical college in Ajman. I took up the offer and in a way, accidentally jumped into education and healthcare. Once the college was established, we focused all our efforts in making the institution one of the best in the region, and we suc-ceeded. Today students from over 70 countries pursue their education at our university in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Physical Therapy. We also offer masters programs in Clini-cal Pathology, Toxicology, Human

Reproductive Biology, Public Health and Physiotherapy. Faculty and staff from over 22 countries work in the organization.Later, we were the first to establish the first private teaching hospital in the region. Even establishing a hospital was a big challenge as we did not get enough support from the existing government hospitals and facilities. But, due to God’s Grace, our perseverance and hard work, we are today one of the biggest health-care providers in the country. 3. Do you want to reach out other Medical institutions outside UAE in future? Yes. We are being approached by many countries to set-up campuses based on GMU model. It is based on our success in UAE. Others are reaching out to us to establish similar campuses in their countries to offer international standard health-care education. We are studying

some proposals, and working on our strategic plans.4. Is this part of a globalization of your medical education dream?As per our strategic plan and Vision 2020, we are planning to establish 3-5 campuses in different countries. Plans to initiate more courses are in the pipeline. The GMC Hospitals, first private university teaching hospital plans to establish over 15 hospitals in the region in the next 5-7 years.5. How do you forsee Medical Education landscape in UAE?The country is witnessing an in-crease in the number of private play-ers in the higher education segment, which cater to a growing number of youth. It is driven by the rising importance of high-quality education, backed by the governments, who acknowledge the need for an educa-tion system capable of producing competent professionals.

6. The Mission of the Gulf Medi-cal University is to strengthen and promote excellence in medical education, biomedical research and patient care. Can you elaborate more about your mission?Research will be the main focus area along with education and health-care. The university has established Center for Advanced Biomedical Research & Innovation (CABRI) to pursue excellence in biomedical research that shall have an impact on the education and the outcome of clinical care and Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare (CASH) - a multidisciplinary educational facility that provides high-tech simulated and virtually created hospital set-up for clinical and communication skills teaching and training for students and health care professionals. To the maximum extent possible, we apply our core missions in education, research, and healthcare delivery to develop the means to solve national and regional healthcare problems, including providing accessible, cost-effective healthcare of measur-able quality. In view of the high level of competition at every level, only a good quality education helps a person achieve and grow in life, thus contributing positively to the society. 7. What were the challenges of setting up the Gulf Medical Univer-sity? From the beginning, we had a clear vision in what we wanted to do. Especially in medical education and healthcare, we have to catch with ever changing needs of the society. We have provided the best educa-tion and quality healthcare, which generated loyal clientele. Added to this we have a highly qualified faculty and doctors who contributed to our success. We had a great support from the Rulers and the ministries in

all our endeavors. GMU is the first medical university started by an expatriate in U.A.E. recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research, U.A.E. It is the first institution to accept students of both genders and from all nationalities. It currently has a global composition of the university community made up of an international faculty drawn from 22 countries and a student cohort from 70 countries. GMU is also the first institution to have launched a private teaching hospital (GMC Hospital) in the country, enabling the students to pursue their clinical training and thus serving people from over 175 nation-alities to get high quality healthcare at affordable costs.We have started Summer Training Program - a unique program which places senior clinical students into reputed hospitals and healthcare institutions around the globe to ex-perience the best of clinical training. It also offers Residency programs in Germany.8. A big revolution in the field of Medical Education in China is going on now. They offer Medical degrees for a reasonable price. How do you look at that?It is not the question of offering

programs at a reasonable price as you mention. It is about the quality of education that is offered at afford-able price. In view of the high level of competition at every level, only a good quality education helps a person achieve and grow in life, thus contributing positively to the society.9. What are the preferences of the students of UAE regarding with Higher education? The standard of education in UAE is very high and is of international standards. The visionary leadership of the country has made possible for the entry of private educational institutions and international universi-ties. Prospective students can look forward to good education in the country.The Emiratis and the expatri-ates are increasingly turning towards private education institutions, espe-cially in higher education, due to the quality of the programs that are being offered.10. How do you compare pursuing a higher education program in a foreign country and do the same in a branch campus of a foreign university in Dubai?I have already mentioned about the standards of higher education in UAE. Challenges are being addressed by the authorities on a regular basis. Focusing on strengths, a number

of international universities have campuses or programs in the UAE. Establishment of special zones, including Dubai Knowledge Village and Academic City have enabled many international campuses to be set up in UAE offering a wide range of courses for the students. 11. What is your opinion that the Middle-east countries are still an under-penetrated market as far as higher education is concerned?Today, this observation may not be true. The higher education is gain-ing momentum from governments across the region. With increased focus on improving the quality and reach of education in the region, the universities are offering better job opportunities upon completion of education, which is encouraging an inflow of students. Technology is being used to the best advantage of education. This is the emerging trend now, and governments are also giving top priority.

12. Which are the good programs having potential to bring a better job in Gulf countries?All our programs are of interna-tional standards. The programs are designed and developed by our own expert faculty. All our programs are accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education, UAE. The immense popu-larity and relevance of the institution can be gauged from the fact that every year, the GMU receives over 6,000 applications for admission to medical and healthcare programs of-fered by the university, out of which only 500 applicants are selected for the interview, and 200 are enrolled. Scholarships and education grants are based on academic merit. 13. Do you think the rising cost of education will be an impediment factor for a quality higher educa-tion? I don’t think so. Students and parents are focusing on quality education, which comes at a price. More than

cost, quality of the program, teaching and training standards are given more importance. In fact as per a study, the growth of education sector is driven by factors like the rising im-portance of high-quality education in the society, and a growing spending capacity. We should also consider that providing high quality education and training, costs the institution a lot of money, to sustain, survive and grow. That is one of the reasons for high costs of education. To help the students, Thumbay Group UAE has launched Care & Share Program to sponsor economically deserving but academically brilliant students. Presently about 20% of the students are sponsored through this program, which will increase to 80% in the next five years.
