project: residenceHutchison Residence, Winter Park, Fla.
Product: Castletop Shingle (6,000 square feet); Dutch Seam (3,000 square feet);
Versa-Lok curved panels (300 square feet)
Material: Castletop and Dutch Seam are both .032-inch aluminum
Finish: Clear Anodized
Installer: Rock Solid Roofing, Melbourne, Fla.
Being the oldest home in Winter Park comes with some notoriety, but it also carries some historical
requirements. The Hutchison home was built in 1871. In 2012, the homeowners were looking to replace
the home’s 60-year-old Victorian Shingle roof system to create a more energy-efficient and aesthetically
pleasing roof. An additional requirement was to maintain the look of the home in order to reflect its
roots. As a result, three roofing profiles from ATAS were chosen.

project: military facilityBuilding 530, MacDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Fla.
Product: Berridge’s Vantage Point retrofit roof system and
Berridge’s Zee-Lock standing seam roofing system (5,000 square feet)
Material: The Berridge Zee-Lock standing seam was installed on
a 22-gauge corrugated structural deck on the Vantage Point retrofit framing system
Finish: PVDF Terra-Cotta
Installer: Morrell Architectural Systems, Tampa, Fla.
MacDill Air Force Base’s Building 530 was transformed from a conventional, flat roof into visually
appealing and watertight standing seam metal roof system. Using 16-gauge and 24-gauge framing
components, Vantage Point created a higher profile roof designed and engineered to shed water,
avoiding pooling and subsequent leakage. The project was completed during the summer of 2011.

Material: .040-inch aluminum
Finish: PVDF Wind Surf Blue (custom color)
Installer: KMR Enterprises Inc, Ocean City, Fla.
KMR partner Michael Schlembach and his team joined forces with Drexel Metals to battle this
challenging project. According to Schlembach, he selected Drexel Metals because of its superior
warranties, fast delivery, roll forming equipment and color-matching partnership. “By picking Drexel
Metals, we could work directly with them instead of going through a distributor or separate channels.
They are so easy to work with and exceeded our expectations,” he says.

Product: Edco Generations Shake (15,000 square feet)
Material: 30-gauge galvanized steel
Finish: PVDF Copper HD
Installer: ABC Seamless, Fargo, N.D.
St. Philip’s Church needed a new roof for its 100-year-old church and the parishioners wanted to
maintain the rustic look of the building. They also wanted a long-lasting solution and that led them to
look at metal. The members of the board at St. Philip’s church chose Edco’s Generations Shake based on
the looks and the recommendation of the installer. The Copper HD color complemented the color of the
existing building and really looks architecturally designed. Edco’s Generations Shake comes in nine rustic
looking colors that add curb appeal to any project.

Product: Fabral’s Stand ‘N Seam structural standing seam panel (80,000 square feet)
Material: 24-gauge Galvalume
Finish: PVDF Bone White
Installer: Bristol Engineered Metals, Duluth, Ga.
Dealer: Orion Associates, Decatur, Ga.
Architect: Knight Architects Inc., Atlanta
The curve of the roof expresses the shape of a football as well as the arc of a thrown pass, and provides
a higher space in the middle of the building over the interior playing surface. The Stand ‘N Seam profile
offers superior wind-uplift resistance, ASTM E1592 and multiple UL90 ratings for applications over
open framing or solid substrates and has a Class A Fire rating. The Stand ‘N Seam allowed for on-site
fabrication, so the panels stretch the full width of the building, without any end-seams.

Product: R-Mer Span 16-inch structural standing seam panels (2,400 square feet)
Material: 24-gauge Galvalume
Finish: PVDF Mocha
Installer: Modern Builders, Janesville, Iowa
Structural Engineer: Timothy Korpela, P.E., Korpela Engineering Structural Co.,
Windsor Heights, Iowa.
In general, seals and sea lions in captivity tend to have more eye problems than other zoo animals. The
1,200-square-foot canopies, designed to resemble large umbrellas, are located on the pool’s island,
providing maximum shade coverage. The bases were constructed using cylinder steel piping, allowing for
an open structural framing system that is both lightweight and aesthetically pleasing. The panels, varying
in length from 5 feet to 25 feet, provide the industry’s highest wind uplift rating and were engineered to
withstand 40 pounds of snow. Additionally, the metal system requires little to no maintenance and was
engineered with the goal of reaching more than 30 years of service life.

Judson University, Elgin IL, needed a new facility to house its expanding Benjamin P. Browne Library
as well as its fledgling architecture program — a building that would draw (no pun attended) both
attention and acclaim. The result was the first truly “green” college building in the United States. And
both design and execution have been reaping awards ever since. Every roof and wall panel on the three
wings of the building was a custom cut and fit and in the case of the wall panels, custom fabricated.

Originally, the homeowner was not even considering stone-coated steel because
she was not aware of the product. She did have a strong desire to ensure the product she selected must
meet a strict design aesthetic. Using the clay tile color sample provided by the homeowner,
Metro started the process of developing a sample section of the MetroShake profile for consideration.
After no less than 14 different sample color variations being shipped from California to Arizona
was the homeowner finally happy with the choice of color. The finished result is a roof that blends
perfectly with the nature surrounding it in this desert mountain setting.

masonry were iconic to the existing campus,” says Roy Abernathy, president of FWAJDB. “Naturally, the

The inspiration for this residence located on the Wilmington River, comes from the architectural
and cultural influences of the Caribbean Islands. A primary design goal was to create a one-story house
that suited the environment and broke up the nearly 18,000 square feet of living area. This was achieved
by creating a main house plus three guest houses. The main house includes the primary living functions
along with two bedrooms, game room and media room. Other bedrooms and guest spaces were
divided among the three guest houses, one of which is a 1930s dock house original to the site.

In addition to metal roofing’s aesthetic value for architectural applications, its capability to withstand extreme wind loads upwards and beyond 150 mph for coastal areas plays a key role in the selection of a roofing system. The term “hardening” is associated now with upgrading the structural integrity of the building to withstand these Mother Nature imposed conditions.
A new MBCI Double-Lok in bare Galvalume was installed with S-5! wind clamps as required to meet the new 130 mph wind speed that exceeds the current building code criteria. Fiberglass
insulation was installed between the old and new roofs to increase the energy efficiency of the building and to provide a more productive work environment.

Architect: Dave Digiovanni, Dave Digiovanni & Associates, Sea Cliff, N.Y.
When Marty Kosmynka was seeking approvals to build North Fork Self Storage, he knew the facility
would need to be something special to get the green light. Building supplier Trachte Building Systems
worked with Kosmynka to provide a customized group of buildings that met fit in with the upscale area.
The local architectural review board was looking to break up the mass of the buildings and limited the
project height to 36 feet. By using a reverse hipped roof with multiple dormers, building accents and
landscaping, the facility achieved its’ goals and fits in well with the affluent community. The evergreen
