Join us for the 21st annual benefit auction Friday, Nov. 1, at the Johnson County Library. The auction begins at 6 p.m. with the reception and silent auction, followed by the oral auction at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the library for $15 apiece. Brannian Auctions LLC will preside and the event will be catered by Sagewood Café. Proceeds will benefit the library’s expansion and renovation project, by raising money for the furnishings for the interior of the library. The library is currently seeking grants which will help fund the

‘Longmire Days’  

draws a crowd

More than 150 people crowded the Johnson County Library on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 17, to get books autographed by local author Craig Johnson and hopefully meet actors from the A&E hit TV show “Longmire,” based on Johnson’s mystery novels.

The book signing was originally scheduled from 1 to 2 pm at the library, but the sheer volume of people and the busy schedules of Johnson and the other actors made for a much longer session. Actor Robert Taylor, who plays Johnson’s main character Sheriff Walt Longmire in the A&E show, arrived after 1:30. Both he and Johnson stayed until nearly 4 p.m. making sure everyone who came was able to get an autograph.

Endurance athlete Jennifer Pharr Davis will speak at the Johnson County Library at 7 pm Tuesday, Oct. 8, about her experiences which including setting a new record for traversing the Appalachian Trail and being the first woman to do so. She has written five books and most recently completed the 550 mile GR11 in the Spanish Pyrenees as well as the Laugavegurinn in Iceland, for a total 600 miles of spent hiking during her second and third trimester of pregnancy. Tuesday, Oct. 1, complete with a showing of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope after school at 4 p.m. Story hour will be at 10 a.m. and feature a Star Wars theme.

expansion. It will add about 10,000 square feet to the existing 8,600 square foot building. The project will also renovate portions of the existing building.

Some of the highlights of the evening promise to be the auctioning of a dinner for eight from Paradise Guest Ranch, a fly fishing trip to the Crow Fair next summer, and donations from an assortment of local businesses.

The Friends of the Library will raffle off their basket of Wyoming made goodies this year. It includes such items as sauces from Wahoo Toppings, a bottle of Table Mountain Wine from Huntley, bars of soap made by Miller Soap Co. of Lance Creek, and more. Raffle tickets are one for $1 and six for $5 and benefit the Friends organization.

The planned expansion and renovation of the Johnson County Library is estimated to cost $3.5 million, which includes the $659,000 already spent by the county and the library foundation to purchase two adjacent properties.

Johnson had copies of all his Walt Longmire mysteries for sale, and people brought a boatload of other souvenirs to sign: hats, posters, even commemorative copies of The Buffalo Bulletin newspaper.

The library staff on hand, Mary Rhoads and Steve Rzasa, were grateful for the assistance given by Mary Loh, a corporate librarian visiting from New York City. The book signing was also a treat for “Longmire” fans because Taylor announced to a very happy crowd that the show had been renewed for a third season.

Fifth novel published Technical services librarian Steve Rzasa has published his fifth novel with Marcher Lord Press, Sandstorm: The Second Sark Brothers Tale. It follows the adventures begun in Crosswind (MLP 2012) of brothers Winchell and Copernicus as they travel a desert region to help a friend uncover a dangerous artifact.

The Wyoming State Library has put together several helpful resources for folks grappling with the piles of information available about the Affordable Care Act (known colloquially as Obamacare) and Health Insurance Marketplace. Libraries across the U.S. have been tasked by the American Library Association and other entities to be a source of information regarding these changes.
