On February 1st at our Monthly Assembly 0159 Meeting 39 Sir Knights, dressed
in Tuxedos and Baldric, met at St. Paul's Catholic Church Cafeteria, along with
Master Bob Read, Master of the State of Florida and Sir Knight from Assembly
3195 under Faithful Navigator Dan Mosley and Assembly 3402 under Faithful
Navigator Jose Carrera.
The purpose of the occasion was the Renewal of Obligation. This is a mandatory
event for each Assembly to remind us of our promises and pledges that we made
as we took each of our steps from the 1st Degree through our 4th Degree.
The Order of the Knights of Columbus is dedicated to the principles of Charity, Uni-
ty, Fraternity and Patriotism. And since each Sir Knight promised to be faithful and
live up to his commitment in each of his Degrees, the Renewal of Obligation Cere-
mony is to recall what we pledged to do in each Degree, and to solemnly repeat
what was promised as a sign of our continued commitment to our obligations.
These commitments are known only to our Brother Knights. In the 1st Degree we
were sworn to share them only with qualified Brothers in Good Standing. In our
2nd Degree we made a commitment of Unity to each other and in our 3rd Degree
we pledged our Fraternity to our Brother Knights. In the 4th Degree we

pledged our duty to our Country as a
Catholic Citizen.
Master Bob Read began the Ceremony
by calling upon the Faithful Friar, Fr
Tom, to lead us in prayer. He then
called on the Faithful Pilot to lead us
in our renewal of our 1st Degree prom-
ises. Next he called on the Faithful
Admiral to renew the 2nd Degree
pledges, followed by the Faithful Cap-
tain who led us in the renewal of our 3rd Degree promises. Finally the Faithful
Navigator led us in the renewal of our 4th Degree pledges.
It was a very moving and impressive Ceremony and reminded everyone present of
why they are in the Knights of Columbus and what they have solemnly pledged to
do.
Before the close of the Meeting, both Master Bob Read and Faithful Navigator Jim
Hyland reminded every one of the upcoming 4th Degree Exemplification in Sara-
sota on April 29th. (Cardinal Mooney HS). Since this is the first year that
an Assembly can attain Star Assembly, Jim asked each Grand Knight present,
(and a Council Member from the Assemblies whose Grand Knights were not pre-
sent), to please have at least three 3rd Degree Members in their Council become
4th Degree members. Assembly 0159 needs to have 20 new 4th Degree Mem-
bers to reach Star Assembly and 6 issues of a Newsletter published.
The Meeting was closed by a prayer from Fr. Tom, the singing of God Bless Ameri-
ca and followed by a wonderful spread of "Italian" Pasta, Bread, Salad, Desert and
Drinks and an hour or so of camaraderie. (link to see all Pictures from Renewal)

A letter that explains the History of how the Food for Families Program got started from
Co-Founder Worthy Sir Knight Frank Dillon
My Brother's in Christ,
I have a story that involves a lot of fellow Brother's and the formation of the Food for Family
Supreme program. Back in 2011 when I was a District Deputy I was called upon by St. Vin-
cent DePaul President Michael Raposa to come to a meeting regarding "dumpster divers."
That phrase translates to youths in the summer that have fallen in the cracks for summer pro-
grams and are literally going into trash bins in south St. Petersburg search for something to
eat. The meeting consisted of representatives of other faiths, the Mayor's Office and an elderly
woman who brought this issue before the Mayor's Office and the Mayor called for help.
That was the seed that fell on good soil. The knights were requested to buy heat warmer bags
and transport the food to families five days a week for the entire summer. That summer we fed
over 3,000 meals. Bill Fleck and his wife Dora were the first to jump into this program with
me.
The thoughts went further in my mind and I prayed for guidance. I requested that

each Council in our area prepare a dinner for the hungry families in south St. Petersburg. That became cumbersome and I spoke to
our Worthy Field Agent Wayne Sokalski and other Grand Knights and we came up with donating nonperishable food items to be
given out at a pancake breakfast on the first Saturday of each month. Bill and Dora were again the first to help out and donations
came in from other Councils and to this date Brother Bill hound's his Council at St. Jude's, for money each month to keep the pro-
gram alive in south St. Petersburg.
Brother Wayne gave me the idea to get in touch with the Director of Supreme Programs and I did and within months our program
Worthy State Deputy had a request from Supreme to do this on a trial basis in our State. Shortly thereafter with numbers in hand the
program became a Supreme Program, where I am proud to be the Coordinator for the State Council.
Our State Deputy requested me last year to take up the position of Coordinator for the program where I go throughout the State an-
nouncing how the program began and giving other Council's ideas on how to get their program up and running. I give thanks to the
many Brother's and their wives that assisted me in this Supreme Program that started right here in St. Petersburg, Florida.
May our Lord Jesus Christ continue to Bless this State with good Christian men that call themselves Knights of Columbus and thank
you to the wives that assist these men that do great acts of mercy!
Vivat Jesus!!!

Introducing John Shevenell one of our newer
4th Degree Members and his wife Ann
Born and raised in Rockville Centre New York, (Diocese of Rockville Centre). Attended Catholic Elementary and High School. Graduated from Long Island Lutheran High School (they had a world class basketball program) in 1970. I enlisted in the Army in 1971 and spent more than 2 years in Germany. Graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a BS in Business Ad-ministration in 1977. Commissioned via ROTC an Infantry Officer then attended Infantry Officer Basic Training and Airborne Training Fort Benning, Ga., subsequently again posted to Germany.
Upon discharge in 1981, I spent the next 20 years in various sales positions. My wife Ann and I moved to St. Petersburg in May 2016, and are parishioners of St. Raphael’s Parish. Ann and I have served our previous parishes as Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, and on the Parish Coun-cil. We love both our new Parish and St. Petersburg. My wife has been the one constant throughout my “Knightly Journey”. Always there to support me when necessary, to encourage when I had doubts. She has been my “Rock” throughout.
My introduction to the Knights of Columbus began with my Dad. He was also a 4
th Degree Knight. My dad passed away in 1989. Twen-
ty years later, in 2009, I decided it was time, I joined the Knights of Columbus if nothing more than to honor my Dad. It is with pride and humility that I must admit it has proven to be a wise decision. A de-cision that continues to bless me today. During the 8 years, I have been a Knight, I have held a variety of officer positions; Financial Secretary, Purser, District Deputy, and Color Corps. Commander.
As a Veteran, Patriotism and Our Flag are very dear to me. It is truly
an honor to represent the Knights of Columbus and 4th Degree while
in full Regalia. For me, there is no greater honor than to lead Cath-
olic Gentlemen carrying our National Colors!
Florida District Volunteer of the Year Award 2016
Florida District Winner Larry White. His nomina-
tion was forwarded onto the Vice Supreme Master
of the Desoto Province, along with the winners of
the provinces of North Carolina, South Carolina,
Georgia and Puerto Rico.
Vice Supreme Master, Robert J. Anderson, picked
Larry White’s nomination as the winner of the
Desoto Provence's and has forwarded his nomina-
tion on to Supreme, to be judged against the other
nineteen Provence's, in the United States, for the
title of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service National Advisory Committee Volunteer of
the year.
The Nominee (Larry F. White) is Grand Knight of his council 14815 Holy Cross and
Faithful Captain of his assembly 3402 Bishop W. Thomas Larkin. Larry is deeply
involved with all the activities of his council and assembly.
The Nominee (Larry F. White) has been a long standing member of NAMI Pinellas
County, Inc. (National Alliance of Mental Health) and is actively involved in the affil-
iate as a Connection Recovery Support Group Volunteer. He is a Certified Peer Sup-
port Specialist for the Department of Veterans Affairs, at the C. W. Bill Young VA
Medical Center, in the Substance Abuse Treatment Program. Every Saturday Volun-
teers at a Peer Recovery Support Group at the VA, / and has done so for over three
years. In addition, he is on a rotation to Volunteer for the community-based support
groups on Monday and Tuesday evenings.
Larry is an avid learner and takes the initiative to stay up-to-date with the most current
information. He attends any and all offered training such as Mental Health First Aid, a
variety of workshops, applicable NAMI signature program training, and other mental
health-centered training offered in the community. He acts as a primary contact for our
veteran members. The Nominee is eager to assist in all Veterans functions such as our
annual Harvest Festival, Holiday Parties, Fundraisers, Galas, and others. He is an ex-
cellent promoter of the Signature Programs, such as Peer-to-Peer, Connection Recov-
ery Support Group, Smarts and others, because he shares an enthusiasm for the pro-
grams through the first-hand experience. He maintains an approachable and profes-
sional demeanor that truly allows for the veterans to attain success in the area he con-
tributes. The nominees years of demonstrated professionalism, approachability, de-
pendability, consistency, and enthusiasm are the qualities that have encouraged his
assembly to offer his name to the Department of Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service –
National Advisory Council for the Volunteer of the year Award.
