As our stunning cover photo for this month shows, the heavy snow fall in April was a wonderful novelty and the place was turned into a winter wonderland whilst mixed with

the incredible colour palate that we are lucky to be surrounded by in our region this time of year. The multi coloured deciduous trees of Arrowtown seemed to pop out of the snow like wild fire and we are once again reminded of how lucky we are to call this

place home.

There is something about the mountains covered in snow that gives them an air of magnificence not obtained to the same level in the summer months. The snow bunnies

amongst us quickly dusted off our gear and hit the slopes, with many comparing the runs up Coronet to be the same coverage as the middle of the 2014 season.

The May edition is the start of a new look and feel for the flyer that we are ever developing, and as your local magazine, we strongly encourage you to get in touch

and share your ideas for how we can make the content even better.

Are there topics that you would like us to cover? Do you perhaps have a local business that may be keen to provide an editorial every month? We would love to hear from you!

A huge injection of an extra 140,000 Air New Zealand domestic seats into and out of Queenstown Airport next year could be worth an estimated $280 million to the region, according to expert estimates.

The increase is so significant that planned expansions and improvements at the rapidly-growing Queenstown Airport will probably have to be fast tracked to cope with demand.

Queenstown Airport Corporation chief executive Scott Paterson says while it’s all great news for the region, it’s too soon for the airport to make a call on project timings. “We’ll have a better indication of what the preliminary

flight schedule will look like for next summer after our slot co-ordination process begins in a couple of months’ time,” says Scott. They’ll be looking closely at flight and passenger peaks before determining whether some planned capacity enhancements needed to be brought forward.

Huge growth has already prompted development of a new $14 million international terminal expansion, which opens next month (June). It will double the size of the airport’s international operations, allowing the airport to process 1000 passengers an hour and accommodate future growth. “We’re mindful that we’re constrained for land so we need to give some thought as to what further changes may be necessary,” says Scott. The airport can only operate during daylight hours at present, so Scott says it’ll be really busy, but “we’ll handle it”. “We just can’t take any more flights for a large part of this winter,” he says. “The big peak is between 1pm and 4pm when the majority of international flights arrive and we need to turn them around before dark.” However the corporation hopes to have after-dark, evening flights operating by next winter, which will alleviate pressure. Peak times will be spread, with less pressure on facilities

and services. “Then we won’t have to continually build bigger just to be able to accommodate a peak period of the day.”

In addition to the huge Air New Zealand boost, Jetstar is expected to bring an extra 20,000 passengers to Queenstown this winter, after increasing Trans-Tasman services by 26 percent between March and October, compared with the same period last year. Melbourne services will increase to 275 return services from 272 last year, Sydney to 254 return flights from 226 last year, and the new Gold Coast service represents more than 100 additional return flights. Qantas will also add more than 1,000 extra Trans-Tasman seats weekly during winter.

Queenstown Chamber of Commerce chairman Charlie Phillips says it all shows an enormous amount of confidence in the region and its ability to create a great visitor experience. “Controlled growth is great. There’s a lot of planning going on at the moment, so it’s important to see it brought to fruition to ensure we can cope with the growth and it’s seen as a positive thing,” says Charlie. “Destination management is the thing we need to focus on for the future,” he says.

Air NZ will increase its total Queenstown capacity by more than 650,000 seats for the financial year from June, 2015.

110,000 of those will be on the Auckland-Queenstown route

More than 20,000 seats will be added to the Christchurch-Queenstown route

More than 12,000 seats will be added between Queenstown and wellington

Queenstown Trans-Tasman flights are up 13 percent on top of a 25 percent increase last winter. On average a record 59 direct flights will arrive from East Coast Australia each week during peak winter.

FacT BoXThe Frankton Community Association’s Scott Freeman says while rapid airport

growth is great for the region, it’ll “bring forward the inevitable”. Dangers have been increasing around ‘old Frankton’,

particularly McBride Street, as Frankton-based workers continue to park vehicles along both sides of the residential street. “A few weeks ago a petrol tanker came

along McBride Street going about 60kms an hour,” he says.

The association has been asking for action for some time now and tempers were

getting a little frayed at its recent AGM. however, Queenstown Lakes District councillor Alexa Forbes and council

transport manager Denis Mander have assured they are looking into the issue.

MAY RECORDSBrace yourselves. May can be quite chilly in the Wakatipu, even though it’s still officially autumn. Our weather expert David Crow is predicting “one or two fairly cold outbreaks” this winter and says we can normally expect a few decent snowfalls around the end of May. ”We have had some pretty good snowfalls during May and we often get snow settling in the Queenstown downtown area later in May.” He’s predicting a slightly colder winter this year, after last year’s warmer one, with a good dose of cold outbreaks. ”I think it’ll be a better year for the skiers this year – fairly cold, but overall not terribly much colder than normal. ‘ Slightly colder temperatures this winter should bode well for snowmaking too. April was on par with predictions, but a heavy rainfall of 31.5mm, which fell within a few hours during Anzac Weekend, sent everyone diving indoors and very low Lake Wakatipu levels rising slightly.

Album of the month – Broods, Evergreen. It's been whirlwind year for the two who independently released their debut single 'Bridges' earlier this year – a track that set off a heated bidding war to sign the group. Broods signed with Capitol Records in the USA, Polydor Records in the UK, and Island Australia & Universal NZ.

Georgia and Caleb started playing together around the age of ten, more recently, playing together as part of (the now defunct) Peasants. The two started spending time with Joel Little in the studio late last year while he was also working on Lorde's Grammy nominated 'Pure Heroine'.

Book of the month –That Girl From Nowhere by Dorothy koomsonClemency Smittson was adopted as a baby and the only connection she has to her birth mother is a cardboard box hand-decorated with butterflies. Now an adult, Clem decides to make a drastic life change and move to Brighton, where she was born. Clem has no idea that while there she’ll meet someone who knows all about her butterfly box and what happened to her birth parents. As the tangled truths about her adoption and childhood start to unravel, a series of shocking events cause Clem to reassess whether the price of having contact with her birth family could be too high to pay...

Movie of the month –Pitch Perfect, Coming out May 7th 2015.The sequel centers on the Barden Bellas entering an international a cappella competition that no American team has ever won. Pitch Perfect stars Anna Kendrick (Beca), Skylar Astin (Jesse), Brittany Snow (Chloe), Anna Camp (Aubrey), Rebel Wilson (Fat Amy), Adam DeVine (Bumper) and Alexis Knapp (Stacie) reprise their roles from the original blockbuster, alongside new cast member Hailee Steinfeld. Elizabeth Banks also returns as Gail, and makes her feature directorial debut with this highly-anticipated sequel.

HealthChallenge

Anyone who knows me knows about my love of the green stuff – juice that is! While most people might opt for a Red Bull, I almost always turn up to a long hospitality shift, with a bottle of freshly cold-pressed green juice in my hand to get me through the day and night. I like to think of it as Green Bull –a 100% natural energy drink without all the processed sugar, caffeine and synthetic vitamins.

So what’s the big deal about juicing?By juicing vegetables you are able to receive a high concentration of nutritional goodness (vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients) with very little volume, so it’s a great way to get extra vitamins and nutrients into your diet and get a natural energy boost.

Drinking your vegetables also allows you to absorb all these nutrients more quickly and easily because without all the fibre, your digestive system doesn’t have to work so hard and more nutrients get absorbed into your blood stream than if you were to eat your veges whole.

The taste of green juice may take a while to adjust to. If you are new to juicing, try adding apple or another preferred fruit to make it more palatable. However your taste buds will adjust over time and you will find you can reduce the fruit content, as fruit juice is high in fructose and can cause spikes in blood sugar levels so should be consumed less often. You may also consider adding beetroot which is a naturally sweet root vegetable (and will make your ‘Green Bull’ more red!).

Smoothies are a great option as well – and because they also include all the fibre, which becomes more easily digested because it gets broken down in the blending process, smoothies will leave you feeling fuller for longer and will release the nutrients into your blood stream more slowly thus avoiding blood sugar spikes. Some fruits and vegetables are better suited for smoothies – I wouldn’t recommend trying to juice a banana or an avocado!

Check out Lila B’s website at www.lilabwellness.co.nz

Juicing tips:• Invest in the best juicer you can afford. Cheaper centrifugal juicers create more heat and oxygen which destroy the enzymes and nutrients more quickly. Cold press juicers are more expensive but will extract more juice so provide better value in the long term.

• When starting out, ask around your friends and family to see if they have a juicer you can borrow – I guarantee you’ll find someone with a juicer gathering dust in the corner of their cupboard.

• Drink your juice straight away. Light and air will start to destroy the nutrients within 15 minutes. Cold press juicers will preserve the nutrients longer as will storing your juice in a dark airtight bottle.

Sitting in front of a screen for too long, whether it's a TV, a computer, or an iPad, means you're not up and moving around. Lack of physical activity isn't the only downside of too much screen time though, It can also disrupt sleep, decrease your attention span, and lead to mindless eating.

We are all guilty of sitting on the couch mindlessly flicking through Facebook, Instagram or anything really, sometimes I find myself doing it and not even noticing! SO this month I challenge you to put down the Phone, IPad, turn off the tv or laptop and keep it off right until you go to bed.

Allocate 30 minutes a day (in the evening if you wish, just make sure it’s at least 2 hours before bed) to answer emails, flick through social media and then leave all your devices alone for the evening -

This will hopefully give you a better quality of sleep, help with de stressing in the evening and give you more time to get outside and enjoy the fresh air.

This challenge is definitely good for mind body and soul. Jump on board and let me know how you’re getting on #franktonflyerhealth and let me know how you get on!

This month the challenge is a little bit different, it’s not so

much a physical health challenge as it is a mental one. This month

I challenge you to trade in your screen time for a little bit more

time with family or do something to benefit your health.

On a cold, windy Autumns eve, the Stables Arrowtown wrapped it’s cosy, warm and comforting arms around us as we stepped inside.

We were lucky to get the last table as we didn’t book ahead, which we will definitely ensure we do next time.

Surrounded by the rich heritage of the 142 year old building, you can’t help but feel the history in the schist walls. Built in 1873 for Bendix Hallensteins horses, The Stables creates a romantic ambience suitable for couples or small groups in the lower dining area but with space upstairs for larger groups.

We were seated in an intimate corner of the lower dining room, with candlelight bouncing off the kauri

beams. My merlot was served at perfect temperature, and our meals arrived not very long after ordering.

To start we shared the Stables mini loaf, served with garlic and herb butter ($8), and greatly enjoyed the succulent ½ rack of baby pork ribs ($20), which it’s delicious BBQ sauce was great to dip our bread into.

Already feeling content with our starters, our main did not disappoint! My 6’5” partner is not so easily satiated, however he was more than happy with the size of his main.

I chose the Venison Osso Bucco ($33), a slow roasted venison shank, together with a hearty country mix of vegetables & red wine, served with creamy mash. My other half ordered the lamb ($32), again slow cooked

to perfection in a tomato & red wine base, served with potato gnocci.

I must make mention of a gorgeous attention to detail with the plates our food was served upon. Keeping in with the character of the gold mining history of the town, our plates replicated black gold pans, which tied everything in very nicely.

Not usually one for dessert, I have a general rule where if my favourite dessert is on the menu I will have it, otherwise dessert will be for another day. Lucky for me, Sticky Date Pudding ($13) was at the top of the menu. Served with Salted Caramel and vanilla bean ice-cream, it was the perfect finish to a delicious meal.

For a cosy, intimate meal, perfect for warming you up on a cold winters night, book in with The Stables as they will not disappoint.

Beetroot, Broad Beans, Brussel sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Chives and Garlic cloves can all be sown early May with harvest for most from June – July. With

winter fast approaching we need to start thinking about

frosts and the effects it has on our vege gardens. Although the vege for the month of May is strong and can deal

with bitter frosts, it’s important to know how to prevent and

reduce the effects it may have on your plants. Mulching is a

good way to protect very small gardens. Use several layers of newspaper, straw or chopped

cornstalks. For those with large gardens, it may be more practical to protect only a few plants of each crop. Blankets, tarps, floating row covers or other large materials can be

placed over rows of vegetables to supply insulation.

The Audi Quattro Winter Games NZ 2015 team, currently operating from Frankton headquarters, is gearing up for the international event scheduled for August 21-30 in the Queenstown, Lake Wanaka and Naseby areas.

Planning is well advanced for the biennial high profile winter sports event which has attracted $1.5m from the Government’s Major Events Fund and a second term of sponsorship from Audi New Zealand. A further $1.25m from the Government has already been confirmed for Winter Games NZ 2017.

The Games include alpine skiing, cross country skiing, free skiing, snowboarding and curling using Coronet Peak, Cardrona Alpine Resort, Snow Farm NZ and the Naseby Indoor Curling Rink as its venues. A downtown festival programme is also included featuring films, live music and entertainment in Queenstown and Lake Wanaka.

A feature of the world-class skiing action at Coronet Peak are the adaptive events which this year include two International Paralympic Committee Alpine Skiing (IPCAS) Southern Hemisphere Cup (SHC) races which will showcase some of the best adaptive ski racers in the world.

The current IPCAS Downhill and Super-G dual world champion and 2014 Paralympic silver medallist, Corey Peters, and fellow Kiwi 2010 Paralympic gold medallist Adam Hall, who both train at Lake Wanaka, will be vying for spots on the podium before a home crowd.

Sun, food and coffee lovers were disappointed to see the popular Saturday Remarkables Market wind up for its fifth

season on April 18, with huge growth in numbers yet again.

More than 2000 people flocked to the Big Red Barn at Remarkables Park each week for the packed pre-Christmas markets and Remarkables Market manager Sherryn Smith says they averaged more than a thousand visitors each Saturday throughout the 6-month market season. “Our shopper survey revealed that the most popular food stalls were European Bakery, Zamora – The Meat Preachers and Bacon Butties, with Stir Tea, Cherry Tree Farm and Melt Candles also taking high honours in other sections,” she says. “We’re working through feedback and throughout winter will be formulating plans for next season, says Sherryn. “However, at this stage we intend to reopen the market again for a sixth summer season at Labour Weekend (October 24) and run through until Easter (March 26), which would be a 23-week season.” Stall numbers are growing each year with artisans from around the region selling crafts, gifts and yummy local produce, either prepared to eat on site to enjoy while listening to the mellow tones of live music, or to take away.

Reluctant Frankton mountaineering hero Ben Dare will be awarded a top civilian bravery medal by the New Zealand Royal Humane Society next month for saving fellow top mountaineer Scott Scheele in the Himalayas in 2013. Dare, will be awarded the medal at Government House in Wellington in June for the incredible, life-saving, 24-hour rescue in a severe snowstorm around 6500m up Anidesha Chuli. The pair were about 400m below the summit climbing a vertical ice face when an avalanche hit, leaving Scott dangling below, incapacitated by concussion. Dare, who already has a number of climbing accolades to his name, will join the talented line-up of speakers at a newly-introduced American Express Queenstown Winter Festival event. The Queenstown structural engineer will share stories of his adventures with the New Zealand Alpine Team.

The winter-themed Pecha Kucha, sponsored by Macpac, also includes artist and explorer Joseph Michael and Bruce Wells – father of New Zealand’s top snow sport athlete brothers Jossi, Byron, Beau-James and Jackson. It’ll be held at the Queenstown Memorial Centre on June 25, during the June 19 – 28 festival. Pecha Kucha has quickly become a worldwide phenomenon as a fast-paced evening of sharing stories and ideas, following a simple presentation format where a speaker shares 20 images with the audience, with only 20 seconds to narrate the images.

Several years ago Gwen Taquet was a volunteer at Lake Wakatipu Home assisting the activities co-ordinator. When the position became vacant recently she needed no persuading to apply.

“I love working with the residents at the home and saw an opportunity to get more involved. I am extremely excited to continue the excellent work that has already been done by my predecessors.”

Gwen hails from New Hampshire but has lived in the Wakatipu for 16-years together with her husband Jean-Francois and children Tristan (12) and Sofia (10).

As activities co-ordinator Gwen is responsible for organising a daily programme of activities and events as well as weekly outings for the residents.

“We are blessed to live in an amazing community which provides our residents with so much support. From local musicians to schools, knitting clubs, children’s choirs and volunteer drivers – the list goes on and on. Everyone at the home is so grateful for their generosity.”

Gwen says she is looking forward to the challenges ahead and to building relationships with the residents and their families – “that’s the exciting part of the job. The staff too are all so supportive, it’s a wonderful environment.”

The Queenstown Trails Trust wants to know what people think of its 110km Queenstown Trail and is calling for feedback via the New Zealand Cycle Trails on-line survey.

CEO Mandy Kennedy says it’s just as important for local people to take part in the survey as it is for visitors.

“We are looking at questions about trail conditions, amenities, food, beverage and signage among other things which will provide us with some excellent information we can use as a basis for change and improvement if need be.”

The survey can be accessed on www.getsmartglobal.com/nzcycletrails.

The Trust hopes to have its commuter trail from Glenda Drive to the Wakatipu Gun Club, close to the Shotover River, up and running again shortly after it was affected by severe weather in February.

“We are working to get this section of the trail open as quickly as possible and hope its closure hasn’t caused too much inconvenience,” says Mandy.

Keep an eye out on the trail for Mandy and Kaye Parker on their high-end Charge About sponsored electric bikes – they will be checking out the trail regularly and writing a blog about their experiences.

Charge About director Campbell Read wants Queenstown to follow the European lead using sustainable transport options.

“Queenstown is the ideal place to use e-bikes to commute to work in safety because there are so many off road trail options.”

Business owners & managers, take a minute to have a wee look around you, look at your building signage, your business cards, your email signature, your website and anything else with your branding upon it.

Now ask yourself – Is your branding consistent, are you using the same logo, same colours, same fonts? Do you even have a logo?

This is one of the basics ofbusiness branding that surprisingly so many businesses get wrong.

We have many clients that have recently opened a business and have done all of the branding work themselves (usually to save them money), then bring us that content to turn into print or signage etc, and it is alarming as to how often every aspect of their business

branding has inconsistencies.

Not only do we see this in new businesses, we surprisingly see this in well established businesses.

At Brandland, when you are opening a business or bringing your existing business to us to review, we sit down with you to ensure that right from the start your branding is as strong as it possibly can be, so that from the day you open you are catching your clienteles attention, and then place that strong branding across all elements of your branding.

There is much that you can do yourself to get the ball rolling in your branding development, taking the time to sit down and think about your business branding sets you up for a strong future.Think about what colours you

like, what fonts catch your eye, google other logos and make note of the ones that you like the look of, really determine what you like and what you don’t like, and then we can work with you to mix your ideas with our experience and come up with the best branding for your business.

By defining who your brand is, you create the foundation for all other components to build on. Your brand definition will serve as your measuring stick in evaluating any and all marketing materials and strategies. Below are a series of questions to get your started on determining your brand definition, create a scrap book, cut pictures out of magazines, or just write the answers in a notebook, the important thing is to get you thinking about your business branding.

One hundred years ago, on May 5 1915, the Wakatipu Golf Club was officially opened on a site in Frankton, eventually occupying three separate locations , before taking up permanent residence at the current Kelvin Heights course. The first course was in Southberg Avenue taking in land now occupied by the Frankton Arm Tavern. The course was rough and equipment primitive and the greens were watered by horse drawn cart. In 1936 the Kingston to Queenstown road was opened carving through the parts of the course, making it dangerous for players. Hence an alternate location was found at the aerodrome at Frankton. The course criss-crossed the runway and one of the key local rules called for balls to be removed from the runway, before being played, and for players to stand still when planes landed and took off.By 1958 with a growth in air traffic, it was time to move again and the club, now renamed as the Queenstown Golf Club, took up headquarters at the existing Frankton golf course site. By 1968 plans were being mooted for an 18-hole course and the Kelvin Peninsula site was earmarked, because of its outstanding views, for future development. Thanks to the dedication and commitment of a core group of club members the project got underway once the site was leased in 1970. The $10,000 price tag to have the course professionally designed was too high so club members with the appropriate skills took on the demanding job.Prominent businessman Hylton Hensman created the course layout using topographical maps and together with golfing stalwart, John Grant,

spearheaded the development along with Keith Barclay, George Barclay and Bill Grant. Other club members put in hundreds of hours of volunteer work and young children were enlisted to removes stones and rocks from the fairways. The new Queenstown golf course at Kelvin Heights was officially opened in April 1975 and today is one of New Zealand’s most scenically appealing courses attracting players from all over the world.Club general manager, John Stephens says the 100-year milestone is being marked by several events during the year.On May 17 ambrose tournaments are being held at both the Kelvin Heights and Frankton golf courses.“The centenary celebration event is also doubling as an official opening of the renovation project at Frankton golf course with three greens, on the first and ninth holes and a new practice green, being brought into play. We hope people, including families and junior golfers, will enter the three person ambrose competition as well as experienced golfers. It’s a fun tournament to highlight the importance of the golf club in the community over the past 100-years.”A significant centenary project is the “wall of remembrance” which is being developed alongside the practice green at Kelvin Heights.“It will be a place to recognise past members with their name and details inscribed on brass plaques attached to the wall” says John. “It will be an attractive feature and reinforce the role the club plays in the lives of its members.”

In its prominent location in the heart of the Remarkables Park Town Centre, the Unichem Remarkables Pharmacy has a standout reputation for its focus on health and wellness in the community. Pharmacist Glenn Mitchell says the pharmacy has several roles but the chief motivation is to provide top level assistance to their clientele.

“Our aim obviously is to help people who are ill to recover,” he says. “But we also try where possible to offer prevention advice to stop people becoming ill. It’s a two pronged approach.”

This winter for the second successive year the pharmacy is offering a flu vaccination service.

“It’s very simple for people to pop into the pharmacy and receive their flu shot because we are so accessible. We have appropriately trained staff and we thoroughly recommend that people do get vaccinated. The flu is highly contagious and anyone can become infected.”

Glenn says while appointments are not strictly necessary people should make a prior check to ensure qualified staff are in-store to administer the vaccine.

Remarkables Pharmacy has an extensive range of health and beauty products.

“We have many skincare products, indulgence and pampering cosmetics as well a diverse range of make-up. Our local and out-of-town clientele, including people from Auckland and Australia, frequently make return visits because of the exceptional selection we offer.”

The New Zealand made Evolu range of products is showcased at the pharmacy and has attracted a significant following.

“Evolu botanical skincare is all about balance. Healthy skin depends on natural processes being in balance and Evolu restores this balance where necessary.”

Kati Kasza, who created the range, was inspired by her mother, a trained botanist and herbalist and her father who had a high profile as one of New Zealand’s winemaking pioneers.

“Kati gained her understanding of the health benefits of plants from her mother and from her father an appreciation of quality ingredients and the power of blending them well,” says Glenn. “In Kati’s words Evolu helps put back into the skin what is lost. It replenishes nutrients, boosts natural defences and renews hydration and vitality.”

State-of-the-art photo printing machines have recently been installed at Remarkables Pharmacy.

“People can come in and connect up their phones and tablets instantly printing high quality photographs,” says Glenn. “We are pleased to be able to offer this service seven days a week.”

The Unichem Remarkables Pharmacy prides itself on providing an excellent environment for customers. “We want people to enjoy the experience when they visit the pharmacy and we are committed to offering excellent service and follow-up to all our clients.”

One relationship which is

always with us is the one we

share with our mothers. Mums

have a lot to juggle most of

the time so Mother’s day is the

perfect day for her to relax and

unwind. Below we have some

helpful ideas and tips for you

to do with or for your mum this

mother’s day.

We all know mother’s day is an important day to pamper and treat your mum whether its breakfast in bed, flowers or a voucher for a relaxing massage, but sometimes we have mums that aren’t so easy to buy for… so here’s a few ideas for those guys and gals out there that are struggling for a nice way to show mum you appreciate her!

A book is always a win for a gift for a mum, you can pick almost any book with something that interests your mum – there’s books on just about anything these days. I recommend whitcoulls for just about any book with loads of new releases too.

You can never go wrong purchasing flowers for your mum, a beautiful gesture that is almost always appreciated and loved! A perfect gift for your mum if she lives far away ( there’s lots of flower delivery companys)

Day spa or massage vouchers - I don’t know a single woman out there that doesn’t love some time out from the kids to enjoy a relaxing massage or day spa, treat her this mother’s day with a de-stress and relaxation overload.

And sometimes you don’t even have to buy anything, a lot of the time the most appreciated gifts are handmade cards, a phone call or homemade breakfast in bed, sometimes the time and effort you put into making something means more than any purchased gift.

And finally, If your struggling to think of things to do on mother’s day, don’t forget the Jennian homes Mother’s Day fun run/walk, A great opportunity to get out in the sun and do something fun with your mum! And if that’s not her thing theres plenty of activities around Queenstown to keep her entertained, or perhaps she’d just like to hang out and relax at home.

This hut was built in the 1930s by Bill Summers. He and his son Sam prospected here and lived in the hut for 10 years. You can stay overnight at the hut if you wish, no bookings required – first in first served. This is an exceptionally pretty walk through the woods and along rushing streams. This was a gold mining area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and traces of that activity, including Ben Summers’ Hut, which was built more than a hundred years ago. This walk is especially good for a hot day because so much of it is under thick cover.
