We in the East Mountain area are privileged to have a great resource, the Museum of the American Military Family (MAMF), in our own back yard. The only museum of its kind, the MAMF was started in 2011 by director Circe Olson Woessner, herself a mili- tary wife and mother, with the help of like-minded Board members, many of whom are local residents, also. The Museum celebrates the diversity and commonality of the military family experience: unique as the individual people and families, but with bonds of shared commitment and experi- ences that span generational gaps, bridge the branches of military service, and join servicemen and women, military spouses, and their children in sisterhood, brotherhood, and “brat -hood.” The vision of MAMF is to provide a forum for dialogue; a repository of stories, documents, and memorabilia from all aspects of military family life throughout our nation’s history; a resource for information and encourag ement; an inspiration for future generations to uphold the ideals of national service. To these ends, the Museum provides 11 blogs and other social media tools. You can find these on their website at www.museumoftheamericanmilitaryfamily.org. They also use Operation Footlocker as an interactive physical display, which takes mementos of American military family experience anywhere in the world, as requested. These are organic displays that collect more items and memories as they circulate. In cooperation with the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History in ABQ, MAMF is creating a long-term exhibit to open Memorial Day of 2014. With the working title of “Sacrifice in Support of Service”, this display will of- fer not only information, but hands-on elements exploring the concepts of identity, pride, “making do” and sacrifice which characterize military family life. Their hope is to acquire and rehabilitate old military housing units to form a museum complex. They have plans for several small “homes” with rotating exhibits, a school portable building, memorial gardens, and an adaptive play- ground that is accessible to those with disabilities. The MAMF invites you to drop by their Operation Footlocker on display in the Tijeras Library this month. Sacrifice and Support of Service

So many aspects of our culture and society we take for granted! Even our right to disagree about what is good and bad, and express our opinion freely. It’s Firewood Season As the nights get chilly so comes the need to keep our homes and families warm. Last month we discussed what to look for while shopping for fuelwood. This month, lets looks at some money saving ideas, safety and helpful tips. Helpful hints and safety:

1. Avoid a chimney fire. Have your chim-ney cleaned and inspected at least once a year. Chimney fires happen when creo-sote, a product of incomplete combustion, builds up in the chimney of a fireplace or wood stove. Build up is natural but can happen more quickly when trying to make the fire last longer by cutting off most of

the air supply. Burning firewood that is "green" (high moisture content) can also increase build up as moisture from the burn-ing fuel cools the fire and the smoke. 2. Stack your wood at least 30 feet from your house. Sup-ply smaller stacks indoors as needed. This not only reduces the amount of fuel available in the event of accidental fire, but also reduces the number of rodents heading indoors for warmer environments. 3. Keep your wood covered (tarp or shelter) and off the ground to keep moisture out. If you don’t know why moisture is bad . . . start reading this article again from the top. 4. Teach children about fire safety when it come to safe fireplace practices. Fire is not a toy. Set ground rules about who, how and when to start a fire, add fuel, closing dampers, etc. 5. Keep flammable items away from the fire. Items do not have to be touching the flame or hot metal to catch fire. Radi-ant heat can quickly bring items in close proximity to a tem-perature at which they will ignite. 6. Do not use flammable liquids to start your fire. No, really — don’t use flammable liquids to start your fire. Even if you’ve already purchased your wood for the winter, here are some ways to save money on future wood costs: 1. Just like other things, buying in bulk can save you money, The more you buy, the less it costs. If you have the space to store it (and the money), buy it in volume. 2. Price shop but be smart - sometimes the best price isn't the best value. Get referrals from others. When you find a vendor you like, build a relationship with them and stick with them. 3. If the vendor will let you, pick up the wood yourself at his lot. Many vendors will give you a discount if they don’t have to do what it takes to deliver. If you do have it delivered, you can save a few dollars on a stacking fee by stacking your own wood at home. 4. Plan ahead. Again, if you have the room, you can buy green wood in the spring and season the wood yourself. 5. Cut your own. Contact the National Forest office near you and ask them how you can obtain a permit to cut your own. It's lots of work but it will save you quite a bit of money (personal use permit is $10 per cord with a two cord minimum and 8 cord seasonal maximum).
