The band were pleased that the Training Band joined them for some of the seasonal pieces, and were also delighted that the Panache Steel Band were again able to take part with two slots during the evening, both of which were much appreciated by the audience. Frampton Playground News WithagenerousgrantfromtheParishCounciltostartusoff,we are currently bidding for grants and looking for funding to get a roundabout like this one. This will provide lots of fun for children in wheelchairs or with disabilities, and will also meet the need for more activities for smaller children. If you can help with funding, please contact Jim Ball on 07885 756 789.The playground also needs an ever increasing amount of maintenance, which is done by a small number of volunteers led by Dicky Baker. This year we are planning at least 4maintenancedaysduringtheyeartokeeptheworktickingover.Thefirstoneisjustbefore the Easter Holidays on Saturday 24 March 2018.There’slotsofworktodo-please come and give us a hand – we need all the help we can get! Look out for his poster on the Green Shop notice board. In December, Peter Cheeseman gave a presentation about the Emergency Plan. Parish councillors have roles to play in this and one of them is to identify vulnerable people in their wards who might need a special focus during an emergency. This may not be people who are permanently vulnerable but may, for example, include someone who has just broken their leg or ankle or who developed pneumonia in the last few days. We want to make sure that we get to such people quickly and discussed the best way to do this. We aregoingtosetupa‘telephonetree’to3or4peopleineachwardwhocanletusknowaboutanyoftheirneighbourswhoneedhelp.(SeeJaneColes’piecefromtheEmergencyPlanning Team). We may be approaching you to see if you will take part but it would be really nice to have some volunteers to come forward to take this on, so if you think you could help please telephone our clerk, Sheila Murray, on 01452741824, speak to your local councillor, or e-mail the parish council on [email protected] However, be aware that (hopefully) you may never actually be called upon to do this. From the Team Rector I hope youhad a truly blessedChristmas andNewYear. It’s beengreat hearingabout what people have been up to over the last couple of months; travelling, visiting family, travelling to visit family, enjoying the comforts of home, hopefully not having to travel to avoid family. If Christmas is a lonely time for you I hope you wereabletofindcomfortinGod’spresenceandlove. My family and I are enjoying the friendliness and warmth so evident in this beautiful partoftheworld.OneofthethingsIfindamusingiswhenpeoplemeetmewhohaveheardabout the role I have inoverseeingfifteenparishes.Occasionally thefirst thing they say is, ‘Howmanyparishesdo youhave?’ From time to time theconversationdoesn’tgomuchfurtherthanthatandIwanttosaytothem,‘There’smuchmoreinterestingstuffaboutmethanhowmanyparishesIlead’,that’snotthemostimportantthingaboutme.Ofcourse,mostofthetimepeopleareinterestedintheotherstuffaswell.I wonder though if you have ever felt that others have summed you up by just a small part of who you are? We can so easily fall into this trap ourselves when we look at people; who they are as people can be determined for us by the colour of their skin, what village they live in, the county where they grew up, their accents and so on.Peopleareamazingandsurprising, sometimesweneedtolookpastahangupwe have to truly see them.In about a month Lent starts, the six-week journey to Easter. This is a profound and important time in the Christian calendar. I want to encourage you to avoid making the same mistake with Jesus that we can make with people; taking one thing as the mainthingandmissingoutonallthewonderfulthingsJesusistous.Yes,Heisoursaviour, He is God full of power and wisdom, He is also our friend, our brother, He is hurt by our rejection and He delights in our companionship. The same Jesus who tenderly cared for the sick was roused to fury by the misuse of the Temple. IhopeandpraythatyouwouldfindafreshexperienceofJesus, thatHewouldcomealive for you in a new way and that your faith would be strengthened and renewed.Rev Steve HarrisonThe Rectory, Church LaneLeonardStanley,Stonehouse,GL103NPTel: 07466 858975 Email: [email protected]

The cloth manufactured in Stroud was known throughout the world and Stroudwater Red is recognised even today in the scarlet tunics worn by our soldiers in ceremonial dress. In the early 20th Century the dominance of the canals faded with the advent of rail and road transport and canals fell into disrepair, some disappearing altogether bybeingfilledin. Inthe1970’sagroupofenthusiastsproposedthatourlocalcanalsshouldberestoredforgenerationstocome;significantprogresshasbeenmade over the years and photographs of major renovations and rebuilding were shown to illustrate just how much work has been done with a long stretch of the canal from Stonehouse to Bowbridge now being navigable and developed, but landlocked. The ultimate aim of opening the canal right down to Saul and thereby joining the National Waterways network is being actively pursued although themammothtaskwascleartounderstand.CrossingtheM5andA38wereonlytwoofthemajorobstacles which have had to be addressed. The Panto 2018 - A ReviewOver the past few years, the annual Panto presented by Perryway Players has beenchanging. This year, the production team pulled all the stops out, and delighted the sell-outaudienceswithahightech,full-onproductionofBeautyandtheBeast.Notonlydidtheteam boast a director and producer, but also had a choreographer, a dedicated health and safetyofficerandalonglistofpeoplehelpingKevinasstagemanageronprops, costumes, set design and backstage.Thechangesstartwithhowticketsarebought.Insteadofafairlyhaphazardicecreamboxfrom the local store, you can book on line or ring Ticket Source, who send out professional qualityticketsforyourchosen, numberedseats.Leaveittoolateandyouwillfindthatallshows are sold out!! Craig Hunt who directed and played the Dame was, as usual, in very good voice. He was supportedbyastrongcastof‘veterans’andnewarrivals. Some, likeLaurenceWoodandRachael Merrett were making welcome returns after a break of some years. It was good to see so many children taking part, trying to make themselves heard in such a noisy production. The music and lighting was incredible – well done Rhys. Special mention should be made of the dance scene with Beauty and the Beast. More than one person said it brought tears to their eyes.So – nomore fluffed lines, wadrobemalfunctions and occasionalmissed scenes. Nowa thingof thepast.Someregularaudiencegoersmiss the ‘edge’ofnotquiteknowingwhat they would see, but ticket sales would indicate that the new look Perryway Players is proving extremely popular. Long may they thrive.Don’tforgettobookyourticketsfortheSpringproductionSAFEHOUSE.Athrillerwithanew locally written script that will have you on the edge of your seats. The high tech staging will be continued. If you were impressed by Beauty and the Beast, this is a production tolook forward to. Robin Wheeler
The Panto 2018 - And MemoriesI do hope you took the opportunity of going along to see this year's Pantomime production by the Perryway Players and as all tickets were sold I am sure many of you did. It was a very welldirected, produced, choreographedandactedproductionbyagoodAmateurDramaticgroup. I wasn't too familiar with this pantomime but it turned out to be a good story with just the right amount of humour, goodies and baddies. Well done everyone and we look forward to many more. I have the honour of being President of the Perryway Players at the present time and I am proud to hold this position.AsIthoughtaboutthepantomimeittookmebacktotheveryfirstpantomimewhichwasperformed in the Cadbury Hall. It was 1946 and a lady came to live in the village with her mother.HernamewasMissPickeringandshehadjustretiredfromtheYoungVicTheatreinBristol. She had the idea of writing and producing a Panto as there were quite a number of young people in the village at that time all willing and eager to perform! So it started - the firstpantomime-RobinsonCrusoe.AlltheoldergirlsandboyshadtheleadingrolesandI,a young 11 year old, was chosen to be in the chorus as a grass skirted Hoola Hoola girl.! How exciting it was. We had a Dancing Teacher from Gloucester arrive to teach us our routines, allthewordsandmusicwrittenbyMissPickering.Icanstillrememberthewordsofthatfirstsong! The ladies in the village rallied round to make costumes, led by Mrs. Smith from Brook House,TheArch.Othershelpedwithmakeupandothersorganisedrefreshments.Itwasawonderful time, we even went 'on tour' Slimbridge, Whitminster, Cam, we were famous!!! We wentontodomoreandtheneventuallythesewerecontinuedbythelocalAmateurDramaticSociety, the Perryway Players. I know there are still others in the village who took part in these wonderful productions and could add more memories. I joined the Perryway Players at the age of 15 and enjoyed performing in a good many great plays until I left the village at the ageof21butIactuallyrememberfirststandingonCadburystagewhenattheageof6-7the infants at Frampton school acted the story of 'The Lion and the Mouse' for all the parents. I was the Storyteller - who else? Happy Memories. Shirley Hunter
