Section 1 Introduction
• Numerator: The number above the line in a common fraction showing how many of the parts indicated by the denominator are taken.
• Denominator: The number below the line in a common fraction a divisor.
• Fraction: A numerical quantity that is not a whole number.
Section 2 Comparing Fractions• You have to divide the numerator by the
denominator to get decimal forms of the fractions. Then you compare the decimals and which ever one is bigger is your bigger fraction.
• For an example. 6/8[><or=]4/7? What you do is divide the numerator and the denominator to get the decimal form to get the answer.
The answer is 6/8>4/7.
Section 2 Practice Comparing Fractions1. Which is larger 2/6 or 5/8?2. Which is smaller 3/4 or 1/8?3. Which is larger 5/6 or 2/3?4. Which is smaller 1/2 or 2/5?5. Which is larger 2/3 or 4/6?6. Which is smaller 5/7 or 8/9?7. Which is larger 3/5 or 2/4?8. Which is smaller 3/5 or 4/5?9. Which is larger 4/6 or 5/8?10. Which is smaller 5/7 or 7/8?Make sure your answer is reduced.
Section 3 Practice Multiplying
• How to reduce is to divide the numerator and the denominator by the greatest common factor to get the answer.
• For an example. 50/100 you have to divide the numerator and the denominator by 50 to get the reduced form.
• The answer is 1/2.
Section 3 Practice Multiplying1. 3/57/82. 2/6/43. 5/71/44. 2/35/65. 4/56/96. 2/35/87. 1/24/78. 2/83/59. 6/75/910. 1/51/3Make sure answers are in reduced form.
Section 3 How to Multiply Fractions
• How you multiply is you have to take two fractions and then you have to multiply the numerator together then you have to multiply the denominators.
• For an example. 3/45/6. First you have to do 35 = 15 which is the answer for the numerator. Then you have to multiply 46= 24 which is the answer for the denominator.
• Then you have 15/24 for your answer then you have to reduce it and you get 5/8.
Section 4 Practice Adding
A way to add fractions and subtract fractions is to get a common denominator. A way to get a common denominator is to find a number that both denominators have in common. Then you can use the number that the denominators are in common with each other to get the denominator of the fractions. For an example. 3/4 +3/7 The common denominator is 28 so we had to multiply the to denominators to get 28 which is the common denominator. So the answer is 3/14.
Section 4 Practice Adding1. I drank 1/3 of my water then drank another 2/5 of the water. How much did I drink in all?2. 4/7+5/83. 2/3+1/84. I ate 2/3 of a candy bar then ate another 2/5 of the candy bar. How much did I eat in all?5. 1/4+3/46. I ate 1/3 of my pizza then ate another 1/5 of the pizza. How much did I eat in all?7. 2/3+3/48. 1/8+4/59. 1/10+2/1010. 1/2+1/4
Section 5 Practice Dividing
• To divide fractions you need to do a reciprocal. • A reciprocal is that the second fraction in the
problem switches then you multiply the fractions then when you get the answer you simply.
• For an example. 5/87/9• What you do is a reciprocal you switch 7/9 to
9/7 then multiply 5/8 to 9/7 • The answer is 45/56
