Boosting Frederick Countys back-to-schooClub Z! tutoring will help local children reach grade level and beyond

Its that time o year again!Children are ocking back toschool, and parental choruseso Have you done your home-work yet? are echoing nation-wide. For many amilies, too, this is the time o year when itrst becomes apparent that achild needs a little extra help.

Worrying about a child who isstruggling in school is a terriblestrain or many parents and theproblem cant always be solved byputting in an hour or two a nighthelping with homework or quiz-zing on test topics. Some chil-

dren even very smart children simply need a bit more, wheth-er more time, access to someonewith subject matter or teachingexpertise, a more neutral rela-tionship between tutor and pupil,or some one-on-one assistancebuilding study skills, organiza-tion, and ocusing techniques.

Luckily or many distraughtparents in Winchester and sur-

rounding areas, this is whereClub Z! In-Home utoring Ser- vices enters the picture. Tenations largest one-on-one, in-home tutoring program, ClubZ!s supportive methods have re-sulted in a high success rate andhundreds o thousands o happyclients. utoring is conductedone-on-one in the privacy o thestudents own home, where chil-dren already eel comortable anddistractions can be minimized.Scheduling is exible and parent-riendly, and tutors meet with

parents ater each session to con-sult on their childs progress. ClubZ! tutors are highly-trained andpre-screened, and can provideinstruction in any subject need-ed, rom basic math and read-ing, to core academic subjects,to standardized test preparation.

Club Z! hopes that local ami-lies will consider securing a tu-tor now as their children headedback to school. Whether theyare struggling with the newlevel o academic subject mat-ter, or simply needing to catch

up to their peers, Club Z! canhelp! Our tutors can be a greatsupplement to home-school pro-grams, providing subject-areaexpertise, curriculum support,or standardized test preparationto pupils as needed, in conjunc-tion with parents own eorts.

RICHMOND As ederal di-saster relie runs dry, Virginiacommunities may not get thehelp they need any time soon,as they clean up rom HurricaneIrenes pummeling.

Instead, ederal aid is at risk obecoming ensnarled in a debatethat could rival the debt-ceilingracas, which took Congress bystorm this summer.

U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor, R-7thCongressional District, reiterat-ed this week that any additional

    Te state must pay overtime

But localities dont have pock-ets as deep as the state.

Cities and counties will needto nd cash upront to pay po-lice ofcers overtime, sta emer-gency operations centers and runshelters. I localities are eligible, state or ederal aid could help re-

Regardless o how Congresspays or disaster assistance, Mc-Donnell said the ederal govern-ment is obligated by law to giveaid to eligible communities.

I we meet the ederal require-ments, we expect the ederalgovernment to pay, McDonnellsaid.

Citizens o Frederick Countywill have a much larger role toplay in the Presidential electionnext year than citizens o mostother states. Tis is becausePresident Barack Obamas re-election campaign will be ocus-ing heavily on winning Virginia, and his opponent will be just asocused on recapturing the OldDominion or the RepublicanParty.

In 008, President Obama be-came the rst Democrat sinceLyndon Johnson in 1964 to win

Virginias electoral votes, a eatmade possible largely becauseo the inux o Democratic vot-ers into Northern Virginia asthe Washington and Baltimoremetro areas expand. Most othe scenarios that result in anObama victory include Virginiawinding up in the blue column.

Virginia looks increasingly at-tractive to the Presidents cam-

paign as his popularity erodesrapidly in decisive midwest bat-tlegrounds such as Iowa, Ohio, and even must-win Pennsylva-nia. At the same time, Republi-can candidates now ocused ontheir own primary ght are likelyeeling condent i the Presidentis placing such heavy emphasis

on Virginia. It is very possiblethat Virginias Democratic turn

in 008 was symptomatic o theend-o-term unpopularity oormer President Bush and willswitch back now that Bush is noton the ballot.

North Carolina and Indianaare even more extreme cases ostates Democrats won in 008but will almost certainly lose in

    01. Te question that may de-cide the next Presidential elec-

tion is whether Virginia is in thatcategory, or is actually changingso rapidly that it could be a bat-tleground state so crucial it joinsOhio and Florida as the most de-

Friday ootball made a returnto Frederick Aug. 6 as the ourcounty high school teams acedo against their opponents in theopening game o this season.

Te Sherando Warriors, at-tempting to come back rom theirplayo deeat against Broad Runlast year, took on the MartinsburgBulldogs. Martinsburg is the de-

ending AAA West Virginia StateChampion, while Sherando wasdeeated in the rst round o theplayos last year. Te Warriorswent in as the clear underdogs, but were able to ght Martinsburgalmost to a stalemate. An earlytouchdown by Martinsburg wasall that was needed, as the She-rando oense simply could notput the ball in the endzone.

Arrowhead Stadium was packedto the brim with ans rom bothsides eager to watch a great oot-ball game on a warm Friday nightunder the lights. Te game was adeensive battle with great physi-cality on both sides, with the rstand only score coming when Mar-tinsburgs quarterback ran intothe endzone to put the bulldogsup.

Sherando was orced to rely onmany o their backups to step up,as players dropped like ies withcramps and had to be stretchedout. At one point both o the War-riors quarterbacks were crampingup, as well as both o their runningbacks. Te backups, particularly

on deense, did a antastic job ll-ing in and holding Martinsburg to7 points.

While the Sherando players wereobviously upset and disappointedthat they did not come away witha victory, but they were proud othe spectacular eort they putorth. Te players and coachesseemed to understand the po-tential this season holds now thatthe Warriors have proven theycan go toe to toe with the elite oWest Virginia ootball.Friday also saw the Handley

Judges deeat Old Dominion 31-3, behind a relentless running at-tack on the ground. James Woodwon a close game 4-1 overHeritage while Millbrook was de-

eated 7-10 by uscarora HighSchool. Next issue will include anoverall look at the strengths andweaknesses o each o the ourFrederick County high schoolootball teams.

    Atypical Year or

    Te Master

Tis hasnt been a typical year or

    Jimmie Johnson ... yet.

Johnson, who will turn 36 on

Sept. 17, has won 54 Sprint Cup

races since he became a series reg-

ular in 00. Ten theres the mat-

ter o ve championships. Te last

    ve.

Tis year Johnson has won once.

    Te Pure Michigan 400 marked

    only his second runner-up nish.

On the other hand, Johnson, who

grew up in El Cajon, Cali., ranks

second in the point standings, and

    in his ve championship seasons,

he has never led the points at the

end o the regular season, which is

    now just three races away.

Im very interested to see how

this Chase goes, he said. I think

its the hardest one to predict. Its

going to be a close one. I dont

know who to make the avorite.

Well just have to see how every-

body responds to pressure when it

    really kicks up.

Johnson may not know whom to

make the avorite, but it seems a bit

absurd to pick anyone but ... him.

Ater all, no one else has everwon ve straight championships at

    NASCARs premier level. He could

use a victory or two in the nal

    three regular-season races, but his

consistency to this point does rank

him second, and consistency is im-

    portant in the Chase.

Johnson was unable to hold o

    Kyle Busch at Michigan Interna-

tional Speedway, one o ew tracks

where he has never won. Ater-

ward, he said his only regret was

    not winning.

    I had every opportunity handed

to me, he added. (Crew chie)

    Chad (Knaus) made an awesome

call to get me to pit road beore the

(next to last) caution (ag) came

    out. I had a second

    nal caution) at (Bu

    start and didnt have

    by.

    No excuses. I just

    get him today.

    Naturally, Johnsohis experience in the

    Youre going to b
