Page 5: Francis Marion University 2010 baseball media guide

Francis Marion returns 23 of 32players from last year’s 38-15-1 squadthat finished second during the Peach BeltConference regular season, won the con-ference tournament, and advanced to theNCAA Southeast Regional. The win totalwas the second-highest in team history.

This season, the Patriots areranked eighth, 12th, and 13th in threepreseason national polls and were pickeda close second in the preseason PBCcoaches’ poll.

Among the returnees for tenth-year FMU head coach Art Inabinet are 12of 15 pitchers from last season’s staff. These include senior right-handed starterErik Sommerville (5-3 record, 1 save, 5.27earned run average in 2009), senior rightyrelievers Brandon Forshee (5-2, 4 saves,2.08 ERA) and Josh Biggers (2-0, 2 saves,1.88 ERA), and senior lefty starters JoshEdgin (4-2, 4.04 ERA) and JeremiahMeiners (6-2, 4.15 ERA). Both Forsheeand Meiners were All-Region selections ayear ago, while Edgin was drafted by theAtlanta Braves last summer, but chose toreturn to FMU for his senior year. Forsheeranked second nationally last year in few-est hits allowed per nine innings (5.44)and 19th in earned run average. Seniorright-hander Zane Petty, who missed lastseason with an injury, also returns.

Six position starters return asdoes the designated hitter. These includeAll-Region shortstop Barrett Kleinknecht(.372, 9 home runs, 64 runs batted in for2009) and All-Conference designated hit-ter Jacob Wallace (.332, 3 HRs, 47 RBIs).The Patriots return their entire starting out-field – Tyler Boyd (.287), Martin Gordon(.394, .470 on-base percentage), and AlexLee (.347, 3 HRs, 37 RBIs) – as well asthe right side of the infield with junior firstbaseman Preston Shuey (.317, 7 HRs,51 RBIs) and Biggers, who ended the yearstarting at second base. Gordon playedfor South Africa in last year’s World Base-ball Classic.

Kleinknecht also made 15 ap-pearances on the mound and registered a1-3 record with a team-leading six savesand a 3.41 ERA. The West Florence HighSchool product was listed among both thebatting and pitching national leaders for2009: 46th in saves (6) and 34th in hits(89), 45th in runs batted in (64), 67th intotal bases (136), and was the 56th tough-

est batter to strikeout (15 Ks in 264 plateappearances). Four of the returning po-sition players had double-digit game hit-ting streaks in 2009: Gordon, Boyd,Wallace, and Kleinknecht.

“I think we are ready to play,”said Inabinet. “Early in the preseason, the pitchers were ahead of the batters, but as we get ready to start, the hittershave made strives. We have more depththan in the past at all positions, espe-cially in the bullpen. On the mound, wehave four senior starters – two rightiesand two lefties – a first for me. This grouppossesses experience and the ability topitch. They also have a variety ofstrengths so opponents won’t see thesame stuff in a multi-game series. Manyof our arms are also interchangeable andcan start, go long relief, or short relief. In addition to the returnees in the bullpen, junior right-handers Patrick Mincey(transfer from Spartanburg MethodistCollege) and Tyler Cappelmann (USCSumter) can also close. This could bethe best bullpen FMU has seen in a longtime.”

Cappelmann is also expected tostart at third base, giving the Patriotsthree players in the starting infield thatwere former shortstops at the collegiatelevel (Kleinknecht, Biggers, andCappelmann). Inabinet added, “Senioroutfielder Josh Smith (.246) has playedwell this spring and will push the threereturnees for playing time. Wallace willlikely move behind the plate to replacedeparted All-Region backstop JaredBarkdoll. He blocks the ball well and doesa good job of handling the pitchers.” New-comer Logan Bland, who hit .205 atWestern Carolina University in 2009, willalso do some catching and will hit in thedesignated hitter position. Senior left-handed bat Taylor Norfleet (.237) will alsohit in the DH spot.

At the plate, Inabinet lamentedthe loss of 79 RBIs from Barkdoll andAll-Region third baseman Keon Graves.“We do return some power bats, but willlook to Lee, Boyd, and Wallace for morecontributions. These three all have theability to drive in runs, hit above .300,and make up for the two losses.

“We don’t have as much teamspeed as in past years, but the first threebatters in our order (Gordon, Lee,
