Program Summary The Fraternity and Sorority Life Chapter Standards Program is based upon the Shared Principles for Greek Life Organizations and the California State Universities. The fraternities and sororities at CSU Stanislaus reflect the dynamic and diverse campus community. Currently, there are twelve international/national and local fraternal organizations. The California State University system views fraternities and sororities as invaluable partners in the educational mission of the university and the development of successful citizens. The beliefs and values which will advance the fraternal movement and provide an opportunity for the fraternity and sorority system to grow within the university’s support requires commitment to the following principles:

• The academic success and retention of fraternity and sorority members from admission to graduation; • The development of well-educated, well-rounded individuals who positively impact their campus and

community through their personal integrity, social responsibility, community service, philanthropy, leadership and involvement in campus programs and activities;

• Peer education that stresses the values of integrity, respect, responsible use of alcohol, and responsibility for one’s actions, and concern for the welfare of others;

• Unity of purpose and collaboration among fraternities and sororities that contribute to a wider sense of community on campus, throughout the state of California and around the nation;

• On-going assessment and evaluation to promote open systems that support nondiscriminatory recruitment and diversity within membership; and

• Strong alliances with fraternity and sorority alumni that foster lifelong support of the university and its fraternity and sorority community.

The values, which all the fraternal organizations at California State University, Stanislaus ascribe to, stem from the principles set forth by the CSU system and that of each organizations commitment for growth and self-discovery through fraternal membership. Representatives of the fraternities and sororities and the Office of Student Leadership and Development created the Fraternity and Sorority Chapter Standards Program in the winter of 2006. The goal of the program is to collectively develop dialogue and directives as identified by the fraternity and sorority community for the purposes of creating a plan for chapter excellence. This program will foster continual discussion among fraternity and sorority members, advisors and the Office of Student Leadership and Development to support positive programming and enhancing the fraternity and sorority membership experience. The valuable feedback will assist in identifying what further initiatives and support can be developed to continually enhance the fraternity and sorority membership, as a safe, positive, and fulfilling experience.

SMART Goal SettingSMART Goal Setting Form should be returned to the Office of Student Leadership and Development, Room 103, University Student Union Building. Following are components of an effective goal – one that describes performance standards that will “tell us what good behavior looks like.” The SMART acronym can help us remember these components. Specific The goal should identify a specific action or event that will take place. Measurable The goal and its benefits should be quantifiable. Achievable The goal should be attainable given available resources.

Realistic The goal should require you to stretch some, but allow the likelihood of success.

Timely The goal should state the time period in which it will be accomplished. Here are some tips that can help you set effective goals: 1. Develop several goals. A list of five to seven items gives you several things to work on over a period of time. 2. State goals as declarations of intention, not items on a wish list. "I want to apply to three schools" lacks power. "I will apply to three schools," is intentional and powerful. 3. Attach a date to each goal. State what you intend to accomplish and by when. A good list should include some short-term and some long-term goals. You may want a few goals for the year, and some for two- or three-month intervals. 4. Be specific. "To find a job" is too general; "to find and research five job openings before the end of the month" is better. Sometimes a more general goal can become the long-term aim, and you can identify some more specific goals to take you there. 5. Share your goals with someone who cares if you reach them. Sharing your intentions with your parents, your best friend, or your teacher will help ensure success. 6. Write down your goals and put them where you will see them. The more often you read your list, the more results you get. 7. Review and revise your list. Experiment with different ways of stating your goals. Goal setting improves with practice, so play around with it.
