Everybody’s Talking!Fiery eruption: The island of Heimaey is the only inhabitedisland in the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands), off of Iceland’ssouth coast. These islands are volcanic; Helgafell is the volcanoon Heimaey. Helgafell was thought to be dormant, so the 5,200villagers were quite surprised on January 23, 1973, when themountain erupted in an explosion of burning ash and lava.Luckily, many fishing boats were available to take everyone tothe mainland, and no one was hurt. Lava and fire destroyedabout 100 homes, but town folk rebuilt, and today the remnantsof the eruption are a tourist attraction.Facebook proposal: A Nigerian man named ChidimmaAmedu was tired of trying to find the right woman to marry. So he posted a note on Facebook saying that he wanted toget married, and interested women could reply. The note saidthat the marriage would take place a week later. One of hisFacebook acquaintances, Sophy Ijeoma, responded, thinkingit was just a joke. The two barely knew each other, but theymade a plan to meet two days later. They instantly fell in love.During the next few days, they visited each other’s families, planned a wedding, and tied the knot on the date indicated inAmedu’s Facebook “proposal.”Cake creations: Zhou Yi can decorate a cake like no other. The Chinese cake artist molds fondant (a thick paste of sugarand water that can be colored and flavored) into intricate figures, complete with clothing, jewelry, hair, and eyelashes. He placeshis figures in context, such as a woman sitting on a bench or aman holding a book. Nicknamed “Sugar King,” Zhou toils overhis work to make it perfect, and may redo certain elementsseveral times. His work, which celebrates Chinese culture, is beingrecognized worldwide: he won International Best in Show at the2017 International Cake Competition in Birmingham, England.Realistic tats: Karol Rybakowski is a Polish artist wholearned his craft at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. However, Rybakowski does not use his skill in a conventionalway. Instead, he tattoos incredibly realistic portraits of people. This talented man plies his trade at the Ink-Ognito studio inRybnik, Poland. He has created portraits of such famousactors as Jack Nicholson and Bradley Cooper. The arms andlegs of his clients are the canvas for images of CharlieChaplin, guitarist Jimmy Page, and even portraits of pets.
