Franklin D. Roosevelt: An American Hero
Franklin D. Roosevelt was born into a wealthy family in New York. His family believed in public service, so after receiving a law degree, Roosevelt became active in politics. During law school he married Eleanor Roosevelt and later became a member of New York’s state government and worked in the state capital. In 1921, Roosevelt developed a serious disease called polio that affected his ability to walk, but that did not keep him from serving in government. Roosevelt became the governor of New York in 1929. A few years later he became President of the United States and moved to the White House.
Franklin Roosevelt was President of the United States longer than any other president. He believed that the most important work he could do was public service, or working for the good of others. 1929 was the start of a long period of hard times called the Great Depression. Roosevelt promised a “New Deal” that would help Americans get back to work. Roosevelt told Americans that the “only thing we have to fear is fear itself”.
On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. After the attack, the United States entered World War II. The country looked to Roosevelt for leadership during the Great Depression and the war. In 1944, he was elected President for the fourth time. Franklin Roosevelt never gave up because he had courage and confidence.
