Opulent period dramas have seen a resurgence in popularity in re-

cent years, with TV series such as “Downton Abbey” and “The Crown” amassing loyal followings. Luckily for fans of the genre, one of the U.K.’s most buzzworthy period dramas has made its way across the pond to rivet American audiences.

Tom Bateman (“Cold Pursuit,” 2019) stars as John Beecham, a for-mer British soldier with a mysterious past who moves into a mansion in Delhi in 1795 in “Masterpiece Clas-sic: Beecham House,” airing Sunday, July 19, on PBS. He brings with him a biracial baby, causing a stir among the estate’s staff.

As the series unfolds, Beecham welcomes his overbearing mother, Henrietta (Lesley Nicol, “Downton Abbey”), rebellious brother, Daniel (Leo Suter, “Victoria”), and others to his new home, all the while falling for English governess Margaret Os-bourne (Dakota Blue Richards, “The Golden Compass,” 2007). The enig-matic Chandrika (Pallavi Sharda, “Lion,” 2016) soon arrives as well and wastes no time exerting her au-thority in the house. John’s staff in-cludes the beautiful Chanchal (Shri-ya Pilgaonkar, “Fan,” 2016), the ba-by’s nursemaid.

Combining mystery and romance with lavish sets and intricate cos-tumes, the six-episode miniseries was originally produced for the U.K.’s ITV. Director Gurinder Chadha (“Bend It Like Beckham,” 2002), who co-created “Beecham House” with her husband Paul Mayeda Berges (“Blinded by the Light,” 2019) and author Shahrukh Husain (“In Custody”), explained that she came up with the idea for the mini-series while working on the script for the 2017 film “Viceroy’s House.”

“’Downton Abbey’ was very pop-ular at the time and I always loved ‘Upstairs, Downstairs,’ so I thought I’d like to do my own version of one of those shows with a twist,” Chad-ha said in an interview on “Master-piece’s” official website.

While many of Chadha’s past films focus on Indians living in Eng-land, “Beecham House” turns the tables on her usual MO to explore the life of an Englishman living in In-dia who is determined to make a

name for himself as a trader while living a quiet, peaceful life with his family.

“Masterpiece” executive Rebec-ca Eaton had high praise for the miniseries in a news release an-nouncing that it would be airing on the PBS flagship series.

“I haven’t seen a series as visual-ly sumptuous as ‘Beecham House’ in a long time,” she said. “This is a new time and place for our audience ... India in 1795, before the Raj. There is love and passion, too, and a story-line full of deepening mystery.”

In the aforementioned interview, Chadha made it clear that she was determined to film at least part of the series in India, explaining that the setting couldn’t really be dupli-cated anywhere else.

“You can’t beat India on cam-era,” Chadha explained. “One of the things about India that existed long before the British came along and carried on long after they left, and will carry on, is their architecture, the palaces, the forts. We have used many, many shots of those amazing buildings, and that is India, for me. You cannot shoot that anywhere else.”

The setting is one thing. But the cast is equally impressive. Bateman starred in Sky TV’s “The Tunnel” in 2013, the same year he began his run as Giuliano Medici in the TV se-ries “Da Vinci’s Demons.” He gained notoriety for his role as the title char-acter in 2015’s “Jekyll & Hyde” TV series. Bateman also starred in the Hollywood films “Snatched” (2017) and “Murder on the Orient Express” (2017) before returning to TV in ITV’s “Vanity Fair.” Up next, he’s set to ap-pear in the Netflix series “Behind Her Eyes.”

Nicol is, of course, familiar as “Downton Abbey” cook Beryl Pat-more. The English actress is a three-

time SAG award winner, known for her roles in the BBC’s adaptations of “The Lion, the Witch and the Ward-robe” and “The Silver Chair.” Ameri-can audiences may recognize her for her work on such TV series as “Su-pernatural,” “The Catch” and “The Odd Couple.”

After getting his start on stage as a boy, Suter appeared in films such as “Maleficent” (2014) and “Fallen” (2016). He has also been seen in the television series “Ransom” and “Sanditon.”

Richards began acting as a child as well and landed the role of Lyra in “The Golden Compass” (2007) at the age of 13. She was cast in the British teen drama “Skins,” as well as the TV movie “Dustbin Baby” (2008) and the fantasy film “The Se-cret of Moonacre” (2008).

In addition to the Bollywood films “Besharam” (2013) and “Ha-waizaada” (2015), Sharda starred opposite Nicole Kidman in the Holly-wood film “Lion” (2016) and ap-peared in the Australian medical drama “Pulse.”

The daughter of two actors, Pilga-onkar began her onscreen career at the age of 5 in the Hindu television series “Tu Tu Main Main.” She worked on the French film “Un plus une” (2015) before making her Bol-lywood debut in “Fan” (2016).

While “Beecham House” was not based on actual events as some have speculated, there is at least one character who was based on a real-life figure, Emperor Shah Alam II (Roshan Seth, “Gandhi,” 1982).

Other notable characters include John’s friend and business partner, Samuel Parker (Marc Warren, “Band of Brothers”), French mercenary General Castillon (Grégory Fitoussi, “Mr. Selfridge”) and Beecham fami-ly friend Violet Woodhouse (Bessie Carter, “Howards End”).

this Norwegian comedy series re-turns for a third season Wednes-day, July 22, on Netflix. While Vi-kings are usually best suited for dramas, this series manages to balance the typical bloody and se-rious storylines with witty and well-timed humor. The first two seasons follow the life of Chieftain Olav (Henrik Mestad, “Okkupert”) and his wife, Hildur (Marianne Saastad Ottesen, “Lilyhammer”), as they handle day-to-day life in their village of Norheim. Together they deal with a rival tribe led by Jarl Varg (Jon Oilgarden, “Helt Per-fekt”), conflicts with neighboring villages, and a Roman slave (Trond Fausa, “Neste Sommer”), who constantly tries to modernize their

Name the single, best, tastiest thing you have ever eaten.

Can’t think of just one? That’s OK, tastes change over the years. Your mood in that moment can also affect your taste perception, which explains why you could eat the same meal twice and have a completely different experience.

But that’s the kind of question that reveals a lot about your flavor palate and preferences, not to mention your dining/travel experi-ences. (Mine may be a Braud & Co. cinnamon bun in Reykjavik, Ice-land — specifically, the first of five that I gobbled up in a single after-noon because they were just that good.)

It’s also the idea behind “Best Thing I Ever Ate,” which started out on the Food Network as a one-time special that turned into a se-ries in June 2009. In 2018, the se-ries moved to The Cooking Chan-nel, where it continues to serve as the ultimate guide to what to eat (and where) in America.

And on Monday, July 20, Food Network is rolling out an all-new, all-star edition that will whet your appetite for more of this country’s best bites. Each of the eight epi-sodes of “All-Star Best Thing I Ever Ate” is a one-hour food travel-ogue in the company of Food Net-work’s biggest stars, from Sunny Anderson to Alton Brown. They’ll dish about their favorite foods and offer a few of their own personal recipes, too.

In Monday’s episode, Martha Stewart talks about flame-grilled wagyu while Guy Fieri points viewers in the direction of his fa-vorite burrito. Back on the case: It’s been a long time coming, but Season 2 of “The Alienist” officially kicks off this Sunday, July 19, on TNT. That’s one week sooner than the previ-ously announced start date for this installment, which is officially ti-tled “The Alienist: Angel of Dark-ness.”

As an added gesture of good-will to the series’ very patient fans — Season 2 was announced al-most two years ago — the cabler will double your dose of this peri-od crime drama by airing back-to-back episodes every Sunday through Aug. 9. And that should fill the time-slots freshly vacated by “Snowpiercer” following its July 12 finale.

“The Alienist” was a huge suc-cess for TNT when it debuted back in 2018. It was the top-rated fresh-man cable series, but if audience numbers alone aren’t enough to prove its worth, Season 1 also earned six Emmy and two Golden Globe Award nominations.

The first season centered on criminal psychologist Laszlo Kreizler, played by Daniel Brühl (“Inglourious Basterds,” 2009), along with ambitious secretary Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning, “War of the Worlds,” 2005) and newspaper illustrator John Moore (Luke Evans, “Dracula Untold,” 2014) as they pursued a serial kill-er in turn-of-the-century New York.

In Season 2, Sara leads the charge as the head of her own de-tective agency. And this time, the kidnapping of the Spanish consul-ar’s infant daughter will lead our trio down a “sinister path of mur-der and deceit” (per TNT). Look for Douglas Smith (“Big Little Lies”) and Matthew Shear (“The Boy Downstairs,” 2017) to return as twin brothers Marcus and Lucius Isaacson, while Robert Ray Wis-dom (“Supernatural”) and Ted Levine (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” 2018) will reprise their roles as Cyrus and former NYPD commissioner Thomas Byrnes, re-spectively. Melanie Field (“You”) and newcomer Rosy McEwen have also joined the cast for Sea-son 2.

Cain’s ‘Weekend’ gig: While no one wants to feel like they can be easily replaced, “Fox & Friends Weekend” may have taken that to the extreme.

The Fox News weekend morn-ing show has featured a rotating substitute co-host ever since Tucker Carlson left for prime time back in 2016. But that’s about to change: on Saturday, Aug. 15, ESPN radio host and commenta-

tor Will Cain is set to make his of-ficial debut as co-host alongside familiar faces Jedediah Bila and Pete Hegseth.

A licensed attorney who previ-ously oversaw two media compa-nies, Cain has been with ESPN since 2015, when he joined as a contributor to “Fantasy Football Now” and “Outside the Lines.” More recently, he’s been the host of the daily radio show “The Will

While announcing Cain’s new gig with Fox News, Gavin Hadden, vice-president of morning program-ming, alluded to the new co-host’s varied resume and said, “Will has a unique ability to connect with an audience on a wide variety of topics and will make an excellent addition to the ‘Fox & Friends’ franchise.”
